Sometimes the dogs we rescue… also rescue us. A heart-wrenching and beautiful story perfect for dog lovers everywhere. Fans of A Dog’s Purpose, The Art of Racing in the Rain and Marley and Me will be utterly entranced by this gorgeous page-turner. Madison knows her fourteen-year-old daughter Abbie is struggling. She wishes she could give Abbie stability, the promise of a forever home in Millbury, but she is scared to stay in one town for too long, and every day Abbie seems more anxious. Until a chance encounter with a beautiful, boisterous golden retriever puppy called Duke changes everything… Duke bounces into the community centre where Madison is working and when Abbie meets him she stops pacing the room. Duke is tugging his owner, seventy-five-year-old Arthur, along for the ride, and instantly Madison sees a way she and Arthur can help each other. She offers to train Duke so that Abbie gets to see him, and from that moment the four of them become a family. Madison finally feels like she has a second chance at life and a reason to stay in town, but when her past catches up with her they are all at risk. Duke may have united this family, but will he be able to keep them together? A reminder of the unbelievable bonds we form with the dogs in our lives. Favorite Quote:

That’s the beautiful thing about sharing the love in your heart— it doesn’t mean you have less of it. Love is the only thing that grows the more you give away.

My Review:

I relished this tender and sweet story. Duke’s tale squeezed my heart, stung my eyes, and caused my lips to quiver, and more than a few times. This lovely story included a rescued puppy’s point of view and Duke’s observations were my favorites. The characters were endearing and highly likable, realistically flawed, and each struggling with significant personal challenges. However, they found their burdens were easing once their paths had crossed - which was all due to the exuberant introduction and interventions of Duke. The writing style and storylines were easy to follow, emotive, relevant, and quite moving. I am an animal lover and adore stories featuring clever animals almost as much as the precious animals themselves.

Some people may be turned off by the sentimentality of a golden retriever puppy bringing people together but for me it is a sentimental favorite kind of tale. I may be biased since I had a golden named Duke who was a great companion and friend. The Duke in this story finds a new home with a newly bereaved old man who befriends a woman with an anxiety disorder and eventually it has a happy ending. The golden retriever teaches everyone not to worry and not to be too proud to seek help. Some may find it to be a sappy story but I liked it.

This remarkable story is about how a sweet golden retriever puppy affects the life of the humans he becomes attached too. The point where we meet Duke was so touching. Duke came into the story as Arthur is reading the last letter his beloved wife Rosie left him. Duke was right where he needed to be while Arthur was reading that letter. Duke relays what his mother taught him about humans, how to walk beside them. How to comfort them. Duke was all alone and so was Arthur. They were kindred spirits. It was two months later when Arthur and Duke met Madison and Abbie.

Madison’s daughter Abbie is having a hard time. Their recent move certainly has not helped Abbie to deal with the anxiety that plagues her, or to find friends. Madison is a nurse practitioner and her new job is at the Millbury Life Center, where Arthur is a resident. As a retired judge, Arthur spends some of his days at the center, and Duke accompanies him. Arthur has been having some health issues and as Madison treats him, they begin to spend some time together.

Arthur may be Duke’s person, but Abbie is a close second. Madison is a traveling nurse and Abbie is clearly lonely. While Arthur and Duke are perfect for Abbie, Madison worries about when they will have to move again. So, quite naturally, Madison is concerned about Abbie getting too close to them.

I felt for each of the characters. Madison as a single hardworking mom, making the best decisions she could for both her and Abbie. Abbie as a struggling teen who nearly broke my heart. One special thing about Abbie is her gifts, including her love of music and flowers. Arthur, a septuagenarian who recently lost his wife of many years. And Duke, who in this story has his own point of view.

The story is relayed in both Duke’s and Madison’s point of view. The messages of love and family are explored in this wonderful book. I so hoped that Madison and Abbie could remain in Millbury and that there could be a forever kind of love for all of them.

I mentioned in my review of Casey Wilson’s previous book, A Dog’s Hope, that I am not a dog person. Well, just as that book utterly captivated me and brought me to tears, this book, A Dog’s Chance, had much the same affect. Both books are conversely heartbreaking and uplifting reads that thoroughly engrossed me.

