For as long as I could remember, Theodore West was in my life as the support system I needed when my parents were too busy building our family’s future. He offered me shoes to dance on, a shoulder to absorb my tears, and the harsh reality of where my life was leading when I was at my lowest point. And when the future my parents planned derailed after a statewide scandal, I had no choice but to fantasize about one for myself that didn’t involve them. But Theo? He was always in it. My father’s best friend. The man who would undoubtedly end me if I didn’t end him first.
B. Celeste is a new adult and contemporary romance author that gives voices to raw, realistic characters with emotional storylines that tug on the heartstrings.
She was born and raised in upstate New York where she still resides with her four-legged feline sidekick Oliver “Ollie” Queen. Her love for reading and writing began at an early age and only grew stronger after getting a BA in English and an MFA in English & creative writing. When she’s not writing, she’s working out, binge-watching reality game shows, and spending time with her friends and family.
I may have been bedazzled by this gorgeous cover initially, but the actual story definitely won out in the end. Beautifully written, Color Me Pretty is the inspiring story of a young woman that has endured plenty and finds living a battle everyday.
Adele was once political royalty. With a father that was formerly governer, she is no stranger to the limelight or the scrutiny. Life is not easy. Her mother passed young, her father was linked to scandal, and the negative media attention was the final straw. It brought out all the ugly caused by stress, anxiety and ultimately an eating disorder. In fact it almost broke her. Having given up ballet she now tries to find solace in art. The road to recovery is long, but with Theo at her side it doesn't have to be fought alone.
"I’m always going to have days where I have to fight a little harder and that it’s good I can acknowledge the moments when they arrive. And, if I’m being honest, I’m okay with admitting I’m not perfect."
Theodore West might have been her father's best friend and a surrogate family member, but he has also been Adele's biggest supporter. From when Della was a young child, he has offered encouragement, worthy advice and comfort. With their long entwined history, it's not surprising that feelings have developed. However getting Theo to act on them seems highly improbable.
"Adele was no longer the little girl who begged to dance while standing on my shoes, but a grown woman capable of pulling any man to the floor and demanding they dance with her."
In a world that now seems black and white, Della needs more. Trying to distance herself from negativity and toxic friendships, putting herself first is key. And if injecting color back into her life means forcing Theo's hand, well so be it because it's only time til he concedes...
"I wanted to dirty her, taint her, and paint her body with my skilled hands until she forgot why she ever hated herself to begin with."
This book was an emotional slow burn romance between a young woman and a much older man who offered the perfect balm for her soul. And there was plenty of heat to balance out the delicate nature of this story. I was extremely impressed by my first read by this author 💗
Color Me Pretty was a deeply woven emotional love story that was long in the making. These characters went through hell and back to end up in the arms where they felt the most safest and that was with each other. I knew early on that this was going to be the kind of forbidden romance that would raise some eyebrows because of the history dynamic between the characters but that was put on the back burner because these two, you knew they belonged together and their love story was just the beginning.
After going through a personal tragedy that has left an impact on not only her and her loved ones, Adele is trying to get back to some sense of normalcy now that she’s a College Senior. Staying focused but having an outlet is a step to finding some type of balance and with the year she’s had, it’s desperately needed. But her main saving grace comes in the form of a man who’s not only witnessed the heartache right along with her, but has been there for her every step of the way and that’s not going to change any time soon.
What happens when the one person who’s seen all of your flaws suddenly becomes the one you cant live without despite it being wrong? When lines are crossed, will everything change for the better or will these two crash and burn?
As much as I anticipated this book, I was not expecting to enjoy it this much!! I get stupid when I see the words forbidden and age gap so I was honestly just expecting a regular relationship with maybe a few obstacles thrown in for entertainment. What I got instead was so much more than that!! I really felt the struggles and the internal battle that the hero was facing and you knew from the very beginning how much this man cared about our heroine and it showed. I also liked that we got a mystery part to the story and the author did a really good job of portraying that side of things.
