Book 2 in The Collision Series is a continuation of Collision, the emotional New Adult romance.
After the shocking ending of "Collision," Merritt Adams is now faced with the emotions she's buried for almost a decade. While her boyfriend goes off to fulfill his rock star dreams in California, Merritt is left to her own devices. She drowns her sorrows in alcohol, and spirals out of control. She’s headed down a familiar dark path – one that led her father to take his own life.
TJ Cutler is an MMA fighter who knows how dangerous inner demons can be. He may be the only person who can reach Merritt, having survived his own nightmarish childhood. But Merritt needs to prove that she’s willing to take responsibility for the choices she’s made, and commit to following TJ’s rules.
Merritt accepts TJ’s help, and starts making the right choices. But the road to recovery isn’t easy. She falters and breaks TJ’s trust, disappointing him and herself. The only way for Merritt to move forward is by confronting the ghost she’s been running from all along.
Will Merritt give up and lose, or will she get up and fight?
Kristen Granata is a bestselling romance author known for writing inspirational, emotional stories with realistic characters who struggle through the darkest parts of life and come out stronger on the other side.
Kristen openly shares her mental health struggles with depression and anxiety. Her message is a beacon of hope to anyone who is suffering: You are not alone. She delicately weaves this theme into her writing, and demonstrates the ability of love to heal after tragedy.
When she's not teaching or writing, Kristen is reading, tripping over something, indulging in her messy love affair with popcorn, and annoying her wife and step-daughters by incessantly singing along to The Greatest Showman soundtrack.
Kristen was born in Brooklyn, New York. She currently lives in New Jersey with her wife & her two step-daughters.
Loved it. This second book had me feeling all kinds of emotions. How the author developed these characters and led them through their journey of self discovery was just perfection. I have to admit, I wished there were 2 Merritts; one for T.J and one for Chase. (I loved T.J! I need his book too!!!) I’m excited to move onto ‘The Other Brother’ and read Tanner’s story. Kristen is my new one click author that’s for sure.
I keep saying this but.....OH MY GOD!!! I was a little bit disappointed in Collision when the storyline and certain aspects were lacking to me. But let me tell you folks, both my expectations and reaction were BLOWN. OUT. OF. THE. FREAKING WATER!! Merritt was SOOOO badasss in this book. She faced all her fears and finally, FINALLY became the daring woman she was meant to be. Watching her grow as person not only made me really proud but it also taught me a lot about growing stronger on my own. The distance from Chase was not only helpful to her as she learned to appreciate everything about him MORE- but it also helped ME as I came to better appreciate Chase's character himself.
One thing I still REALLY REALLY want after the end of this particular story is a book on T.J. and HIM finding someone cos I felt REALLY bad when I found out that he fell in love with Merritt. Someone who just could not give him what he deserved. And he deserves QUITE a bit ;)))
There are so many things I appreciate about this book. It’s not predictable and it’s not all hearts and flowers where everything just magically works out. Nope. Much like life, it’s a fight for growth and acceptance and love of oneself. Merritt is not your typical heroine, just like Granata is not your typical author. She’s so much more. There’s a great level of depth that makes Merritt’s journey emotional and satisfying for the reader. Beyond Merritt, I really liked a new character named TJ, who helps her overcome her situation, face the truth, and forgive the ones who hurt her. But at the end of the day, true love won and this novel has an uplifting happily ever after that will be sure to stick with me for years to come.
A M A Z I N G. This was the second novel in the series and honestly, I didn’t think it could get better than the first but it did. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, flipping the pages quickly to find out what was going to happen next. I think the ending was my favorite! I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a romance novel with flawed characters!
This is such a great story, I read it one sitting because I didn’t want to put it down. The characters grow and evolve and come in to their own in this story, it was a journey worth following.
A perfect sequel picking up right after the first book and that amazing cliff hanger. Beautifully written and detailed. Wonderfully paced. Just as amazing as the first book. The author continues to carve out her stories with such realism and honesty that the book is an immersive experience. Merrit struggles, and her biggest battle is against herself. The book reminds us that sometimes we can be our worst enemy. That, sometimes we need to look inward and focus on fixing ourselves when our lives are spiraling. Whether it's finding another outlet or finding understand in asking the hard questions and forgiveness in processed answers. Mental health issues and scars are not fixed over night. They take serious work to manage and heal; and Kristen shows that. I'd think that anyone dealing with such issues, may find some solace and hope within these pages. Kristen Granata has very quickly become one of my favourite authors.