Many thanks to both Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

“If humans used all the time they wasted worrying and, instead, enjoyed what was right in front of them, they’d be much happier. They’re far more capable than they think. Dogs never worry and that’s why we’re always ready to play and have fun.”

A Dog’s Chance is the second novel by American author, Casey Wilson. The four-month-old golden retriever has been dumped at a gas station in Millbury, Oregon. He is the runt of his litter, but his mother has taught him well and he quickly finds the one person in the town who needs him as much as he needs them. Recently widowed, Arthur Patterson tells the pup it’s just for one night, but soon he has named Duke, seen the vet and bought pet supplies.

With her teenaged daughter, Abbie, Madison West arrives in Millbury to take up the position of nurse practitioner at the new Millbury Life Centre. Arthur and Duke are checking the place out for suitability as a weekly card game venue when Duke enthusiastically connects with Madison, who is clearly better at obedience training than Arthur.

Young Abbie has difficulty making friends, resorting to pacing or obsessive behaviour whenever she is anxious. When she encounters Duke, his calming influence is nothing short of amazing. While Madison is reluctant to get to close to anyone, this foursome seems like a match made in heaven. Could she stop running and finally settle down?

While this is quite a nice story, it is a little repetitive and quite predictable. As the victim of a gaslighting con-man, Madison’s reasoning is likely deranged, but it seems incredible that it takes her two years to realise that Abbie’s anxiety issues clearly stem from the fact that she uproots her daughter every few months in an effort to remain under the radar. Duke is definitely a wonderful dog, although his very insightful narrative is more that of a dog-shaped furry human than a canine. Feel-good fiction for dog-lovers.

After reading Casey Wilson's first book called "A Dog's Hope" I was thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to read "A Dog's Chance". Ms. Wilson writes the best novels with dogs as her main characters. I've always been a dog lover and reading books that feature dogs is just the best for me! This book is no exception.....a best!

It's not always the person who finds the dog but the dog who finds and chooses its person. There is a connection between them that's just meant to be. Duke is that kind of a dog. He is an abandoned "dump dog" puppy and he longs to be in a family. Because of destiny or fate, he happens upon a very sad elderly man, Arthur, and he just knows he can comfort him. This is his person! There is an instant bond between them and that's where the story of Duke grabs my heart and takes me on his journey. Dogs bring such joy into the lives of the people they choose and Duke is there for Arthur.

Madison is a traveling nurse practioner and a single mom of a 14 year old daughter, Abbie, who's struggling with anxiety. Madison's next assignment brings them to the town of Millbury. This place just seems to be where they belong but there's a reason they can't get complacent and settle down. Madison just can't become attached to anyone or anything. It's not worth the risk. But....who can resist Duke? He's such a lovable and intuitive golden retriever and connects with Abbie. As does Madison connect with Arthur. Now what will she do and how will she ever be able to leave this new family?

I love the way this story is written between the two POVs. One is Duke's and the other is Madison's. Ms. Wilson has created a dialogue with Duke's voice that is so unique, touching and compassionate. She's put into "words" what those soulful eyes and expressions dogs have and what they would say if they could actually talk. Duke is a very wise puppy and he loves through his heart. "Dogs see what's inside, what's underneath, and we have a keen awareness of how humans are feeling and what's churning inside, deep below the surface." Duke is so intune with his people. Throughout the story, Ms. Wilson weaves Duke's instincts and connection to bring the characters together.

This story has so many of the "feels" that make it a great dog-lover story. Duke channels his inner "Lassie" so many times. One point in particular of the story. I loved watching Lassie when I was a little girl and this book reminded me so much of that. The love of a dog for his family. Always faithful to protect and comfort.

Duke had challenges when he was a pup. He was the runt of the litter and overlooked. But his mother encouraged him and told him he was "destined for greatness". He is loyal, devoted and loves unconditionally. "Just because I was different and smaller, didn't mean I wasn't powerful. Stature, breed, looks-all are labels that serve only to limit, but they don't determine our strength. Dogs know what's on the outside isn't important; it's what's deep in your heart that defines you." I love Duke!! He is a GREAT dog!