Let me be clear and say that these characters were not perfect in any way and certain scenes did drag a bit for me but when you’re talking about how a forbidden romance should be done, I will think about this book. I will remember how these characters struggled and looked hell in the eye just to have a type of happiness that was due and well deserved and I will have the biggest smile on my face because I got to witness their journey.
It took me almost a month to complete this read, not because it was boring or depressing. I just really wanted to savior this read because I connected with Adele’s story so much! Theo and Adele have my heart. I want a five years from now where they are kinda story. I don’t want to leave this world B. Celeste created for me.
B. Celeste Charms Us, AS ALWAYS *arc generously provided by the promo team in exchange for an honest review*
What’s this book about? (I'm trying to give as little spoilers as possible) Theodore West has always been in Della’s life. Whenever she faced a problem, he was there to support her. Della faces off with the biggest challenge of her life and there he is, once again. He’s her father’s best friend. He’s the lead actor of her fantasies. And he’s the man who’ll end her if she doesn’t end him first.
B. Celeste is becoming one of my favorite authors. She always serves the goods. I haven’t met a story of hers that has disappointed me! This was a fast-paced story with lots of drama and obstacles for the leading lady. And the leading man, too. The chemistry between these two characters was steamy and ultra forbidden (Celeste’s specialty HEHE). Theo is a THEO (God in Greek). Damn, he’s husband material if you like them broody, ambitious, caring and HOT. He’s also cute, but that’s the dark romance lover in me LOL. Della was a strong lead. She battled through a lot of issues in this story and she came out on top. She’s a work in progress as many people in her predicament are. Our girl Della deserves that seasoned, aged like wine type of d… She is a legend in this book. I would’ve given it 4.5 stars because I didn’t care for certain aspects of this book (some of the lead’s school life. Also her friendship with Ren wasn’t explored enough). BUT, when I reached the final quarter, I was like this is a full five star read. END OF STORY. B. Celeste had a lot of body image messages to send through this novel and I appreciated every single one of them! What a lovely read! I recommend this read to lovers of age gap romance, romances with deep messages and a steamy chemistry-filled lead couple that will make you SWOON.
ORIGINAL COMMENT: I had intended to give 4.5 stars because there were moments that blabbered too much, but with that ending, I give 5. Sweet.
“...Just remember that you don’t have to change yourself. It’s others who need to change their perspective.”It took a moment, but I found myself agreeing with her.“I know. I’m a work in progress.”
-Best friend’s father trope- This trope is exciting yet very scary for me. I like it so much, but I also seek a sensible reason rather than creepy insta lust, and this story manages to offer it perfectly.
CHARACTERS & STORY
Adele aka Della light brown - dyed platinum blonde 5'2 baby blue eyes, 22 - Perfect girl on the paper but much more behind it! Theodore aka Theo blonde, dark blue eyes, 40 - The Savior, Safe Haven
Theo was Della’s savior since her younger age. He always stood by her; he was his biggest supporter in life. Within time his place in her life changed. Father figure to lover, but always the most important! And her place in his life didn't stay the way it used to be either she is not that baby girl he used to take care of either; she is an admirable young woman. Even though he tries his best not to be beaten by his feelings, what they have is much stronger...And now that her father passed away, he is again the one who stood by her. But how long would it take him to let go finally?
I loved both of them and their relationship.
“Then paint us how you see us. Scarred. Broken. Beautiful. Make it real, because reality fucking hurts, Della.” “Is that…how you see us?”That time, there was hesitation. “I see two people who have seen what the world can do to those less deserving of its wrath.”
FOOTNOTES
*Della is really talented; she can do ballet, paint, and cook *18 years age gap *The name of the book and the cover is GORGEOUS! *Theo is a bit conservative, but I give it to his age, and he curses a lot but still, the man to fall in love with *Colorful sex + mirror sex - Yes, please *She is a nail biter and has weight problems. Her depression, and how she copes up with took a big place in the book, I truly appreciate this. *Their dog Gordon is soo lovely *Della is the governor’s daughter, therefore she is a public figure, and she is always under the pressure of publicity/people. It was so sad to read bout her depression; what she had was real and terrifying. She was always trying her best to be the perfect girl people asked of her. I liked how the author emphasized the IDEA of ''IMPERFECT is perfect, just the way it is.''
