Liv wants her friends to think she has the perfect life. But honestly? She’s running on empty. Desperate for a break from her needy family, Liv is determined that as she and her three life-long friends turn fifty they will honour their promise to each other – made on a beach at sunrise twenty-nine years before – to celebrate this milestone together.
And what better place to celebrate than a gorgeous villa in the Algarve? They’ll enjoy the stunning beaches, picturesque fishing towns and glorious climate, and maybe be spoiled by the gorgeous Eduardo, who’s making one particular heart unexpectedly flutter…
Liv’s friends can’t wait to escape with her: Debs is newly single, Fiona is caring for her mum, and Samantha is grieving. But does time away make the heart grow fonder? Is the thought of returning to reality too hard to bear? Is what they have really all there is to life?
It begins as a reunion in the sunshine, but little do the four friends know what life-changing decisions they’ll all be making before their flight home…

Old friends, warm sun, good food, and lots of fun. Kim Nash has done it again! An uplifting heartwarming story packed with relatable characters. Liv, Deb, Samantha, and Fiona have been friends forever. Even though they don’t see one another that often they are honoring a pact they made when they were 21 and traveling to Portugal for a girls week to celebrate their 50th birthdays. Each woman has baggage that they will unpack during their getaway. Liv is married and the mother of two sons. She feels as though her family takes her for granted, she is overworked and under appreciated. Deb’s husband just left her for a younger woman PFP. Deb is a comfort eater and very insecure in her own skin. Samantha is dealing with grief and an adult son who she feels no longer needs her. Fiona is dealing with a mother with dementia and all the stress associated with taking care of an aging parent. All four women are in much need of some time away. Time spent with good friends, warm sunshine, and a GNT or five.
Wow this was probably one of the most relatable books I’ve read all year. Having just turned 50 myself a little over six months ago I related to each of these characters. I would have loved to join them for the week at this gorgeous villa in Portugal. I loved how like most old friends do these ladies picked up just where they left off. They were all so supportive of one another. I loved how they listen to one another, pushed when needed, but backed off when asked. I probably liked Liv and Deb’s stories best, but I think there was more focus on them as well. Also really liked the side story involving Mikey The guy that put the details of this perfect trip together. Sunbathing, yachts, golf lessons, shopping, Prosecco, catching up, romance, ladders, casinos, delicious dining, and so much more.
If ever there was an apt title tis this, the sun beams off every page in this feel good, really good story Debs, Fiona, Samantha and Liv are life long friends and this year they are making good on their Corfu holiday promise when they were 21 of all being together for their ( approx ) 50th....in the most stunning villa in Portugal with pretty much everything there for them via Mikey ( imagine a ‘holiday wish list fixer’ ) a contact of Liv’s,it’s paradise and the 4 intend to have a holiday they wont ever forget As the days luxuriate on and they eat, drink and be merry ( and get a tan ) each realises they have decisions, massive decisions to make that could change their lives forever, some back at home and some in Portugal! I loved it, the humour, the truthfulness, the exploration of their lives, the meaning of such real friendship and got to say liked every character ( each very different, Deb was my fav fav ) and also enjoyed everyone else who made an appearance in the book, there wasn’t one cast member I didn’t like The words ‘feel good’ were made for this book and I really did feel uplifted reading it, I also wanted to pack our cases and head off to Portugal so enticing were the visuals given of scenery, food and lifestyle Written in a way that made you feel you were part of it and that you actually knew these 4 I can only say its a book made for the now and should be prescribed to everyone as I guarantee you will enjoy and feel happy and trouble free reading it 10/10 5 Stars
This is a story that centres around 4 women who have been life long friends. All are quite different in personalities which is probably why their friendship has lasted and what better way to celebrate turning fifty than spending it with good friends somewhere hot?
To start with we get to see a glimpse of what life is like for the four friends in their home surroundings. All are dealing with different life issues and I enjoyed getting to know them all better. I have to say I felt drawn more to Debs and Liv. Mainly because there were aspects of their lives that I could relate to more than the other two women.
As like many of us in these uncertain times, I probably won’t get abroad this year. The author though brings that holiday feeling and sun in bucket loads when we tag along with the four friends to Portugal. I fell instantly in love with the villa and gorgeous setting. As well as a few of the male characters in the story. Don’t tell the husband! 😉
What can I say other than I loved this story. I picked it up one sunny afternoon and before to long I was closing in towards the ending. I was dreading turning each page as I didn’t want it to end. These four women who were strangers at the start, felt like life long friends by the end and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. There was plenty to keep me entertained as we see these women realising things about themselves as well as their lives. I loved seeing the highs and lows they were going through as well as meeting Mickey and Eduardo who definitely brightened things up even more!
Sunshine and Second Chances is a gorgeous summery read about finding yourself. It is a wonderful reminder that it is never too late in life to do anything or make changes. The friendships were heartwarming and funny, as well a couple of occasions that tugged on my heart strings. Kim Nash is without a doubt my go to author for realistic characters who are both relatable and lovable. Her books are guaranteed to make me smile and they are like a comfort blanket as they transport me away offering me an entertaining and feel good read. Wonderful!
