Reading has always been a huge passion, from The Hobbit to Goosebumps. Some of my fondest memories are at the library or being read to, and when I embarked on my journey of becoming an author, I did so with the dream of sharing the worlds in my mind with others.
I currently live in Salt Lake City, UT with my adorable King Charles, Perseus, and work full-time as a special education preschool teacher.
I am a USA Today Bestselling author and was nominated for "Unforgettable Book of the Year" for The Beast Princess and "Mind-Blowing Fantasy of the Year" for The Siren Princess at Penned Con 2020, and as Best Debut Author at UtopiaCon in 2017 for Step Right Up (now Circus of the Stars, Ringmaster).
The Phoenix Princess by Lichelle Slater is the fourth book in her The Forgotten Kingdom series. This book is the author’s Snow White reimagined. In this story, we get the phoenix princess as she fights to overcome the obstacles that she will face as Selina continues her quest to take over the kingdoms and claim the thrones for her own. I had high hopes when I began reading The Phoenix Princess and read that it was Snow White reimagined. I was curious and eager to see how the author would recreate this story with a Snow White twist to blend with the previous stories in this series. I feel that there are several other fairy tale stories blended into this book, and I have to admit that I really enjoyed it. These additions to the story help it be more engaging and interesting with a nice variety of characters. This is Princess Tavia’s story and I have mixed feelings when it comes to her. There are some moments where I like her, and then there are moments where I don’t like her that much. While she does have some haughty moments I do appreciate that she is not a completely spoiled princess. She has her issues with her family – mother is unstable, the father is believed to be dead, but the author has quite a few surprises wrapped up in this book both for Tavia and for readers. Readers are reunited with familiar characters from the previous books as well as they come together to prepare for the big battle that is to come. It’s nice to see the relationships continue to develop between the various characters as well when they are reunited. I enjoyed the backstory of one character that readers are introduced to, even if he does end up being a minor character in this book. The way that things are coming together I’m eager to see what the final book will bring. This book does have some downsides though. It’s supposed to be Snow White reimagined, but I don’t get a lot of Snow White vibes from this book. There are a couple of moments that make me think of Snow White, but the overall tone doesn’t ring of it. I get more…Sleeping Beauty vibes from this book in places with the briars and then the return to the place where time is frozen. I’m a bit disappointed that there are a couple of scenes that are cut super short. I know that the scenes don’t really add to the story, but there was a better way to incorporate the scene without chopping it the way it’s cut which causes the story to feel a bit disjointed. The pacing is a bit off as well. There are really engaging moments that had me page-turning to learn what was going to happen next, and then the story slows down and I had to push to move forward. At the end of the day, I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. This isn’t one of my favorites of this series. I don’t find Tavia to be that engaging of a character and the storyline just doesn’t flow for me which caused me to be slower in reading than I would have liked. This book has an exciting cliffhanger and I’m eager to find out what happens in the final book. I’m hopeful that it will be a real page-turner as I’m sure the truth will come out and the real fight will begin. If you enjoyed the series to this point then feel free to check this book out. Once again, not my fave, but it does have its good moments.
Another great book in the series!! I can’t believe I was still so conflicted with who Tavia’s heart Song was? Like was it seriously possible for twin brothers to be it?? But guess not! Glad it was Ferdinand in the end. The tear jerking moments, the lost time reading each chapter... the 4th book did not disappoint. Well, except that it ended suddenly and I was was confused when I reached the Epilogue. How could you toy with our emotions for Gerard, Lichelle Slater?!?!?! I really thought he was helping the royals but then BAM he was really still the bad guy. AND NOW YOU BRING IN TERN TOVAN BACK FOR THE NEXT BOOK?! Ahhhhh, I can’t wait!!! (By the way, it was really hard for me to put the book down because I was that hooked)

I love this series. The forgotten kingdom series of fairytales retold is full off adventures and twists and turns galore! With a great storyline, old friends and new this action packed read has something for everyone and I am excited to read the next book!
