Absolutely brilliant.

I will be honest it was a bit jarring to have different narrators - especially when SJ talks like a Dawson's Creek extra BUT once I had gotten past that it was excellent. I think the story has become richer for having experienced it from multiple perspectives - because up until now we've only experienced them via Crisanta. I thoroughly enjoyed that we got to see the fallout from Book 7 and all of them dealing with their guilt/sadness/relationship with Crisa, it's incredibly in-depth and I loved it.

The quest element was excellent - especially the different teams of Chance and Daniel and frankly we all know that Daniel and Crisa are endgame (if they eventually realise it). Also finally glad that Kai gets hers - honestly though what a slow burn but totally worth it. Probably my fave sequence when SJ puts it all together (AT LAST). I am thoroughly intrigued as to where Book 9 (BOOK 10 TOO plz?) is going to go.... #finale ?

This book brought so many pieces of the Crisanta Knight puzzle together for me! I loved that there were many character POVs that I've already come to know, so getting a chance to be in their head was awesome. This is a series that brings fairytale retellings to a wonderful new level! The children of fairytale characters that are determined to make their own story. It's relatable and fantastic! You definitely want to go back and start at the beginning for this series. It is so worth it!

This series is perfect for readers that enjoy:
✨ Fairytale Retellings.
✨ Female Heroines.
✨ Slow-Burn Romance.
✨ Fantastic Friendships.
✨ Magical Worlds.

I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

there is so much i can say about this.

"once upon a time in a land far, far away there was a princess whose prince never came, whose friends were all wildcards, and who was desperately trying to save the world one strategic choice at a time . . . "

first off, for taking on different POVs after we've come to know and love crisa's voice so well and so dearly was risky... but it worked, and it was really enjoyable, and yeah, sometimes i struggled (*cough* blue *cough*) but it was very well done! it enhanced the story and made our hero(ines) seem so much more alive!

"Still, the road to change was hard, long, and merciless."

i will rant without revealing too much...

the inner, emotional pain of guilt, shame, bitterness, anger and isolation that each of our heroes and heroines had to work through was tangible and, in some parts, really relatable.

their struggles led to change and character development. it led to better friendships, better heroes, and painful victories. i enjoyed how this was so tied up in the different quests we took part in!

"life without struggle is empty, and people without struggle lack character."

my favourite parts are tied up with so many aspects of this story!! and i can't give away too much!!

i love the friendships, the friend groups, and the way they each grow individually and grow together.

we saw different people paired and grow to trust, challenge, and forgive each other.
we saw snark, we saw banter, we saw vulnerability...
we took part in companionship, in conflict, and in caring criticism... and i love it!

"she—like many of my friends—was entwined and blended with my story like yarn in a tapestry. unless you looked closely, we did not exist as separate materials. together, we created a whole."

i enjoy the worlds and the travelling. we got to see some old worlds and revisit some old ones - just as we got to meet new people and check in with familiar ones.

i particularly loved the different aspects of old fairytales woven into the fabric of the setting, the storyline, the quests (like mulan & alice in wonderland).

that brings us to the plot, the storyline, and boy, did we have an adventure! (or eight...)

there were same high stakes (a life or three was on the line, and therefore also the fate of the universe), and some tense grudges that made the teamwork hard, and some personal hardships that held our heroes and heroines back...

there was some heartbreak that i was absolutely thrilled at - some reunions i'd been looking forward to - and a kiss we'd been waiting for since the moment we met the two friends.

"forgiveness is necessary. remember that. you are not meant to stay broken."

all in all, it was absorbing adventure that kept me up late at night and had my thoughts wandering during the day. it was time spent with friends whose introspective growth challenged my own... and it was a story i can't wait to see continue.

i personally hope we get crisa's voice back (because i miss her) and me, being in love with daniel daniels (sorry jason and chance and all you other wonderful heroes) need to see some more of daniel daniels... and we all know the very special bond daniel and crisa have.

*clears throat* anyway, what a way to begin 2021... see y'all again at the end.

"seems like a good time for a finale, don't you think?"

before
is this... you guys, are we getting the gang’s povs? chapters through the eyes of our beloved friends?? scenes written from daniel’s point of view?

oh, be still my heart.

never have i wished for new year’s to come so quickly.

