This book kept my attention. I kept waiting for the connection to the title to kick it and was not disappointed although you had to wait for it. The man who is named as the suspected traitor to his country just happens to be a man no other JAFF story has treated in such a manner.

Darcy has been in secret service to the crown during this time of war. When clues lead him to Hertfordshire he travels there to follow those up and to, hopefully, finally, capture "The Four Horsemen". He knows their identity but he (and others) have not been able to provide proof of their guilt and thus cannot arrest them.

The Elizabeth in this story is a bit of a liberated woman. Although her only brother was killed in a riding accident and her father got rid of all their horses, she continues to ride by going out with Charlotte on one of the horses from Sir William Lucas' stable. And thus it is that she is literally "thrown" into the path of Darcy while out riding one morning.

The attraction between this couple is immediate but, as per canon, Darcy is fighting that and now it is due to more than just class differences. He is on a mission and cannot allow distractions. Much less his mission is a dangerous one and Elizabeth is not one to stay home and OUT of danger. She is getting mixed messages from him: one being a near kiss. Then she receives a cold letter telling her that he will be leaving the area and not returning...in other words, "Forget me."

There are other men involved in this mission. Darcy's cousin, Richard, is one. Plus Darcy's valet, an ex-soldier, who has a permanent limp due to a war injury is another. Then there is the ex-soldier whose family died of small pox while he was on the continent. He keeps as busy as possible to avoid the haunting memories of that loss.

Horses, horse racing, bets, loans and debts play a part as to motives and plans to bring harm to the Regent. Mr. Bennet finally relents from his over protectiveness of his family and takes Elizabeth to London where they are soon unknowingly swept up in the action.

I enjoyed this story. Elizabeth's desires for "freedom" echo a modern women's and that was an interesting side to this story. I recommend this tale. I have enjoyed many of this author's other books

Absolutely adorable. You have to take it for what it is - a lively, light chick lit, using the P&P characters. E&D were great together in this. So much fun!

Mr. Darcy is a British spy. He's been off on missions that have kept him away from Pemberley for the past three years, and he just wants to go home. But he can't turn down Colonel Fitzwilliam, who offers him the chance to finally nail The Four Horsemen. These are British noblemen close to the Prince Regent who have been engaged in various treasonous activities for years. Although Darcy's come close, he's never been able to gather enough proof to have them arrested.

His current investigation sends him to Hertfordshire. Coincidentally, his friend Bingley has just leased an estate there.

In this variation, Elizabeth Bennet is an accomplished horsewoman. She's thoroughly embarrassed that her first encounter with the handsome newcomer occurs when he inadvertently spooks the horse she's riding and she's thrown, landing in a mud puddle.

There's a lot of irony in Darcy needing to cozy up to the locals for his investigation when he's SO uncomfortable in situations like the Meryton assembly. The author injects an interesting twist - Darcy is immediately drawn to Elizabeth but initially fights his attraction because he doesn't want her to distract him from his mission. He's focused on listening to a promising conversation that may offer some clues about his quarry when Bingley interrupts his concentration to nag him about dancing with Elizabeth, causing his exasperated response, which she overhears.

Before long, though, Darcy realizes that she's a valuable source of information. Elizabeth soon becomes suspicious about all his questions regarding her neighbors. Their friendship deepens concurrently while Darcy finds more about The Four Horsemen's new associate in the area.

The ingenious plot mixes mystery and thrills with the Pride and Prejudice romance, leading to a gripping climax at an eventful horse race. Definitely a page-turner!

Looks like this book is the first of a Darcy-and-Elizabeth cloak-and-dagger series. I'm in!

Sir William Lucas, everyone’s favorite “Hail-Fellow, Well-Met” is a traitor to his country!

At least, that is the belief of the War Office where Fitzwilliam Darcy works with his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam to uncover enemies of the state. The Colonel arranges for Bingley to lease Netherfield and for Darcy to visit in Meryton as an investigator.

In this version, Charlotte is the third-born Lucas child, having two older brothers. Sir William displays knowledge of a conspiracy against the Prince Regent. Darcy must gather proof and bring charges.

I enjoyed the mystery and the love story. I wonder if the author intends a series from this premise. I could see Darcy and Elizabeth on a multiple mystery tour.