“...And, if I’m honest, I’m okay with admitting I’m not perfect. I tried too hard to be my whole life, and that was what hurt me the most.”This was the reason I admired her. Even though she was supposed to look up to people like me, older, wiser, with more life experience, it was me who looked up to this twenty-two-year-old.
OVERALL
*This book is so emotional yet so heartwarming!! I was, sad, happy, and thrilled while reading it. Oh, and the hotness was the perfect pepper and salt for the book. I truly enjoyed this great read!
I wanted to dirty her, taint her, and paint her body with my skilled hands until she forgot why she ever hated herself to begin with.
“Then look in the mirror and watch me while I fuck you.” ... “I see my father’s best friend about to finish what he started a year ago,” she panted. ... “I see a grown woman w-who faced a lot of battles and won most of them. Somebody who wears warpaint in the f-form of—” She mewled when I moved a hand to her front and pinched her clit between my fingers. “—stretchmarks and scars.”
I loved reading “Into the Clear Water” by this author which made this story high on my must read list. So I am saddened to write that I didn’t like it. It wasn’t because it was a father’s best friend romance either. I LOVED that part. Eek. I don’t shy away from taboo or an extra helping of naughty. Lol.
This story took too long to get anywhere and I started skimming near the end because I hate doing a DNF. I also did not like most of the characters. They weren’t nice at all. It felt like mean malicious drama all the time. Our heroine I felt sorry for and the hero I was indifferent about.
I won’t be giving up on this author because I have had a taste of a beloved book from her. This one just isn’t my cup of tea. Eek sorry.
*Read more of my reviews at Whoo Gives A Hoot* Just in case you all have been living under a freaking rock and don't already know...Theodore “Theo” West is all MINE (of course right alongside our fierce leading lady Adele “Della” Saint James and my girl Barbara AKA the incredibly talented author, B. Celeste)! I put my FIRM claim on this sexy as sin older man before I knew anything about him and I am so glad that I did because I am head over heels in LOVE with him! This is my one and only WARNING that you all better back the F*CK off MY man. Now that we got that FACT out of the way, I can tell you all about one of my favorite reads of 2020!
Color Me Pretty is a sexy as sin age gap and father's best friend romance that captivated every inch of my soul with the perfect amount of angst that left me swooning the entire time I inhaled all the words. I have been addicted to B. Celeste's words since before she was B. Celeste (back when she was writing under Barbara C. Doyle) and I have got to tell you that she continues to surprise me every FREAKING time. Her writing is beautifully flawless and gives me ALL THE FEELS as I find myself deeply lost among the pages. Her characters always manages to invoke intense emotions that I never experienced before and has me feeling EVERYTHING.
Della and Theo's love is raw and emotional, it's the kind of story that will tug on all of your heartstrings. They had this invisible force pulling them towards one another and I am so happy that Theo pulled his head out of his ass before he lost Della forever. These two were so perfectly matched and that forbidden age gap left me swooning...especially during those sexy time scenes. These were some of the hottest scenes that we have read from our girl B. Celeste and I could read them over and over again FOREVER.
Color Me Pretty is a book that caught my eye when I read the synopse and I knew I had to read this book. The book is about a forbidden romance, which involves a taboo of our society, but when I finish reading I was feeling that I expected more from this book. Don't get me wrong, the book is good, the writer's writing is great, but I got that feeling that was missing a greater exploration of the matter.
In this book we have the history of Theodore and Adele. We have a forbidden romance because he's Adele's father's best friend and he's often helped in her creation. Their dynamic is weird in the eyes of the outside relationship, because it's obvious the attraction that these two have from the beginning is that they both feel romantic feelings for each other.I liked how protective Theodore was about Adele and how she was her priority since page one. I liked that the author was able to pass the fears, doubts is the conflict he felt about his feelings. Adele was a great character too, she showed mature that sometimes even forgets her age, I thought she was strong, brave to go after that, wanted and liked the theme that the author treated through Adele and to see her manage to get over it.