I am so honored to have read this book. Ms. Wilson's wonderful gift of writing is even more incredible in the way she expresses the inner thoughts of the dog characters she brings to life. I love her dedication to her sweet pup, Izzy. Dogs do heal hearts and bring joy. This book is full of this. Huge thanks to Ms. Wilson for the copy of this wonderful story. I loved the journey with Duke and his family. All opinions and thoughts in this review are my heartfelt own.

Moving, charming, and uplifting!

A Dog’s Chance is an optimistic, engaging novel that takes us into the lives of four main characters. Arthur, a kind-hearted widow whose loneliness is palpable and who spends the better part of his days thinking of his lost wife, Rosie; Madison, a nurse practitioner who would love to settle down but knows she must always keep one step ahead of her past; Abbie, a troubled teenager, struggling with anxiety and a place to fit in; and Duke, a stray golden retriever who is determined to bring together all those around him and ultimately find himself a forever home.

The prose is reflective and sweet. The characters are caring, endearing, and resilient. And the plot is a compelling tale of life, loss, friendship, tension, kindness, self-discovery, generosity, happiness, taking chances, unconditional love, growing old, and the healing power of pets.

Overall, I found A Dog’s Chance to be a heartwarming, emotive, touching novel by Wilson that reminds us that family can be any unit created by love and not limited to those related by blood and that life should always be lived to the fullest.

Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

"Dogs don't care who you are. They only thing we care about is making you happy, easing your burdens, bringing you joy and spending as much time with you as we can."

Casey Wilson's '#ADogsChance will leave pet owners grateful for their animals' love. After reading Wilson's gripping 'A Dog's Hope" I thank #NetGalley" for the opportunity to read her latest novel. While golden puppy Duke is tugging at his owner's leash, Wilson's book did the same for my heartstrings.

At the beginning, all the characters are seeking a chance to be happy. Arthur is struggling with his wife's death. Madison is fleeing from her past while raising a daughter with anxiety issues. Rounding out the cast of colorful characters, is a mischievous and lovable dog desperate to find his forever home. Duke's love and protection provides his family the opportunity to unleash their dreams.

To close, Duke weighs in on his humans:

"As I witness the interactions between Arthur and Madison, it's easy to see they both for what they lost--a family. I know that feeling all too well. There's no reason all of us can't be a family. Arthur's my family now and we have room for Madison and Abbie. That's the beautiful thing about sharing the love in your heart--it doesn't mean you have less of it. Love is the only thing that grows the more you give away."

A beautiful book of a dog’s chance to love and bond with his new family.

Author Casey Wilson wrote this beautiful tale of strangers becoming friends then a family through the strings of the heart. Family was whom the heart chose. Sometimes destiny…or perhaps a puppy would lead us to a second chance at finding all that we had lost.

Madison and Abbie changed town every six months. Until they reached Millbury. And the town and its residents changed her life, especially Arthur and his puppy Duke.

Told in dual POVs, Madison and the puppy Duke, it was brilliantly weaved to show the thin strands of caring between people. The characters were delightful, well developed. The author made the prose so welcoming that reading about them felt delightful.

A golden retriever with great instincts along with easy ways to live life was a joy to read. Humans spent their days worrying about the future when they should be enjoying today. Well said by Duke. Twists and unpleasant characters added a spice.

Duke held a special place in my heart as he could gauge the emotions of his humans and help them. I loved how he helped Abbie with her issues. It warmed my heart to read about this new family, who came together with the love in their hearts.

Overall, small pleasures in a dog’s life were amplified when they echoed in my heart. A wonderful way to begin the day.

Heartwarming-Yes, Emotional-Yes, Sentimental-Yes, Predictable-So What!

A Dog’s Chance, Casey Wilson’s second book in her Second Chance series, is a book most dog lovers will be very happy they read — although it is not, in my opinion, as good as her first book, A Dog’s Hope.

Without going into detail about its plot, I’ll just say A Dog’s Chance is a very poignant, heartwarming, occasionally emotionally upsetting, but ultimately uplifting novel that serves as a strong reminder of the unbelievable bond we form with the dogs in our lives. It will remind you that no matter how broken a person is, the unconditional love of a dog can piece you back together.

