Elements of: Horror (TW- see end of review), Sci-fi, Paranormal Investigations
With each passing investigation, I found myself liking these short stories (which all correlated with one another) more and more. Honestly, before I reached the 30% mark though, I thought this was going to be a DNF for me. The characters felt a tad cheesy and egotistical, at first, because the way the story is set up, their powers, and why they act the way they do isn't expanded upon until you read further along. Each adventure reveals more about the characters in an intriguing way.
Is there sexual tension between the teacher and the student? Maybe yes, maybe no? Was it inappropriate? —Not at all.
It seems there is already a world built around Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow, this book (#0) is their introduction. I'm a little confused by the order of things with the author already having 14 other books out, some including these two character names? Regardless, I ended up thinking this was pretty enjoyable (minus the horror elements involving children. I'm just a big softy!)
Quite neat and witty characters, helping keep the darkness at bay and working with the light. I enjoyed the occult aspects, tools, and adventures. Their car reminded me of Venom for some reason. Haha. The unique and unusual characters grew on me.
NOTES: This may contain Trigger Warnings for some (TW- mentions of rape, child abuse/neglect, blood, death, paranormal, occult activities.)
(There were some spelling and typo errors that need corrections yet.)
I won an e-book copy of this via the Goodreads Giveaway Program. I was under no obligation to write a review, my honest opinion is freely given.
These short stories work very well together in a collection (as opposed to standlone which I know a few people reviewed separately and rated lower). I strongly recommend reading them in this format.
We are introduced to Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow in various settings that contain supernatural, horror and sci-fi elements. Each short story focusses on a certain anomaly and reveals some information about the characters and their abilities. You want to read on to find out why the situation is happening and how it will be resolved as well as any additional information that is building up a picture of not only the main characters, but also other organisations at play in the background (which I presume will be explored in the novel that Jeff Walker is working on).
There is also humourous elements to the stories as well as some all around creepiness. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the last short story ties in with the first short story.
The only cons I found with this collection is that there are some typing errors and some wording/phrases are repeated close together, but these did not detract from my reading experience.
I am very curious to see where the author will take this story and I think a novel will give the room needed to fully flesh out this world.
***I received a free eBook of this for an honest review***
A collection of short stories about 2 people fighting supernatural evils
The stories in the collection are disconnected, and can be read in any order.
Professor Darkk And Miss Shadow show up in places where evil is intruding our world, and cast the entities back out of our universe.
Hopefully, in the next book the author will flesh out Darkk and Shadow. Reading their back stories, how they met, and Darkk's decision to groom Shadow would be enjoyable. Plus, building a framework where these short stories fill in gaps and enhance their storyline would bring a sense of completeness.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Loved this collection of short stories about the powerful and magical duo of Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow. The tone of the stories vary considerably, from the rather light-hearted "Darkk of the Moon" to the dark and disturbing "Ranch of Evil."
This was a Goodreads Giveaway, and I am grateful to the author for providing this copy.