Although the story is good I thought there was no development in various points, although the author managed to pass the internal conflicts of both characters in relation to their feelings the conflict of the book was short to it, I think there was a whole distress and the judgment that others were missing. For a relationship that brings so much debate, questions and judgments, everything was very easy and there was not much conflict beyond the interns. Another point is that the author treated an important theme through Adele but I thought it might have explored that theme better.
Overall I found a good reading, but it's not my favorite author.
I’m a little disappointed. I liked all the other books that I’ve read by this author so I wasn’t expecting not to like this one as much...
I wanted the story to start off with Adele and Theo’s backstory. HOW they started feeling more for each other. The first time they kissed and Theo came to her apartment. That’s hardly mentioned at all. I felt the story wasn’t as much about their relationship as it was about Adele’s life after her Dad went to prison for corruption as a state governor. Theo and Adele’s relationship was secondary when I wanted it to be the main focus.
I did enjoy it, but I was left with wanting SO much more than was given.
This is B. Celeste at her best. A well-rounded story that tugs at your heart with an unforgettable love story woven through the pages. I won't be forgetting Della's story any time soon.
I was not expecting this story when I started reading this. This is a age gap, dad’s best friend romance and where I was expecting more angst and more a forbidden tale, I was not expecting the emotional story that brought these characters together and the troubles they faced in life.
Della is 22 and is already hurting. She lost her mum when she was younger and her dad has just died in prison after some controversy. One of her main strengths is how independent she is and I admired this, however, it sometimes leads to her being too much in her own head. She has her own demons she’s trying to fight, her body image and an eating disorder from years of trying to be what her mother wanted and to fit into the ballet world. While reading this, it really pulled me into the story and I was fascinated with how she dealt with this, her struggles and denial and was so beautifully written.
Theo, he is everything. He is the most caring and loving person in Della's life. She fully trusts him and is always her support, giving her just what she needs without being judgmental.
From the beginning, the attraction between Della and Theo has always been there. As a young girl, he cared for her when her parents couldn’t, being the person she would want to spend time with. As she got older, to a more mature age, he started to notice her in a different light. But as a 40-year-old who was best friends with her dad, he kept his feelings hidden, until one night it bubbles over and he struggled with his feelings ever since until Della gave him no choice but to act on them further.
There were so many meaning moments in the story and really made me think, and I love how authors can turn that around to make you take note. The journey Della goes though is very enlightening and I loved the hope it brought to show you can get through something with work on your part and with help from those who love you, giving that support. A really good inspirational read that I was not expecting!

The dynamics between Theo and Della are everything I loved between Olly and Charlie. Only exception is that Theo is tougher around the edges.
She's so full of pain, it's bursting at the seams. Nothing she does seems to expel it. It's heartbreaking, they both are.
I especially like how the cover is Della's actual painting. Nice touch. And when she finally painted her face and she thought she was beautiful oh, the feels.
Quotes:
“Tell me what you see,” he’d demanded. When I didn’t offer him a reply, he turned to me, spine straightened to full height, and told me what he saw instead. “I see a girl who has fallen too many times to the predators of the world who want nothing more than to tear her apart, but I know that girl is much stronger than she believes. One day, that girl will become a woman who wears her confidence proudly. Want to know why, Della? You will fall, fail, and break over and over in this world. But you will also rise, succeed, and put yourself back together because only you can. That doesn’t mean there aren’t people here who want to help—who aren’t willing to make a few threats to those worthy of the breath. Understand, Della?”
“You are the only one who knows your truth,” “Then paint us how you see us. Scarred. Broken. Beautiful. Make it real, because reality fucking hurts, Della.” “Is that…how you see us?” That time, there was hesitation. “I see two people who have seen what the world can do to those less deserving of its wrath.”
I didn’t want to be human. I didn’t want to be… I didn’t want to be.
