Ryker Ranch #2

Bucked Off

Rate this book
When a reality show comes knocking, you take their offer. That’s exactly what we did, and now our cattle ranch has become a dude ranch. But the producers want more from me than to teach these city slickers how to saddle up. They want me to play the part of Romeo in an on-screen romance. Until I tell them I’m engaged.

Too bad that’s a bold-faced lie.

Now I have to find a willing participant in my charade for the next twelve weeks and my friend has the perfect solution. She’s gorgeous, smart, and sexy as sin—and she’s agreed to fake our engagement, for a price.

If making it look real is as fun as I think it’ll be, I’m in trouble. Because this woman might be the one who tames my wild side.

And so 2023 begins, with a goal of adding every book I read here for the world to see, even if the title is as embarrassing as « Bucked Off ».

This is probably my least favourite book in this series that I’ve read, but overall these are a success if what you’re looking for is a ranch-meets-reality tv romance. However, if that IS what you’re looking for, I might also suggest some therapy. Don’t worry, I’m right there with you.

4 Stars Sugar

Awww....I am truly a little smitten kitten with these Ryker Cowboys. This is the second on the series based on Ryker Ranch and the family who live there. Buck (Carlton) Ryker is Clint's younger brother Saddle Up and he has managed to extricate himself from the clutches of the producers of the 'Saddle Up' reality series which is being filmed there who wanted him to be the romantic interest of a contestant. In order to get out of that, Buck told them he was already spoken for - trouble was that that meant he had to find a fake fiancee - quick.

When Buck was 17 he had his first kiss with a pretty redhead called Penny who was staying at the ranch for the Summer. She had long had a crush on him and he was her first kiss too. But Penny heard something that sent her running the very next day and she had never forgiven Buck. Fast forward 10 years and Penny is still holding a grudge but she needs a job and money and Buck just made her an offer she couldn't afford to refuse.

There is a lot of push and pull on Penny's side in particular. Buck is falling for her from the start and if anything, Buck is the softer one of them. He is funny, handsome , mischievous , loyal and actually kind of sweet. He loves his family and he would love Penny given half a chance. It took me a while to warm up to her but she did grow on me.

I mainly listened to this novel on audible and the narration by Aaron Shedlock and Stella Hunter was fab. Dear Lord , I could listen to Aaron saying 'Sugar' all night long.....

I love the Ryker family and I can't wait for the next book.

HEA? Yes
Cheating? No

I really enjoyed this book. Buck chose the lesser of two evils and it worked out for both him and Penny. Penny really is a cool chick and I like that they both insecure but they found their way to each other.
Omg her dog cracked me up.
I really like the dynamic of the whole family and even though they’re in this reality show we don’t really get a lot of that which is kind of nice because I was really thinking that was gonna be overly excessive nothing I was interested in. So I’m glad that it’s more focussed around the family.

I’m enjoying the narration I will say I wish female narrator gave a little bit of discussion between the female characters because Penny sounds exactly like mama, Ever and Sara.

Second chance romances are the sweetest kind. When a teenage kiss turns into a dream come true, you feel like a queen in the saddle.

Kim has you swooning all over Buck Ryker. While his brother owns the Ryker Ranch, Buck works it. When the executives want a romance to happen between Buck and one of the contestants, it is a hard no for him. Do what does he do, lies and says he's already engaged. Problem is that he doesn't even have a girlfriend. In walks Penny, his first kiss and the girl he's always liked. Can he convince her to play the part and get job out of it? Will Buck be able to keep it fake for the cameras or does his heart take over?

Penny had her dream come true as a teenager, a kiss from Buck Ryker. The heartbreak happened right after that when she found out he did it on a dare. Well years later, Penny meets Buck again but this time he has a proposition for her. He wants her to be his fake fiancé, work as the ranches massage therapist and get paid a large sum of money. Penny needs the money and a place to live so she says yes. Penny thinks she can keep her feelings in check living with Buck and working on the ranch. Well the sexyal tension is so strong that something or someone is going to break. What will Penny do when the lines get blurred? Wil she stay for the job or leave? Will she survive her heart breaking again?

