What if your fairy godmother sent you to the royal ball to assassinate the prince, but instead of killing him you fell in love?
The kingdom is in upheaval. The royals are imprisoning anyone with fairytale blood in a crusade to get rid of magic and make technology—something they can control—dominant. It all gets personal when Ellery’s best friend, a smoke sprite, is arrested, and Ellery must find a way to rescue her.
Ellery’s fairy godmother devises a devious deal. She will get Ellery into the hi-tech palace to save her friend, if she kills the prince while at the ball. But there’s a problem. Several, actually.
Ellery passes as human but if the truth is discovered she’d be imprisoned. A truth she refuses to face. She doesn’t travel in royal circles and wouldn’t recognize the prince if he kissed her. And, she certainly doesn’t want to kill anyone. Ever.
But Ellery will do anything to save her friend.
When Ellery arrives at the ball, she meets a charming stranger and attraction ignites. He follows her into the palace prison. There they discover a dark royal plot that will destroy the fairytale creatures. Will she choose to fight for her magical friends or her heart?
Other books in the series: Cinderella Soldier and Cinderella Spy.
Allie Burton has always been a reader and writer. She wrote her first novel at the age of twelve when she was stranded at a hospital by a snowstorm. Receiving her first romance from her grandmother, she fell in love with the genre. As an adult, she read young adult books with her own teens and was excited to find something fresh and new. Now, she writes both.
Having so many jobs as a teen and adult became great research material for the stories she writes. She has been everything from a bike police officer to a professional mascot escort to an advertising executive. She has lived on three continents and in four states and has studied art, fashion design, and marine biology.
Allie is a member of several writing organizations. She splits her time between Arizona and Colorado where she skis, golfs, and bikes.
A Cinderella re-telling with a twist! This is a cute and fae retelling of the fairytale and I did enjoy it.
It took a bit for me to get into it though. We all know the original Cinderella story. So the author doesn't spend a whole lot of time rehashing the atrocities Ellery had to go through living with her step-mom and step-sisters. However, for me, for me to believe in the plight of Elle and all the horrible things she had to endure I would have liked to "see" more creative way to make me feel more for her rather than make me rely on the original assumptions of how she was treated. Elle is magik and she has to hide her magik in order to live in this world. As humans treat anyone with magik horribly. The world building is minimum and I would have liked more depth on how it came to be. Rather than spent on Ellery hellbent on denying her magik. The infamous Ball that she is supposed to attend...well, there is a bit of a twist to it in this version. I kinda liked it. Her adventure begins from there on and acceptance of who she is. I want to see growth!!
Overall, it is a good start to the series. I definitely would have preferred a bit more character depth to both the Prince and Ellery. I do want to see where it leads. There is potential here if rightly executed.
Oooo what a great story and plot. And while I dislike cliffhangers. This one has me hooked and wanting more of this series asap. Not your average Cinderella fairytale story. There's magic, tons of fantasy creatures, the royals, and the laws they are trying to enforce on the people and face in general.
Cinderella is not your average girl. Having to just turned sixteen not too long ago and having the biggest secret that will shame her family name forever if it's found out by the humans that rule the land. Her best friend is a smoke fairy. And her stepmother and stepsisters hate her with a passion. What's a girl to do, but wait it out and hopefully be able to get away soon. Only this fairytale isn't that easy...
This book starts off as Cinderella and very quickly turns into sooo much more. I was very entertained and read it in just a few hours. It's packed with action at every turn and it's awesome. I highly recommend reading this book if you like coming of age stories, fairy tales, action, romance, and kick-ass heroines. I can't wait to keep reading this new series.
If you enjoy retelling of fairytales with new twists this one is great. It's not mushy or romantic, instead it has teenage angst, quests, magical creatures, and a half fairy trying to make sense of it all. Ellery just wants to fit in to her human life, become an accepted adult and regain her inheritance from her step mother. She's not counting on her best friend being arrested, her fairy godmother making a binding promise, or falling into a quest to champion the release of magical creatures being imprisoned and tortured. Can't wait for the sequel!
If you want a fairytale retelling with an unpredictable storyline this is the book for you. The world building and characters are so well done that you get sucked into the story and carried away for the whole adventure. Make sure you have plenty of time to read this one because you will find it hard to put down once you start.
