This book would be enjoyed by any young fan of gymnastics. It's well organized and incredibly informative. It was longer than I expected and could be a great resource for a gymnastic teacher or coach to use with their gymnasts.

An early copy of this book was made available to me by the publisher through netgalley. This is my honest review.

An Engaging Introduction

This is not an instruction book, in the sense that it doesn't really teach an aspiring young gymnast how to perform any particular movement or series of movements. It's more of an introduction to the sport of gymnastics, and in that regard I thought it succeeded admirably.

Like most DK efforts the book is well made and durable. The printing is high quality, the text is crisp, and the content is well illustrated. It's set up as a series of double page spreads, which allows more room for sketching out particular moves. Generally, for each spread, you get about six photos, an exploded diagram of a particular movement, a brief bit of introductory text, and a few one or two sentence factoids and/or sidebars.

The book opens with a brief history of gymnastics. We move to the different forms, or styles, of competition, (artistic, aerobic, and so on). Then we go into detail on each. We feature one or two signature movements for each major piece of equipment, (balance beam, pommel horse, uneven bars, etc.), and highlight past stars' accomplishments. This is rounded out with info about scoring, how competitions are conducted, training gyms, and the like.

The upshot is that a young reader will get a good sense of what is involved with "gymnastics" and will have a basic introduction to the equipment, events, and programs. That's a nice tidy package, complemented by a sharp look and accessible text. This struck me as a nice find for a budding gymnast.

(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Oh what fun! This book would be an amazing gift for any young gymnast. It's a quick overview of the sport, and includes information on each of the events in artistic gymnastics, how to drawings of different gymnastics moves, tidbits on star gymnasts, as well as brief overviews of rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, acrobatic gymnastics, parkour, and aerobic gymnastics. It even has a quiz at the end! I enjoyed learning about a sport I love to watch, and looking at the gymnasts featured in the book.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review. ♡

Do you know a girl aged seven to nine who is fascinated by gymnastics?  If you do, this book will be perfect for them. Beautifully illustrated with many photos and diagrams, this title is comprehensive.  There are sections on different types of gymnastics, the various pieces of equipment, the role of teamwork, star gymnasts, a quiz and more.  For those who dream of, or just watch, the Olympics, this one is for you.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