I recommend this to anyone who enjoys JAFF.

“'Spy’ is such a short ugly word. I prefer ‘espionage.’ Those extra three syllables really say something.” –Howard Tayler, Emperor Pius Dei

Rating: clean: angst level: medium… it was more a mystery than angst, it made you think. There were a few scary moments due to several murder attempts. Trigger warning due to violence that might be a bit squeamish.

This was book 3 in the Mysteries & Matrimony series and it worked well as a standalone. I enjoyed this story as it portrayed Darcy in a different role other than the arrogant rich guy from Derbyshire… although, he was all that… he was also a bit more. I’ve read stories where Darcy’s cousin, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam, worked for the Crown in positions and conditions that would turn my hair white. Wait… my hair is white. In this variation, Richard had recruited Darcy after the death of his father in order to pull him out of his grief. He had been away from Pemberley and his sister for three years.

“He was a secret agent, and still alive thanks to his exact attention to the detail of his profession.” –Ian Fleming, Casino Royale

Currently, they were working on a case that involved the capture of a group called The Four Horsemen. Yeah, everyone had a nom de guerre [code name] and it was hilarious as Richard searched for a fitting name for Darcy. His new assignment… ‘should he chose to accept it’… [you have to know your TV history to appreciate that comment] was to discover their plans, secure their capture, and prosecution. There was one little problem… they had infiltrated the top circles and were ‘friends’ of the Regent. Darcy and Richard were fighting the clock trying to locate the ever-elusive group in time to prevent the completion of their plans. Nope… not gonna tell you.

Word came through channels that Darcy would find needed information in Hertfordshire in a little town called Meryton. Now… how would they get him there without raising suspicion? Never fear, our dear Colonel planted a bug in Bingley’s ear to least Netherfield Park so he could practice being a gentleman landowner before purchasing his own estate. Darcy would, of course, go to Netherfield to help his friend learn how to be an estate master. How cute.

“If quick, I survive.
If not quick, I am lost.
This is ‘death.’” –Sun Tzu

This was cloak and dagger all the way with Elizabeth being front and center for all the action. Note: Lizzy’s OOC behavior was disconcerting at first. I had to get to know this character as she was WAY off her stride from canon. For one, she was an expert horsewoman. What? In most stories, Elizabeth shied away from horses and preferred to walk. In this story, she was a whiz on a horse. She also appeared to be younger than canon in her inquisitive attitude and behavior. She was smart and quick as a whip in her reasoning skills. She would be murder in a game like Clue and other strategy games. Charlotte was right there with her supplying the voice of reason when Elizabeth went off track… or did she? Charlotte would learn all too soon to trust her friend’s intuition. I can’t say anything as it would be a spoiler and I don’t want to do that.

Other changes in the Bennet family made me sad and I tried to not be too harsh on M/M Bennet’s attitude. Man… that hurt. Mr. Bennet was certainly not himself but then I could see why. He was trying and attempting to make it up to his favorite daughter. He was certainly in for a surprise.

Our author reduced our canon list of characters so we didn’t have to deal with them. They were at home in the background [we knew they were there] but, thank goodness, we didn’t have to deal with them. It was a good choice as it would have muddied the water. However, they were replaced with a network of agents, guards, spies, and military men. Wow! Comic relief was in the form of a young man whose life changed dramatically in this story. I loved these guys. I sort of wanted a story for them. I hope our author uses them again.

The HEA at the end was amazing and there was a hint at another couple and I hope that came about. I borrowed this from KU [10-4-20] with no expectations of a review. The views and opinions expressed are my own. I highly recommend this for something completely different.

"...nothing of significance ever happened around Longbourn." (quote from the book)

If Mrs. Bennet only knew that one of her daughters did not need a sister to marry to throw her into the path of eligible men! Elizabeth Bennet did it all on her own with more than six inches of mud to boot! Elizabeth Bennet's life is about to get a lot more interesting.

Mr. Darcy, in the meantime, just wants to return to Pemberley. He has not been home for three years since Colonel Fitzwilliam recruited him to work for the War Office. He is trying to find the proof they require to stop the villainy and treason taking place within England. Now he has another opportunity to bring this evil to an end...he just doesn't expect to find more than he bargained for.