Bucked Off is the second book in the series and Kin does it again with an outstanding storyline. There is hate, jealously, lust and love all rolled into one terrific book. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series.

Yes, I’m giving this book 5 stars. I LOVED IT. I’ve spent a lot of time with Kim Lorraine’s cowboys, and this one is my favorite. Bucked Off is a fake dating/fiancé romance (my favorite trope), and it is GOOD! Penny is a lovable, down to earth, relatable heroine. Buck is a rugged, attentive, and swoon worthy cowboy. These two have been secretly pining after each other for YEARS (it all started when they were each other’s first kisses), and watching them fumble around each other, barely able to contain their feelings, was a BLAST.

Penny is also a romance reader, and at one point, she makes Buck read one of the steamy ones out loud. 😈

Anyway, save a horse, ride a cowboy I guess.

Fake fiancé trope, a sexy as sin cowboy, and Kim Loraine’s writing? Yes, please! In fact, I’ll take two. Bucked Off was all things swoony and deliciously steamy. Buck and Penny’s story was so much fun, perfect book to curl up with and leave me smiling.

Full disclosure: it took me some times to warm up to Penny. The girl is all kinds of fiesty and stubborn and at times I found her a tad whiny, but ultimately, she won me over. And Buck, what can I say? He is all things yummy, smexy cowboy. The man had me at “Sugar!” Swoony doesn’t even begin to cover it! Together these two sizzled more than a plate Chili’s fajitas! Another great read from Kim Loraine!!

There are many positives to having a reality show filed on Buck’s family ranch, but he is now about to experience once of the negatives when they want him to be part of the show. His attempt to get himself out of this situation backfires as he now needs to produce the fiancé he said he had.

Penny had no choice but to leave the hostile work situation that she was part of but that doesn’t help her financial situation. She and Buck have a past so when he suggests that she would be the perfect choice she is torn between protecting her heart and losing her home.

Buck is the perfect combination of sweet and sexy which matches up well against Penny’s sassy and fiery personality.

Great follow-up to Saddle Up. I enjoyed Buck and Penny's story. I liked that Buck was just a regular cowboy even though he had been a Rodeo champion in the past.

He liked Penny from the beginning and she him. They had a few hurdles to get over but in the end they found their way to an HEA.

The heat level was 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Thybhad the best foreplay, IMO. Definitely recommend for fans of hot fowboys and the women who love them.

In Bucked off we get to meet Buck Ryker and Penny Callahan. They met as teenagers, who had a crush on each other, which ended in heartbreak. They meet again years later when Buck tries to get out of being propositioned as a love interest in the current Reality show “Saddled up” by telling everyone he is engaged. He runs into Penny and asks her to be his fake fiancé. Penny who currently finds herself jobless reluctantly agrees to play along as with the money she would get from this agreement she could afford to finally get her dream home.

I LOVE Penny, she is a feisty one and does not make it easy for Buck to get back in her good graces. Although, after everything, they can´t ignore the sizzling attraction that’s building, and all that sexual tension makes for great foreplay as when they finally give in its fire! Also, their quirky fun, back and forth teasing makes this so entertaining. Listening to them fall in love again made my heart happy and swoon.

I cannot get enough of these Ryker´s they have my heart jump with happiness every time. Again, Kim wrote the perfect romance. There are moments that make you swoon, make your heart flutter, make you emotional and feel the chemistry between the characters.

Once more Aaron Shedlock and Stella Hunter give you all the emotions and make you fall in love with yet another couple. Loved that this was Duet Narration!

“Bucked Off” is book two in Kim Loraine’s Ryker Ranch series. Although the books in this series are stand-alones, the main storyline follows on through each book. To get the whole reason behind having the reality Tv show at the ranch, book one ‘Saddle Up’ needs to be read, it is also how Clint and Ever came to be. This book follows Buck Ryker and Penny Callahan.

