Scrapbooks of memories, tragic history, and town council elections are a deadly combination…

The final hurrah of the summer tourist season coincides with Estes Park’s commemoration of the Big Thompson Canyon flood and the results of the contentious town council election. As the warm evening gathering for somber remembrance wraps up with dramatic election announcements, the surprises involve shouts of anger… and murder.

Following a trail of blackmail, Winifred Page discovers a crime with more twists and turns than the Cozy Corgi Bookshop’s mystery room can handle. But as a scrapbook featured in the crafting club illustrates, there is no case Fred and her corgi sidekick, Watson, can’t unravel.

Secrets are revealed and dark history uncovered, thanks to a group of avid scrapbook aficionados. And Fred will need all the dirty chai lattes the Cozy Corgi Bakery can craft if she is to find the threat buried somewhere in the past or living and breathing in one of the charming shops on Elkhorn Avenue…

(This culinary cozy mystery includes a recipe for a breathtaking Peach and Vanilla Bean Pie.)

Mildred Abbott is it book #19 already? The stories are getting better and better, as well as that new peach pie recipe I will try this weekend. I must say, number 19 was a tremendously interesting story, following the actual history of Estes and the flood of ’76.

I was left finishing the last book #18 thinking the next one would be all about the Town Council Election and was truly surprised by where Vengeful Vellum went. This story encompassed so many of the townsfolk and their secrets.

We did get to hear what officers won, yet it did not encompass the entire story. It was just a happening. What did encompass the story was Scrap Booking!

Scrap booking is such a constant is cities and small towns, and with it secrets shared in those rooms by woman is like a confessional never to be shared. The person who breached the walls and blackmailed became the victim and with that Fred, Leo and Watson followed the crumbs along with Susan and Officer Campbell in a harrowing grand finale!!!!

Keep them coming!!!

*Thank Goodness Estes was saved last night from horrible forest fires coming straight for them. It snowed 10/26/20

Vengeful Vellum by Mildred Abbott sees Fred with a doozy of a case to solve.

Will Fred discover the link between blackmail and murder?

Fred and Watson
Fred is still plugging away at solving crimes while enjoying owning the Cozy Corgi bookstore and hanging out with her best friend and boyfriend. She has a lot of things going on for her, and I'm glad to see Fred happy. Watson is still the food-loving dog that he is. He is also a major grump when it comes to certain things, but he's super cute.

I still love Fred and Watson the corgi.

The Mysteries
Fred and the rest of the Estes Park citizens saw the dead body on the screen at the park when they were announcing the candidates for the town council. It was quite a shock for everyone, including the victim's family. Fred and Watson are tasked by someone not to solve the mystery but to figure out who is blackmailing the town council. Are the two connected?

I have to say that this one threw me in a loop as I didn't get who did it, why, or anything.

Five Stars
My rating for Vengeful Vellum by Mildred Abbott is five stars. I love the Cozy Corgi Mysteries and will always recommend this series. Ms. Abbott writes it in a way that allows you to pop into any book and be okay reading that one while going back to read the others later.

Don't forget to check out the recipe for Katie's Peach and Vanilla Bean Pie at the back of the book.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed these reviews of Vengeful Vellum by Mildred Abbott.

Until the next time,

Book 19. Fred ( Winifred) and Watson Fred Corgi are back. In this book Marcus that owns a restaurant that Leo and Fred always go to. He was showing off his scrapbook with all the woman in the Mountain Memories a scrap book craft shop. Beulah Ebony grandma ,Beth Martha, Delores, Meisel were all looking at Marcus scapbook which had mostly every murder victim ,suspect that Fred had a hand in finding out who killed them. Marcus always wanted to take photos of everyone that was involved in murders in his restaurant. Fred was looking at another a scrapbook and it did not have any stickers, cutesy patterns, or juvenile color palette this one's had Art Noveua to Victorian to modern to retro beautiful craftsmanship. It was sure better than Marcus. When Fred found out it was Martha she could not believe it. Then Ebony and Martha and Delores started fighting and all of a sudden Delores slapped Ebony across the face followed by Ebony grandma Belauh. Because of what Ebony the trouble maker accused of Delores of her family dying in a flood in Estes in 1970's. Well at then there was a honor of people who died in the flood they had a memorial service for victims. And. The election results. The ones that won were Procevial Fred Uncle again, Deliah ( a Pink Panther a group) and Carl ( Anna husband) Anna was beside herself that Carl won. She told him he better quit because of Delish being in it. Anna was thinking it was rigged. But then on the screen Ebony laid dead in the Mountain Memories scrapbook shop. So Fred and Leo ( Fred boyfriend ) and Katie ( Fred best friend and business partner that she had a bakery over Fred Cozy Corgi bookshop) all were investigating. Detective Susan and rooky Cobet were letting Fred and Watsot ( Fred Corgi) Love these book they make me laugh and make me think. This book 19 had some truth to it this time with Estes real Flood in the 1970's.

