There are millions of men and women from all over the world who can establish themselves as having had coal-miners as ancestors. In Scotland alone there were in my life time hundreds of Collieries with thousands of Miners and over the previous two hundred years coal-mining was the major source of employment. There are very few deep mining Collieries left today and therefore very few coal-miners. I am one of the few and in this book I am going to do my best to give an insight into what it was like to be an Engineer working 1200ft underground on a mechanised face-line.