I really enjoyed this version of Cinderella…. I love the mix of magic and human presumptions of each other and the inner battle Elle continues to face throughout the story…. I have recommended this retelling to several of my friends, for themselves and their kids…. A lot more action in this Cinderella story…. A really great read for young and old alike….
Well for a Cinderella retelling, this was a decent one. I liked the fairie and magic twist. I didn't like Rye but really liked stone. Elle was typical wet rag at the beginning but found her strength while fighting to get her friend back. Enjoyed this retelling and glad it didn't follow the original too closely.
This is an awesome fairytale retelling of Cinderella that comes complete with twists and turns, magic , fairy godmothers, wicked stepsisters and so much more! With a unique look at this tale as old as time, throw in some technology and you will not be able to put this down!
Great spin on the Cinderella we all know and love. Unique twist. Likeable characters. Lots of inner monologue. Mostly predictable because you know Cinderella, but you don’t want to stop. Good first book in a series. You definitely are left wanting more.
What if your fairy godmother sent you to the royal ball to assassinate the heir to the kingdom, but instead of killing the prince you fell in love?
It was a lovely retelling of my favourite tale, Cinderella! Loved this idea of magic, fairies and so much more interwoven into this story. An interesting spin on a classic and timeless tale.
The heroine was annoying at some times (just very few moments) but at least there is character development. And I can't wait to see how her character evolves over the course of this series.
Full of secrets, fairies, godmother, balls, royals, mystery and a hint of romance.
Perfect for readers of fairy tale retellings/fantasy romances.
Who knew Cinderella could be such a kicking heroine?! The first book in The Glass Slipper Adventures is a knock out. What starts as a Cinderella story quickly turns into a roller coaster ride of adventure. The characters are both human and enchanted. And the world Allie Burton creates is so real you want to live there. Don’t miss the start to this marvelous new series. Cinderella Assassin
Only loosely follows the fable. I think this story would stand on it's own anyway. Engaging enough to see what happens. There are some sections that feel written differently from other sections. Maybe that calms down in later books.
This is a retelling of Cinderella complete with the evil stepmother and step sisters, fairy godmother, and prince. Ellery and her friends are likeable enough to make the story enjoyable. There’s majik and technology; the palace even has cyborg servants, which I though was cool. The story line was predictable with no real surprises or plot twists and I feel the characters could have more depth to make them more relatable. Overall, this is an enjoyable, easy read that I would recommend to anyone looking for a Cinderella retelling.
Thank you to the author for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Loved this story. I honestly couldn’t put it down and realises I was still reading it at 3am. Ellery is half human and half Majik, she is in a world where the humans have the power. One small thing can lead you to Dungeons. It’s a story where she learns to accept who she is. I can’t wait to read the next book. I absolutely love when you get InTown book so much you can’t put it down
This was an awesome retelling of Cinderella. The twist having to do with magic was well thought out and delivered in an action packed story line. Same wicked stepmother and sisters but good and evil are not so easy to figure out. Lots of interesting characters, fast moving storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat and a mystery that is revealed at the end. The Author did a great job of capturing the readers interested and leaves you wanting more. I look forward to the next book in the series and hope it comes out quick
This was a lighthearted, quick read where the main character is a Cinderella-type girl who’s tasked with assassinating the prince—an intriguing premise. The cover is cool. With a wide variety of magical characters from elves and fairies to brownies and half-giants, this story kept up a decent pace. I guessed both major identity twists early on. Missing commas (especially in the latter half of the book) kind of messed with my reading flow. The ending was abrupt after the reveal of the second twist, leading into the second book in the series.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love reading anything by this author. She is a great story teller and builds her worlds great. I loved this spin on Cinderella and can’t wait until the next book is out. I look forward to seeing how more of the story plays out. I thought the characters were great and believable. There were plenty of twists and turns in the plot that keep you reading and wanting to know more. I will continue to read books by this author and highly recommend them to others.
What an amazing start to this series! I really enjoyed reading this, and was completely engaged from the story from page 1. A very well written story and unique retelling with a surprising twist, and will keep you hooked until the very last sentence. A book I would most definitely recommend to anyone who loves retellings and YA fantasy. I honestly cannot wait to see how the series will continue 😍 *note , I am leaving this review to share my honest opinions on the story.