They did it on their 21st birthdays and they are doing it again as their 50th birthdays approach. Four friends, Debs, Olivia, Fiona and Samantha, separated by distance and time, are following through on a promise made when they turned 21. They are getting together again for a few days. The destination is a beautiful villa in Portugal. The five days that the women spend together will change them forever. If indeed life offers second chances, these four lives will get a reset.
Are they content in their lives, or will they learn things about themselves - and each other - that will afford them the chance to grab at more? A bit about them. Fiona is dedicated to her mum, who is suffering from Alzheimers. Their interchanges were heartbreaking, but it is more than clear of the love and dedication Fiona has. Then there is Debs, divorced and insecure, certain that any chance at happiness is forever gone, especially since her ex-husband Dave left her for another woman. What about Samantha, who is still grieving after a terrible loss? Lastly, Olivia, married mum of two and still looking fabulous? She seems to have it all, but is she happy?
While their hosts, particularly Mikey and Eduardo, do their best to give the women a beautiful time, rich with fine wine and the most delectable meals, emotions give way to all of them, some with far-reaching and wonderful results.
This was such an enjoyable story by Kim Nash. I felt a connection to each woman in one way or another. I loved the emotional edge that threaded through the pages of this book. I also loved the snippets of humor along they way. As things wrapped up for a marvelous conclusion, I was left with a smile on my face. I think readers are going to love Sunshine and Second Chances as much as I did as it will make for an outstanding summer read.
Many thanks to Kim Nash for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Oh, I do think that Kim must be some sort of witch because every book I read is just magic. I love this! 4 women turning 50 go to Portugal for a week. All with different “problems” in their lives that they need to sort out and move on from to find some happiness. I felt I was in the Algarve with these ladies, wish I was really there but it was peaceful and beautiful and so much fun!
Olivia aka Liv, is a mum to two raucous boys and a wife to a successful businessman, but they only see her has a skivvy, is it too late to save what she loves the most?
Debs, recently divorced and really not happy in herself hides behind food and drink. But will she find happiness at the end of the bottle?
Fiona is struggling with her mother’s dementia, worries she will get it and has so much guilt leaving her behind, Will she be able to forgive herself and find a new path for her and her mum?
Sam, a widow left with more aggro and a son who isn’t interested and takes her for granted. Things need to change but will she needs able to repair what she has?
The week they spend away just sounds so lush. They are able to recoup their friendship and rebuild. I love seeing the lives of these women. Each time I was reading one of their stories, I wanted to read someone else’s but then I didn’t want theirs to end. These are 4 women I love, ok they did seem overly nice to each other sometimes when you just wanted to say what you felt, but it was a nice balance because at the end of the day the sisterhood is what mattered, not the drama. The title of the book really invigorates the story, it is a tale of second chances indeed and I loved watching the women come on holiday heavy-hearted and a bit gloomy, a bit like having a rain cloud over their heads and looking grey as they fret about everything. When the holiday comes to an end, it is like an entirely different group of women, there is a lightness to them, there is a lot of love, forgiveness and sunshine.
I really hope we get to see these ladies again on their next holiday. They are an amazing bunch of friends who would go to the ends of the earth for each other. I also have to say I love the mention of Grace and Vinnie from Amazing Grace that made me so happy, a reminder of my favourite slice of magic.
Kim’s writing is always a joy to read. She writes a story where I just keep turning the pages and forget what the time is! This is the 3rd book and she shows no signs of slowing down or losing momentum with her characters or storytelling and setting the book in the Algarve is beautiful. You can’t help but smile when sitting in the garden reading this!
Sunshine and Second Chances is Kim Nash’s third novel and is an absolute lush of a book, it’s just lovely, lovely, lovely!
It was a story about four friends who pledged on a shared holiday celebrating their 21st birthdays that no matter what they were doing with their lives they’d meet up and do the same again for their 50th birthdays.
Olivia, Samantha, Debs and Fiona are living quite different lives and each of them are at a point when they need to step back to take stock, for different reasons they each need and dread this holiday in equal measures. They arranged to meet in the airport in Faro, Portugal and when they do the last twenty nine years are stripped away as if they have never happened.
I got to spend a week virtually eating, drinking and lazing in the sunshine with the girls as they unwound and relaxed, the tensions of their everyday lives unfurling out of them as they settled into the easy comradeship of long established friendships, sharing secrets, giving and taking advice and remembering what true friendship is all about.
This was a dream of a book, perfect for the lazy Sunday I spent reading in the unaccustomed sunshine in my back garden in England. I could have quite quickly packed my case and joined them in a heartbeat - in fact I started looking at travel agents websites for villas in Portugal as soon as I closed the final page.