"Cunning and deceit he could handle, but he had never met a foe who used open manners so skillfully as Sir William." (quote from the book)

Sir William a spy? There are many different twists and turns in this adventurous variation. Though Elizabeth still enjoys walking, it is her passion for riding that brings about her first meeting with Mr. Darcy. I found Elizabeth to be a mixture of cleverness and naivety. And Mr. Darcy fights his attraction...poor man never learns.

So saddle up and come along for a wild chase as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy each try to protect the other and thwart the villains.

I'm sure it's been said before, but did Jennifer Joy choose her name because her books are a Joy to read? For those who like mystery and suspense in their romance novels, this one surely was a great joy of a novel, with average editing on top of an excellent plot that keeps the reader's attention and deserves that over-used bit of description, "page-turner."

My review will be technical and won't have a synopsis or a list of subjective reactions.

- Plot: Excellent premise with a few tiny holes that could have been filled, but the reader's so quickly past them that they really don't mind.
- Flow: Quick-paced with a nice balance of dialogue and narrative.
- Point of view: Third person alternating, deep, done quite well.
- The author tends towards showing language with some filter words that take the reader out of the showing mode.
- Dramatic tension is moderate angst throughout, with some sections of high angst near the end.
- Language is solid Regency with few lapses: the non-Regency words/phrases are average at seven, the non-British word count is three. One modern phrase from Mission Impossible stands out.
- Drought is used for draught.
- My personal pet peeve of the non-canon use of the word "hedgerows" appears.
- Some incorrect Regency title use is seen: "Sir Lucas" and "Aunt Matlock." In addition, Colonel Fitzwilliam is referred to as "Rich," a modernism.
- A brother and sister are shown dancing, a Regency error. Dancing was seen as part of courtship, and siblings dancing was consanguinity.
- Excellent descriptions of scenery and costumes adds to the depth of "seeing" this book as well as using all the senses to feel as if one is right in the picture.
- The development of the romance is at exactly the right pace, believable and tied well into the plot.
- The cover is attractive and slightly different. I'd say it's interesting enough to be noticed among the others. It would have been even more perfect if Elizabeth had been on horseback, alluding to the story within.

When I was a young adult, I was an avid reader of thrillers, and now I love Regency romances, particularly Austenesque books. This book put all that together for me and did a splendid job of it. Jennifer Joy is a gifted story teller who I can always recommend as an author. The kind of twists seen in this book that I sort of could predict when it got close to the scene, yet still startled me in a pleasant way, were indicative of a writer who has a wild imagination and isn't afraid to apply unusual situations to her stories. I appreciate all that went into this book and this series--by the way, the books are all stand-alone.

Disclaimer: I'm a JAFF author, and some might say that this review is a conflict of interest. However, I was a reader first, and my reviews are honest and impartial. I write them for the benefit of both the reader and the author.

What If Mr. Darcy Came to Meryton on a Mission?

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation

TIME FRAME: Begins just before Mr. Darcy’s arrival at Netherfield

SYNOPSIS: Recruited by Colonel Fitzwilliam, Mr. Darcy has spent the last three years serving as a gentleman spy assisting a team at the war office. Wishing desperately he can return to the comfort and solace that is Pemberley, Mr. Darcy is denied that pleasure when the opportunity to capture The Four Horsemen once again arises. Mr. Darcy finds himself en route to Hertfordshire, where it is believed The Four Horsemen have a new contact who will assist them with their nefarious plans against The Prince Regent. Mr. Darcy finds this mission even more complicated to accomplish due to a curious and perceptive gentleman’s daughter named Elizabeth Bennet and her uncanny ability to challenge him, enchant him, and wear down his resolve all at the same time…

WHAT I LOVED:

- Mr. Darcy as an Unwilling Spy: Debonair, dangerous, and deceptive – not words you typically use to describe Mr. Darcy! And yet, it works! I enjoyed seeing Mr. Darcy put more effort into his conversations with the inhabitants of Meryton and attempt to uncover information. And I could swoon at all his brave and swift actions to protect and defend!