Avoidance is a multi-layered sequel to the first book of the Collision series that ties together the story of Chase and Merritt beautifully. Merritt Adams finally overcomes the devastating loss she's endured in her life, and the journey to get there is truly satisfying in a way that warms your heart to the core.
Seeing Merritt progress from the darkest moments of her life to the highest makes for an uplifting read. The new character TJ is a great addition to the cast, and his presence enriches the story in a way that will have you wanting to keep turning pages.
The writing is top-notch and will have you feeling the heroine's emotions on an intimate level. Avoidance was a great read and I recommend it to those who love strong heroines and a plot that keeps you on your toes!
Kristen Granata - you are a wonder woman. How you are able to write so eloquently and beautifully is beyond me; but I'm so grateful and appreciative that you share your talent with the world.
Avoidance was the sequel to Collision (which I also loved) and had me feeling way too much! Man, did I cry. But wow, if I wasn't impressed by just how much I loved the next part of Chase and Merritt's story. It was so engaging and I was on the edge of my seat constantly. It didn't help that there was the introduction of the super hot and charming TJ.
I can't wait to finish the rest of the Collision series (the next two of which are standalones) and experience the awesomeness that Kristen comes up with.
Please never stop writing because I don't think I'd survive with these incredible romances!
This book took me a bit longer to get into and I’m not sure why because when I kept going back to it one day I finally just dove in. The one thing I love about this book is the real ness the author portrayed. Like couples go through shit and it takes a special connection to stick with it that person. But life if not all flowers and butterflies. Real relationships require work and lot of it especially when life is changing around you. It also takes a special author, I feel like, to portray emotions like Kristen does. To make sure every detail is hit so the reader can understand what that character is feeling but also make the reader feel that is special. And Kristen does it amazingly. I am a new reader to Kristen but you better believe I am going to go read all the rest of her books. I can tell she is a special kind of author that gets it.
Book 2 picks up right up from ending of Book 1. I L O V E D the sequel! My gosh, I was up on the sofa reading as fast as my eyes would let me. Meaning I was trying not to read ahead then come back, #wondering eyes!
I love that the characters are NOT PERFECT, flawed in their own best way. The realistic way anyone can relate to the story line and characters is off the charts.
I hate the fact that I can relate to Merritt, any woman really. When your greatest battle is, with yourself! Time heals? In this book you will realize that time only prolongs the memory, sometimes it does not heal...ever. This is a great example of struggle and overcoming. I think my absolute fav was the ending, I had to go back a few pages and re-read while reading because I didn't want to miss a thing!
5 STARS and highly recommended to read BOOK 1 before diving into this beauty.
What an excellent story! I’ll try not to give out any spoilers, but it will have a huge impact on most people who read this book. It was so emotional, heart breaking, uplifting, inspiring, overwhelming, gratifying, and unique. I cried and smiled often.
This is Kristen Granata's second story and the conclusion to Merritt and Chase. If you missed it, you can check out my review of Collision, the first in the two-part story, here. This story blew me away. I knew Kristen was going to make waves and this blogger feels she was right. This story was so beautifully written and touched me so much, it made some water appear in my eyes, or was that dust LOL.
Merritt was left with a shocker moment at the end of Collision. If you will remember, she wasn't my favorite person, but I love how big her heart is and how she cares. She really came into her own in this story. I love how she hit rock bottom and came out of it finding out that happiness is something that comes from within. Merritt ends up realizing forgiveness isn't for the other person, but for yourself. Since Collision she has risen to be one of my favorite heroines to date.
Chase the all American boy is fallible and we see how he has to learn the hard way what is important and that you can't force others to be happy. While reaching for his goal, I think he becomes blinded and loses sight of loving Merritt. He wants to think he's doing what's best for her, but in the end, he can only love her and let her decide where her happy is. He was more human in this story and no longer on the pedestal everyone felt he was on. I loved when the realization hit him of home, family, love, and Merritt. In the end, he was so proud of her. His love, patience, and belief in her were incredible to read.
We get to see more of Tanner in this story, even if it's just as a side character. I loved reading the sibling bond between him and Merritt. They both needed each other and had each other's backs. As an only child, I love finding stories where characters just click as siblings vs having actual siblings.
