An exiled battlemage, once the most powerful warrior of her people, has wandered alone for twenty years in a world that despises magic—because magic broke the world during a brutal war long ago.
She keeps to the shadows, hiding her true nature, doing small services in a lonely effort to right that great wrong and to ease her own guilt.
Over the years, she’s become a legend, a mysterious hero known only as the Rider.
When an old evil rises again, she’s called to save the world from the very same forces that broke it.
Only the Rider knows the danger she poses to the people who call her hero.
I’m a native Midwesterner transplanted to Northern California, where I live with my husband, youngest son, and assorted cats.
In my day job, I’m an English professor, so I’ve made books and reading my life. I read widely across most genres and, of course, literary fiction and the classics. Taking the leap to write my own fiction and put it out in the world, though—it took me a long time to work up that courage.
I started publishing my own fiction in the romance genre, because that was where my muse took me, and I still write and publish regularly there, under the name Susan Fanetti, with several popular series of MC romance, contemporary romance, and historical romance. But as a reader, my primary interests have always been science fiction and fantasy. I’m especially a fan of writers like Margaret Atwood, Octavia Butler, Neil Gaiman, N.K. Jemisin, Ursula K. Le Guin, George R.R. Martin, and Neal Stephenson. I’m excited to be writing in the SFF world now, with my first post-apocalyptic novel, Aurora Terminus.
My primary focus in any story I write, whatever genre, is the characters. They drive everything about my stories. I want you to know them as well as they know themselves, to care about them like you care about the real people in your lives, to feel their pain when they struggle, their grief when they mourn, and their joy when they overcome. As a reader, I love books that transport me in just that way, even if they break my heart, and as an author, I want readers to feel that same investment when they read my stories.
What an epic journey that has begun!. A fantasy that truly delivers all things magical, jam packed full of unique and exciting new characters, new lands.
The Party - Rider, Xian, Mya, Callyn, Benon, Arados. (The Crone) I was invested in each and every one of them.
Vulas = Trouble.
Location 5565 what a beautiful gesture, I fell in love with Rider that much more.
Xian is mine.....the ending was perfect, oh, that Benon, he is a handful.
I will be waiting patiently for book 2. (Thank you S.F ♡).
This was a good fantasy story and the beginning of a new series. There's quite a bit in this book and all I'd do is repeat the description. If you enjoy fantasy give this a try. The story is very character driven. The book doesn't end on a cliffhanger per se but it does end in a rather tough spot and the reader doesn't know where the heroine is or if she's safe.
A really good start to a new series. Susan Fanetti did a great job world building and developing strong characters. Not just the 2 main ones, but the side characters are good, too. My only hang up is all the stumbling I did with such odd pronunciation of names, cities...etc. It would draw me out of the story because I'd have to stop and try to grasp the name/town. Heck, half the time I doubt I was pronouncing them right. This is a book that I think the audio would be a better fit for me. I'm invested in the story and will continue on when book 2 comes out.
Ahhhh I need to know what happens next! This was a very enjoyable fantasy story written by my favorite author! This book is written in different POVs which I loved. There are so many parts to this book and the ending left me in a tailspin with so many questions about what happens next. The Rider is a kick ass female! I adore Xian and can’t wait to see what Mya’s role will be. 🤗
This book took me a while to read. Things in my life didn't allow the amount of focus required while learning a new world so I had to take it slow. But it was worth it. Ms Fanetti has once again woven a story that pulls you in.