- Steers Off-Course: With Mr. Darcy employed as a spy and the mysterious actions of The Four Horseman, this story doesn’t have a lot of pride, prejudice, or the familiar antagonists and obstacles we often see in Pride and Prejudice variations. In addition, in this variation a certain family unit is featured in a more prominent role – and there are new original characters and new developments to explore with this family. I enjoyed all that was unique, different, and unexpected with this variation.

- Elizabeth: Elizabeth has two fervent passions in life – horses and traveling! It was interesting and different to see a Lizzy so enamored with horseback riding…especially since most variations portray her as having an intense fear (almost phobia) and dislike for horses. And I can so relate to Lizzy’s desires to travel and experience adventures! I loved and admired this spirited, fearless, and adventure-loving Lizzy! I especially loved the special item (it is so beautifully described, I wish I could see it) that she carries with her and how it reminds her of a place she longs to travel.
Scenes Together: There are several scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth that I loved from this variation – their first encounter, their late-night surveillance run-in, and their ride together. I dare not describe them more specifically, but I will say that these scenes were so sweet, memorable, and beautifully composed.

- Wilson and Oakley: I loved Darcy’s trusty servants/operatives – they were quick-witted, loyal, and observant. I love how the respect they showed each other and how they understood Mr. Darcy’s internal struggles although it remained unspoken.

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- Some Quibbles: SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT! Occasionally there was an incident or action that felt a little implausible, like Darcy focusing primarily on just one member of the family he was investigating even after he already concluded that his involvement in treasonous schemes seems highly improbable. In addition, Elizabeth’s saving the day at the end felt implausible for a couple reasons – including that Mr. Darcy, who was prepared a few days before to live his life without Elizabeth forever (just to keep her safe), would allow her to put herself in such danger.

- Mr. Bennet: Mr. Bennet felt a little inconsistent in this story. Because he is grieving and afraid, he enforces some stricter mandates with his family. Which lead to some tension between Elizabeth and Mr. Bennet. But then later on, he is all of a sudden more carefree – playing matchmaker and ignoring warnings.

CONCLUSION:

Chasing Elizabeth is an exhilarating Pride and Prejudice adventure full of danger, devious crimes, and daring deeds! Jennifer Joy struck a perfect balance of suspense, action, and romance in this story, and I most definitely wouldn’t mind seeing more gentleman spy missions for The Red Campion and his brilliant team!

Darcy as a spy! It’s nice to see a variation that doesn’t always include Lydia and Wickham. I didn’t miss all the usual misunderstandings between ODC either. This story focuses on Darcy trying to solve a mystery and stop a traitorous plot against the Prince Regent, while keeping his career choice from Elizabeth. Darcy fears his secret life will never allow him to find his way back to Pemberley and ever claim his love for Elizabeth. Darcy’s main suspect will surprise you. Is he right? I enjoy this author and recommend this book.

Pretty good story

Darcy is a spy for the good guys and Lizzy helps him out when a bad spy in the area must be stopped.

Lizzy mentions a few times she would LOVE to travel. I can imagine a series where the Darcys go abroad working for the English government.

Elizabeth Bennet has a strong sense of adventure. When Mr Darcy comes to town and asks lots of questions she is suspicious. Whether it is a good idea or not, she tries to figure him out. It turns out her instincts are dead on as he is a special agent!

They fall in love while solving a mystery - him on purpose and her on accident!

The story was a lot of fun as Elizabeth was willing to take chances, but was also reasonable. Mr Bennet adds a unique aspect to this version and Charlotte is a breath of fresh air and reasonableness.

Entertaining, but.....

I have to give kudos to Jennifer Joy for excellent writing. She's a talented storyteller, who knows how to develop a plot, and create characters who you can care about. This book, while well written, left me feeling disappointed. This author usually writes stories that have a reasonable premise, but this one went off of the rails about halfway through. Elizabeth and Darcy meet in the usual way, but Elizabeth is a high energy, almost manic busybody, who has a chronic, insatiable thirst for adventure and mischief, and Darcy is a chronically morose, reluctant spy, in service to the government, trying to capture a group of noblemen known as the Four Horsemen, who are plotting to kill the Prince Regent. His duties take him to Hertfordshire, where he is to observe Sir William Lucas, and discover a possible tie to the evil plot.