We meet a new character TJ in this story and his role is so important to Merritt. He goes to great lengths to pull Merritt out of her ass and her destructive path. I can't wait for his story one day (hint hint Kirsten)
Shelly and Brody are back along with new characters Dave, Brooke, and the bandmates. They all have their moments where they help Merritt, but also I feel destroy her too. It was great meeting them and Kristen did an excellent job of writing them all into the story seamlessly. As always Khloe adds to this story with her unconditional love and sweetness.
This story was so well done. The writing was phenomenal, and the plot fantastic. Writing this review makes me want to read it again. I give this story 5 pointe shoes, a coda, and standing ovation. Kristen Granata is an author to watch out for. She is definitely going places.
Hands down, one of my favorites this year. Kristen Granata, your storytelling is fuel. It's fire. It grips and doesn't let go even after you're done reading. I had the biggest book hangover after this duet. Merritt gutted me. She is such a beautifully complex character. Her demons are loud and unforgiving and the journey she takes to accept and overcome them is frustrating, heartbreaking, and so damn relatable. The strain, the distance, and this sort of limbo Merritt and Chase go through made me even doubt their relationship even though I knew they were meant to have their HEA. That's how brilliant the writing is. I read this far too quickly and I didn't want it to end. Both Collision and Avoidance are two books that will stick with me. I just felt the story down to my bones. I'm a huge fan.
Now, that said ...can we talk about TJ? Gah! He rocked me. I love Merritt and Chase but c'mon! I need more of TJ. He was just ...gaaaahhhh...everything you want in a book boyfriend. I need me some TJ, Kristen! All the TJ!
This right here... this was pure GOLD .... THATS HOW GOOD THIS FREAKING SERIES WAS!!
This book is so much more powerful than just any book, the meaning behind the plot, the characters, the level of realness that goes on is just perfect. Seriously, after I read the first book I instantly bought the sequel, and here I am not even half a day after finishing Collision, and I just finished Avoidance.
It's that good. And this is easily one of my favorite series I have read thus far.
I love a good romance story that isn't the typical "Oh I love you and lets live happily ever after"... this was so much more than that. It's relatable and so much more realistic that my respect for Kristen goes up to the roof. I can't wait for Tanner's story, I am so beyond excited because the Brook's brother will have my heart forever!!
THANK YOU KRISTEN!! I am now officially a huge fan of yours, and I appreciate this series so much because of the pureness written behind it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Received from the author for a honest review. Part 2 of The Collision Series, Avoidance) picks up right were book 1 left off. (Read book 1 before reviewing book 2) Merritt is ready to follow Chase’s dreams and avoid her past. But running away from your problems doesn’t alway work and lead to many more. Can Chase and Merritt make it work without forgetting what it took to get them there? Can Merrit find the strength in herself to trust and forgive? You must read to find out. ( I recommend reading book 1 first. It help hook me to continue this love story.)
I loved this book. I couldn't read it fast enough but didn't want it to end. Great story line that pulls you in on the first page and doesn't stop till the end. Loved all the characters that were carried over from "Collision" and the new ones that brings the story together. Cannot wait for more from this very talented author who is right up there with best.
Damn Kristen have you got me hooked on this series or what?!
I fell hard for Chase and Merritt in Collision so the next chapter to their story only bought me closer to them.
I will do my best to be spoiler free but Avoidance picks up where Collision ends. Merritt is distraught with her past being pulled back in front of her eyes and with Chase's future calling back in Cali, there are big steps to take.
Merritt does what she thinks is best. Running from her problems but that only starts to cause more harm that good putting her relationship with Chase at risk.
Trying to put herself back on the right path Merr makes a good decision to leave Cali and go home. Despite the ache in her chest it's what's for the best.
Chase and her have complications with communication but Merr is starting to get back on track when Tanner (Chase's brother) introduces her to MMA fighter TJ!
I loved TJ instantly he's a very lovable guy and I adored his role in this story to help be the therapist of sorts. He helps teach Merritt how to save herself and their friendship is beautiful.
This story took me on so many more highs and lows, that I wouldn't stop messaging Kristen like "are you for real? Haven't they been through enough?" And trust me it never gets easier even when you think it does.
A beautiful read and if I didn't know it was one of Kristen's first ever books she wrote I'd believe it was her hundredth.
A talented writer with an a amazing vision bought to life. A must read for my angst lovers!
Have I mentioned that I am obsessed with Kristen Granata? Because I totally am, her writing continues to blow me away and leave me begging for more. Her story telling is incredible and her voice is just so unique, her personality shines through on every page. Just like Collision I read this book in one sitting.

