Lindsey has knocked it out of the park again!
I love all her books, but I have a special place in my heart for Joey & Paige. Dark romance with tons of angst & suspense is my favourite genre. This book has it in spades.
Paige is a woman scorned & she has revenge in her sights. Joey is a bad a$$, at the top of his game. Watching these two dance around each other & the push and pull between them had me turning the pages into the small hours.
Lindsey’s words are magical. I was hooked from the get go. Can I put in a request for Miles’s book? I’d also love more Paige & Joey. Let me tell you, you are not ready for Joey Valentine. 5 very well deserved stars!

After reading the Prologue, my exact words were Holy $h*t!! I could not wait to devour the rest of this book. I love Lindsey books and this one was no different.
Paige was my kind of woman. She was brave, strong and she was ready for revenge. Joey was yummy, sexy, and powerful. And they were fire together. If it wasn’t for real life getting in my way 🙄 I would have read it in one sitting.

This book had everything I like, strong woman, alpha male, good story, lovers to enemies to lovers and so much more.
Paige is hurt and thrown aside, that's ok she picks her self up and becomes the most powerful women in the underworld. Joey the man who threw her aside is completely shocked that the woman that has moved up in the ranks and become only second in power to him, is Paige.
Paige wants revenge against Joey, or does she. This is the struggle Paige goes through. There are some great quotes from Paige that are said to Joey: "I don't need a man to make it in this world, and I sure as hell don't open my legs to turn a profit." "I'm the motherfucking viper, baby." This is Queen Paige!
King Joey is intent on breaking down her walls and making her is Queen. He thought this would be easy, but Paige is not the same.
I forgot to mention all the HOT STEAMY SEXY TIME. It was perfectly place within the story, not just out of the blue for the sake of a sex scene. (chef's kiss for this)
This is the story of how two powerful people navigate the underworld and find their way back to each other. It is well written and the characters, not only our dual POV's but secondary characters are fleshed out themselves. I highly recommend this book. This was my first read from Lindsey and I don’t know what I have been waiting on. Thank goodness she has 9 other books for me to go back and read. Paige and Joey were just everything.

Joey pushes Paige away because of his own insecurities and fears, long story short he was an idiot. When she shows back up in his life, he vows to never let her go again. His protectiveness is incredibly sexy, like I need my own Joey Valentine. Plus his speeches to her, he’s a panty dropper y’all.

Paige just might be one of my all time favorite heroines, I love a badass boss babe. I loved watching her bring men to their knees, all while I cheer from behind the screen of my kindle. I totally understood her struggle of wanting to be with Joey but also dealing with all the hurt from before. Also, her calling Joey ‘big guy’ was the freaking best. Oh and now I know that I need to test out a leather and lace ensemble on my husband.

Checkmate by Lindsay Powell was a marvelous read. Joey and Paige’s relationship was so interesting, their dynamic was so fun to read. Paige, a sassy and angry take no shit type a woman, getting together with Joey, a strong and powerful man. It’s a hell of read for sure! It was like they were playing with fire and trying not to get burned throughout the wholes book. The dark romance take your breathe away with each chapter. I honestly recommend this book to anyone who loves an intricate sexy dark romances. This book is one of the best out there right now!

Love is fragile, like glass. If you don't handle it with care, it will fall and break, leaving tiny little fragments in it's wake that you will be finding days later.

I loved everything about this book. It had everything you need for a great read. It was suspenseful, it was steamy, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Lindsey did such a great job of telling this story. She kept me intrigued the whole time, and it was almost as if I needed to buckle my seat belt for the wild ride.
Play by the rules or change the game? Fuck. No one ever said that love was easy.
First of all, Paige was amazing. She was a bad ass. She had her heart broken, and instead of wallowing in her grief, she used it to her advantage. She didn't take shit from anyone, and she wasn't afraid to tell you what she thought. She was in a world full of men, and she wasn't afraid. She climbed her way to the top and cemented herself there.
I really loved that Joey was this big scary guy, but he really had the biggest heart when it came to Paige. He would have literally moved the sun and stars for her, and he wasn't afraid to tell her that every chance he got. He didn't care how long it took for her to figure out her feelings. He was like the ultimate book boyfriend, because he was a bad ass, but he was also a big softie. I loved that about him.
I watch as the king brings the queen to her knees.
I loved that even though this book was a romance, it also had so much more. There was an underlying story going on, the action had you on the edge of your seat, and the chemistry between the two of them was off the charts. Lindsey created this whole world and once I started reading I didn't want to stop. I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

I loved seeing how their relationship evolved as they challenged each other, Paige working through her past hurt, Joey dealing with the fear of losing Paige and the way they expressed their true feelings for each other.
It made for an emotionally exciting, hot and thrilling read. And the underlying dangers and threats of underground world added more suspense and edge to the overall story.