Ok firstly I want to say I love Kim’s work, she is a brilliant contemporary and excellent paranormal writer, secondly who doesn’t love a good cowboy story, and lastly I love a good fake relationship to a real one.
I loved Buck, he was sexy, romantic, caring, sensitive, vulnerable, and all male. I felt that his character didn’t get to explore his full potential, I think we only got to see a glimpse into who Buck really is. The way he cared for his family and Penny was so beautiful, I actually felt jealous. I also felt that Penny didn’t seem like the right fit for him, although she did grow on me a bit. Penny just seemed to rub me the wrong way, I felt that she was too easily ticked off, she was a little b*tchy towards Buck. I know that both of them would keep their feelings close to their chest as they were afraid of being hurt, but Buck would give a few clues and comments about his feelings and Penny would dismiss them. Plus Penny was always so quick to jump to conclusions without talking to Buck about it, she would just assume she knew what they were talking about when she would overhear things and then run away. But in the end it all worked out.

When the Production company wants Buck to pretend to have a relationship with a contestant from the Reality Tv Show about to be filed on his Ranch. Buck thinks he needs to make himself unavailable just like his brother Clint, so he tells them he is engaged and unable to do it. But when they decide it’s best that they film a relationship instead, Buck must find himself a fake fiancé that is willing to live with him on the Ranch and pretend to be is Fiancé for three months.
After being pushed one to many times by her boss Penny quits her job, now jobless and potential being homeless, Penny needs to find a new job fast. When she runs into Buck her childhood crush, they make an agreement to help each other out. Penny will pretend to be Buck’s fake fiancé in exchange for somewhere to live and a job as a masseuse in the Ranch’s spa. But being in a fake relationship sometimes real feelings can get mixed up into it.

When middle brother Buck Ryker learns that producers of the reality show being filmed on his family's ranch plan to script a "romance" between him and one of the show's contestants, he's determined to avoid it by any means necessary. His younger brother Tristan suggests that Buck find a fake fiancee to take himself off the market. At first, Buck doesn't take the idea seriously, but when he runs into his teenage crush Penny Callahan, now a recently unemployed massage therapist, he quickly realizes that a fake relationship would be beneficial for them both. In exchange for acting as his fiancee for three months, Buck offers Penny a place to live, a job in the new Ryker Ranch spa, and a share of his earnings from the reality show, which Penny plans to use to buy her dream house and start her own business after their "relationship" ends. Living together proves to be more of a challenge than either of them expected when their long-simmering chemistry finally ignites. Will they really be able to walk away when their agreement comes to an end?

I loved Buck and Penny as a couple and thought that their relationship development was perfectly paced. As much as they tried to tell themselves they were only friends with benefits, it was obvious that they had a deeper connection from the start. Their banter was a ton of fun, and I also enjoyed how sweetly Buck cared for Penny after she was thrown from her horse and injured. He even read her romance novels and seemed to enjoy them - be still, my heart!

Overall, I enjoyed "Bucked Off" even more than the first book of the Ryker Ranch series and highly recommend it for all contemporary romance fans. I look forward to finding out what happens in the next book.

There are some authors I will give up sleep for, and Kim Loraine is one. No matter the romance sub-genre, she captivates me and keeps me enthralled. While I love her paranormal, I tend to drift towards the contemporary and this cowboy series could not get any better. The Rykers are incredible. This one features the second brother, Buck. He is approached to have a budding romance on their new reality tv show, but has no interest in being the center of attention. He decides to get himself a fake fiance to take the heat off, but another kind of heat is beginning to build. Penny has always been attracted to Buck. Hurt as a teenager, she isn't sure this idea of his will work, but she needs the money. Will these two be able to fool the cameras? Sexy, flirty, funny, this book has it all. Buck is impossible not to fall for. Swoony, thoughtful and good looking, it's too hard not to love him. Penny is feisty and determined, yet her heart is saying something else. I loved it! The history, the show, the couple, the family interaction, the friends they make, and the way Buck says Sugar. And then we get cousin Travis, the hot fire fighter that I just have to wonder if we will get more for him later (do I sense a spinoff for a Golden Beach revival?)! I love this family, and can't wait for Tristan!