This is a very promising premise, and the story rolls along nicely for a while, Darcy being almost immediately smitten with Elizabeth, and Elizabeth being surprisingly insightful and almost guessing Darcy's secret identity as a spy, but Elizabeth is annoyingly nosy and curious, constantly injecting herself into situations where she doesn't belong. Rather than thinking of her as just impertinent and intelligent, I started to perceive her as a pest that refused to listen to anybody. Conversely, Darcy, although he has many wonderfully romantic thoughts about Elizabeth, is kind of a sad sack, one who constantly grouses about how he just wants to finish his job and then go home.

The confusing behavior of Mr Bennett just adds to the almost cartoonish feel of the last half of the book. Because of the death of his son and heir, Mr Bennett starts out as an overbearing and over protective father who severely limits what activities his children are allowed, but ends up practically throwing Elizabeth into extreme danger for the most insane and irresponsible purpose. It really makes no sense, and at that point I gave up on the book being a quality product, and had to accept that this is just another silly tale.

I like this author, but this isn't one of her better efforts.

This story is a unique take on Pride and Prejudice. Darcy is a spy who falls in love with Elizabeth even though it could jeopardize his mission. I enjoyed reading about their adventures, but the book could have used more angst. Jane Austen loves her misunderstandings between the characters, but this love story is more straightforward.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see most beloved characters in a whole new way. If Mrs. Bennet only knew that one of her daughters did not need a sister to marry to throw her into the path of eligible men, Elizabeth Bennet did it all on her own with more than six inches of mud to boot. Elizabeth Bennet's life is about to get a lot more interesting. Mr. Darcy, in the meantime, just wants to return to Pemberley. No matter where I am in my book reading for the year, my 'go to' guilty pleasure will always be some Pride and Prejudice JAFF or book variations. Elizabeth and Darcy will always be in my top list of OTPs and I always enjoy seeing how authors bring different twists and turns to the original story.

Jennifer Joy has many fun and unique P&P variations that allow the reader to see many different types of 'what ifs' for our two main characters while keeping to those parts of their essence that made the reader fall in love with their story in the first place.

I had a lot of fun listening to this book in audibook format. It was fun to see Darcy in the role of a reluctant but dutiful spy, who can't help but be drawn in by a feisty and inquisitive Elizabeth. Of course, their journey is never an easy one but is filled with political intrigue. I often have fun listening to P&P variations when I need to get out of a reading slump or when I need something that is light and fun.

Definitely take a listen to Jennifer Joy's books if you a of Ms. Austen.

Mr. Darcy a spy- a happy thought, indeed! As both a mystery buff and a Jane Austen buff, this book held much promise and I was really excited to read it. The story held my interest with a good and exciting mystery and I expected to be giving it a higher rating. The first two thirds of the book would have received an additional star, but I was disappointed as we started to reach the climax. At this point, I felt the book took an unfortunate turn from exciting to somewhat silly. The plot just starting pushing that line of plausibility further and further in this setting until I was rolling my eyes asking myself why and wishing things would have worked out in a more believable way providing more satisfaction. There's lots to like about this book and even more to like about this author. I have loved several of hers, ("Fitzwilliam Darcy, Traitor" is one of my very favorite P&P variations) and while I enjoyed this book, it wasn't one of my favorite.

This is definitely not your typical regency romance. There is romance of course but it is a mystery.
Intrigue abounds as Darcy works as a spy to protect King and country.

There is angst in the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth but it is nothing like the pride and prejudice going on in Canon. Elizabeth's personality was kind of pushed to the max in making her super inquisitive and bold. She spent a lot of time putting herself into situations where she had no business, endangering herself and others. But she also assists in saving the day and in a surprising manner.

Darcy's role of a spy gave reasonable reasons for his aloof behavior and even the insult to Elizabeth early on. And I liked the reason Lizzy and Jane were forced to stay at Netherfield. Far more interesting than a "trifling cold".

It was an interesting and enjoyable read.

I could not put this book down! The story grabbed my hand and hauled me along with Elizabeth and Darcy as they met, got to know each other, kept secrets from one another, and fell in love. I'm pretty sure I held my breath all the way through the race!