Okay so in Collision we are left with a huge Merritt cliffhanger, and we dive right back into that. Merritt would totally benefit from a good therapist, she definitely needs someone to dump all her baggage on and help her sort it into more manageable piles. That being said, her support system is out of this world. Merritt learns so much about herself, her past, and who she wants to be. It’s beautiful, her strength had me in awe. She was scared and did it anyway, truly a hero.
-
Chase has his own struggles in this book, he has conflicting dreams in a way and struggles to pick the one he wants most. He is still working through what he wants for his life and how to honor his late father while still doing right by his family. I don’t envy the guy, he has a lot on his plate and his relationship with Merritt has struggles as well.

While this book didn’t leave me as emotional as Collision, I was just in awe of Merritt and Chase’s growth, not only as a couple but as individuals. This book is not a light and fluffy read but it will definitely make you feel good. It is like watching your closest friends accomplish their dreams and grow into better humans.
Merritt and Chase are just utter perfection, they are so happily in love and I was just swooning at how perfect for each other they were. Then after the first book with her mother returning after 8 years, I was worried for them. I saw how Merritt caved in on her self and was avoiding any and all things that involved her deep unresolved heartache. Once they left for California I was excited for them, they both seemed so happy and ready for that next chapter, then things changed and i felt the devastation of it all right along with them. This books are so beautifully written I truly forgot I was reading a book and wasn't sitting there next to Merritt in bed crying my eyes out too. I was so emotionally involved in this book, it practically wrecked me. Once Merritt met T.J. I was excited for a new chapter, a fresh start, a way to fix the brokenness and heal. I loved every bit of this book, I loved it even more than the first. Watching Merritt grow and find herself was so satisfying. I was so proud of her (again I forgot I wasn't a part of this book). I felt like these characters are so well defined that I knew them personally, I felt like I was just as close to Merritt as Shelly, like I had been there through it all and dealt with everything with her. I loved this book so much! Thank you Kristen for your amazing writing!
Side note: I fell in love with Tanner, can we please have his story? I feel like there is so much more to him than what we got to see and I want more of him! T.J. too!!
Is it crazy for me to hope I run into TJ being that I’m a New Yorker and don’t live too far from Staten Island??? Sigh... one could dream.
Merritt Adams has gone through so much in her young life. In book one she had to overcome so much to find happiness and then boom, she gets sucked back down the rabbit hole. In that hole is where she wants to give up. In that hole is where she chooses to live and fight. All the struggles and emotions going through Merritt were felt. All of it coursed through my body - a talent that author Kristen Granata excels at. She allows her readers to truly understand, or at empathize, with the flawed characters she writes. It’s amazing and scary because she has that power over you. I don’t think there’s been a story by this author that hasn’t made me cry. But I digress...
Feeling worthy of goodness and happiness is tough when you’re constantly being knocked down. I’m so grateful that Merritt was able to see her worth and fight for her happiness. Yes, this is a love story, but to me, it was more than that. It was a new beginning for Merritt. And while I love Chase so much, he takes a back seat here because my girl deserves the spotlight. So while this is the conclusion of Chase and Merritt’s story, it’s also the beginning. I hope they pop up in Tanner’s book.
And getting back to TJ... I LOVE him. I wish I hated Chase so that TJ would get the girl but Chase and Merritt belong together. I cannot wait to get to TJ’s story, though. I’m jealous of the lucky lady already.
Story:8/10 Spice: 1/5 Spice Hierarchy: Open Door Narration: 4/5
This duet follows Merrit after she is pulled from her car accident and spend two weeks in a coma. It has reverse grumpy/sunshine, friends to lovers, found family, and mental health rep.
Typically I prefer dual POV but for this duet it worked to have just Merrit’s side. In Collision, Merrit really learns to allow others to be there for her and with her. After losing so much, she finds a family. And who wouldn’t want to be family with Chase Brooks. In Avoidance, I loved Merrit’s willingness to put her health first for awhile. Merrit’s growth through this duet is so well done. Her character development and story arc make her so relatable.
These are Kristen’s first two novels and I am enjoying going back to her backlist. Her ability to write mental health representation is truly unlike any other author.
I love Chase. But T.J. had me second guessing my loyalties.