Kim has captured the very essence and importance of slowing down, giving and sharing quality time with friends. Good friends truly are the best tonic anyone could have and Kim has captured that essence perfectly. Her descriptions of the villa and surrounding towns are so vivid I could imagine walking out of my patio door and onto the terrace to join the ladies for a gin and tonic before dinner. Or sitting in a pretty harbour eating at sunset - I’m smiling just writing this remembering! I loved all of the characters and was thoroughly engaged with their stories and so wanted happy endings for them all.
This is a perfect, feel good read that will will wrap itself around you and warm your heart. I’ll defy any reader not to be trawling the travel brochures looking for holidays to Portugal after reading this and the next time I’m feeling a bit jaded or low because the skies are grey and I’m cooped up inside I’m going to take this book and re-read to lift my spirits.
Huge thanks Kim for writing such a belter of a book, I can see so much of you in this book, you really have put your heart and soul in it and I’m honoured to count you as one of my friends - we don’t get to see each other too often but when we do it’s like we saw each other yesterday.
Left me with a smile on my face. Such a heartwarming and just lovely story.
Meet Debs, Liv, Fiona and Samantha, four ladies in the prime of their life, friends but they haven't seen each other much over the years, but had always said they would go away in or around their 50th birthdays.
And where better than the villa Liv has organised in the Algarve, a week of of being able to reconnect with each other and where they all need to make decisions about what their lives will be like going forward.
What a holiday it is, there is fantastic food, some great excursions, some relaxation and a lot of good conversation between the friends.
It was Debs and Liv's stories that were the strongest and I think we did get to know them better than the other ladies, whereas although I had no issues with Samantha I just didn't really connect with her.
Whereas from the start Liv is introduced to us as a mother of 2 (well 3 if you count how her husband treats her), and generally all around unpaid lackey. I could understand her frustrations and was curious to see just what decisions she may come to.
And then Debs, she is a comfort eater, is recently single and seems to be stuck in a bit of a rut. She has no self confidence, and was almost tempted to not go on the holiday as a result. Yet slowly buy surely as the week progresses she really comes into herself... and it may or may not have something to do with the villa's gardener!
This is a perfect read for these troubled times, it is full of heart, and with its gorgeous location, giving me a taste of Portugal from the comfort of my armchair, and made me feel as though I was one of the ladies on this trip.
Another incredibly enjoyable book from the talented Kim Nash, an author who is becoming more and more accomplished with each story.
Thank you to the author for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Close friends who celebrated their twenty first birthdays by going on holiday together agree to meet up and holiday again to celebrate their fiftieth birthdays. They travel to a villa in Portugal where they find much more than they'd anticipated. It is a chance for them to reconnect, reflect, explore and decide . . . . .
This is a brilliant read, superb to escape into and I found it so easy to relate to the delightful characters, warts and all! The story shows the facade we show to the world can hide many different dramas, worries and concerns and that our closest friends can be fantastic supports whilst we work through our personal dilemmas, if only we let them! This is a lovely, heartwarming story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are well developed, believable and each has their flaws which make them so unique and realistic. They may have been strangers to me at the start but by the end of the story they felt like old friends. This is a sumptuous summer holiday that most of are unlikely to experience, especially anytime soon, but it was great to visit Portugal and see the sights and taste the food vicariously through this story. There are other brilliant characters, too, especially Mikey and Eduardo, who have their own quandaries and dramas!
This is another delightful read by a highly talented author. It is a story which shows it is never too late to make changes in your life and to strive for happiness . . . . as well as being a fantastic, fun read that is great to escape into and reading it had me giggling through it and left me with a huge grin on my face. With more than one romance involved, this is also a story of reevaluating your life and helping make changes for the better.
I was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion after choosing to read it and thoroughly enjoying doing so.
I really enjoyed this gently humorous and touching book about a group of four friends who go to Portugal together to celebrate their fiftieth birthdays. It’s a lovely summer read and I enjoyed being transported on holiday to the Algarve, with some great descriptions of places and activities - I just wish I could have gone there myself!
While there’s a love interest element to this story, what binds it together is the gorgeous friendship between the friends, through ups and downs. I really enjoyed how, over the course of a week, they help each other realise some important life lessons to get their happy endings. Also, while I’m ten years younger than the ladies in this book, there was a lot I could relate to and Kim Nash does needy teenagers and husbands very well!
Such a lovely book. Highly recommend. Makes you feel like you are in The Algarve with this fun set of women who on hitting their 50th birthday embark on an enlightening and life affirming trip away.
A beautiful story which melted my heart from the first page to the end. Author Kim Nash had given me the perfect book in these tough times. Warmth permeated from every corner of the prose, enveloping me in a gentle cocoon as I turned the pages.
4 friends from childhood had made a pact to spend a week in Portugal around their fiftieth birthday. Each one had issues at home and needed to discover and perhaps reinvent herself. A journey of a lifetime to their school days and back was what happened in those 7 days along with a dream for the future.