"Life without fighting is not life at all; it is sleep -- passive and a waste of a soul. And furthermore -- there is a better way out there, but it is up to us to find it"

"Optimism is positivity without contingency. This is perseverance - determination and grit field by faith in the face of negativity."

"People get their hearts broken all the time and find a way to go on. That is the maddest thing of all, and it is also the most wonderful."

When we last left off, our heroes were in Dreamland attempting to save Mauvrey & Mark from the sleeping curse they are under. Without going into detail let's just say that all did not go as planned and Crisa was left behind.

Fast forward to the Darling's castle in Book and the awakening of both Mauvrey and Mark. While patiently waiting for Mauvrey to recover Paige's memories of where the genies are located, the crew begins scheming and planning on how to find and rescue Crisa. For once she is not the Knight in shining armor and is instead the damsel needing to be rescued.

Cue the Midnight Law aspect, where heroes and their chosen questors can go on a quest to save the person they love. The caveat? Do so by midnight or be turned into stone...forever. After going through the test to see who qualifies to enact the Law it seems both Daniel & Chance are able. So our friends are split into two groups, with a like-minded goal in mind ... find the four flames and pass the tests to advance to the final end game and reach Crisa ... or lose Daniel and Chance to be garden statuary and Crisa to the darkness that plagues her and is itching to get out...

Ok... seriously. This was an amazing adventure through all things fairy tale. Not only do we get to go back through previous lands like Oz, Camelot and Toyland but we get to explore Swan Lake, Wonderland (in all its insanity and loveable frustrations) and finally get to glimpse our heroes in Earth.

This is by far my favorite of the series and that is saying a lot because let's face it Book 7 had me all OVER the place with feelings 🤣🤣🤣. My favorite part of this book?? Seeing it from the other characters' POV. I LOVE all the characters in the series (yes even those we love to hate because let's face it....they are written so well you can't help but hate/like them 🤣🤣).

The relationship aspect of this was such a great lesson for all of us to live by...and it was touching to learn and change alongside our heroes as they looked within themselves and realize just how strong, capable, adaptable and quest-worthy they are...both alone and together. Sadly, I'm STUCK with that ending and have to wait in painful suspension for Book 9! 🤣🤣🤣 This is a series I recommend to everyone!!!

When Geanna Culbertson invited me to read and review one of her Crisanta Knight books, I, of course, went for book #8. [I loved the cover]. She did warn me that the plot has become quite complex - she wasn’t kidding. But once I caught on to the storyline - 𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙩!

I don’t have the room here to do justice to this clever and magical book so I’m doing this review a little differently.

Here’s what you’ll find (and love) within these 715 pages. (Yes, she loves her big books)!

“Life is a war and monsters keep coming. Kill one and it is only a matter of time before another springs up. But you fight anyway, for two reasons. Life without fighting is not life at all; it is sleep—passive and a waste of a soul. And furthermore—there is a better way out there, but it is up to us to find it.”

Switching the narration, Crisa’s closest friends now take up the narrative in the eighth instalment of the series. Lost in another realm, it is up to her friends to save Crisa and the realm. Things are going “better” with the peace talks and the Midnight Law Test clock ticking faster than ever. Can they maintain peace with the commons and save their best friend without being turned into stones at the same time?

This book is the latest Crisanta Knight book I read by far since I came across the series. More engrossing than ever, I am drawn to the book’s riveting plot, inspiring and complex characters, long-awaited twists, exciting suspense and meaningful messages. As the story goes, I feel more and more in love with the series. The author certainly knows how to keep the readers on the edge of their seats.

The author surely has shaken things up a bit by switching the narration. Our narration by far has been Crisa, I would not have chosen another. She is the most awesome person and the perfect narrator of the story. However, I love this change of pace of using multiple points of view. It is true that I really miss Crisa reading this book, but I appreciate the author exploring her friends’ points of view in the book. It has been one of my favourite books of my favourite series (actually I love all of them intensely). The narrations enable me to understand the major characters’ thoughts and feel with them as the big twists hit them. Like Blue and Daniel especially. To be honest, it just makes sense when the changes come and makes me feel much more excited about it. The tone and diction clearly indicated the narrator’s identity. As much as I love Crisa’s narration, I need to mention the fact that it is essential that this book’s narration is switched. Still, I miss Crisa very much and would like to know more about Crisa’s time on earth - hopefully this matter can be solved in the finale.

