Having wanted to be a journalist when she was a teenager, Sara actually ended up on the dark side, in PR. From there, it was a short skip to writing for pleasure, and from there to drafting her first book, The Garden Plot. This is the first novel in a romance series where gardens feature in a BIG way - she inherited green fingers from her wonderful grandmother and gardening is a passion.

Sara recently moved from London to York and is loving the open skies and the green fields. And a HUGE garden! Although not a country girl, she's discovered the joys of no streetlights, septic tanks and ordering logs. Going from an underground tube or bus every three minutes, bus timetables in a small Yorkshire town have been a bit of a shock.

Sara loves being a writer although it's not her only job - yet. She's keeping her fingers firmly crossed. The second book in the English Garden Romance series – Love in a Mist – was released in October 2020. The third book will be released in May 2021 - she hopes! What started as a triology has now become a quartet, so there's one more story to tell before the series ends.

She loves hearing from readers who have thoughts about her books and characters - and even about gardening! - so please visit http://www.sarasartagne.com (good for news and freebies!) or make contact on Twitter - @Sarasartagneauthor

I often think of how people who are so very different end up together. It happens more than we realize. When you are a “people watcher”, as I have been known to be on occasion, you tend to see past some of the superficial masks that couples wear when they don’t know someone is looking and the expressions and gesticulations can say so much. Body language, posturing, the way someone smiles or looks away. It’s actually quite fascinating. Before anyone thinks I’m a stalker, I just like to be observant of surroundings and notice things. Usually when I’m in a public place, taking a break from reading my book or a meal. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy reading Sara Sartagne’s books so much. I don’t need to tear my eyes from the page to people watch. Her descriptions of her characters are so three dimensional and complex that you have to PAY ATTENTION. There are chapters where body language tells it all. This is a skill. One not easily come by.

The Garden Plot is a romance, to be sure. A romance between two very different people. Especially when they first meet. It is the development of both characters and of their inner growth and self awareness that so engrossed me. Typically in romance novels, you have the guy, who’s amazing and wonderful, has a mysterious background or a flaw of two (nothing severe) and turns out to be Prince Charming. While the “heroine” is all a flutter over some dastardly issue and the “hero” eventually saves the day. And gets the girl. Ah....not so, says Sara, who dishes up a delightfully sassy, I’ve Got This, kind of gal who would rather die than cozy up to a man to save her. As well, you have a “hero” who starts out having Delusions of Grandeur that the Sixties never happened and he still gets to hang out with Cro-Magnon Man keeping women in their place....in the home, being a wife and mother. NEVER a businesswoman! Egad! The Horror!

Neither of these characters are the usual fare, but when you throw in two scheming teenage girls, a complete creep of a brother-in-law and a wishy-washy sister, a sexpot girlfriend, a lovely assistant Gardner and his partner, a lovestruck teenage boy and an entire town divided down the middle ready to riot with placards in hand, well...this isn’t your usual romance. And I say thank goodness for that! It was fresh, new and different. It was interesting without having too much excess fluff. And as I’ve said, there were layers of things to think about when absorbing this couple and their surroundings.

I like how they came together, I like how they argued like “real people” , with Sam calling Jonas real names because he was a bastard. I like how she started to realize that she also had faults and that she could do something about them. I especially liked how Jonas stopped being Cro-Magnon.

All in all a great book!

What would have made it better, would have given it that full fifth star for me was a few small details. Why was Jonas a Cro-Magnon? We learn the reason peripherally...but there is a story there. Something deeper than what was expressed changed his attitude so drastically. Cemented it to such a hard slab! There was also a mystery there, possibly that could have been explored. I felt that Jonas could have had a bit more of a bad boy past related to his previous wife. And Sam could have had a few more memories of happiness with her mum and dad. Although I must say I’m prejudiced because I read their short story first. Those types of past developments would have rounded out the whole person for me and given insight as to why they were the person they were when they met and why the changes they made were so deep.

Irregardless, I loved this novel and can’t wait to start the next! Onward and upward!

And you think he needs someone with a brain?" Lisbeth said slowly.
"He does. Someone... stimulating. To give him other interests besides his blasted work," Magda said.

It was the cover and the match-making teen that had me all over this book - as a child, I loved Kästner The Parent Trap-inspiring book and I'd hoped to find some similar shenanigans in this one. Sartagne did not disappoint! I loved Magda's resourcefulness, the way she always managed to make it seem to her dad like her schemes made perfect sense and wasn't he proud of her for being so inventive? SHE was the one I was cheering for throughout this whole novel, and her investment in Jonas and Sam's relationship, meant I was invested as well.