The first half of this book had me a bit sad, and I was worried that thing weren't going to end up the way I wanted them to. But then in walks T.J. and I didn't know if I even wanted them to anymore!
Granata does it again - writing so well that I was immediately wrapped up in this book. Her characters are so well written and real, and relatable. You want to know them, and you feel like you really do love them. She can tell one heck of a story, and I can't wait to continue reading more from her.
Every emotion feels real, palpable, and I relate to everything these people go through. Heartache, not feeling good enough, thinking you need to walk away, and then learning to love yourself and recognize that you are enough. It's such an important message, especially for women. And I love how well that comes through in this book.
T.J. was amazing, and I wanted more and more from him, but my favorite part was seeing Merritt grow and learn and be better for herself. I loved this book just as much as the first one. And I will be diving right into book three.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm going to be honest, I generally don't have high hopes for sequels, they're usually my least favorite out of any series....... That being said, this is the second time this year that a sequel has BLOWN ME AWAY. . There are so many big topics covered in this book, it makes you feel EVERYTHING. It breaks your heart and puts it back together. . I LOVE Merritt for the warrior that she is. . I LOVE her and Chase together. . I LOVE her relationship with Tanner (honestly one of my favorite relationships) . I LOVE Beverly and Khloe and Shelly and Dave, basically everyone in this book (I didn't always love them, I had beef with quite a few of them but they generally made up for it in the end) . And I got to meet TJ, my forever book boyfriend who has ruined me for all other book boyfriends. ❤️Swoons❤️ . 10/10 recommend reading this series
I mostly skimmed the middle half of the book. Merritt is a hot mess and frustrating to read because while logically, I get it, she is only about 21/22 years old and has a decade of trauma to unpack, it's hard to like and root for her while she destroys every relationship in her life with her issues. I don't fully believe that Merritt and Chase would have a 'til death do us part kinda HEA, but I do believe that irl Chase and Merritt would have a long-term relationship (HFN).
I admit that I only skimmed a big chunk of the book, but I did pay more attention to the TJ chunks and while I totally get how other readers wanted Merritt to choose him, I don't feel that it was ever written in a way to make it seem like she had any more feelings towards him than she does Tanner (Chase's younger brother).
This book was hard (emotionally) for me to read because it touched on subject matter that I deal with within my own family. However, I still really enjoyed this book and was happy with the ending. But poor Merritt, can anything else bad happen to her. She hasn't had it easy for sure. And even though I loved Chase in book 1, I was kinda of rooting for T.J. and I don't even feel bad about it. Will T.J. perhaps get his own book later? I am looking forward to reading book 3 in this series, The Other Brother, since I want to see some good things happen for Tanner. At least, I hope it's good things.
This was the perfect follow up to Collision! I absolutely loved this sequel! I read it in one sitting, that’s how hooked I was with this story! I love Chase and Merritt and can’t get enough of those two. In this book we’re able to see just how much their relationship can withstand and although they were apart for some of the book, the ending made it all worth it!
Merritt has a lot of issues to work through in this sequel and you really get a front row seat and get to see how she works through her healing with her new hobby, boxing. I LOVED that she took up boxing, it’s actually something I’ve considered taking up to work through some tough emotions, so I really enjoyed getting to see how much it helped her not only work through issues, but how it helped her to grow as a character.
Also, side note, can I just say how much I love TJ!? Please tell me that he might get his own book?!
I’ll end this review by saying that the ending of this book was wonderful. By the time you reached the end, you could just see how much Chase and Merritt grew as a couple, how much Merritt has overcome and grown as an individual, and how much the entire family has grown and overcome after losing a very important family member in the first book, Collision.
Oh My this book was awesome! The first one was good, really good A sweet love story of a girl getting her life back with all the emotions but this one... This book was Merritt fighting for her life and fighting for herself. I loved it watching her strength grow from her past, learning from her mistakes. I thought we were losing the original love story but NOPE it was just a part of her battle. There is a someone in this book I felt bad for and would love to see him get his own HEA. Seeing the next one is about Tanner the brother has me excited because the synopsis of that one is how I found this series.
Avoidance is the sequel to Collision by @kristen_granata and totally surpassed my expectations. I am in complete awe of this author and the way she can capture you from the first page and have you clinging to every word. Merritt is such a strong woman who has gone through so much and yet learned to love and move forward. This book keeps you at the edge of your seat, makes you feel anger, sadness, and happiness. Another must read so be sure to put in your TBR list, you won’t regret it