The plot thickens with an ambitious amount of classic fairy tale elements - the length of the story and the dual adventures on Daniel and Chance’s team enables the book to be inclusive with more classics - Oz (return), Wicked Sea Witch (great to see the Inero family again), Rumpelstiltskin, Mulan in Xanadu (surprised and happy to see Yunru), Swan Lake in Camelot (interesting choice, foreshadowed in the previous book?), Giants’ Keep (shoe houses are amusing), Alice in Wonderland (finally) and Toyland (also finally). This time the story is intensive and full of tension, which keeps me glued to the book.

I am captivated by the fully-fledged and strong characters in the story, this time SJ, Blue, Jason and Daniel grow more on me given that Crisa is not here. SJ is beginning to be more confident and empowered which I am impressed by her self-growth, like Crisa, she is one of my favourite characters in the series. Similarly, Jason is naturally amiable (as mentioned by Crisa in the second book) since he is Mr. Do-No-Wrong. However, his reaction to Blue’s harshness is not exactly right. But that is solved and there is actually a lot to learn from Jason, given that congeniality is like encoded to his DNA. I am relieved by how the later plot development turns out. On the other hand, I am taken aback by Blue’s flaws in the book despite the fact that her concerns are valid and understandable. But light exists in darkness and strengths shine amidst faults. I am glad that Blue has learnt her lessons and compensated for her wrongs, her realisation is something for readers to mull over. Likewise, Daniel has been through a lot in the book and changed accordingly. Like Crisa, he has improved. With the unrelenting lectures from (older) friends, he is able to strive for the better and I really appreciated that. Apart from that, I would like to learn more about the comatose allies in the story. Maurvey and Mark are so enigmatic that I look forward to their role in the finale.

One of the biggest appeals for me is the suspense and twists. I consider them as “long-awaited” because they are exciting and loose pieces of puzzle have been put in previous books. Perceptive readers would have anticipated the gists and got all worked up about them. I would say the connection and heartbreak are the biggest twists in the story, although I do not care for laying emphasis on love interests. Nevertheless, both are vital to plot growth and I suspect they will cause a huge impact on the finale. Therefore it is an element worth looking forward to.

As I have tirelessly emphasised, I feel that the author is remarkably strong at delivering inspiring messages. Through the Midnight Law test, many ideas are explored in this book. Above all, patience, respect, forgiveness and perseverance are the essential aspects of a strong bond. It highlights the present situation and also teaches the characters (and by extension, the readers) to grow. Without a doubt, these ideas motivate readers and make the story more refreshing. Additionally, it keeps the story going and puts Crisa and Daniel’s relationship to the foreground. Besides, Blue’s personal realisation should be put into consideration. People are stronger together and your counterparts will not belittle you. It is true that stereotypically romance is deemed to be our life’s “purpose”, and strong heroines are constantly fighting against this stigma. But love can be just a factor in your story that makes you stronger and shine brighter. That is some food for thought left by the author. Other than merely enjoying the book with its entrancing plot, I admire the story analytically and critically. I strongly believe there is much more to the book than the compelling story. I feel energised by its awe-inspiring charm and feel inspired by the book.

I passionately persuade everyone to read the eighth instalment of the Crisanta Knight series. I highly recommend people from all walks of life and all ages revel in the awesomeness of this book. Avid readers of fantasy will be thoroughly delighted by this book. Additionally, Harry Potter fans and readers of the School for Good and Evil will certainly be entertained by the captivating story. Without doubt, this book is a must-read along with other books in the series as they are all so well written and inspiring, never clichè nor mundane.

I hope you can find your way to read the series after reading this lengthy book review. I sincerely hope that you will savour the greatness of the book and love it as much as I do. I will never grow tired of praising its originality, mesmeric charisma and awe-inspiring quality. I would like to express my genuine thanks to the author for sharing Crisa’s story with us. You are an inspiration.

