Scarlett thought she’d left her past behind—but some things you can’t outrun
A year has passed since the curse was broken. Even though Kyona is now Scarlett’s home, she knows she must face the demons she left behind.
But when Scarlett and Jonan set out for Nohl, they don’t realize the danger that awaits them. Unknown forces are at work in Balenol, and Scarlett’s opportunity to reconcile her past quickly becomes a desperate fight to save not only her husband, but her future.
And with every reason to turn her back on the kingdom that has rejected her, she will have to decide whether she is willing to risk everything she’s built to fight for the future of Balenol itself.
Deborah Grace White was more or less born reading. She grew up on a wide range of books, from classic literature to light-hearted romps. Her love of fantasy was inevitable from the time her father read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to her and her siblings when she was four years old.
The love of reading has traveled with her unchanged across multiple continents, and carried her from her own childhood all the way to having children of her own.
But if reading is like looking through a window into a magical and beautiful world, beginning to write her own stories was like discovering she could open that window and climb right out into fantasyland.
Now she gets to live that childhood dream amidst the fun and chaos of life with her husband and their four kids.
Welp. I guess that's it. Honestly I forgot I was going to write down my thoughts, but it was really good. Strange though how this book is 1/4 the size of the other ones.

This fast-paced novella had me on the edge the whole way through! Loved getting to have time in Scarlett’s pov as she works to reconcile her present and past and fight for both. A great, quick, and thrilling read.
From the moment Scarlet and Jonan set foot on Balenol soil, things went from bad to worse. I was caught as much off guard by the events as I imagine Scar and Jo were!
With twists and plots and intrigue and deception, Captive's Return is short but packed with everything that belongs in a fantasy story. Seeing Jo and Scar as a young married couple was so sweet as their love caused each of them to continually attempt to sacrifice themselves for the other.
I am glad for the way the books in this series are being released one after another. This means there is very little time in between for me to forget the events of the previous book by the time the next one has come out. Not that I'm likely to forget - these fast-paced stories are so fascinating they stick with me.
I highly recommend this series and anxiously look forward to Legacy of the Curse, which releases in just a couple more weeks!
Just barely found this author.. Having teenage daughters . I pre read all of their books. Thank you & all authors for writing clean romance type stories. 2 years ago picked up a ya people Novell was appealed to read a section where heroin engaged in detailed sexuality explicit activities
What a perfect novella. Full of adventure, mischief, and romance. Plus, a glimpse to future adventures with Roland and the others. Thanks for the great read.
Contains: kisses and fighting. This is a pretty short book compared to the other two. It shows Scarlet’s return home. I guess the moral of the story is get that royal pardon first before bringing an escaped prisoner and treason committer home.
Scarlett is going back to Balenol with Jonan as official Kylnan ambassadors and to officially introduce him to her aunt, uncle, and cousins. Pretty much everything goes wrong from the moment they step off the ship in an eventful and entertaining series of unfortunate events. Politics, sword/dagger fighting, and family drama are all punctuated by a few romantic moments and some hilarious gallows like humor. Captive’s Return is much shorter than the other two books in the trilogy, but it is no less action packed as old tensions and new realities collide. This would be a fun read for those who liked the first two books, female warriors, clean romance, non gory but still detailed fighting, secret plots, snarky humor, complex family dynamics, stories with young married couples, kingdom-level stakes, great fashion descriptions, and a little bit of magic.
I like how the book tries to get into the realities of slave labor, but honestly the rulers at Nohl are a little too incompetent. A lazy king and a noble family that invites Scarlett and imprisons her husband? And of course that has to be the exact time Scarlett's brother plans a coup, and in thwe whole mess the golden couple saves the day like superheroes because apparently no one in Nohl is worth anything, least of all the royal family. Add to that a bunch of weirdly timed romantic mments between the couple and they're back to saving the day like proper heroes... And of course they know exactly what is going on and how to help, helping the imbecile of a king retain his throne and finally, having interfered in the whole mess, leaving without a resolution because it's none of their business. Not my favorite read...
This novella is told from Scarlett's point of view as she and Jo return to Nohl following the liberation of the Kyonan slaves. Tensions run high as the couple return to her homeland to visit her family and potentially open trade between the two kingdoms and nothing goes according to plan. Scarlett has to fight against being constantly underestimated in her quest to save her husband and her homeland. A quick and satisfying read, this is a wonderful addition to the Kyona saga!
Love Whites books! This series really contained some tough themes. That being said, although I like it, I was not thrilled with this third installment. I felt like the 2nd book had wrapped up the story and this wasn't really necessary.
This is less than a third as long as the other two books, but it still holds its own. I liked knowing Scarlett’s perspective, and it was important to return to her home and family and see the effects produced by all Kyonan slaves returning to Kyona.
I’m also excited for the sequel series, and I have a couple of ideas where it might go…
It was interesting to get inside Scarlett’s head, discovering her feelings related leaving her blood family behind and building a life with her new family. But as soon as they set foot on the pier of Nohl…. Man, poor Jonan can never get a break, can he? This book was a lot shorter than the others. I realized later that it was a novella, as opposed to a full book. But it still built up, exploded, then reconciled very amazingly. Hopefully Jonan and Scarlett can live in peace now. However there’s a second series, which means it’s not going to be so easy for them yet! 😉