A very unique Cinderella. She's has a lot to learn but she is eager to make a difference. I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation. The pace starts steady but builds with the intensity of her predicament. Not really a cliffhanger but this is very enticing, emotionally engaging and compels the desire to read the next one to see what happens next in the life of this Cinderella. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Enjoyed this new take on the Cinderella spins. Nothing like our favorite heroine being a fae and having her godmother send her to assassinate the prince. Now no Cinderella story is complete without the stepmother and step sisters, but this book makes a new twist with a story that is not all mushy but full of twists and turns.
Wow I loved this Cinderella retelling with a real twist!! As we all know the original Cinderella story I love that this books started right in with background information provided as needed. I love the whole idea of machines vs magic. I was caught up in this book from the first word. Can't wait to read the rest of this series!!!
yes! kick ass cinderella lol.. i loved it.. it was so much fun.. interesting and sexy.. strong and fun. when you are sent to kill someone but fall in love instead.. haha.. it was wonderful and made me happy to read.
This is pretty good YA.. I enjoy the characters. I do think the heroine is a little naive and some scenes have unnecessary drama, but overall a very good read
**I received a free copy of this book from Voracious Readers for an honest review.**
I LOVED this book. There was nothing super strange or different about it. I can see where the author was perhaps trying to include some surprise twists, but I read enough fantasy that I saw these coming from a mile away! However that did not shift my opinion of this book.
This is simply put a well written and engaging story which entertains and draws the reader in. I am not always totally sold on the main character, but I can accept her faults as part of her humanity. I may have recieved this book for free, but I purchased the next three so far and read them in very fast succession.
I really liked the re telling, the obvious connections that we all know to cinderella, but then some of the twists which the author brough in were fascinating. I think this would be a great “intro to fantasy” type of book, but even for those of us who are a little more hardcore it is a fantastic easy read.
I do wish I could give half stars - as would lean towards 4.5 stars, not quite enough for a 5 star read but pretty darn close!
Despite the glaringly bad grammar in the first chapter I plunged on, finishing the book. While the plot itself is predictable, the story is engaging. Unfortunately, there is a lack of proper editing. Many times there were phrases that were jarring and awkward. Oftentimes, this was due to inaccurate punctuation, but sometimes sentences ended prematurely. There were also times when things didn't make sense for the situation, as if they were thrown in as a plot device to create drama. Not to mention the chronicly incorrect belief that lizards are squishy and slimy. They definitely are NOT slimy, and very few are squishy. And if I have to read "fisted hands" one more time, I think I'll puke.
Despite all this, it has potential. If you can get past these things, it's a story one can enjoy. Though, I would suggest the author send it to an editor for a thorough vetting.
For my clean readers: violence-fighting, torture, and mild descriptions of gore. No language. Mild romance in a love triangle.
You should know this story in one form or another, but this telling has some big surprises for you just waiting to be discovered by you. In general, it follows the story of Cinderella. Evil stepmother, two sisters-in-law, broken promises, and the prince’s ball, but there is so much more. It is a story of the repression of one group over another and a story of revolt. This tale is definitely a reimaging of the Cinderella story.
Got to say I like this retelling of the Cinderella tale. The world-building was as expected at first, then the story matured, and there were differences between the fairy tale and this version. Then the characters had their script to follow, but between points A and B, they could go anywhere, and they did.
This version of the Cinderella telling is definitely not your normal children’s book story. It has mature themes in its fantasy setting and is modernized to include technology, but if you want a story turned on its end, you might like this read. I give it five stars out of five stars.
So far Ellery seems selfish and whiney. With the first 3 chapters feeling a little all over the place.
Further chapters see character development in Elle. As she begins her dangerous journey to save her friend, she discovers more about herself than she's ever known. She starts making acquaintances in the most unlikely places. In her self-discovery, she uses a lot of internal anxiety. Gets a lot of "hits to the gut", "insides" and everything else that deals with her internal organs. Mildly annoying.
I have to admit, I did get shocked with a surprise twist I should have seen coming.
There were some misunderstandings that need not have happened, it seemed they were there to create a drama where none was needed. Or perhaps I'm looking for weaknesses 🤷🏽♀️.
I will be reading book two as I would like to see how this continues.