Plot: 9.5/10
Characters: 10/10
Entertainment Factor: 10/10
Writing: 9/10
Overall Rating: 9.75/10

When I started reading this, I didn't actually yet realize that Midnight Law was not going to feature the POV of Crisanta, the main heroine in this series. After getting to about the fifth chapter, I flipped through the rest of the pages to see if Crisanta's name ever came up anywhere and I was slightly disappointed to see that it didn't. From the first book, she had become one of my favorite book characters of all time, which is why I was at first a bit sad that I wasn't going to be reading her thoughts at all in this eighth book. However, now that I've finished the book, I can honestly sit back and say that there wouldn't have been a more perfect way to tell the story than through the POV of the amazing cast in this book. As I read, I began to fall more and more deeply in love with SJ, Blue, Jason, and Daniel as characters. It was really awesome getting to know them more intimately than we had before and all of their character development was just *chef's kiss*. My only complaint would be that it wasn't always easy to tell their narrations apart. But to me, that is honestly only a minor issue since I felt like their growth and personality was shown and was visible in other ways.

Further, I loved that we got see more of Mauvrey and Girtha as well, as well as a vast other people, such as Yunru, Lonna, Humilde, and more. In particular, I loved finally getting to know Mauvrey. She really stood out as an incredibly amazing and strong character and I'm really very excited to see where her story will take her, now that she'll have the freedom to grow into her own self.

Although I'm really not that surprised at , it still kind of hurt me to see it play out. While reading Midnight Law, the way I felt about her constantly changed from one chapter to the next. While she was acting like a complete and utter bitch about Crisa and Daniel's other friends, I did honestly sympathize with her at times. It must have been hard for her to see Daniel suddenly go off and accept the Midnight Law without even consulting her even though he could have died. My feelings about her were always on an up and down. However, I could never really shake the suspicious way she had been acting and I did mentally predict that she probably would end up being evil. When Mauvrey revealed what she knew about Kai, I literally jumped up and shouted "HA! I knew it!". And while I really dislike her as a character (she was just a really nasty person! eesh), I love that she is written to be a complex villain with a myriad of human reasons for why she did what she did. I do believe she honestly cares for Daniel, which is what makes the whole thing just majorly tragic.

Seeing the way Blue was tiptoeing around Jason in the first chapters was quite painful to read. I understood her reasoning for not wanting to be with him, and I admired her willingness to not just be defined by her romantic relationships. But it was so sad seeing her be so rude to Jason, as well as just generally deny her feelings. I loved the way that Jason eventually stood up to her, and his speech about respect and equality involving honesty and not just letting someone get away with stupidity was great. I wish them nothing but the best for the future.

There are probably a dozen more awesome things about this book and series in general that I could address but I think it suffices to say that I absolutely loved Midnight Law and am on the edge of my seat for the final book. I feel a bit like a hiker who just went on a really long and rewarding trail up a steep hill, who is just about the reach the top and final part of the hike. There is a sense of happiness and elation at finally getting to the top and seeing the view and enjoying the walking that has passed. But there is also a slight tinge of sadness that this journey will soon be over. For five years I have loved every bit of this series. It has also accompanied me through my early adulthood (ages 20 - 25), throughout which I, just like the fairytale heroines, had my own maturing to do. I'll be really sad when it will be over, but I'm also majorly happy to see how it all ends. And the good thing is that these books will always be on my shelf, ready to be reread at any moment.

I've been a huge fan of this series from the beginning and book 8 did not disappoint! Reading from the perspective of the rest of the gang was so interesting as we got to see how they think and how they think about each other. There were so many little details included that I adored (like I absolutely needed to know how Jason and Daniel prefer their peanut butter sandwiches cut.) I really appreciated each of their character development too. We've seen them all grow so much over the past seven books but of course no one is ever done growing and now we got to see their internal struggles. I loved getting to know Mark and Mauvrey better and how they will play a part in the end of this story. Obviously Blue and Jason FINALLY getting together gave me all the feels, but I think my fave part was Mauvrey and SJ figuring out who Kai really is and having to break it to Daniel. Talk about finally. Also can we talk about the giant picture of Crisa in Daniel's heart house? Seriously boy it can not be any more obvious. I honestly did not think I could love Daniel more but he had such great development in this book I can't get over it. If the whole book had been narrated by him, I wouldn't have minded 😆
Can't wait for the finale but also I don't know what I will do once it's over. This has become my favorite series so big thanks to Geanna for it!
I especially can't wait for the Crisa and Daniel climax that I have been waiting for since the moment they meant. This is the slowest burn romance I've ever read and I've loved every second of it. This was a very rambley review all to say that this book was great, the series is fantastic, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