My second book by this author, the fragrance of the story swirled around me from the moment I opened the book. Reading the first page, I knew I was in for some wholesome love. Friendship between the women came alive in the words written by author Kim Nash.
The women were rock-solid. They were loyal to each other, supportive, yet with minor skirmishes; that made them real. The ladies slowly endeared themselves to me. Their conversations, in between their fun times of G&T and soaking up the sun, were honest and dealt with issues all of us go through. The author managed the nuances quite sensitively.
What were sun and drinks without some hunky men. And there were a couple of those who could melt my heart amongst other parts, with their enthusiasm and honesty. I can safely say, only in fiction is such perfection found. Where can I find one for myself, I wonder?
The story had its ups and downs as solutions to their lives were found. I was greedy enough to long for more angst and serious twists. The book was a pearl, formed in the oyster of goodness, that could safely anchor me, while allowing me to float in its pages.
An buoyant happy read that affirmed the strength of friendship and family, especially during tough times.
Oh, what a wonderful book filled with hope, and positivity, and looking beyond your struggles, finding solutions, and living your best life, even if it may start at around fifty!
Olivia, Debs, Samantha and Fiona are firm friends and have been, for decades. Life may have moved them away from each other physically, but theirs is a friendship where you can pick up where you left off, be it a day ago, or even if you left it months.
The last time they went away was for their collective 21st birthdays. This time, they are celebrating their fiftieth birthdays together on a break in beautiful Portugal.
Each woman has her own internal struggle, which they haven't been entirely honest about with their friends.
Olivia, happily married to a successful man, with two boys, a dog, a dream house, and everything she could wish for. Or does she? Debs has found comfort in food since her marriage broke up. The constant nagging doubt of not being good enough drives her to fill her voids with food, resulting in a body she is unhappy with, especially considering her ex found his new future in the shape of a gym bunny. Samantha is still grieving. She lost her husband, and while trying to bring her son up, with only happy memories, she covers many of her own feelings had issues. Her son is now grown, and has his own life, but she can't seem to find her own. Fiona has given up all her hopes and dreams to care for her mother who is sinking, slowly into the depths of Alzheimer's. She can't leave mum for a second but desperately needs a break.
Just the introduction of these four women brought feelings of resonance in me. I could relate to certain situations they were in.
They travel, tentatively, to Portugal, to a villa that is well beyond their average means but funded mainly, by Olivia's husband.
Each woman falls back into their friendship, and over the week they are there, they discover new things about each other, small shadows that each has been trying to conceal.
It was heartwarming to see how all four women grew, during that week, with the support of their old friends, and a few new ones too.
Mikey was a sweetheart, too, the holiday host with a secret of his own, which the ladies help him to overcome.
And there is romance, too, but I'm not spoiling any of the fun! Set in the beautiful Algarve, it'll help to warm the cockles of your heart, and give you a taste of sunshine, especially at a time where we are unable to get out ourselves!
I loved immersing myself in their world, and it made me think of those special friends I have, the ones who I'd drop anything for... and thinking ahead five years, about a possible trip together...
Thank you, Kim Nash, for a wonderful story. I, for one, would love to know what happens next for them all. I'm definitely up for joining their 70th cruise!
I just love Kim love Kim Nash's style, so easy to read. I couldn't put it down. Full of feel-good fun, hope and friendship...with some family issues thrown in. A story of four old friends who are all turning fifty this year. They made a promise on holiday when they turned 21 to do the same….take a holiday together. Due to living in different areas they’d lost touch slightly, but kept in contact by phone. They all had different circumstances now. Liv organises it all with a very useful contact, Mikey, in Portugal. He found the perfect villa for them and was on the end of the phone for anything they might need. The ladies meet at the airport in Portugal, where their adventure begins. The villa was to die for, with gorgeous balconies and terraces and an amazing pool, set in beautiful gardens. The ladies all have something to worry about, be it a marriage that’s seen better days, feeling frumpy, a mum with dementia, and grief. They start to talk things through like they used to. They even make notes about how to make some positive changes when they get home. They are feeling inspired, and it really shines through the pages, it’s even inspired me a bit. It makes them feel like things aren’t so bad after all. Debs’s partner left her for PFP, Penny, from a few doors down. She feels fat and frumpy and very self-conscious about her figure, but a certain gardener named Eduardo notices her and thinks she is absolutely gorgeous. I fell for him big time. The ladies have a few days out including golfing, on a boat, a local market. Debs gets up to other things too! When the week comes to an end there are some surprises, you’ll have to read it to find out. A great story that takes you to Portugal with four old friends, staying in a gorgeous villa with a dishy gardener....what more could you want?! I thoroughly recommend this book, just gorgeous. https://steflozbookblog.wordpress.com/
Sunshine and Second Chances is the perfect remedy for everything that’s been happening around us lately.
Take four friends. They don’t see each other so often but their bond is stronger than time. Each woman has her life, her problems, but all are nearing or hitting the big 5-0 and what best than to celebrate with those who know you best?