“Who says we’re a fairytale?” “You’ve loved her for a long time.” “Not like—” “Exactly, boss. You’ve loved her in a thousand different ways. That kind of love is the well-rounded story people want. You don’t only see her as some young girl who looks up to you. You see her for what she grew into. “I think hope goes a long way.” “Hope?” A head bob. “That Adele Saint James can get her happily ever after with someone she’s always had by her side.
The one where I’ve loved Della her entire life. I was just going to love her ten times harder for the rest of mine.
I was so looking forward to this taboo, age gap, fathers best friend romance. The writing was flawless as I would expect from this author and it did have depth and emotion. However, for me, the story was way too slow to get started, I felt it dragged on when I just wanted some excitement. , Having said that the story picked up enormously right near the end and I really did enjoy that part, just a bit too little too late for me.
I did struggle to connect with the characters. The storyline concerning the main character Della was interesting to read about but considering the importance of the subject, I felt the author didn't go deep enough and could have explored it more. Della herself I honestly couldn't bring myself to like. She constantly whined about everything and never seemed to be happy at all, although she was a strong girl which definitely came through in the author's words it just wasn't enough for me to connect to her.
Theo who is considerably older than Della and was her fathers best friend, who played a huge part in Della's upbringing her whole life was an okay character but again considering this is a taboo romance there just was no connection for me between the two characters; yes he was obviously her protector and that came across well but in my opinion, if you are going to write taboo romance there must be a potent intense chemistry going on between the two people concerned and for me, this was lacking considerably with these two characters.
I look forward to this author's future works but this book was just not for me.
I really thought I would love this one and I felt it had the potential to be really good :( I do want to say that this was not awful. The reason for my dnf is simply because I lost interest.
The romance between Della and Theo was not the main focus of this book like I was expecting. This book was focused more on Dellas struggles after her father’s death. Something that I really didn’t like was that Della and Theo already had a history- I wish the book would have started here rather than knowing that the two of them had a night together in the past, it made it hard to connect with the two and feel their chemistry. I do enjoy slow burn sometimes if it is done in a specific way that keeps me gripped, unfortunately with the lack of romance at 61% I just didn’t have much more patience to continue reading and I lost interest in Della and Theo. This book does touch upon some very important and hard hitting topics (tw for eating disorders and anxiety) which took more of a focus in this book, which isn’t a bad thing I just prefer romance books that have the romance at the forefront and the other topics surrounding it.
If you’re looking for a deliciously sexy age gap, father’s best friend romance with a dash of angst, B. Celeste has it covered with Color Me Pretty.
Adele “Della” Saint James is a twenty-two-year-old former dancer, artist and college student. Theodore “Theo” West is a forty-year-old business mogul who has been a part of Della’s life for as long as she can remember. What should have been a strictly platonic relationship turned into so much more, and with both of them fighting their forbidden feelings for as long as they had, it was only a matter of time before sexual desire had cracked through the surface.
Despite society’s viewpoint of the scandalous relationship between the former governor’s daughter and who they saw as little Della’s father figure, these two came out stronger together.
This story was raw, emotional and steamy. I loved that Barbara didn’t hold back with the struggles Della was experiencing as she faced the world after the loss of both her parents – and that’s on top of all the pressure society had put her under.
The heroine of this book was one of the most bland and annoying characters I’ve ever read. It’s no wonder she had no close friends. There was no chemistry between her and Theo throughout the entire book. The story was boring and full of bulky unnecessary details. The love scenes were awkward like they were written by someone who doesn’t know much but reads a lot of romances. This is my second book by this author and once again the writing is juvenile in a way but most of all this book could have been somewhat okay IF there was some true chemistry between her leads. It was like watching paint dry. Never again.
Leaving this book for good at 76%... I've been puting this book down for so many times that it's time to move to new book. Not that is bad written...just I've lost interest. Maybe one day I come back to it.
Slow burn books... are a hit or miss with me. At a certain point... I start to loose interest and my patience. Every now and then... you need to throw a little something, something to keep you interested. This book... was definitely a slow burn. For me... at the 27% mark... I still had no clue where we were going with the main character. I didn’t feel the chemistry between Adele (Della) & Theo yet. He seemed more like a father figure.