Having now finished both books in her Second Chance series, I continue to feel that Casey Wilson deserves a wide reading audience for her writing talents. Not only does she write beautifully and demonstrate a rare ability to tap into a wide array of emotions, she does so in a style that will make readers feel that they are really “in the story” experiencing first-hand what happens in this book. Further, Wilson develops a cast of well-developed characters that most young and older readers will recognize traits in these characters that reminds them of real people in their lives they know or have known. Having heaped all this praise on A Dog’s Chance, I should point out that I think you’ll find that most of the plot elements are pretty predictable and a bit schmaltzy — but I also think you’ll easily be able to overlook these flaws.

Oh I loved this! I absolutely love golden retrievers and the dogs' narrative was just how I can imagine a golden would think.
This story is gentle, sweet and heartwarming, I can imagine it as a Disney film! If you love dogs and enjoy gentle romantic warm and fuzzy feelings, this sweet book is for you.
Written alternately from dog and female protagonists pov, this book was a relaxing read and so warm, I found myself smiling while reading.
The writing is (sorry but its the best word!) sweet and gentle, I would have this book on my bookshelf to reach for any time Im feeling down.
Lovely book! Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC I really enjoyed it.

A dog’s Chance is a sweet story about a Golden Retriever named Duke, who’s been dumped and later on rescued by his new owner Arthur. They’re going to meet Madison and her fourteen year old daughter Abbie, who struggles with different issues like anxiety and become close friends. This story is told from different perspectives.

I am a cat person myself, but a heartwarming book about dogs is something I can't refuse.

The book is divided in chapters from Duke's perspective, Duke is the dog in this story, and Maddie's perspective, a nurse practitioner. It starts with Duke being abandoned at a gas station as a puppy. He follows his nose to the park where he finds a sad Arthur, an elderly gentleman who lost his wife recently. Duke comfort Arthur and from that moment on he has found a new home. When Arthur takes him to the center he sniffs out Maddie and finds that she needs his comforting and support. Arthur needs Maddie's help with his health but is unwilling to ask for it. Duke forces them together and makes sure they both get what they need. Abbie, Maddie's daughter, struggles with anxiety and obsesses about many things, Duke brings her comfort as well. Duke is the glue for this family by choice.

I would have like to read some chapters from Arthur's or Abbie's perspective, as they are very important to the story as well. It is a likable enough book, the part about Maddie's past that comes back is a bit over the top for me, but overall enjoyable enough read.

I LOVED A Dog’s Chance! I have to be honest... Though I kept hearing about this book and how great it was, I had reservations about reading it. I was expecting a cutesie juvenile genre, something I would read along with my eleven year old daughter. Well, the funny thing is, it IS a book I would read with my eleven year old daughter, but it wouldn’t be reluctantly, it would be because I absolutely love it and would love to discuss it with her! Yes, parts of it are told from the dog’s point of view, but it was so deep and insightful, yet with the exact right touch that you would expect coming from a dog. I have never been a dog person, until this past January. We got my daughter a purebred boxer puppy and I love this pup more than I could ever imagine I would. Could that have something to do with why I loved this book so much? Probably. My dad, who lives next door, has a dog who truly is my dad’s best friend, his companion. Though my mom lives there, too, it is the dog that my dad talks to all day long non-stop. It reminds me of how Arthur was with his dog and it tugged at my heart whenever I caught myself picturing my dad in Arthur’s position. I absolutely loved this book and I am absolutely eager to read A Dog’s Hope next!

A story about a dog? Of course that is a must read for me, but on the other hand I know I am going to feel very emotional too.

And yes, the first sentence already broke my heart, but it was mended again very soon. 🙂

People who don’t have a dog might find it hard to believe what dogs can do, but dog lovers have experienced most of those things already and know that it’s genuine. I recognized a lot of those things that were described in my own dog’s behavior. The things you can read in those beautiful brown eyes are incredible.

They can’t talk but they do speak. They can’t take you in their paws, but they do comfort you. They don’t lie or cheat, but always stand by you. They truly are a a-man’s best friend.