I miss my friends. Like Live, Fiona, Samantha, and Debs, we don’t meet up regularly, but if I called at three in the morning with a body to hide, they’d come right away. I really enjoyed feeling the same connection between the characters in the book. No matter what happens, some people are your people, and few things are more comforting and precious than this.
To mark their reunion, Liv goes big. A villa in Portugal, nothing less! And like often, it is far from the routine and their houses that those friends will reconnect with themselves. It is so easy to lose yourself in the rush of life. With Sunshine and Second Chances, Kim Nash reminds us that it’s okay to stop and think, and that it’s never too late to change what doesn’t make you happy.
This novel is filled with sun, laughter, tears, and love. There is a protagonist for any of us to relate to. Serious subjects are mentioned, because hey, women carry the world and life is not a bed of roses. However, the book keeps its lightness thanks to the power of friendship. Kim Nash’s lovely writing makes us jumps from one character’s life to the author, cleaning up the mess life has made. The book is sprinkled with humor and wise words that hit the spot. Who said women over 45 were no fun? They clearly haven’t met this crew!
I can’t think of a better book to read with a G&T this summer. It will warm your heart and give you hope. Exactly what we need!
If you're in my corner of bookland, you'll know that this is a much anticipated Summer read, and actually, after seeing the beginning chapter after opening by accident some time ago (commitments sometimes stop me reading books I've an itch for), I was absolutely chomping at the bit to get to this, an extremely summery read!
And we are straight into a sunny positive prologue and the promise of a trip to Portugal with a group of friends that are all circling their fiftieth birthdays.
We moved from pov to pov of each of the ladies, seeing their various home issues and then their holiday alter egos as they came to understand what they needed to be happy. I liked that I was reminded who the characters were, and was intrigued when a male pov arrived too!
This book has many themes that could possibly strike chords with readers and invoke some tears, and there were many moments I was thrilled for the characters. Of course, with that came the odd thing that caused slight bemusement, not least the fact that the ladies as a group didn't seem to be there for each other (when alone yes, when together no!), the timeline in relation to a love at first sight scenario and a lady who (in my probably sheltered possibly privileged position) I found to have forgotten her kids (I can beyond identify with being at the end of your tether, or feeling the 'is this really it?' thing, but was a bit uncomfortable with her actions if I'm honest). Saying that, I raced through the book, relishing the triumphs, feeling the lows and smiling so much. Definitely a summer read to pick up and devour!
Having read Amazing Grace, I wanted to save this for the Christmas break, knowing it was set in the Algarve, where the sun always shines. We follow a group of friends who have lost contact over the years. Now approaching middle-age, they agree to spend a few days together under the Portuguese sun, reminiscing about past adventures whilst each coming to terms as to where life has deposited them. All the characters were well-formed, each with their own quirks and complexities. However, Liv and Debs really stood out for me. Liv, who plays Cinderella, whilst her family largely ignore her, and Debs, who is coming to terms with single life after a marriage breakdown. As the days pass, each of the women opens up, finding empathy and understanding from the others. Yes, there are a few heated moments between them, but all is settled quickly as the deep bonds of friendship hold them all together. I really enjoyed the inclusion of Eduardo, the dashing local who takes a shine to Debs, as the others look on, giggling and willing her on. There are no fire and brimstone revelations, yet each character understands the things that need to be put in place to steer them in the right direction, which the author does effortlessly, giving the book a realistic edge. A lovely book, well-written, with a wonderful warmth that will hook you after the first few pages. Highly recommended.
I whizzed through this uplifting, heart-warming book! In an insecure world, it provided solace and reassuring resolutions. It was also great to read about a cast of women with long-established ways of life reinventing themselves with the support of their friends – definitely an inspiring read, as well as an escapist one!
Sunshine and Second Chances took me back to the beautiful Algarve, and its own special magic. This story of four old friends who use the chance to reconnect and fixing what’s gone wrong with their life is instantly recognisable for most of us. I did struggle a little with keeping the women apart but overall it’s a lovely read for a summer day.
This is a lovely light read to enjoy over the summer. Four ladies get together to celebrate a big birthday and their strong friendship is the basis for lots of fun adventures, much needed relaxation and supportive encouragement to move forward with their lives. All this takes place under the beautiful sunny skies and stunning scenery of Portugal which Kim brings to life in each chapter. Cheers!
Liv, Debs, Samantha and Fiona are life long friends who made a promise on a beach twenty nine years ago that when they reached fifty they would celebrate the milestone together. Now they have reached their fiftieth year Liv is determined they will honour that promise and books them a beautiful villa in the Algarve, Portugal. They're all looking forward to getting away as each of them have their problems back home and need to escape for a while to rethink their lives and what they each want for their future. Little do they know at this point how life changing their decisions may be, especially for one of them.