as usual i adored geanna culbertson's storytelling, and this book was especially well-written, considering the four povs it was told through. while i really missed crisa, it was really amazing to watch other characters develop and grow too. mauvrey is definitely my new favorite character, and dude i love girtha, chance and mark so much too. the author's creativity never fails to amaze me, and the countless life lessons in this story blew me away too. the character developments these characters went through are just WOW, and while i can't wait for the next installation (also it cracked me up when blue borrowed the city of heavenly fire from a trio of bookworm girls) in the series, i also feel pretty sad about it, because i'd really hate to see this beautiful series end. crisanta knight is one of my favourite series of all time, and deserves so much more love. highly recommended, i swear you won't have any regrets!! p.s. my review wouldn't be complete without mentioning daniel and crisa, so can i just say that the friendships between these characters are just *chef's kiss* (when blue suggested that she and girtha double-team and girtha called her baby blue, i may have screamed, and that last chapter in daniel's pov was just so wholesome omg. also can't wait to hear more about natalie poole in the next book hwehe)

Honestly, I was a little hesitant about this book initially. I have come to love Crisa and her voice and typically don't like it when authors try to add different perspectives. Often times the characters sound like the same voice which is unrealistic and takes away from a story rather than adding to it. That all being said, I was extremely delighted to be proven wrong.
Every character had their own voice and their own conflicts to overcome while pursuing the same outcome in the end. Although I loved every characters voice and struggle, SJ was probably my favorite as her character is a huge inspiration in her growth. I also loved Daniel's journey although heartbreaking. And of course the romance everyone has been waiting for. Overall, the book is beautifully written with lots of action packed scenes and self discovery. Definitely recommend.

When I tell you I wept, I'm not kidding. I didn't think a story could be written about characters traversing just 24 hours in a day BUT THIS BOOK SHOWS YOU CAN LITERALLY GET IT DONE AND GET IT TO BE INTERESTING. I have so many favourite moments (although one of the major betrayals, I could see from a mile away) that I have read and re-read this book and highlighted my favourite bits just so I could re-read on bad days. Not a review, just a rave about how good this book is and how you should really start reading it now. Forever a fan XO

This is a very awesome book and brings a very awesome perspective to the book. Some things I was not very surprised by, like when Kai turned out to be working with the antagonists, or Jason and Blue ending up together. But when I started to feel bad for the sea which and Humilde I was a bit surprised. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish! I can't wait for the next book to come out! This book was so good! I loved how this book was told in multiple points of view! It was so cool getting to finally see inside all the character’s heads after only experiencing them through Crisanta! I won’t give away anything but the plot is excellent! I love how the friendships developed more throughout this book! If you love fairytale retellings then this series is the perfect series for you!

The book starts with what I've come to rely on... a very good prologue. After the events at the end of book 7, SJ has now taken over narration of the story and I could guess it was her even before she mentions her mother, Snow White. You do get other POVs later in the book too, and I really liked Jason's.

This was soooo good! A truly wild ride. More adventure than you could ever ask for, journeying through so many different wonderlands, even including the actual Wonderland. I love how we get some payoffs for things that happened previously or were mentioned early on in the series.

What a perfect ending line... now I'm awaiting the finale with equal parts excitement and dread that it will soon all be over!

This book was my absolute favorite in the series. I loved hearing the points of view from all the characters. Having Blue and Jason finally get together just made my day. SJ was great and I loved her interactions with Kai and Mauvery. Daniel finally figuring out what Crisa means to him is probably the best thing about this book. Can't wait for the finale!
