The idea for writing TEAM came after the 9/11 attacks when search and rescue dogs were used to find victims and possible survivors in the rubble. Why not have a dog help find the hostages and rescue them with his handler. On hikes and walks I would carry a note book and write down ideas for the story. And of course my inspiration and co-worker LT. has been to all my booksignings and also signs the book.
This is the second book I have read about the vagus nerve. For whatever reason, this now seems to have become the new panacea, capable of affecting and resolving just about any body condition. The author talks about his and his wife’s own experience with working with vagus nerve, and I don't want to discredit his personal experience. The book starts off with a lot of science, which can make for dense reading. As a registered nurse, I find the list of ailments that stimulating the vagus nerve is supposed to help hard to believe. The subtitle of this book suggests that he is going to share scientifically proven techniques to directly work with the vagus nerve. I didn't really see that in the book. He does discuss some ancient techniques that activated the vagus nerve (not that they knew what that was), and he mentioned some other activities that would stimulate it (though his description of yoga nidra is wrong). But I don't think much science was brought up with any of this. All in all, I feel like I'm having a hard time putting my finger on precisely what this book is about. It’s kind of all over the map. It is not just about the vagus nerve but also a personal story and manifesto. Oh, and one more thing. I did find one thing the author said in the intro letter before the table of contents to be completely laughable. He cites a specific study, stating that it said that vagal nerve stimulation helps inflammation and illness of the human body. Oh, my gosh! That is so vague. No reputable study would ever come to such a broad conclusion. True scientific studies are super narrowly defined and cannot be extrapolated outward into other concepts that weren’t specifically addressed in the study. If you are interested in learning more about the vagus nerve, there are probably better books out there, although I have to say I haven't really found one.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
