It was a fairly fun read but I felt it was lacking a lot when it came to character interaction. We read that certain characters had crushes on each other but they rarely interacted or gave much impression that they did, for example. I would've liked for there to be less basketball in the last 10 or so volumes as it completely took over.
Hanamichi Sakuragi. Hanamichi Sakuragi, Hanamichi Sakuragi. The name just slips on the tongue!! And the character himself is as easy as fun as his name is to say. This is one of my childhood's biggest hits that I missed out of. Back then I was not truly a fan of sports anime or really anything that resembled reality (fantasy was everything for me). But the name and the iconic cover of the first volume of the manga were ones that stuck with me. Along with the banger of an opening song. So years passed, and I finally decided to give the manga a chance, and I am so glad I did.
This is one of those cases in which the fame is well deserved. It is a simple story about simple characters in a simple setting. A highschool basketball team with a dream of playing in the Japan National Championship. But it works so damn well. They really could be your highschool mates and that I think is the beauty of it: how real and human the characters feel. Yes, of course the exaggeration and overly bravado of anime exists within this series, but it is there only for the comedy and the drama - and I tell you, find me cackling in the train or unable to stop reading at 2am, eyes pasted to the screen of my tablet.
Just a simple, inspiring and classic sports underdog story that did not define the genre, but showed why these are so loved around the world. So I shall keep my review simple. Recommended for anyone, anywhere, whether you are a fan of sports or not.

Won't continue. My library stopped collecting them and I can't be bother finding the rest plus there's better sports manga out there. I will give the other basketball manga by Takehiko Inoue a go though.