MUST READ!
The best way I can describe this book is with this ancient etymology.
"Heav'n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn'd, Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn'd."
This was my first Lindsey Powell read and it certainly will not be my last. This woman is GIFTED! The prologue gripped me and that was that , I was invested beyond belief. This story starts off with a woman who would give anything to be the woman by her man's side. Then when she's betrayed, she seeks revenge. And, get out the popcorn cause I'm here for it 🙋🏻♀️
Pagie Daniels was out for blood, and Joey never saw her coming.
He thought letting her go would protect her from THE dangerous world he lived in but he was wrong.
Because a kingdom ruled by a queen is -historically speaking- more powerful, and Pagie was determined to show Joey, she is was the most ruthless queen of them all!
The game was set, but who will be the last one standing?

5.5 stars and worth every one!! I can’t love this any more.
Checkmate is AMAZING! Oh boy, this fast paced, angst filed, extremely hot read will suck you in and you won’t leave! At all.. until your finished. I think I read this in record time, once I started I was a goner.
Lindsey Powell has produced one powerful story.
Paige is ready to claim her crown. Being scorned in the past made her tougher, made her smarter. Will she be able to play the king for a shot at supremacy or will Joey stand his ground and show her how the kingdom is really run.
Let their game begin.

Joey is the king of the underworld. He knows the downfalls of his job and if he has to hurt the ones he loves to keep them safe, he’s no problem doing that. Paige is the woman whose heart Joey broke and we all know the saying about a woman scorned. Paige is out for revenge and she’s determined to knock Joey off his throne once and for all. It’s obvious fairly quickly that the sparks between these two still burn as hot as before, their chemistry is still as intense and as hard to ignore, as Paige is about to find out. She thinks she’s ready to deal with Joey but are there’s till feelings lingering between them?

For the first time in my whole time I've reading my lady crush is bigger than my man crush.
Paige Daniels is total bada**
She walks into a room, head held high with her high heeled shoes and bam she has your attention.
I loved everything about Paige, I'm always raving everything about the man but Paige really stole the show for me.
Dont get me wrong Joey is bloody amazing too. These two together are off the charts. The sizzling chemistry, the heat, everything about these two screams pure sex.
When i first started seeing teasers about this book i knew i had to read it, no doubt in my mind.

I love traditional romances by Lindsey Powell, they are always satisfyingly sexy and fun. However, the book that stayed with me the most was her one and only psychological thriller, Fixation. I kept coming back to it in my mind and was blown away by how dark and captivating the writing was. With Checkmate, Powell has combined those two genres into something shady, provocative, and layered.
Paige isn't a wilting flower when Joey walks out of her life. She has always known about Joey's life of crime and when he abandons her, she decides to get revenge instead of pining after him. The result is fast-paced action with just the right blend of affection. A five-star suspense romance!

Well that was hot as hell! Joey breaking Paige’s heart hardened her into a woman that eventually comes gunning for the life he left her for. What ensues is nothing short of explosive on every front. Their chemistry is palpable from the start, the complicated lives they lead starting a dance that crosses boundaries on every level. The banter, the heat, the danger, it’s all fantastic. And then ending is nothing short of perfection.

This was the 1st book i have read of Lindsey Powell and OMG i wasn't disappointed!! I devoured this book in one sitting holy cow the chemistry in this book was off the charts!! Where to start! This book is fabulous. And I mean FABULOUS. Lindsey has crafted an amazing story and I love that our heroine was so strong. She takes no prisoners and it's really refreshing to read. Not forgetting our hero, Joey, he's such a great Alpha character, yet still so likeable. I couldn't put this book down, yet I didn't want it to be over quickly either. Well done on a fantastic book, Lindsey!

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. When Paige gets pushed aside by the love her life, a transformation takes place that will leave you in awe of her. Her strength and need for revenge make her a formidable character and I absolutely loved her. What happens between her and Joey is a jaw dropping game of cat and mouse with the love/hate relationship enough to send your kindle up in flames. I loved it from beginning to end.

OMG, I loved this dark and steamy romance! I was sucked in from the start! Paige is such a badass! No way was she taking being tossed aside by Joey laying down. No, she builds her revenge over 3 years and becomes an underworld queen that will take him down. Joey will play her game but only to get her back. He caused himself just as much heartbreak when pushed Paige away. Their chemistry is even more scorching after all these years. You don't want to miss seeing the king get his queen!

Checkmate is my first book by Lindsey, but it won’t be my last! I’m such a sucker for a dark romance, and this fits the bill perfectly.
Paige is a woman on a mission, and as the saying goes, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” That’s for damn sure! She’s a total badass and I love her character so much. I also loved that Joey is this ridiculously powerful kingpin, but a complete soft little teddy bear when it comes to Paige. It was the best.
Can’t wait to read more by Lindsey!

