M K Farrar had penned more than ten novels of psychological noir and crime fiction. A British author, she lives in the countryside with her three children and a menagerie of rescue pets. When she’s not writing—which isn’t often—she balances out all the murder with baking and binge-watching shows on Netflix.
Erica is still recovering from her previous case after her encounter with The Eye Thief when she receives the call to investigate, a murdered student There is no apparent motive, but is there. There is an obvious suspect, but wait and see. There are so many aspects to a persons character...
This had a tightly woven plot and wonderfully drawn characters, plenty of twists turns and a few red herrings thrown in for good measure, it's a real page turner. Riveting from the very first to the unexpected, explosive ending. I read this in a day, could easily have read in one sitting.
Ms Farrar has somehow managed to exceed the exceptional first book. I strongly recommend you read the first book. As there are several references to the first book in this one.
A college student wakes up in the morning, hung-over and her whole body aches..WHAT did I do last night?! But when she moves the fear intensifies, Her WHOLE bed is Covered in Blood!!!! Outside a Professor finds a young man lying quietly on the campus path..He turns him over to try to help him only to find a blank stare and More Blood! DI Erica Swift is trying to get over the horrible things that occurred with her last case, sometimes she thinks she will never be able to get it all together! Her daughter, the house, her job..Time to answer the call to a body on campus..No time to let her life effect her work!! A story that shows you so many sides of a person, and I bet you will NOT know the killer until that person is found!! A great second story in the 'DI Erica Swift Series', That will keep you reading quickly from start to finish!!
The new DI Erica Swift series is fast-paced, cleverly plotted, and enjoyingly unpredictable.
"The Silent One" is the second book in the "DI Erica Swift" series and it is set on an East London university campus.
When a female freshman student wakes up in a pool of blood after having too much to drink the night before, she is instantly worried and flabbergasted.
And she becomes even more concerned when she discovers that another freshman student was murdered on that same night.
Did this female freshman have anything to do with her fellow student's murder?
From beginning to end, the book was unputdownable.
Throughout the entire book, I continued to be wowed by DI Erica Swift's savvy investigative skills.
Although "The Silent One" could easily be a standalone novel, there are several references to the first book in the series so it's advisable to start the series with "The Eye Thief".
I listened to the audiobook and narrator Emma Gregory did an outstanding job with the narration.
I hope author M.K. Farrar is working on a third installment.
Paige wakes up after a night of drinking to find herself covered in blood, two black eyes and soreness in other parts of her body.
A young man is found brutally murdered on the university campus. He was a freshman, not widely known ... so who would want him dead? One of the professors found the victim and called police.
DI Erica Swift is still recovering from her previous case after her encounter with The Eye Thief when she receives the call to investigate. There is no apparent motive ... but there are several people that Swift feels are hiding something ... but what?
And then another student's body is found .....
With a tightly woven plot and deftly drawn characters, the twists and turns and red herrings, it's a real page turner. Riveting from the very first to the unexpected, explosive ending.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this most compelling crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
The second book in the Erica Swift series is just as gripping as the first.
It begins with a gruesome crime of rape and leads to a far more serious crime being committed. Paige Arland wakes up in a bed full of blood and injuries which she finds confusing. She'd drunk heavily the night before and her mind was too fuzzy to sort out what happened to her.
Enter Erica Swift to try and solve the crime, she has personal issues to deal with after losing her husband in tragic circumstances.
The case is a complex one as it takes place on a university campus, lots of suspects to choose from, even a professor is arrested for the crime.
The second book in the DI Erica Swift series which is just as gripping and action packed as the first. The author has, again, done an excellent job of fleshing out the characters and making me feel like I was actually there with some scenes. When Paige Arland wakes up one day, in a bed full of injuries and blood and cannot remember just what had happened means Erica is on a case for rape, and she begins to investigate. Erica is also attempting to deal with the tragic loss of her husband in the not ao distant past. The case takes some gruesome turns and it starts to look like it's more complex than what she first believed. A fantastically well written book that had me engrossed from the first paragraph as I have already said the characters are excellent and just blend together so well! Looking forward to the next one for sure.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is an excellent second book in this series. Following on from the events that shook the team in the first book, they begin a new investigation of a murder of a student at a London university. Some of this story is difficult to read, but it needs to be in order to portray the effects of the crime on the main characters. Farrar handles these aspects very well and has produced an intense piece of crime suspense.
DI Erica Swift is back in this suspenseful, nail biting read. This is book two of the series and Just when I thought I figured it out, I was wrong. The characters are well developed, the story is captivating and held my attention from the first page until the last. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Having read the first book in this series and absolutely loving it, I couldn’t wait to catch back up with DI Erica Swift to see what was in store for her as well as us readers and pleased to say it didn’t disappoint. As there is a bit of background that does creep into this one, I would recommend reading in order, plus The Eye Thief is a phenomenal read that you won’t want to miss!