Kim Loraine knows how to cast her characters and this team is phenomenal. Aaron Shedlock brings out that Texas twang, and pulls us in with his seductive drawl. Every time he says Sugar, I was melting! He finds all the facets of Buck and lets us see the heart of this cowboy. Newcomer Stella Hunter is fast moving up on my radar. I am loving her performances. She is fantastic as she delves into the personality of her characters and nails each nuance. Loved this narration!

Another fabulous cowboy romance by this author.
My second book and I'm loving the Ryker boys, their swagger, the way they love their mamma and the whole feel of this family band of brothers series so far.

Buck and Penny's story starts off as a pretend romance for the production company filming on their ranch. The tv series being filmed on the Ryker ranch first starts in the first book in this series and the theme continues even though Penny and Bucks story is completely new and can be read as a stand alone.

Buck needs a woman. Specifically any woman the production company hasn't picked for him, just so the production company can add romance to the series. Bucks won't be told who he has a relationship with and draws the line at that so he spins a line saying that he's already spoken for.

Penny has known Buck most of her life. She hates him, they have history and initially she agrees to Bucks crazy proposition only because she's out if work and needs somewhere to work and live.

What starts off as a pretend romance becomes real and a slow burn romance evolves.

Loved it, the pace, the characters, just everything about it. The Ryker brothers cousin Ryker has also peaked my interest and I was delighted to discover that he also has his own book, even though he's a firefighter and not a cowboy but I still want more.

Currently listenig in audio as part of the box set. I Love a hot swoon worthy cowboy and I can't wait to read the next book.

I fall even more in love with every book Kim Loraine writes!

Bucked Off had me swooning and falling head over heels for a sexy cowboy and his feisty masseuse. This book was sexy, sweet, and full of heart all wrapped up in a beautiful package. This story was a wonderful feel good book that will have you laughing and falling in love this this lovely world Kim Loraine has created.

I loved Penny! She was this feisty woman who was more than capable for standing up for and taking care of herself. But I loved that we also got to see a bit of her vulnerable side too. The fact that she read, loved to horseback ride and more made me fall even more in love with this sassy, sweet heroine.

And Buck...goodness gracious someone pinch me! This man was the epitome of swoon-worthy. With his “You okay, Sugar?”, reading Penny her romance books, taking care of her and his family, loving his animals and more, what’s not fall head-over-heels in love with?!?!?

The chemistry between Buck and Penny was off the charts! Even with the simplest of touches the sparks were flying. Even when they tried to deny their feelings, there was no missing the connection they had. There was so many memorable moments between them that I won’t ever forget. Moments has had me smiling like a loon and loving every minute of it.

This book just proved again why I love Kim Loraine and her incredible stories so much!

*spilerish* Ugh, Penny was seriously hard to relate to for most of the book, tstl-stubborn to boot, and not at all what I was expecting after reading the book's summary. And someone who had worked on both a ranch and a horse farm would hardly be complaining about smelling horse manure when she was supposedly in love with horses, and she was in no way able to consider anything but dreaming of the ranch she wanted to buy when she was homeless and just quit her job, so that was completely stupid for her to get mad at Buck for buying it even if she was supposed to get a big payoff in 3 months, which she then blew up by quitting 2 weeks before it was over because she panic ran to protect her heart. I'll say it again: ugh. That's where I stopped reading. Buck was a great character, and the plot idea was fun, so it's too bad he wasn't given a more deserving love interest. Aggressive, rude, easily offended, chip on the shoulder, etc., is not feisty or sassy, it's just obnoxious and annoying, and honestly I fail to see what he could have possibly liked about her other than that she was a decent massage therapist.

