Time Paradox Ghostwriter was one of the most promising new series for me when it was first coming out... but had to rush through so much plot int ended up being not-great. The series concerns a wannabe manga pro who just can't come up with something original... so when he finds a time-displaced future volume of Shonen Jump he thinks it's a dream and draws the manga he finds in the volume! It's an amazing success, he's finally become a pro mangaka and everyone loves the series. But then another future issue of Shonen Jump appears and he realizes it wasn't a dream, he actually plagiarized the series!
Unfortunately, Japanese readers of Shonen Jump really hated. I mean, REALLY hated it. The reaction was so bad that after only a few chapters they had to completely revamp the direction of the manga, changing characters and concepts and rushing through what would likely have been extended plot points. Even by the end of this first volume we have giant time skips as they desparately try to get this story to a place where readers would be happy with it. Unfortunately most readers had already given up, and the ones who stuck around grew increasingly dissatisfied with any attempts to save the story.
As it stands, volume 1 is promising. It's got fantastic art and clearly has a message it wants to say about the nature of creativity specifically in reference to the terrifying industry that is Japanese manga and Shonen Jump. It really wants to be "Bakuman meets Steins;Gate" but never really got the chance.
Tried not to get too into this as it’s been cancelled already. But I kinda really liked it, and the fact it’s gonna have a terrible ending makes me not wanna read anymore. Anyway it’s about a guy who gets a future copy of shonen jump and he publishes the future manga as his own. An awesome idea, and executed quite well. Enjoyed reading a manga about manga aswell.
Don't be fooled by the strong start. Time Paradox Ghostwriter is a complete mess of a manga. You can have unlikable protagonists, and you can even have loser protagonists. However. you cannot have unlikable loser protagonists, who Sasaki is. He spends most of the first seven chapters floundering around, making bad decisions, and being generally rude to people. The pacing is utter shit, with months of time skipped. There's a twist late in the first volume, but it comes too late. If you want a manga about making manga, read Bakuman. If you want a time travel anime, watch Steins;Gate. Do not touch Time Paradox Ghostwriter, it is one of the most disappointing things I've ever read.
It irritated me to see Sasaki copying Aino's art and story, because it doesn't matter if the manga is from 10 years later she is the owner of the work, and it gets even worse when Sasaki keeps making internal excuses for the plagiarism saying that it's his responsibility to move forward since he stole Aino's future.
But in the end, since it is difficult for me to give manga below 4 ratings (unless they are bad or very bad), I'm giving them 4 stars.
