New town. New job. New supernatural power. I reap the dead and there's plenty of work in Eerie Valley. My name is Faith Ghraves and I'm a detective in the small town of Eerie Valley, just outside of Los Angeles, California. A few months ago I started to see the spirits of the recently deceased. On one fateful night, I accidentally touched one and without knowing how sent the spirit to the afterlife.
No one knows my secret because how would I tell them.
Instead, I pretend to be just an average woman with a badge and gun.
There are two cases my partner and I are working. The first is that of a child who's gone missing. The second involves dead strippers. The FBI is also involved. They believe the murders are the work of a twisted serial killer and they want to use me as bait.
That means going undercover. As a stripper. The prospect is terrifying. Even more scary than seeing the dead. But I never was one to back down from a bad situation.
As we uncover more about each case, it becomes apparent nothing in this town is ordinary and the supernatural is everywhere.
I always love it when I stumble upon a new series that I enjoy. That is certainly the case with “Undercover Reaper.” This story is about a cop named Faith who moves Eerie Valley, a small town outside of Los Angeles that is steeped in paranormal activity. Faith’s parents were murdered when she was ten and her biological father is a real piece of work.
Things start to heat up in Eerie when red headed strippers are murdered. There is a serial killer on the loose and the FBI insist on taking over the case. The sexy agent in charge, Lucas Mackey enlists Faith’s help. He wants her to go undercover as a stripper. As demure as Faith is, she wants no parts of this plan but she acquiesces because she wants the killer captured. With the help of her partner, Steve she just might get her wish. One thing for sure. Something had been awakened in Faith that will never be bottled up again.
Faith’s character is fabulous. She is strong, compassionate and flawed. She fights for the underdog and goes beyond the norm to get the job done. Ms. Workman is good at characterization, world building and action. The reason that I didn’t give this book 5 stars is because the authors description of L.A is similar to that of a small town. She makes reference to Faith calling the jewelry store there like there are only a handful. Really? There is the jewelry district and enough jewelry stores to be a city of its own. I just got the feeling she really didn’t know or understand the city. It’s a small thing but it bugged me. Other than this I enjoyed this read and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
There is a category of books aimed at readers from 18-30 called New Adult. The protagonists of these books are in the same age range dealing with issues such living on their own, education, financial independence, etc. Unfortunately, making your protagonist 29 doesn't take away from the fact that the story follows all or most YA tropes and her maturity level is clearly shown to be 19. There are a lot of references about her karate training and successes, yet she almos never uses it in her fights. As far as her relationships, Faith is a little more than a teenager crushing on the hot guys out of town (FBI). There are a few interesting tidbits, but far too much time is spent going on about clothing, the suddenly important conversations in pole class and the sense that an out of town FBI agent taking her out for boutique stripper clothing is somehow wrong. And let's not forget the main character's obsession with vitamin water. The drink is shown to be about to be drunk at almost every page. There are several mysteries, but absolutely nothing seems to be as important or urgent, which include her supernatural abilities, the puzzle about her parents, etc. Overall, a lacklustre read with some stars for some original mix of established tropes, but the pacing and lack of tension between any characters makes it a no-no from me.
I loved this book. I loved the characters, the storyline and FAITH is a total badass. This for me had it all. Mystery, police procedural and a strong female lead! I am diving into book 2.
I absolutely loved this book. It kept my interest at all times and there are so many unanswered questions that need to be addressed in future books. Can't wait for book two!
This was alright. I will say the premise is interesting, and I'm always a fan of weird supernatural things going on with a kick-ass heroine. But, this was missing a lot. It's a first book in a series, and it asked a lot of questions and set up the big story arc I suppose, but felt unsatisfying in how quickly it ended. The story also jumped POV randomly twice. The story is narrated by Faith Ghraves, yes, a reaper named Ghraves, but twice in random places we got a narration from one of the male characters. The first one for Steve seemed very out of place and kind of jarring. The second one for Lucas made more sense since he keeps a lot of answers, even if Faith is too stubborn and childish to pull her head out of her emotions and listen to him. This book can definitely benefit from some editing -I noticed quite a few typos. I am curious about the characters and I might want to read more but it won't be high on my wishlist.
I really enjoyed the story, don't get me wrong, and I really wanted to give it more stars. I really wish it had been better edited. I've sadly gotten used to misused words (discrete instead of discreet, reins instead of reigns, etc). But what REALLY takes.me out of the story is switching perspective. I don't mean different chapters from different characters' point of view - I like that device! This book is told in the first person, regardless of which person is telling the story. Then, suddenly, it slips into 3rd person:
"I got to work and poured myself into the white angel outfit. A knock on the door nearly sent her into a tailspin."
That should be "sent ME into a tailspin".!!!