I definitely felt Della struggle with her problems everyday. She was struggling to cope with her anorexia and body dysmorphia along with her anxiety. She was definitely battling big issues. It was a daily struggle for her.
The pace of this book is a big issue with me. I’m trying to overlook it.... but, I can’t. This book is really slow. And even when I think things are going to start to pick up after certain things happen between the main characters. It doesn’t. And that was hard for me.
I’m 60% in and I still don’t feel the forbiddeness of Della and Theo. The focus seems to be more on other things. And it’s taking away from their story.
The writing isn’t the problem. It’s the way the story is told. I think if we focused on Della eating disorder and the relationship with Theo. This story would be fine.
But we have the eating disorder, mean girls are out to get Della, the problem with Theo, her painting, her dancing, Her dad’s scandal and murder, the drugs, And another murder/ overdose of a former friend, and her aunt. And the struggle of the up’s and downs of the relationship with Theo. 😳
The suspense aspect in this book was surprising. I mean... I was expecting a forbidden romance... not all that.
It was all too much. And some of the things that happened didn’t work well in the story. Also, I would often forget that Della was 22. Because everyone treated her as if she was a child. And Della never talked back or stood up to anyone. She just shut down. This went on for almost the whole book. I’m 78% into this book and she has yet to stand up for herself. It’s extremely frustrating.
The whole coke scene with Kat was a big what and why. Why would you hold on to a little bag of coke for so long in your purse. Walk around with it like nothing. Especially If you’re not going to do it. The minute Kat put that bag in Della’s hand.... she should’ve just given it back. Or drop it on the floor if she wouldn’t take it back or place it on the coffee table. Not put it in her purse and walk around with it for weeks! I mean flush it down the toilet.
Then the whole dad prison murder. The blackmail. The eating disorder. I wasn’t feeling it at all. I was literally clinging to the little parts of intimacy between Della and Theo. Which wasn’t a lot. Because of everything that was going on.
When I think of forbidden romance all the things I just said don’t pop up. I wanted to feel the pull between Della and Theo. I didn’t. Their romance got put on the back burner with all the other drama going on. I was expecting one thing and got something totally different with this book. And unfortunately for me.... it didn’t work.
This book also had a Gossip Girl (like the TV show) feel to it. Unfortunately... This book wasn’t for me.

"..but there was no medication from the level of self-hate a person had for themselves. There wasn't a pill to swallow to make people love themselves . No injection could make self-worth higher than self-consciousness on a whim."
B is absolutely, hands down, one of my favorite authors and her talent just grows with every book she releases. Her fans (myself included) have been begging her to write a father's best friend forbidden romance, and she definitely delivered! From the very beginning you can feel the attraction, longing, and love Theo and Delia have for one another despite all the obstacles in their way. Theo has been her one constant her entire life, and it's clear that he protects and looks out for her in ways that nobody else in her life does. They have such a delicious back and forth, will-they-won't-they going on, but I love how they would ease back into each other's person no matter what difficulties they faced romantically. Plus those sexy scenes? B is at her dirtiest with these two and I am ALL here for it!
Despite their forbidden love, our author deals with a very emotional topic that so many will be able to relate to. Delia has body dysmorphia, which means she's always at war with what she sees in the mirror. As someone who has never liked what I look like, no matter how much I have weighed, I connected with Delia in ways that I never expected. The passive aggressive, well-intentioned comments from family members and friends that does more harm than anything else, the fact that she was aware of what she was doing but couldn't stop, how it was never enough, the way she was trying to fill a void inside of her where nothing really worked.. It was all so powerful. And I love how Theo was the only one who wasn't blind to her struggles and did everything he could to help her. He was he rock, her motivator, her best friend, and her lover all wrapped in one person and that is exactly what she needed. Delia is so incredibly strong, and no matter how many times life knocked her down, or her own mind tried to veer her off course, she always came back stronger than ever.