It’s hard to believe that Susan would become one of my favorite characters. I love the relationship with Fred. And, I hope something more develops for Susan after this book. This book made me laugh out loud. And I loved that Katie reached her breaking point with Anna, someone needed to.

My FAVORITE part was Anna finally got put in her place!!😊 She has needed to get taken down a notch from the first book and it finally happened! 😁 Okay so the rest of the story was Great too. There was some craziness going on and a whole LOT of secrets as always but it got intense pretty fast. This is by far one of my favorite series! 😍

Vengeful Vellum is book #19 in the Cozy Corgi Cozy Mystery series by Mildred Abbott. I must say that this is one of my favorite series of books. My favorite character, of course, is that "little man" himself, the star of the show, the mascot in this series, Watson the Corgi. He is not just any old corgi, but he has a multi-faceted personality. He is grumpy and turns his back on you when he doesn't get his way, just like any little child out there that doesn't get his/her way; when his "mama" (Fred) is in danger, or feeling sad, Watson is there to protect or comfort her; when his three other people are in the room (Leo, Ben, and Barry), or anywhere within "sniffing" distance, he is slathering them with doggy kisses and releasing massive amounts of corgi hair all over the place; and when he senses other members of the community in distress (in this book Delores), he is right there to comfort them.

My second favorite character (besides Fred and Leo), is Susan Green, Estes Park's Police Detective. I love the fact that even though she is tall, strong, and foreboding, and looks like she works out every day lifting weights, she still has a guilty pleasure of watching Hallmark Romance and Mystery movies. In this book, she falls in love at first sight with a tall man who is as equally fit as she is, and who can blame her? He is tall, dark, and drop dead gorgeous with a smooth olive complexion that any woman would die for. I could actually see him from Mildred Abbott's description of him. Maybe we will see a whole lot more of Mr. Toscano in future episodes.

This episode is about the murder of one of the minor characters that played a major role in the last few books; a person that nobody in town really likes very much. This person is not a likeable person, and, in my opinion, got what she deserved. I did not feel sorry for the victim or the person that murdered her; however, I did feel sorry for all of the other citizens of Estes Park who were ripped off by that murderer.

As always, book #19 was better that the previous books, and book #20 "Wretched Wool" which will be coming out at Christmas of this year, will most likely be better than book #19.

I gave this book 5 stars, but it deserves many more. Mildred Abbott knows how to weave an excellent mystery and make ALL of her characters, whether human or animal, jump off the page into your living room.

Vengeful Vellum

I REALLY enjoyed this episode!
If you've been reading this series, you are aware that there are some really toxic characters living in Estes Park and inevitably someone dies, sometimes 2 or 3, and that Fred, with the help of Watson (corgi), Leo (fiancé), Katie (baker/best friend/business partner), will put the pieces together to catch the murderer. That's a part of justice, but what happens when the victim is one of the toxic? You read without stopping until you have the answers of course!
I enjoyed having the victim removed from the gene pool! She was so obnoxious everyone in town wanted to kill her. But then, a new character or two is brought to town and they may be worse than the victim!
The plot is complicated, the characters are well fleshed-out, and I'm now waiting for the next episode...so read on !!

Why Are There Only 5 Stars?

A five-star read is an understatement. I have loved every Cozy Corgi Mystery to date, but Vengeful Vellum, for me, stands out spectacularly. I was completely drawn in to the story from the first paragraph. The mental and emotional connection to/with the characters was surprisingly strong. Maybe it was because this story contained so much heartache from years-old tragedies and events. That's something I found very relatable. Ms. Abbott, your plotting was impeccable. So many strings coming from all directions and woven into a perfect pattern. Thank you for your hard and masterful work. Someday I'm going to bake that pie. Definitely. Someday. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I just love this series. Please keep 'em comin'. Percival never fails to crack me up. Glad to see Anna put in her place and that she can actually accept criticism and do something about her bahavior, which is a thing many people can't do. I am even starting to warm to her snarling little dog Winston, if only just a bit. I like to see the developing friendships with Susan Greene and with Deliliah (who wasn't really featured in this book).