I wasn't a fan of this installment, which is unfortunate, because I really enjoyed the last 2 books. This one however, took a character I liked in passing, and just made her really obnoxious and annoying. tavia's character arc in this was just being distrusting and a jerk, and the story in this one was obviously just so eager to fill in any gaps as far as Gerard's story is concerned. It felt like Tavia's story was just the engine to get more of that plot in, and her journey was really meh for the most part. Ferdinand is a rather bland love interest as well, and there are some things in the book he does to "help" Tavia that just rub me the wrong way. But anytime he does it, Tavia is like "Well, he is just trying to help" and I just was rolling my eyes the entire time when it was those two on their journey.
when the rest of the crew got there in the second half of the book, was when the story picked up. Best boy Gerard has returned, and I can't wait to see his story come to an end in the final book in the series. As far as Tavia's story is concerned however, this is a rather uninspired Snow White retelling that doesn't really share much in common with the fairy tale it's based on. Tavia being a phoenix is cool, and finding out her origins was interesting, but I really feel like this book didn't need to happen, since it just felt like filler before the final story arc in the series begins.
The most interesting part was the epilogue, and that's because it was from Gerard's POV. I'm excited to see the final book, so reading this one to get to it was fine but this as a stand alone is not a great read. The first three books in the series are really good - Beast Princess is hands down my favorite - but this one is the weakest one in the series. Only read if you're invested in the series thus far, because it doesn't add anything to the fairy tale retelling scene. Really just furthers the original narrative in this series, and the MCs are eh with an okish plot. If you like Gerard however, and want to read his backstory, this book is good for that but honestly really disappointed with the Tavia side of things, because I liked her a lot in prior books and I don't think her character was done justice in her stand alone story.
Typically I'm NOT a fan of books that end with a (SPOILER!!!!!!!!) cliffhanger. However this book get 5 stars from me. Lichelle Slater has grown so much as this series has developed. Her plot just pulls me in. Out of all the princesses featured in the series I think Tavia has been the least interesting- probably having to do with her lack of involvement in previous books...which is also part of her story line. However she is a person that while quiet does not mean she has cant' have a complicated and emotional depth of character that will tug at your heart strings and have you cheer as you turn the page. Tavia actually quite grew on me - her strength of character and conviction to take care of her friends and loved ones- she is not a princess that will sit and watch others do her work for her.
I also really enjoyed this book because of Gerard....GERARD! So many plot twists I didn't see coming. I think it is very rare when the author can actually surprise the reader. I was completely taken off guard. I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment!
Having read the first three books in this series, I had very high expectations for this one. I am happy to say that not only were my expectations met, but completely smashed. I really don't understand how Ms Slater manages to consistently write masterpiece after masterpiece without fail. As an aspiring writer myself, I wish for this sort of skill. But going back to the book itself, I don't think I could name a single flaw. It's the kind of book that completely absorbs you from page 1 and keeps you hooked right to the end. Its the kind that takes you away from the real world and it's problems, and gives you the feeling of a book hangover once you finish and come back to reality. I must say that reading this was an immense pleasure, and I cannot recommend it enough. How I will manage to wait until the next book comes out, I don't know, but from my experiences with this series I know it is going to be a real treat!
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I honestly would. Being in the midst of a pandemic, I admit I have really been struggling to read. I love to read, but until this book I'd say I've read about 2 books since February. This book has completely changed that.
After reading the first three books in the series, I already had high expectations for this one, but Lichelle managed to blow them away! In this installment, we follow Tavia. We've been introduced to her before, but we don't know much about her. She's a very interesting character; she can come across as cold, but she puts up that front due to her past traumas. She, along with all of Lichelle's characters, are quite dimensional and feel realistic. They're fully fleshed out, to the point of being quite intricate.
The story itself continues to be a delight, with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it to anyone. Now I have to wait until the next installment!