Obviously I absolutely adore this book, and even if this trope isn't your usual go-to, please read this anyway. There is so much more I want to say, but this is a book that needs to be experienced first hand. I can't get enough of this incredible author!!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**
I absolutely fell head over heels in love with this book from the get go. This author always reels me in with her words and her thought provoking. Theo and Della were MADE for one another. This author does an amazing job of making me believe the characters are real. I sometimes have to tell myself they arent. She takes me on a journey every single time. But this time, it was deeper for me. It hit home. It made me feel things that no other author has before. Although Della was alot older than my daughter, she reminded me alot of her in ways and I found myself tearing up a ton. I even told my daughter today about this book and how she resembles Della alittle. But that she can IN NO WAY read this (she has only just turned 14 haha) my daughter lost her father tragically in a car accident 3 years ago and he was her WORLD. He was the best father to her. She struggles daily with missing him. And although she is SKINNY, she somehow thinks she is fat. I dont understand it. She sits down and can barely grab onto anything and thinks she dont need to eat. And she will try to not eat anything all day. So when I was reading this I seen the similarities with Della and her eating disorder and her fathers death and it just brought out so much emotion in me. Now Theo, my man. He was there for her EVERY step of the way. Thank God he was. He was her rock. He was her anchor when she was drowning. I am a sucker for an age gap romance. I am a goner for fathers best friend. This was one of my favorites by this author and I am just in awe of her words. I love love LOVE her so very much. She is a writing God. 5 star gold. Thank you for writing this.
Color Me Pretty is a book about the challenge of having to come to the realization of not needing anyone but you. Of being able to realize just how strong you can be even though whatever people expect you to become. Della and Theo’s story fascinated me to read and to see just how much they developed not only as individuals, but together, was one of my favorite parts of the story.
By all means this story didn’t have to be met to a certain expectation nor did it have to be like every story because it wasn’t. It’s about how a woman can feel insecure but the one thing that makes her feel like herself always shines throughout every single bad moment, or even the good moments, in her life. Della had to go through things in order to paint the bigger picture of life. The life that isn’t expected to be pretty, but simply real.
I personally took so much from Della and Theo’s story and their view on certain moments. From the faceless of reality, to painting of life itself. A moment to be able to face anything that people throw at you. To be able to put a face on what is it that made you stronger than who you were before.
(ARC provided in exchange for review) So at this point it’s kind of obvious that I really love B Celeste’s work and Color Me Pretty is no different Although the story is marketed as a “father’s best friend” romance it’s so much more than that, it’s all about overcoming obstacles and finding beauty in yourself again Della our lead heroine has been through hell and back and despite it all she still remained kind and never let it steer her away from who she really was, her journey with overcoming her eating disorder was really emotional to read and I saw a lot of my own struggles in her Theo as well was really great, he truly loved Della no matter what odds were stacked against them and he fought so hard to keep her safe and happy and he had great development as well. I also loved Della’s friend group and seeing her open up to people again and trusting others If I had any minor complaints I do feel like the ending was a little rushed and the resolution just seemed to come so easily but it didn’t completely derail the story for me. All in all, this was another solid book from B and I’m excited for her next book already
This entire book was so emotional and explored so many aspects that aren’t usually spoken about in books. I appreciated the fact that Barbara understood what she was writing about, which made this book have a stronger connection to me.
Della was such a beautiful soul who just needed to be loved by someone in her life. I loved how sweet and caring Theo was throughout this entire book. He was always there for her no matter what they were going through, physically and emotionally.
This isn’t my first book from B and it certainly will not be my last. Theo and Della made me cry and laugh, but I love them so much. My heart broke for both of them but I’m so happy they got their HEA.
2.5 stars. Honestly the rating comes from the style of writing and jumble of ideas on pages. No clear conflicts, resolution or concise conclusion. Most of the book was the main character putting herself down talking about her singular stretch mark and wallowing about her changed friendships and lack of inspiration with her art. I liked Theo and didn’t mind the age gap at all. The taboo part was definitely interesting but *shoulder shrug*