This story starts off with a case that looks pretty straight forward in terms of the reader knows more than the police do and everything seems quite clear cut. Or is it? More than a few times I thought I knew exactly where things were going only for the author to throw in a curve ball which had me doubting everything I had previously believed. It was very nicely done and I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough.
The Silent One was another great read and though only the second book in the series, it yet again left me very excited at what else is to come in future books. So far they have been dark and disturbing and everything that I love and could want from a crime thriller. If you love a dark and twisted read that will keep you on your toes, then I highly recommend you adding this author and series to your reading pile.
Having read the first book on the series, I was really looking forward to reading the second instalment. Definitely one of those books that you devour on one sitting - I read it in under 24 hours. My only criticism is the number of mistakes. Can be very distracting and maybe the author should consider a new proofreader!
Really enjoyed this book even though havent read first one in this series. Was easy to follow (tho do want to read 1st book now!)
A Uni student is raped and wakes up covered in blood and unable to remember what happened, she just feels sore. At same time another student is murdered in same area. Was he the rapist? Did the girl Paige kill him?
Its up to DI Swift to put the puzzle together, and solve not just one case but two
The Silent one by M.K. Farrar. This is book 2 of DI Erica Swift series. Brilliant read. I was surprised because I thought it was one person all through the book. I was surprised with who it was. Didn't see that coming. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.
I was going to give it three stars, but the ending turned out better than I expected.
Overall, the book is quite good. I do appreciate an author who can weave the characters' personal lives into the story without having the personal lives take over and completely mess up the overall story line. It's nice to have a main character who is doing just OK financially, and one who has to worry about (for example) child care. Seeing the impact of overtime on the DI Swift's personal life is refreshing.
********** SPOILER ALERT ********** So here's the problem. We start with a murder (unsurprising - it is, after all, a murder mystery). But the detectives become so incredibly focused on Professor Young (he discovered the body) that they pretty much stop looking for any other explanation. Then, after he's cleared and they have another potential suspect (who, based on what they know at that point, is a much more viable suspect), the treat her with kid gloves as though they're looking for some reason it can't be her.
This is book two of the DI Erica Swift series and sees DI Swift having to investigate the murder of student in the first few weeks of university life. Another fresher has also had something so horrendous happen to her that she has blacked it out, only waking up the next morning covered in blood! DI Swift is still learning to cope after her husband’s death under the hands of the Eye Thief, her last big case. Someone at the university must have seen something, but no one is talking. The young man’s death occurred yards from the halls of residence, after a night out in the student union, where he was just on the outskirts of the groups, never part of one.
The young woman is Paige, who has her own reasons to keep quiet. She doesn’t know if all the blood is hers and with her family history, which she has travelled far away from home to escape her family history and the events she and her mother were ostracized for. If her one and only new friend knew about her past, then she would surely dump her and she would be alone again. The young man is not the last body to be found on campus, as someone wants to cover up what was done. Is this a victim, witness, or the killer themselves?
Memories will be triggered by a touch, bringing partial truth to the sick actions of one individual, who killed to keep one person’s attention all to themselves. The rash decisions of youth and the inability to correctly manage relationships, attention or to learn how to treat other human beings! Some with an expectation of wealth and privilege feel they can do what they wish, whilst other poorer students feel driven to hide on the sidelines and keep their family history secret. A tale of two halves, where those who should know better, definitely didn’t. A read with some very graphic scenes of a rape which may trigger issues with some readers, so be warned. The complexity of memory makes the solving of this murder so much more difficult and adds a twist to the tale. Another cracking read from this author. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
This was my first book by this author and as it's the second in the series I had to understand her past with bits and pieces of storyline added here there in between. Not sure if that was the reason the book didn't really have me at the edge of the seat throughout. To an extent the story was predictable and none of the characters were likeable. Each one was annoying and weren't contributing much. The premise was so interesting and I expected the story to be woven equally tight but unfortunately there's rape and no trigger Warning. For a very long part in the story there's no acknowledgement of the effects or any help either for the victim to deal with it or come to terms with it. This was handled so casually that it actually got my goat. I was expecting some trauma response from the victim but once she realizes what happened the story continues with nothing to emphasize that part. Her friend is equally unhelpful and very tiresome along with boys who seem unhinged and lame with nothing good on character traits. The detective is emotionally battling her traumas, missing clues, has no higher ups support and her immediate family feeling unsafe because of her job and the past life risks they were part off. Dad's got dementia and she has to get through that part of added stress. I was plain exhausted reading it and was hoping things just looked up all around. The ending twist I was prepared for and found the murder unnecessary. In all this book is a flip through and I would probably read another book in the series just to see if the detective has spruced up in handling a psycho murder. I just hope so because the author has peppered interesting bits in this book but the storyline doesn't stay consistent.
