Throughout her 30-year career, Dr. Tammy Nelson found that couples therapists have traditionally been taught little about sex therapy, and sex therapists have minimal education in relationship systems. This leaves clinicians searching for more interventions for both couples and sexuality. To bridge the gap, Dr. Nelson, relationship expert and board-certified sexologist, has gathered the top authorities in the field of integrative treatment to create this groundbreaking book for all therapists looking for a comprehensive treatment resource.Featuring new approaches combining sex therapy and relationship counseling, Integrative Sex & Couples Therapy brings treatment skills into practice, with real-world experiences, interventions, techniques, strategies, and case examples. Tammy Nelson, PhD, is a world-renowned expert in relationships, a psychotherapist in private practice, and the author of The New Monogamy. In addition, Nelson is a popular lecturer around the world on sexuality and human relationships and global relational change. She is a board-certified sexologist, an AASECT-certified sex therapist, a licensed professional counselor, and a certified Imago relationship therapist. She resides in the New York City area, where she works in her private practice treating couples who are looking to restore passion to their relationships, recover from infidelity, and create their new monogamy, one agreement at a time.
I read this for my current work/studies in therapeutic processes as a fun little break from the mostly CBT-focused approaches of my other texts, and I am SO glad I did. ISCT really is its own branch of therapy with a distinct tone and approach to intimacy and connection. You just don't see this kind of conversational material and ideology *anywhere* else. Feels like stepping into a universe slightly to the left of familiar ground (CBT) but in the most incredible, secure, and fascinating way possible.
Cannot express my appreciation for Nelson's approach enough; the book's tone was informative, professional, and focused on competencies of connection. I genuinely don't know how to talk about this without GUSHING, so I'm just gonna do that: This is a must-read for anyone working in CBT or related fields. I'd also recommend this to anyone who is working on their relationship to connection and connectivity (different things) and anyone interested in the finer points of the therapeutic process for traditionally more "taboo" topics (i.e. sex, intimacy, medical issues related to the former, etc.). Nelson offers fantastic examples of conversations that may come up in practice and provides methods of working with the client through these issues. Just... wow. (I really do hope this comes off as sincere because I mean it all. This book was amazing, highly recommend.)
Really useful book for therapists that don't want to overlook the relational and sexual problems that often arise with our clients.
It brought forth the importance of these issues in an inclusive and comprehensive manner. It has given me further knowledge on how to tackle these issues and peeked my interest to learn more. I'd recommend this to other therapist or people who want to learn more about relational and sexual issues, it's written in a pleasant manner and I'd say easy to follow also for non therapists