I received a free copy of Bucked Off, but that did not affect my review.

This is book two in the Ryker’s Ranch Series. It can be read as a standalone but to get the full story of why there is a reality tv show on the ranch you really need to read the first book plus book one was a really good story. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the rest of the books in the series. The author is now on my must-read list. This book has an enjoyable storyline and is hot and steamy. It hit me in the feels and kept me turning pages. I honestly didn’t want to put it down to go to bed. I’ll admit I stayed up way later then I should have reading this book.

Buck and Penny have known each other since they were kids. They were each other’s first kiss, but feelings got hurt and Penny has avoided Buck for years. To keep from having to follow a scripted-on screen romance Buck tells producers of the show that he has a fiancé. Now Buck has to find someone to be his fake fiancé. Penny is in need of money and a job, so she agrees to help him out. How hard could it be to fake a romance with someone you can’t stand? They can keep feelings out of it right?

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

“I didn’t realize it (love) also means a future filled with happy days and warm nights and everything in between.” Swoon… Wow could this story get any better. What started as a fake engagement changed along the way. Buck and Penny both entered into this for their own personal reasons. Even though Penny had feelings for Buck, she promised herself they would stay hidden. She didn’t think Buck felt the same way for her and she didn’t want to risk heartbreak. The more time they were together the more those feelings became harder to keep hidden. Buck started to realize his feelings for her were changing and instead of an end date he wanted her permanently. Both had no idea of what the other was feeling. If only they told each other how they felt so much could have been avoided.
Penny and Buck are so perfect together. Watching them grow closer as time goes on but always thinking, could this be real or is it because of the cameras is what will keep you glued to every word. I am enjoying this series with each couple. Each couple has their own unique story that you will fall in love with. An enjoyable read and a story so deserving of 5 stars.

🎧AUDIO REVIEW🎧

Narrated by Stella Hunter & Aaron Shedlock

I really love these Ryker men! Penny and Buck were so intriguing! I was having the best time with their "fake" relationship. They knew each other as teens and there was a dare/bet that Buck wouldn't "man up" and kiss one of the girls that were working at the ranch for the summer.... so he takes that opportunity to kiss the girl he had been eyeing the whole time. Well, when she later finds out that it was a bet, she freaks and leaves..... then many years later, Buck needs a fake fiancé so that the network for the reality show for the ranch won't harass him to get with one of the contestants. So he asks Penny. And that is when all the fun begins because they have to live together since there will be camera crews.... and they have to act all lovey..... so y'all know feelings are going to find their was back!

I loved this whole story from beginning to end! And the narration was fantastic. Had me glued to my ear buds the whole time!!!

Meine absolute Leseempfehlung!

Kim Loraine writes well, which is a big plus for me since I've read way too many self-published books that were badly in need of better proofreading. The reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because I wasn't crazy about Penny. Her personality wasn't explored as well as it could have been. Although she appreciated other people's kindnesses toward her, not once did she go out of her way to help anyone else in the story. Also, I was frustrated with her because it seemed the only reason she didn't like Buck (or told herself she didn't like him) was because of something that had happened 10 years previously, when Buck was only 17. I wanted to say to her, "Seriously? You're still going to hold this against him when he was just a teenager? Get over it already." I did like Buck's personality, but at times felt the story could have been wrapped up a lot sooner if only he or Penny had been honest about their feelings. I like stories where there's a bigger hurdle for the main characters to overcome before they find their HEA.

✅Cowboy romance
✅Second Chance romance
✅Fake fiancé/relationship
✅Slow burn
✅Part of interconnected series
✅HEA

My review:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat factor:🔥🔥🔥

When the television executives responsible for filming a reality TV show on the Ryker Ranch approach Buck about having a fake romance with a contestant, it is a HARD NO! In a moment of panic, he tells them he is engaged to be married …the problem is, who will he get to pretend to be engaged to him for the time being?