Sunshine and Second Chances is a story of friendship, these are four friends that, even though they don't live close to each other and rarely see one another, when they do get together it's like it was only last week and that's how friendship should be, you don't need to be in each other's pockets 24/7 to be there for each other and to show your support and Nash has depicted this beautifully. The story begins with the author giving us a little background into each of these ladies, the reasons they are looking forward to this much needed break and highlights how easy it is to put a smile on your face and pretend everything is ok, when clearly it's not. Sometimes you need to separate yourself from the situation to figure out how you deal with it and this is what these four do during their week away. I instantly connected with all four of these ladies, their characters are so well written and likeable, that by the end I felt like I'd known them forever too. I've never been to Portugal but Kim's description of it has got me adding it to my list of places to visit, it sounds beautiful. This is the first I've read by this author, it was a lovely feel good read and a great escape, from my usual genre of psychological thrillers, to cleanse the palate.
A lovely, lovely story. This is such a wonderful, uplifting story of friendship, women supporting each other and always being ready to take a second chance at life. It left me with a warm glow in my heart and smile on my face. Just the sort of read we all need right now.
It’s a hat-trick for Kim Nash! This is her third book, and it’s another fabulous, feel-good read that will leave you with a huge smile on your face, and with the feeling that anything and everything is achievable! Take one look at the beautiful cover … don’t you want to just be right there??
Sunshine and Second Chances is a bit of a departure from Kim’s previous two books. Although the strong, vibrant theme of friendship is the predominant premise here, it moves away from the English countryside where the other books are set and takes place in the gorgeous coastal Algarve region of Portugal. The descriptions of the area are so vivid that I almost felt the warm rays of the sun on my face (very welcome, as the weather’s freezing in Joburg right now!). And as if that’s not enough, just wait for all the detailed depictions of the food … oh my word; simply mouthwatering! Like I needed to picture divine, delectable dishes during lockdown!
But the stars of the show here are most definitely its main characters: Olivia (Liv), Deborah (Debs), Fiona and Samantha, four friends who’ve been close since way back when. On a beach holiday for their 21st birthdays they swore that no matter the circumstances, they’d get together again for a holiday during the year they all turn 50. And Liv is determined to make that happen. Luckily she has the means to do that, and manages to plan and organise a fabulous villa where they can spend the week re-connecting. Little do they know, they won’t only be spending the week re-connecting with each other, but also with themselves as they’ve each lost their way a bit and their lives aren’t exactly where they’d like them to be.
I completely identified with each and every one of these women! I’m of a similar age and the issues that each of them were facing were so very real and relevant that I felt like I wanted to sit down and have a heart-to-heart conversation with each of them. Kim has created characters that readers will immediately feel could become their own best friends. They’re genuine in that they’re flawed … they want to make the most of their lives but they’re not sure how. How lucky they are to have each other to talk to. Not everyone is blessed to have friends like these who will be honest with them and about them.
Against a stunning backdrop of Portuguese panoramas, sights and sounds, as each of the four come to terms with how they’ve landed up where they’ve found themselves, they discover their strengths once again. They quickly remember and re-claim the strong bonds they have that have weakened over the years as life got in the way, and they make some decisions that will have a huge impact on all of them when their holiday is over.
This is a wonderful read that will have readers reminiscing about vacations (and if we’ll ever be able to take them again!), sunshine, relaxation, indulgence and most of all … lifelong friends; especially ones who we don’t get to see often, but when we do, we can just pick up where we left off and it’s like we were never apart! It made me think about connection and communication; who we share with and who we want to share with; who brings out the best in us and who recognises us and treasures us for who we truly are.
And special mention has to be made of adorable, loyal Hector, Liv’s dog who is a character all on his own and who deserves loads of cuddles and kisses and long walks!
This is an absolute gem of a book … a gorgeous 5-star read that’s perfect for sunny days on beach chairs, rainy days cuddled up in armchairs, lockdown days that seem to go on forever, when you need something to cheer you up … any days really!
Thank you so much to Kim Nash for inviting me to read an early copy of her book, and to be a part of her blog tour. It’s an absolute privilege to help get the word about this lovely book that I adored!
This might not be the first time I’ve been taken with a group of friends on a holiday in the sun – and it’s something I always thoroughly enjoy, particularly when real-life holidays are such a distant memory. But there’s something really fresh and different about this book – the characters themselves, the really well drawn Portuguese setting, the lives the characters have lived (they’re all 50 or thereabouts) and the baggage they all bring with them, the quality and depth of the friendships, and a particularly perfect touch of romance. All that, and the lovely writing I’ve come to expect… this book was wonderful.
An ensemble piece like this is only as strong as the drawing of its characters, the empathy and believability – and the author entirely nails it. I particularly adored Debs – she’s so much more than the funny fat one, with her party girl front hiding her insecurities and hurt. Some of the detail is just lovely, and there was so much about her that I identified with – eating both the custard tarts in the packet, that feeling when you look in the mirror, not wanting to strip off by the pool, and the disbelief that anyone could find you remotely attractive (and her former partner – and the new model he moved on with – certainly didn’t help with that).