And Paige, christ. You felt her presence throughout this story. She was fierce and strong and I loved her.
I know you normally love the hero’s throughout stories but in this book, Paige dominated it for me and it was perfect.

I absolutely loved Joey and Paige! This might be my favorite Lindsey book yet!
After reading the blurb and i knew it was dark romance i dived right in! Get ready for all the angst and suspense because you will be on the edge of your seat!
I couldn’t put this down and was hooked from the very first page.
You guys will definitely love this one and i highly recommend this! 5 stars!

Firstly I hate that real life got in the way of me reading this book, I didn't want to put it down.
I loved the dark underworld, I loved paige. She is a kick ass bitch that take no messing, she commands power and gets its.
The chemistry between her and joey is exciting, ferocious and so hot!
Well done lindsey on writing a fantastic book!

I loved this story. Paige was a complete badass! I love how she was so fiesty and independent. And Joey..... Well..... He was just a walking, talking, hot alpha a-hole who is sexy as hell 🔥🤤🔥🤤. I loved their relationship together and really hope these characters start talking again so we can get another book! Loved it ♥️

What can I say anything other than this is an absolute hit! I loved the chemistry between joey and Paige, and I thoroughly loved the darkness in the story.

This was such a colorful story of how two mafia heads came to terms with what they were willing to sacrifice for happiness within the confines of a life of drugs, death, and determination. Paige was a the ultimate description of a woman you don't cross. She built herself up (from the literal bottom), and she's staying on her throne. Joey, being her arch-nemesis (and former lover), brought the fury to the street (and to Paige's life). Is it possible for both of these headstrong/deadly "bosses" to survive one another? Or will one land the supreme "Don" status?
There were a couple of critiques I would make, mostly being the language (verbiage) that Lindsey used, because it was a bit "foreign" to me (which makes sense, as she is from England and I know there are differences in usage). I would also encourage some finesse with the harsh words. This is meant to be a hardcore, mafia romance, and I get that; I just would have liked something other than "the f word" (can we use explicits in our reviews, I don't know?!?!) used numerous times on every page.
Overall, I LOVED the last half of the book (and didn't have anything to critique). It really got the story flowing and I couldn’t stop turning the pages at the point. I would definitely encourage anyone that loves mafia-type romances to grab this one. It's so good!

I loved that this wasn't a typical read, things I expected were flipped and I love the powerful message this book sends for women in particular. Joey and Paige's chemistry jumps off the page, is there anything better for a romance reader than to feel a palpable tension between characters when reading?! Lindsey throws in the right mix of steam to the story in a way that doesn't feel forced for the sake of it, it's only added where it naturally fits in the story and that is something I want in romance novels.
There's so much I want to say, but I really don't want to spoil too much which makes this incredibly hard! This was my first read of Lindsey's work, and I have no doubt I will read more of her words in future 🙂.

There’s nothing more sexy than a mafia romance! The element of danger, power and strong characters are usually what we can expect from this genre and I’m always down for that but lately I’ve been needing more!
Guess what, I found it in Checkmate by Lindsey Powell. This book was freaking awesome and the characters had me hooked from the prologue till the end!!
It’s filled with passion and the struggle for power between the main characters Paige and Joey was some of the best I have read in this genre!
Now, I love an alpha asshole and Joey fits that’s description to a T! He oozes sex appeal, danger and the power drips from his pours!
But Paige absolutely stole the show! Hell heath no fury like a woman scorned, especially Paige! I love how she dominated this male oriented world and showed that even a woman can be as dangerous if not more dangerous than a man can be! She was a force be reckoned will and I bloody well loved it!! Queue, the girl crush!!!
I’m so happy that Lindsey took a chance on this story, you absolutely knocked it out of the park and it’s by far my favourite book of yours!! I can’t wait to read more of your dark romances in the future!!

Joey and Paige are on another new level of the hottest and steaming, passionate raw couple ever! 😍 They try so hard to keep business and their past apart, fight eachother to be on top. Though when the sizzling passion ignites them, its hard to keep their hands off eachother, their love was hard to keep away yet what's stopping them? Their pride or their past? Or both? 😳😱 I love how strong willed Paige has become of, so independent and gaining respect of by others, pegging others to see her as a strong queen. Determined to bring her once love to his knees but Joey is not one to give up either or his title but then he's realizing things and wondering what's he really wants, his title and lifestyle or the love of his life, Paige. The action that went down in this book was so gripping I loved how it interfered with relationships with other characters 🤯 Also I'd like to give a shout out to Donovan because I really liked him 😭 Overall this was so good, Joey and Paige fighting for to be on top in the Underworld...who called the shots? 😏