Besides the main storyline, I was happy to see very little of Mrs Bennett, no more than a word or two from Lydia or Miss Bingley, no Mr Collins at all, and both Lady Catherine and Wickham were only mentioned at the end.

I wanted to hug Mr Bennett when he took Lizzy to London, also when he entered the stables so she could see the Lucas's new horse.

The original characters were a lot of fun, especially Jim the stable boy, Darcy's valet Wilson, and George Lucas.

The story was very well written, balancing the love story, the mystery, and humor to produce a fantastic book that I will re-read often. Highly recommend giving the book a try, and then read the rest of Jennifer's books for many more excellent P&P variations.

This adventurous novel has everything I have not seen before in a P&P variation. Spies, assassins, royalty, a Lizzy more brave and much more talented than ever before!! No prideful misunderstandings, no Wickham, no Georgiana, no Lady Catherine! But the story grabs you immediately as Darcy's dilemma is to help Colonel Richard prevent a Royal catastrophe! Then he can extricate himself from his secret identity and go back to Pemberly. Mr Bennet makes a rare important appearance and helps Lizzy find out why Darcy suddenly wrote her the "Dear John" letter that breaks her heart. But not for long:) Charlotte Lucas shows how very savvy and intelligent she is in this story and it was a nice view of who this important character really could have been. Enough so that the Colonel may be smitten:) For a book you won't be able to put down until the early morning hours, I highly recommend!

Mr Darcy can't wait to go home but his cousin has other plans for him. The night of the monthly assembly Mr. Darcy has questions for Elizabeth about the Lucas family. He is visiting with his friend and keeping an eye on the Lucas family. All of a sudden this family has money to spend. Sir William maybe connected to the four horseman and they are traitors to the country. Elizabeth is falling in love but she knows something is going on but is Mr Darcy a spy? Jane is falling in love with Mr Darcy's friend and mother is pushing them both along. It is an exciting time for Elizabeth and is she going to ride in a race? But women don't do that. We'll see what happens next.

ODC with Intrigue

It was the reviews on this book that helped me to decide to read it. After all "too little time, too many books".... I'm so glad I did. It was delightful! Elizabeth's inquisitive mind woven into an intriguing story was very powerful. Right up to the end one never knew what was coming next. Lots of twists and turns to divert the reader. Lots of red herrings as they say. Thank you, Jennifer Joy, for a wonderful book. Well done!

Excellent well-written story.

This is a wonderful story featuring Fitzwilliam Darcy as a spy for the Crown. He encounters Elizabeth Bennet when her horse throws her off into the mud at Darcy's feet. He is intrigued by her but is not in a position to tell her anything about himself or what he is doing in Meryton.

There is much excitement, intrigue and danger as Darcy and Richard try to successfully complete their mission.

Thrilling Adventure!

I loved this story. It was thrilling and intriguing all the way through. Couldn’t put the book down! The story held me captive until the end and it was wonderfully written. I really loved the way Darcy and Elizabeth both had equally sharp clever minds. I enjoyed the inserts of words and phrases from the original book and movies. Highly recommended.

It's always nice when there is a good and known reason behind Darcy's otherwise baffling bad behaviour. While slightly predictable, the story is nonetheless fun. Elizabeth craves adventure and seems to get it. Mr. Bennet pursuing Mr. Darcy is an interesting touch.

I could barely put it down!

I thoroughly enjoyed the merry chase this book took me on! The author did a great job of changing perspectives and twisting parts of the story perfectly! Highly suggest you give it a read.

Too ridiculous for words

It’s difficult to believe anyone gave this a decent review. Forget willing suspension of disbelief, you would need to be on drugs to find the storyline either interesting or plausible.

What a story

I thought I would be bored thinking of espionage and whatever a spy in that time would dwell upon. Not at all. Wonderful story. Great epilogue. There wasn’t such angst as some variations but just a good story. Kept me reading.

A delightful, high-speed romp taking Darcy and Elizabeth on a mission of national importance.

This is the first book I have read by this author but I will definitely visit her catalogue again. The book was well edited and error free and the characters were charming.

So good I read it twice and loved it both times. The mystery is top notch, had me guessing until the end. Elizabeth and Mr Darcy were very so well written and I loved how their relationship came to be. Will probably read again in another couple years.