Buck was Penny’s first kiss and love. But after being hurt, she ran away and has kept her distance ever since. That is, until her life crumbles. Now, with no job or place to stay, when Buck propositions her to be his fake fiancé, it seems almost too good to be true.

This is a slow burn romance. These two constantly spark with sexual energy and once they finally succumb to their feelings ❤️❤️❤️❤️. What’s fake certainly doesn’t seem fake anymore!

Both Buck and Penny are hardheaded and difficult and fight their love for each other, but In the end, the inevitable happened and they both find their HEA! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Faye is in a new town. New home. New school. New everything. But Faye is not like other girls. She can see her friend’s death and she’s determined to stop that from happening. Will she be able to change the future?

I like Faye! I really related to her. Everything is awkward at that age then throw in going to a new town and premonitions! Poor girl. I also liked cocky Alec. He reminded me so much of Alec in Dark Angel played by Jensen Ackles. That’s where I first saw the actor and have been a big fan since. Okay, I may be a huge fan but not in a crazy way, lol. Anyway. Hidden Legacy has action, mystery and magic! The love story is complicated in a good way that I enjoyed. It is a bit predictable but I still really enjoyed reading through to the end. The complicated world the author created is really fascinating. That ending has definitely made me want to read the next book in the series. I need to read The Broken Rivalry. Luckily, it’s next on my list!

With the prospect of being propositioned to be the new “love story line” on the show Saddle Up, Buck needs find a way out. What better way out that to tell everyone that he’s engaged? Only one problem; he’s not. But when his old crush, Penny Callahan, comes back into his life and needs a job, everything changes. They try to keep their “romance” for cameras only until they can’t anymore and the lines between real and fake begin to blur.

Buck Ryker is as hunky as his older brother Clint was, if not more. He’s charming, charismatic, easy going, and down right swoony. Penny Callahan is as feisty as they come. This fake fiancé story is one wild ride.

Where Clint was gritty and growly, Buck has a smooth cowboy twang to him and Aaron Shedlock does that perfectly. Stella gives all the fire that needed when it comes to the feisty Penny. Fantastic performances from both narrators on this duet audio.

It's getting better

I didn't love the first book in this series, but I liked it enough that I was willing to move on to the second. I'm happy I did because I enjoyed this book so much more. Unlike the first book that was bogged down with introducing all off the characters for the series, this book was able to focus on the main two characters of this story and they were great.
Buck was strong yet also sweet. If you're a fan of the show Yellowstone like me, Buck will probably remind you alot of Casey.
Penny was stubborn and independent and I loved her sass. She and Buck had great chemistry.
This series is the first I've read by this author and I really enjoy her writing style. It's fun and has an easy flow.
If you want a light hearted, low angst story with a little bit of spice this is it.

When life kicks you in the teeth, or puts cows in your path, sometimes you have to take a leap of faith. I am not usually a fan of a fake relationship, but really loved how Buck and Penny were faking it for the reality show cameras, but no one else. Their story was salty and sweet, and a real treat narrated by Stella Hunter and Aaron Shedlock. They were so sweet falling in love and I just loved so many moments of this story.

When the reality show producers suggest adding an element of romance to the show and want Buck to be their handsome cowboy, you find a way out of that real fast. He told them he was engaged. The problem: that was a lie. In walks Penny, who needs Buck as much as he needs her. These two have a history, but both will do what they can to make it look real for the cameras so they both win. Seems easy enough, until real feelings get involved.

Buck was so darn sweet and protective of Penny. Their journey to their HEA was filled with sweet and simple steps that make you love them so much as a couple. The book reading scene was priceless! The bump in the road was just right. I loved how Mama sticks her nose into everyone’s business and keeps everyone in line. This is a series I know I’m going to enjoy deep diving and binging the whole thing!