This book has the IT factor thrillers need. When Paige gets pass out drunk she expects a hangover in the morning NOT to be the center of a crime. At a University there are plenty of suspects, not just Paige. Detective Erica has been swallowed up by grief but work calls when yet another student is found murdered. Eighteen year old students are legally adults but that doesn't mean they act it. Emotions run high with these characters when their lives are all literally on the line whether that is as the next victim or a life in prison. Part of series but can be read alone. Reads quickly because you need to know who the bad guy is. You need to know who isn't talking.
OMW this book had me gripped right from the start, fast paced and full of suspense. After a drunken night out, 18 year old university student Paige Arland wakes up with herself and her bedding covered in blood and she does not remember a thing about what has happened to her. Erica Swift is called to the university when the body of a young student, who was drinking at the same venue as Paige the night before is discovered. What follows are twists and turns and when the killer is finally caught it was not who I expected. I have not read the first book in the Erica Swift series but this reads fine as a stand alone and I will be reading all future books in this wonderful series.
I was caught from the first page, and hardly put my kindle down from the time I started reading this yesterday afternoon. It also highlighted one of the crimes that our young women face when they go to university, and that is rape culture, and the fact that it's swept under the rug by either the young women out of shame, or by friends of either party. Or worse yet, college administration. The plot line was great , the story was fast paced. I had guessed who the murderer was early on, but as things developed I had doubts. But in the end, I was right. I can't wait to read the rest of this fantastic series!!!
A thoroughly encompassing book with the main character, D I Erica Swift, a sole parent to young daughter, Poppy, after her husband had bee killed in the line o f duty. A thoroughly enthralling scenario based in the grounds of a University. It has everything from the mysterious murder of a young student, the molestation of another and a truly puzzling set of circumstances which causes inevitable confusion and misdirection throughout. A not to be missed read.
A most enjoyable well written read. An easy understandable plot, no complexities just intrigue and mystery. A book that keeps you guessing. A definite whodunit. DI Erica Swift is on the hunt for the killer of a university student found dead on the university campus. A drunken brawl gone too far, a revenge killing or maybe premeditated murder? The reasons are not obvious but someone is keeping quiet, and not everyone is being as honest as they should. When one murder becomes two the investigation intensifies. A few twists and turns with a rewarding ending.
When I read the first book in the DI Erica Swift series it left a lasting impression so I had high expectations of this one, book 2 in the series. I wasn’t disappointed. It doesn’t have the shock factor of the first book but it does have the drama, the twists and the edge of the seat tension that keep you glued to the pages till the very end.
The narration was fantastic and this narrator did a great job in the delivering the emotions and turmoil of all the characters.
The story is based around the murder of a male student on the same night a girl is attacked walking home from the student union bar so drunk she doesn't fully remember the events of that evening. An intriguing story told from some interesting perspectives that held my interest throughout. The personalities of the detectives didn't come through as strongly as they could have, but maybe that was because the main focus was on the students? *The book does deal with the issue of rape*
Two weeks into the semester at university, a group go to the student union, drink to much, and put into action events that will forever alter their lives. This is a well-written book. However, the use of f*** is unnecessary. I’m told repeatedly that this is how people talk, but it’s not how we all talk. The writing was good without it, and I could have been tempted to read more of the series. Not now, though.
Good mystery and story line. This was a new author to me so it took a bit to get used to their writing style. Author used some acronyms that weren’t explained but perhaps were familiar to those in England. This was the second of a series and I didn’t read the first one. They referred to things that happened but didn’t give me a detail of what happened so I feel like I missed part of the storyline.
A murder at a university pulls DI Swift in different directions. A young woman recovers her memory only to remember a nightmare. A professor with secrets looks good for the murder but there is something else at play.
This was a decent read. The mystery was good though a little vague. Ending was fast paced as Swift resolves the cases and cones to some peace about her personal situation.
The narrator hits the right tone throughout. Farrar's sympathetic treatment of dementia is heartwarming and heartbreaking at one and the same time. The writing really brings her characters to life and the thriller element is expertly crafted with appropriate changes of pace. An exciting and fulfilling end makes THE SILENT ONE well worth the reader's or listener's time. Recommended.
Although I had previously read this book I went on a binge listen of the series due to the audible sale and listened to them all.
This was not as dark and shocking as the first book but took it a step further and really explored what happens when the shocking impact happened. What I struggled with how did the sister start to become so nice when at the beginning of the first book she wasnt.
This book was hard to break from reading. One mystery became another mystery. Young adults, or college kids sometimes have a cruel sense of imagination. They can also be too selfish to consider the feelings of others. These characterizations were well mixed into the mystery with personal emotions on the side. I believe you will enjoy the read.
Make sure to give this book a read. There are plenty of action and it surely keeps you guessing. The end is the big surprise. I'm delighted I chose this book and I will recommend it to everyone. Please enjoy your read
It’s just not that good and I expected so much more. There were so many procedural holes that were gaping. It was a weak investigation from the beginning. The characters weren’t that strong or interesting; the writing, a bit repetitive. All in all, the story wasn’t engaging and neither were the characters.