This is the fourth book in the series of The Forgotten Kingdom series. If you haven't read it, you should definitely consider picking up and starting book 1!
This book was probably my favorite one in the series! I loved the feisty main character, Tavia, and her story. Basically, the book starts with Tavia bring brought through the mirror world and Selina trying to get her heart and Tavia refuses to do it.
Selina isn't happy about that and plans to punish Tavia as much as she can. It's there that the story really takes off and doesn't stop. There were so many minor characters that I liked in this story!
It does have a huge cliff hanger at the end to go into book 5! I can't wait to read the next book!
Cliffhanger 😩 Awesome book, kept me on edge the whole time, wondering if our beloved characters would conquer all the obstacles thrown their way 😳🙈 But, of course, Tavia hold her own, growing so much, by facing and accepting her weaknesses she became the better version of herself 🤗... and a handsome fairie princes had something to do with that too 😉 With an amazing and intense plot, great world building, action-packed and unexpected twists and turns, this magical installment is my favorite book in this series, so far, as there is one more coming and I feel is going to be epic, considering that freaking cliffhanger, can't wait!!! 😍💖
Why do we not have half stars as an option? While this book is not quite the perfect 5 star read for me (minor nuances), it definitely is more than a 4! While the first three books could be read as stand alones, I highly recommend reading them before delving into the magic of The Poenix Princess. Returning characters and ties into the previous books, this book has twists, turns, and an ending that will leave you wanting more! The main character has a fire to her that you would not expect in a Snow White re-imagined. I for one cannot wait for book five to see where all the magic is leading to!
Anyone who has ever looked for a retelling without the predictability of knowing exactly what is going to happen, need look no farther. This is an amazing series that has kept the same intensity and fabulous writing style through out the series. The storylines are so inventive and original that you never feel like you know exactly where the story is taking you. The characters are well written with depth that draws a reader in and leaves you rooting till the last page. Definitely a must read for any fairytale lover.
I like the idea of this series so much! It’s an amazing concept that could maybe use just a little more depth. I think this would be a great series for a tween, especially since the spiciest it gets is some kissing (which I appreciate). I just felt like the overall depth of the plot and world building aspect of the novel was very shallow. Every book in this series could’ve easily been 2x to 3x as long without adding anything except description and character building to make it less shallow of a book. Overall a veeerrry easy, light, quick read that I would recommend to 10-12 year olds.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When I started this series, I didn't have much expectation of enjoying it. I was wary of the fairy tale retelling aspect of the books but decided to give them a try anyway. I am really glad that I did. The author has created an interesting world with colorful characters that I want to root for and see succeed. I think The Phoenix Princess is my favorite of the series so far, but I'm looking forward to reading the next installment.
I expect one surprise with every book I read. This one gave me not one, not two, but three lovely surprises. All basically at the end, of course, because that’s the best. There are so many elements to this story, it made it so much fun to read. I can’t wait to dive into the final installment.

Lots of adventure in this book. New characters come in that the reader and main character are left to sort out their intentions. Old friends join in for more help. Twists and turns and deceit abound. Ending leaves you wanting more.
Enjoyed this new take on the Snow White tale. Lichelle Slater has done it again. Tavia is such a great character, mix in Ferdinand and a raven. She must do all to protect her heart (the phoenix heart) from Selina (The evil queen) and save Mathias. I am so ready for The Crown Prince.
Snow White and the three pigs. What a combination of stories. Tavia is banished to the mirror realm. But her secret is the reason that Selina wants her heart. Will Tavia be able to save her heart and her twin brothers?
A masterful retelling and continuation of the fourth stone series. If you have not read the prequel, I would definitely do that as it adds content to the story And will definitely be a excellent resource when the next and final book comes out
Gerard, why? This book ending really killed me, quickly on to the next one. I am expecting an epic finale to such a good series, really nothing bad to say about this book, this series is such a wild, fun and emotional trip