A dog is not just an animal. He really is a member of the family and should be treated that way.

I love that the story was also told from Duke’s point of view. Dogs know a lot more than they sometimes get credit for.

This is a beautiful and heartwarming story about a puppy being saved and finding his ‘family’ and returning the favor by protecting and loving them unconditionally. I loved it. 5 stars

Thank you, Casey Wilson and Bookouture

"Love is the only thing that grows the more you give away."

This book is a MUST read! You WILL love each character in this story!
It is a novel of family, friendship, trust, secrets and true tenderness!
You will meet Madison, and her daughter Abbie, Arthur an elderly, retired gentleman, and the main character, Duke.
All are lost and in need of a family.
Duke is a handsome golden retriever pup dumped by his owner and in search of "His best friend forever". Duke's mother once told him that he must and will find that person when it is the right person.
When he finds Arthur in a park, he knows he can be "HIS person" and that Arthur needs him and he needs Arthur. Why is he sad? Duke will help him!
Duke then meets Madison and Abbie when he goes with Arthur to the health center where Madison is a nurse practitioner and immediately realizes that she and her daughter Abbie are in need of some friends.
Duke is happy to assist with that!
Told by both Duke and Madison, you will definitely need some tissues as you see the warmth of Duke and his new friends.
In the words of Duke-- "I think we all met for a reason-- we need each other."
Ten stars from me!

I have mostly have had cats in my life but if I was going to get a dog, I would get a golden retriever and this book certainly cemented that feeling!

A gorgeous story told from the points of view of Duke, the dog (I know, but it works!), Madison, a single mum, and Arthur, a retired judge who has recently lost his wife.

Madison is a mum to Abbie, an anxious teenager who gets fixated on things. She is also a nurse who moves every six months in an effort to escape her past - but what is she trying to escape from, exactly?

Arthur has recently lost his wife and is feeling lost and alone. Into his life comes Duke, a boisterous puppy with a big heart.

Somehow Arthur, Madison, Abbie and Duke become family to each other and the story of how this comes to be and the bumps in the road that go along with any life worth living, is the basis of this story. It is all about love and friendship and it was just what I needed to read right now.

5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

It’s definitely a heartwarming book not just for dog lovers and owners. After I grew up watching Balto, Hachi and Marley and Me this book just made me feel so much things again. I could absolutely relate to the characters, not just because I always had/have a dog but because they really saviors for people. When we get a dog from a shelter or buy we think we save them, but the truth is just like in this book, it works both ways.
This novel was written in different perspectives. I have to say I was sceptic in the beginning reading from a dog’s point of view, but it was an actual good combination from the story’s side. Duke helped a lot to this family and gave so much love and caring that only animals can give to their loved ones.

This is a sweet story about how a golden retriever puppy changes the lives of small-town residents. Madison, a nurse practitioner, and her daughter, Abbie, arrive in Millbury, where Madison assumes the position of nurse practitioner in a small-town senior center. Madison knows her daughter is struggling with hidden issues within and hopes the new job and community will help her adjust to life’s ups and downs better. A chance encounter with a playful lab puppy, Duke, changes everything. Initially, Madison agrees to help the puppy’s owner, a community revered retired judge, Arthur, who has just lost his wife, the love of his life, with basic training of Duke. Soon, however, this turns into much, much more, as the trio get pulled in to a life together by Duke. They begin to bond as a “family” around this puppy, something each needs and is seeking, as the days and weeks pass. Still, it seems as if Madison is holding back on something, though no one can figure out what. Only time will tell if the trio can find answers to and resolve their own questions and issues.

This is a fantastic story for dog lovers everywhere. It also is just a plain, old good-time story for anyone looking for a nice, uplifting, easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I realized, early on, that is no mystery, with clues and red herrings the author (and reader) will wade through along with the chief character, Madison. The story flowed well while holding my attention, despite the fact that there was little anticipation of what was coming next. Sometimes I think we just need a book like this one, to sit back and realize not all of life is filled with deep mysteries and strange happenings. I enjoyed the way the authors all blended together so well, each with his/her own personalities and characteristics. The setting, a small town in the Northwest, fit the story quite well. I especially enjoyed the way the author made Duke the center of the story, showing just how much a dog can help a dysfunctional group come together for the betterment of all. I highly recommend this book. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.

