For openers, I will admit to being absolutely hooked on and wild about this series, and have yet to read anything by Shannon McKenna that I haven't loved, and Heedless: The Hellbound Brotherhood, Book #4, is no exception. It get 5 stars from this reader.
In addition to all the craziness, danger, murder and suspense that's been going on in the small town of Shaw's Crossing, we have Elisa, who's been in town for 4 months, and who is really cagey about her past. Aside from nearly slicing him to bits with a box cutter when they first met, Nate, a good friend of the Trask brothers, who is helping them with security issues, sees Elisa working at the local diner and she immediately piques Nate's interest. But, Elisa is shy, quiet, not looking for a relationship, yet finds herself just as attracted to the tall, handsome hunk as he is to her.
What Nate doesn't know about Elisa is a lot--like the fact that she's been living under an assumed name, changed her appearance as much as possible, and has been on the run, jumping from place to place and hiding from her violent, verbally and physically abusive ex, Gil. As leverage, Gil has captured Elisa's younger brother, Josh, and has been abusing him too in hopes of getting Elisa to come and get him. Gil is a politician, with his eye on one day becoming President, and when Elisa fled, she fled with an encoded flash drive containing videos with enough evidence on it to sink Gil's ambitions forever, and probably land him in prison for a very long time.
Elisa has been really happy in Shaw's Crossing for the past four months, but after another Trask wedding, which she is organizing and helping to cater, she plans to go on the run again, especially when a news film crew starts taking video in the diner, but you know what they say about best laid plans--and Nate isn't about to let her go on the run alone.
I don't know how Shannon McKenna does it, but she never fails to make me fall in love with her heroes, and in this novel, Nate is no exception. He's sexy, sweet, polite, kind, persistent, protective, honest, and did I mention sexy? Ms. McKenna also is a pro at knowing how to set a sex scene on fire, and does she ever do so in this novel!
While Gil is not the continuing villain in this series, the killer who has been repeatedly trying to kill off the Trask brothers in the first three novels does play a marginal role in this novel, in a plot Nate devises off the cuff. That's all I'll tell you about that part of this sexy, suspenseful read, which amazingly manages to pack a whole lot of story, personal interactions, the Trask family, danger, and the romance between Nate and Elisa into just two days. As I stated, I don't know how Ms. McKenna managed it, but manage it she did, in spades. I couldn't put this novel down, and I'm guessing you won't be able to do so either. Now comes the long wait for the next novel, featuring Mace Trask, and I can't wait!
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
