I think Fate/Apocrypha Vol. 1 is not a bad book by itself, but alone it is missing a lot of framework for the story to make sense without prior knowledge. I really like how the story built the characters. The story is really interesting and engaging because of how it foreshadows the story.
I think that if you have seen or read something of the fate series this book is really good but you will have to read more of the books to be able to understand. On a sied notice I like how the story changes perspective between characters constantly.
The story starts off quite quickly with the typical fate plot of a Holy Grail War a war for the Holy Grail which is a magical wish-granting device. The difference this has from any fate storyline is that it's not a free for all its actually a battle between 2 teams of 7 servants each from the original classes: Caster, Assasin, Lancer, Saber, Beserker and Rider, and one extra servant to oversee the war instead of the church called a Ruler Class Servant. The world-building, amazing. The characters perfectly fleshed out. The plot is quite convoluted and to better understand the story the reader must have read/watched some other fate storyline.
It took me forever, but I finally finished this book. This book is a confusing mess, to be honest. It starts really really slowly (the stuff about prana and thaumaturgy or whatever it was early on is really boring, and the introductions are so fast, it's hard to follow), and it is really hard to follow sometimes. It's difficult to determine what version of which Heroic Spirit is featured or talking, and remembering which Magus is which was a difficult task. The only one I can even remember is Mordred's magus, and that's only because a large part of the first half is about him. The characters themselves are also largely forgettable. The author seems to want us to focus on Saber of Red (Mordred), Ruler (Jeanne d'Arc), Rider of Black (Astolfo), and Archer of Red (Atalanta), and that's it. Siegfried once in awhile too, but mostly them. Because they are the only characters given development or time. Everyone else seems to be there just to be there, and serves little importance to the plot. What little plot that makes sense is decent, but there isn't much. If I wasn't cosplaying Jeanne, I wouldn't read the next one, despite the cliffhanger. And yes, it ends with a cliffhanger. It basically ends like a chapter would. I hope that this makes more sense in anime form, because otherwise, the anime is going to be a confusing mess, with a few awesome characters. I like Jeanne, Astolfo, and Mordred, but that is basically it. I think it's the author's writing style that makes this so confusing, so the next one isn't going to be better.