A Dog’s Chance is an utterly delightful read that will have you smiling and crying.

The story is told by a golden retriever called Duke, and Madison, a nurse practitioner who moved to a small American town with her teenage daughter Abbie. Abbie has some severe anxiety issues and I suspect ASD.

Duke finds himself a new home with widower Arthur and the two families’ lives become entwined. Madison becomes involved with the local community but there is a secret looming that means she will have to move on again from a place she finally feels a part of.

It is written with an almost childlike simplicity but with so much wisdom. You will learn a lot from this book.

It is certainly not the sort of book I normally read but it is heartwarming and compassionate and so full of kindness. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author clearly understands dogs and the needs of humans. The positive impact that multi-generations can bring to each other was covered in this lovely read.

I loved how they brought the memory of Aunt Rosie into the story through her recipes.

Casey Wilson has also written A Dog’s Hope about a golden retriever named Buddy.

I read this book because it was gifted to me and I felt obligated. Although the story was ok and could have been developed so much more than it was, the writing was....just so bad. This story at its core could be written in 50 pages or less, but the author chose to repeat so many things over and over and over and over again to get it to 200 pages. Also every movement, thought, and feelings were explained in excruciating detail. Summary: " When I did this....then I did this...because I thought this...etc" I was the most used word in this novel - in both the human and dog narrative. Also this is the most thought invoking dog ever when he can think in such detail. Sorry to all who enjoyed it and to the author for my negative rant. I felt the storyline had potential and could have evolved, but lacked so much in it's telling.

If you love dogs, you must read this book! It’s so heartwarming and packed with heartfelt moments that will have you tearing up. Dogs have a way of knowing just what we need and when we need it and this book beautifully captures that.

Maddie moves to a new town with her daughter, Abbie hoping to leave her troubled and heartbreaking past behind. Maddie meets a lovely old man named Arthur and his new dog, Duke. I loved how the book included his point of view. If you have a dog and have ever wondered what they’re thinking, then you will really enjoy reading from Duke’s perspective. It’s very amusing and also so emotional. This book also has a touch of suspense which I really liked.

Thank you so much Grand Central Pub for the gifted copy.

This looked like such a good book after reading the cover, it didn’t disappoint. It was such a heartwarming story about an abandoned dog, someone who needed a friend and well the two are perfect for each other. Along with friendships, generosity and a person with a big heart to help the people who need it the most. Underneath it all a secret that wasn’t expected and full of fear for the future. After everything these four people are like a family together helping each other when they need it. A really nice read, I sat down and couldn’t stop reading it and read it in an afternoon and evening!!!

If your a dog lover you’ll love this!!! Recommend to everyone who loves furry little buddies or has a fur baby. I’m looking forward to reading A dogs hope soon.

An absolutely gorgeous story, told through the eyes of Duke, a Golden Retriever, and Madison (Maddie), a nurse practitioner. Maddie is hiding from a difficult past and finds it hard to trust people. She and her daughter, Abigail (Abbie), make friends with Duke and his human, Arthur, a retired judge with health issues. They learn to help each other and the townspeople. Set in Oregon the reader enjoys the descriptions of the countryside, particularly the autumn colours. This heartwarming tale reinforces the unshakable bonds between people and dogs. Very highly recommended.

A Dog,s Chance

I loved this story, I have always had pets, always been happier with my cat or my dog next to me. I had a big loss too and my little dog slept on my bed and spent every waking hour close by my side for years while I nursed my partner with his illness. Wh3n he passed she still kept me company until it was her time to go. The story explains all the sadness, anxiety and emotional help a pet can give us to heal. Everyone should grow up with a pet, they are the very best companions. I heartily recommend this book. Be prepared to shed a few tears.

This is a sweet story. If you are a dog lover and believe they pick people to become attached to, this book will confirm that belief. It’s got happiness, sadness, good and evil. The story even has a sweet love story. I’m not going to give any spoilers because I believe it is best to let the story unfold. It would be a good beach read and totally appropriate for a young teen. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy for my honest review.