I didn’t find it too difficult to identify with Fiona either, struggling with the care of her mum’s dementia and her own loneliness, so very concerned about leaving her in care while she heads off on her jollies. Liv’s life may be less familiar, but her issues certainly won’t be to too many – a family entirely incapable of functioning without her presence (so very well drawn), a marriage slowly disintegrating. And then there’s Samantha – a real sadness, a long legacy of hurt, the truth unspoken and tearing her apart.
Slowly – and with lots of twists and turns along the way – the friends heal each other, sometimes with a notebook and “to do” list, sometimes just through one talking and another listening. As a portrait of female friendship and the empowerment it can bring, this book is just superb, and it really pierces the heart – these are all women with a strong core that just needs a little nurturing.
Am I making it sound a bit heavy? Oh no, it most certainly isn’t – it’s very funny too, and really joyous as the women recapture their earlier friendship and look forward to what might come next when the holiday is over. And I loved the blossoming romance – a touch of scepticism at first maybe, but it’s all so perfectly handled and really did my heart good. I also really enjoyed the side story about their “fixer” Mickey and his secret – beautifully done.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said “the perfect summer read” this year – but how could I possibly not say it about this gorgeous book? Just lie back in the sunshine, let the author whisk you away to the villa, enjoy the friendships, get immersed in the characters’ stories and urge each one of them along in turn. A thoroughly lovely read, and very much enjoyed…
Just what the doctor ordered for these lock-down times. It delivered everything it promised. The book was charming, light and uplifting.
The story is centered around a group of four lifelong friends who made a pact on their 21st birthdays that they would go away for a holiday for their combined 50th birthdays.
We are brought along on this holiday to the lovely Algarve where we join Olivia, Debs, Samantha, and Fiona. As I was reading in my garden in the sunshine, I became so involved in the story that I felt like I was on location with the ladies. Kim beautifully describes the surroundings and I could just picture the stunning villa, swimming pool and gardens in the idyllic setting. I could tell that this writer had done her research and been to Portugal from her lovely descriptions.
When I first read the dialogue between the ladies as they meet on arrival in the airport at Portugal, I thought to myself that their conversation was more like teenage conversation. However, when I paused and took a step back to think about it, I remembered how we talk when I get together on a night out with my girlfriends. The years melt away and the inner teenagers re-emerge. So, in fact, Kim really hit the nail on the head in her style of writing.
Now this villa is not your typical budget holiday, and I would happily have Mikey, the holiday planner set me up in this location. The setting is magical. The holiday of a lifetime kind of place.
All four ladies are seeking change in their life when they start out on this holiday, and all return home having found something, indeed some finding even more than they were hoping for.
Kim is excellent at writing relationships. She very tenderly describes the relationship between child and older parent with dementia. And this issue is treated with great care and a sprinkling of good humor. Also, just as she did in ‘Escape to Giddywell Grange’, Kim beautifully depicts the loving relationship between a dog and its owner, and I loved these relationships in both books. They were very authentic.
This is a perfect read for the summer, and it guarantees a big smile while you read it. I highly recommend it.
On their twenty-first birthdays - twenty-nine years ago - four life-long friends vowed that they would spend their fiftieth birthdays together on holiday. Liv has the perfect life on the surface but is desperate for a break from her needy family, Debs is newly single after her husband left her for one of her friends, Fiona is caring for her mum who has dementia, and Samantha is grieving the loss of her husband. They each have some life-changing decisions to make as they spend a week in sunny Portugal.
This was a really cute book. It made me want to visit Portugal again - I really enjoyed the descriptions of the scenery and the food and all of the fun that the friends had there. I think my favourite character would have to be Debs; she was really struggling with her weight and body image, and she couldn’t understand how anyone would find her attractive, but she really developed throughout the story. I also really loved Eduardo the handsome Portuguese gardener - he was HOT! But I’m pretty sure that men like him don’t actually exist in real life! All of the characters were really lovable and relatable though, and I think that everyone will be able to see a little bit of themselves and their own circumstances in them. Overall it was a very positive and uplifting story.
If there was one thing that I didn’t like about this, it would have to be that it was a little bit predictable. But I guess that’s what you kind of have to expect from a book that describes itself as “A completely gorgeous and uplifting summer read about friendship and creating your own kind of happy.”
Overall I really enjoyed Sunshine and Second Chances, so I give it 4 out of 5 stars!
I would recommend this to anyone who loves contemporary fiction, positive and uplifting stories, romance, and fun and relatable characters.
I have been side-tracked from France once more, but having enjoyed Kim Nash’s previous novels and then discovering that this book is written about women of a similar age to me, who have all reached a sticking point in their lives, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity of a quick break to Portugal with them.
Four friends from university, who on a holiday to celebrate their 21st birthdays, promised themselves they would get together to celebrate their 50th birthdays too. Life has obscured their friendship over the years, but when Liv reconnects them all and plans a holiday to a villa in Portugal, they are all up for the adventure.