The blurb wasn't quite clear on the You've Got Mail opposing sides Jonas and Sam find themselves on (or maybe I just raced through it too quickly!), which is not really my cup of tea. For its genre, though, it managed it pretty well, making most of the non-communication that is so central to these kind of stories feel quite natural.

My main gripe with the story was Jonas; he's set up as this misogynistic bastard who is learning better ways, but when the reason for his misogyny is explained, in an obvious move to have the audience sympathizing with him and forgive him, it only exposed *more* misogyny which wasn't called out by any of the characters (I wonder if even the writer herself has noticed?).

I loved Sam, though. I loved her independence, I loved her enthusiasm, I loved how she gave everything her all. She made me smile.

I picked this one up as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Recommend if: You like You've Got Mail and local politics
Avoid if: You prefer relationships built on friendship; for a romance novel, Sam and Jonas actually don't spend all that much time together
Content warnings: mystery disease, dead mother, misogyny, dead dog, alcohol, sex scene

In this, the first book in a new series by this author, a garden designer, Sam, is struggling to keep her late fathers company going. She’s desperate to get more work, so she can prove to herself she made the right choice in trying to follow in her fathers footsteps. Jonas, a European property developer has been felled by a mystery virus, which means he has to take 6 months off, not something he wants to do, but worried what would happen to his teenage daughter Magda, he reluctantly hands over the reins of his company. Magda, and her best friend Lisbeth hatch a plan to bring Jonas and Sam together.

This is pure escapism, set in beautiful countryside, in an idyllic village and with 2 lovely main characters. It is an easy, satisfying read, where you know what the outcome is going to be, but it’s still a book that draws you in. Ideal to read on holiday or just any day you want to sit and read a good book.

The Garden Plot is a truly delightful read. From the cover to the characters to the storyline--I enjoyed everything. The story revolves around the fiercely independent landscape designers Sam Winterson and the somewhat cantankerous and old-fashioned Jonas Keane, who also happens to be a widower. Jonas's daughter, Magda, is determined to get her father and Sam together, so she and her friend Lizbeth attempt to do some plotting (i.e. matchmaking). Sartagne does a great job bringing the reader into the world of gardens both big and small, and she captured teenage girls to a T (they almost stole the show, in a good way!). I look forward to reading the next in the series!

Magda and Lisbeth play matchmaker. Sam and Jonas' journey was cute. I loved how much San challenged Jonas, never afraid to store speak up for what she believes in. It was refreshing to read a book that didn't focus on "adult times" but still told a love story. I had to research some of the British slang. The name Magda for a teenager...not a fan. I'd continue reading the series.

The story is a bit slow, and even though I think it helped with the world building, it almost made me not to finish this book. The first half of the book was really slow and all the characters, apart from the teenage girls, were not likable at all. Everything, the story and my fondness for the characters, picked up after the 60% of the book. I really enjoyed the second part of the story and it made me wanting to read the sequel.

What do you get when you have two teenage girl matchmakers, one garden designer, one property developer, and a protest? This is one engrossing book with twists and turns throughout. Sam Winterson is a garden designer who took over her father’s company when he passed away. Jonas Keane is a property developer who bought a house in Sam’s village. His daughter, Magda, and Sam’s niece, Lisbeth, decide to try to get Sam and Jonas together by any means necessary. There are some complications, a protest group to the new development in the area, and family tensions. I enjoyed this book. Sam and Jonas had an instant connection but circumstances didn’t let them act on it. I enjoyed the antics of the teenage girls. I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this story. Two teen friends decide that their relatives would make a great couple. They hatch a plan to get their relatives together. This is where the story of Sam and Jonas begins. Their budding relationship, much like the gardens that Sam designs, starts with good soil
But there are rocks and weeds in the soil. Sam and Jonas will need to find a way to their own path in order to be together. I liked the chemistry of Sam and Jonas. I recommend this story as a sweet love story.

An fun story, full of wonderful characters, some drama, some twists, and a good story line.
I like Sam very much. Jonas is amazing - even if is a bit a dinosaur about employing women.
And Magda and Lizbeth are a handful!
And the interactions, the dialogues are real and funny. Sam’s cheeky banter with Jonas is hilarious.
A real pleasure!

While I don't normally pick up a romance book, as an avid gardener, this one intrigued me with its gardening storyline. Sara Sartagne's story did not disappoint! Sam is struggling to keep her landscaping business afloat, while Jonas Keane, a property developer is struck down with a mystery illness that keeps him at home for six months. Soon, a scheme is concocted by a pair of plotting teens to get the two together. What could go wrong? A fun, flirty romance with lots of gardening through in for good measure. Looking forward to book 2!

