Understanding the Menopause: A Practical Guide to Managing your Symptoms

Rate this book
Readers say... "The only menopause guide you need" "Exactly as the title says..." "The best book on the menopause I can find..." "All you need to know..." Up to 50% of women suffer symptoms of the menopause badly enough to seek medical advice. The dramatic hormonal changes that hit women in middle age can have a significant impact on our quality of life, which may last for as long as 12 years after your last period. “Understanding the Menopause” is a guide to life during the Peri-menopause, and the menopause itself. It also covers the post-menopausal phase and the changes that affect the rest of your life. The book seeks to explain what causes this midlife crisis in Women’s Health, how changes in lifestyle can help to maintain health during the menopause, as well as the pros and cons of the available treatments. It focuses on evidence and aims to help avoid exploitation of anyone desperate for relief by explaining how various remedies on the market may or may not work. It also looks at fertility, and the controversial issue of pregnancy over 50. There is no cure for the Menopause. It is a natural part of our lives, but, armed with the right knowledge and understanding, you can find your way through it and look forward to a happy healthy future. This book will help you get there.

As someone heading full tilt towards the menopause, I have been somewhat anxious and apprehensive as to what this would entail and how it would affect me physically and emotionally. None of the women in my family had a natural menopause, as both my Mother and aunt were subject to hysterectomies for one reason or another. My grandmothers never spoke of such things.

Therefore, I have nothing to go on as to what I may expect or how well or badly I may experience this event. Unfortunately, many see the menopause as the move into 'old age' where a woman is no longer relevant biologically. I was verging towards this attitude which didn't help with my apprehension.

This book has changed my attitude completely and helped reassure me that the end is not nigh. A great read, written with humour and kindness. Written from the author's expert knowledge and personal experience, this book feels like a close friend giving you advice.

I particularly like the way it not only tells you about the symptoms of menopause but also why they occur, providing easy to understand scientific explanations of the biological and chemical changes and their affect on the female body. It then offers common sense and balanced advice on how to alleviate/lessen these symptoms, from lifestyle changes to medications and importantly, what "cures" to avoid.

Most of all for me, this book offers a new perception for those of us facing the menopause. That it is temporary, it will pass as will it's symptoms - that It is not the end but the beginning of a new phase of living which is ultimately as fulfilled and positive as you are going to make it.

A realistic AND uplifting book which has certainly readied me for the way ahead and put my mind at rest over a lot of questions and anxieties that I had. I would definitely recommend this book if, like me, you want to know more and be reassured about the changes to come...

Too serious and a bit depressing, I was expecting a bit of humour, it was like an advert for taking HRT

Not useful

So disappointed with this book, it holds nothing of any value for someone like myself who has had breast cancer. Also after a hysterectomy I was plunged into a really fierce menopause but there’s nothing out there to help. I have several hot flushes an hour, but I don’t want to take antidepressants- anyone who’s taken them knows they are horrible things. Who wants to live with a veil between them and the world? I took them once a few years ago. Never again. I nearly lost my job because of those drugs. So I would not recommend this book.