It doesn’t take them long to forget about their lives back home and slip into the familiar friendship they had once enjoyed. Life has taken them all on different paths, Liv is a busy mum to demanding sons and a successful husband. She may want for nothing materially, but there is a lot she is not happy with in her life. Debs isn’t happy either, with her ex-husband for leaving her for a younger, fitter model or with herself for eating and drinking too much. Samantha is lonely now her son has forgotten her in favour of his uni friends and Fiona is having a tough time caring for her mum who has dementia.
As they relax into holiday mode, and the barriers come down, they all realise things need to change and it’s up to them to make the changes. As they begin to make plans for their futures, they see ways in which they can help each other, and their friendship bonds grow. Kim has a real skill in making her characters feel like my best friends and in this book she made me believe anything in life is possible.
This book is a perfect escape from our current covid-mad life. You won’t be disappointed with this on your kindle this summer.
First time read for me of the author Kim Nash, I loved the whole feel to the book when I spotted it in a writing group. Taking a journey to the glorious coastline of Portugal with its glorious turquoise waters and golden sands sounded like a perfect getaway. I enjoy a great prologue, so enticing which made me want to read this story instantly. The opening chapter took me straight into its captivating, action dialogue, laced with the mystery of a second chance. So here I am. Written in third person the author cleverly introduces the reader to four lifelong friends in their individual homes who all have various issues. Well fleshed out believable characters Olivia, Debs, Samantha, and Fiona are celebrating their fiftieth birthday together and as the story unfolds, they soon discover new things about each other. I so loved the comradeship of these fab friends helping each other as well as lending an ear to the lovely holiday host Mickey, he is so sweet. I’m amazed how Kim Nash not only transports us to the beautiful Algarve with her wonderfully described scenes but also has the ability of hitting on various emotions, dementia, feeling a used mother, kids fleeing the nest, humour, and romance that so many readers may relate too. These life-like characters who I feel I know so well, work wonderfully in this well-structured plot, interwoven with fabulously portrayed scenes made this a real treat to read. And the ending wasn’t predictable, phew. So, without any spoilers, if you like a realistic easy-read, heart warmer packed with almost everything don’t miss out on this one. I enjoyed so much. And will be back.
This is the third book written by this author, and I was very much looking forward to reading it after enjoying the previous two books! We are treated to a delightful story of four women who have been friends almost all of their adult lives. Olivia is married to George and they have two sons. George works hard to give his family a good life, but money isn’t everything to Olivia and she is beginning to feel that her marriage has lost its spark. Samantha is lonely following the death of her husband, and never hears from her son who is at university. Debs’s husband has left her for the thin and pretty woman down the road. She couldn’t feel any worse about herself, and the worse she feels, the more she eats. And, finally Fiona has an emotional and tough job caring for her mother who has dementia, and feels guilty leaving her in a care home. All four of them made a pact when they were 21 years old to get together when they all approach or reach 50! Olivia organises a holiday to Portugal for them all, but can they all leave behind their own personal worries and issues to enjoy the delights of what Portugal has to offer?
This was a wonderful story, and out of the three books by this author, this is most definitely my favourite! The book began perfectly introducing us to each of the women preparing to go on their holiday. These introductory chapters gave us just enough to meet them and understand their stories, but left plenty to be revealed as the book continues. All of the women are very easy to relate to and I could see myself in each one of them, in some way, shape or form! It’s obvious they all have their own problems but I loved, not just how they all came together for each other, but also how they had their little arguments or spats showing how realistic and true to life they appeared. It was obvious how much of the author’s own experiences were drawn upon to write this book, as it was all so genuine! Not once did I think it was too far-fetched, or ‘that would never happen’, the whole book was filled with things that you may have experienced yourself! The four women throughout the book were in such a sparkling and close-knit friendship that it made you feel like you’ve known them forever!!
The storyline flowed along at the perfect pace, giving me time to appreciate the location of the book whilst keeping connected with the four friends. I’ve never been to Portugal, but the stunning backdrop of the Algarve made me feel warm and sun kissed and I could just imagine lying on the sunbeds around the pool, being the fifth friend in the group!! I could also imagine meeting some of the very handsome local men we were introduced to and have to admit to being a tiny bit jealous of the lucky woman who caught the eye of the villa’s gardener!
I honestly loved everything about this book. It took me on the perfect journey of escapism to a hot and sunny climate where you could be captivated by the friends problems whilst forgetting your own for a little while! I read this book in just over a day, enjoying the last quarter of it in bed on a Sunday morning, refusing to get up until I’d finished! When I turned over the last page, I was genuinely disappointed that I had come to the end! It is an absolutely wonderful story of long-lasting friendships, family life and hot romance, teaching us to look after and love ourselves, take second chances and that it’s never too late to make changes! Fab, fab, fab! Highly recommend!