This story has it all - gardens, meddlesome but nice children, and environmental justice. The characters are well-rounded and believable. This dash of small-town life is ideal for this hot summer! I sincerely recommend this book to readers.

Sara Sartagne's THE GARDEN PLOT is light, charming, so well-crafted I felt like I knew each and every one of her characters. Put simply, a delightful, surprising, and intelligent story results when two teenagers plot a strategic romance while two strangers are attracted to one another while a community is in an uproar over a proposed development that will permanently destroy the green space and quality of life in their beautiful community. I enjoyed the read, the escape, the well-written story of this wonderful story. I received a copy of this book for my review and this review is unbiased and submitted voluntarily.

I enjoyed Sam and Jonas’ journey to a relationship, along with the two teenagers matchmaking plot. The characters were like able, although in some places their chemistry was a little off, although that could have just been in my mind.
The beginning took me a bit to get into, but once I did, I was intrigued.

Predictable? Absolutely! Did I care. Nope! It’s a very charming story with likeable main characters. The perfect book for people who like to garden, people who like to read in the garden en hopeless romantics.

I got this arc in exchange for an honest review.

A nice and enjoyable read

The story started off a little slowly but it picked up along the way and became an enjoyable read. Sam was frustrating, sometimes annoying, but I liked seeing her turn around and realise the error of her ways. Jonas was flawed in his own way, but less annoying. Overall both characters were well developed and their character arcs well thought out.

Magda and Lisbeth were great characters but sometimes their dialogue made them sound a lot older than 16. It also took a while to realise they were teenagers as the ages of the characters were never mentioned. Only a minor detail though as the story was still enjoyable and I’m looking forward to reading book 2.

This is book 1 of the English Garden Romance series and also my first experience reading something by this author, and I found it to be a fun and enjoyable read. Sam is not interested in a relationship. She has enough to worry about struggling to manage her father's company after he passes. Jonas is a silent partner in a housing development project that puts him right in Sam's path. While these two can't help but butt heads initially, they soon develop a budding romance, with a little help from a couple of mini-matchmakers. It was great to see how the characters grew and their relationship developed. They were charming and realistic and I enjoyed seeing them grow closer. It was an entertaining story that kept my interest all the way through. I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the next installment.

This is the second book I have read by this author. The reason I have only given this 4 stars is that I found myself a little disappointed. Whereas the first book I read by this author kept me guessing and excited to know what was going to happen in the end, this one seemed obvious where the 'bump in the road' was going to come from pretty much right at the start and the plot went pretty much as expected.

However, I really enjoy the author's writing style which makes the book a really enjoyable read. I also really liked the way she wrote the characters, who are typically likeable and full of depth. Te only character I didn't like was the daughter who seemed a bit of a spoilt brat to me, but you don't need to like every character in a story and she was still very well written. Overall I really enjoy reading work from this author and I look forward to reading more in this series.

Intelligent romance
If you like your romance served with a real story and context then this is one for you. The story is set in present day Derbyshire in the villages and surrounding towns. If you've ever lived in a village you'll recognise the context - people know each other and have expectations based on your history! It also illustrates some of the real concerns of rural living - of tensions between the need for housing and maintaining our green belt. The characters are well drawn and believable and you care what happens to both the main protagonists and the supporting cast. This book is the first in a new series and I'm looking forward to learning more about the story of Jonas and Sam as well as some of the others that appear in this debut. I'd certainly recommend that you get to know them!

Two teenage friends Magda and Lisbeth plan a scheme to get Magda's father, Jonas, together with the Lisbeth's aunt Sam. The plot to hire garden designer Sam to work on Jonas' garden. Some fun along the way as the two girls try to make things happen. However, complications arise as a new homes development is planned for the village in this story and Jonas has a hidden interest . A thoroughly entertaining read. Read an ARC for an honest review.

An okay read

I heard so many good things about this book , but found the story a slow. The conversations seemed odd and stilted. I connected with the two main characters, separately, but their chemistry was not really explained well.

If a book is well written, it takes me a couple of days to finish, this one took me a couple of months.

A lovely, gentle read that just keeps you turning the pages. Whilst you read you’re picturing the garden at Brook Lodge, the Dog and Duck pub and Sam’s cottage. I'm also imagining what the characters look like and who could play them in a mini TV series! This is always a good sign in my opinion and a testament to Sara Sartagne’s writing. I finished the book and then went straight back to Amazon to buy book two because I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