A portion of the profits of this book go to fire relief for Estes, so there's a good reason to buy this book, as if you needed more than the fun plots in this series.

While I’m a big fan of this series, it’s been a while since I read the last book. I’d forgotten some of the minor characters from earlier books who are front and center in this one and missed some of the regulars who necessarily take a lesser role in this one. That said, the main characters are still delightful in their quirkiness and their relationships continue to evolve in promising ways. The plots seem to get more sophisticated as the series progresses, which is as it should be. Abbott obviously is maturing as a writer, consequently the mysteries are getting more complicated and the resolutions more satisfying. I’m looking forward to the next one.

It took an usually longer time for me to finish this book as I was getting a little bored. Should have kept going as #19 was packed with the answering of questions about the IRONS family as well as numerous deaths. Obviously everything isn't tied up as Mildred Abbott continues this fun series about Fred, Corgi Watson, family, friends, police department and community members of Estes Park. Just be sure to have a Chai and something sweet nearby to keep up with all of the drinks and desserts that Katie makes for all of the characters of the Cozy Corgi Mysteries!

What a wonderful tale of a current tragedy intertwined with a historical tragedy to really bring to life the town Of Estes and the people who reside there. I have dabbled in scrapbooking and the details of that craft are spot on as well. I love the personality of Watson and Winston. This well crafted story if full of well developed characters and many twists and turns that kept the pages turning until the end. I look forward to many more books in this series. Please Mildred, keep them coming.

Like always this mystery took turns I never was expecting! I love how Fred and Watson have become a staple of Estes Park and the person to go to when you need a problem solved. This story was a joy to read with emotional twists that made me gasp since I don’t anticipate them in a cute, corgi mystery. It really pulled a little at my heartstrings. I’m anxious to read more about new characters introduced and my love for this little town has grown with each and every new book.

Another amazing mystery!❤️. Love the connection and relationships that the people of Estes Park have! Susan and Fred and of course Watson work well together and she has a sense of humor being a detective! Another murder involving Martha who always belittled Dolores and Meisel felt guilty for her part in not letting Delores know about her brother in which Dolores relationship with her family could have turned out different! Can't wait to see the next murder/mystery!

Excellent Story

Weaving a past tragedy in with a modern murder this is my favorite book so far. I would love to visit with Fred and Katie in the Cozy Corgi! There are many people who would want Ebony dead with as many reasons why but how does the Big Thompson Flood figure in to the why. The story really pulled me in.

Never the Same

Fred and Watson continue on their crime solving path. ( Now accompanied by Leo.) This time, there is no doubt that the murderer is someone from Estes Park. That means there could be hurt feelings (or worse). As tension mounts, words are spoken and tempers rise. Will anything ever be the same again?

Keeps getting better

Even though this title has a much more convoluted story than previous titles, it is the best written of them all. If you have not read any of the Corgi books, I suggest you pick up one of the earlier titles and you will probably get hooked like me ... especially if you like corgis and/or pastries.

Boy a lot to keep up with.

Another good corgi mystery. A lot happening and a lot to remember. I wasn’t able to read this book all at once so I had to go back and read again some parts there were so many characters to remember. I live in a small town and everybody knows everybody and everybody’s business. Lots of gossip just like this town in Vengeful Vellum. Enjoyed! Ready for next book. Jo

It was a very interesting story and there were so many suspects to chose from it was so easy to pick the wrong person at first. But if you could wait your way threw all the extra stuff you could come up with the right person. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read any of Mildred books or Joanna Flukes.

History, elections, and murder!

I truly enjoyed this book in the Cozy Corgi Mysteries series! Mysteries involving history is one of my favorite subgenre of the Mystery genre and this story brought that in folds! Naturally Fred figure it out with lots of red herrings to even throw her off her game. I can hardly wait to read book 20!

Corgi best part of this book

Sorry - this book didn't work for me. The characters were chaotic. They should all be committed to the looney bin. Mid way through the book it got better. Detective Greene was a real hoot. Watson was the best out of all of it.