If it happened once, I could overlook it, but there had to be at least 8 or 10 instances.
Like I said, I really liked the story and the characters. I might take a chance on book 2, but I don't like being irritated when I'm reading. Hopefully, Twice Reaped is better edited.
This book needs a lot of editing. There are typos and misspellings aplenty. Yet the biggest issue seems to be first person narration versus third. Paragraphs start in first person, then randomly change to third person. It is extremely jarring and confusing because the pronouns often don't indicate who is the one thinking or speaking. Thr plot was okay. It had an interesting spin on the supernatural, but it didn't quite give you enough information to satisfy. The characters were a bit flat. I didn't really understand some of the connections between people. Sometimes the main character formed a bond with someone instantly, other times she struggled, but there was no real evidence as to why. The dialogue was quite rough as well, with all of rhe characters coming off as abrasive, rude, and judgmental. I would recommend skipping this one. The author has potential but needs some fine tuning.
This story NEVER Stops. It immediately turns into another side tale and another, wrapped with the main theme circling around and underneath the side stories! You follow on and on, actually never wanting to put the book down and when you get to the end... ( I already have the next book) But need to rest a bit. Almost reluctant to jump back in knowing the intensity of the theme continues. It is a definite paranormal. Ok if you don't appreciate that experience you are forewarned. The thing is, you forget about that part and the story I was actually surprised when paranormal parts showed themselves. It is Very contagious... You just have to turn the page!
A fantastic paranormal story. Faith Ghraves is a detective in Eerie Valley. She's recently developed the ability to send spirits on their way to the afterlife. A serial killer has made his way into her community to kill strippers. Faith allowed herself to be railroaded into the undercover assignment as one. That's the only part that didn't seem to fit. Nonetheless, it's a great story. I look forward to what comes next.
Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Page-turner. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
I received a review copy of this book from a third party. This is my honest review.
One of the best fantasy books I’ve ever read, and at age 68, I’ve read a lot. My favorite books are ones where a sweet, young woman has, or develops special powers that she uses for good, even though it’s scary, confusing, and hard. The plot is fascinating, and the characters come to life. Even though it’s a fantasy, the author makes the situations feel true. There aren’t any holes in the story, whether it’s about the supernatural or police procedure. The author certainly did research. The book had me smiling and actually crying at one point. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.
I feel like I have not learned anything, this book left me with just to many questions that I struggled to enjoy.I like the angel, this is the second series from this author I have read and why do she keep writing there was a girl and a Angel but the girl don't trust the angel and choices the bad choice bad guy when it's a soul connection with the angel.question of she has his blood do that make him blood related now like father of sire?
Faith is an undercover cop on the search for a serial killer. However the real story is that no one is whom they appear to be. Faith isn't human and her partner has secrets of his own. It is a whole under world of supernatural who have experimented on to discover their secrets. By the time we start getting answers the book ends. It is a fun read but you wish the world building wasn't left so late.
Started not bad and was building up. Towards 2/3 everything was rushed, all the plots suddenly solved and it just felt unnatural. It's like the author had an allotment of so and so pages, realized in the middle of the plot that she had to finish the book and just solved everything and called it a day.
I just don't know ... For the most part, I enjoyed this book. It was well paced and easy to stay active in the story. The problems came with the twists. Each twist in the story felt like an abrupt departure from the storyline with little to no build up to support the new direction. It also seemed like the last few scenes could have been written better with a more authentic resolution.
I didn’t particularly enjoy this book. The characters felt too wooden and unrealistic, and I’m not sure what was going on with the two random chapters, each from a different character’s viewpoint. I get character switching throughout a story (although I don’t necessarily like it), but if you’re going to use that as a device, like, commit to it!
This was a good introduction to a series. The was a lot of action, some supernatural creatures and interesting characters. It will be interesting to see what all Lucas ends up being in future books, ie the abilities. Hopefully the cat also survived. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.
WOW! This was the first good book I have read in a long time. Don't get me wrong, I read everyday and I enjoy most of the books I read but this one had several twists and cliff hangers, I can't wait for the next one. Some parts were kind of gruesome and characters got mixed up in my head but overall it was a really powerful read.
I have to say I was on the fence about getting this book. I am so glad I did. You definitely had me guessing about everyone. And I am questioning every character as well. I’m off to buy book 2.
Urban fantasy at its best. Reapers are almost never included, so this was very well done! I loved this book and the Mc, it could be a little deeper in detail of feelings and such but overall great. Oh, beware of the cliffhanger though....
Like how the story is beginning, l am interested in how it will turn out.. Faith an angel a mystery love.. plenty to keep me going. Great for young adults and me lol..
This was so good, I just want to dive in to the next book!!! I really like Faith and how she's handling everything as it unravels around her. And as the story reveals itself - It's really good!!
