Start with the Vision: Six Steps to Effectively Plan, Create Solutions, and Take Action

Rate this book
Start with the Vision introduces a powerful planning process called the Six-Step Process that will help any person or team navigate change, create solutions, and develop an actionable plan. A person can take any challenge or opportunity and use the Six-Step Process to create a clear path forward. When challenges arise, most people start with the problem, which is the exact wrong place to start. Instead, the Six-Step Process will shift the focus away from the problem to the best starting point – the vision! Then, in the subsequent steps of the Six-Step Process, you will develop a clear action plan to help you achieve your vision. This easy-to-use process has helped hundreds of people and organizations achieve massive results. Below are some comments from people who have used the Six-Step “We finally figured out a way to take our manufacturing from 16,000 units a day to 32,000 units a day!” “Our marriage was on life-support. The Six-Step Process gave me and my husband a clear plan to bring the fire back in our marriage. This process literally saved our marriage!” “Each of our sales rep used this process to increase their average sales by more than 70%!” “For years, I couldn’t figure out how to improve my health. The missing ingredient was a vision and a plan. The Six-Step Process helped me FINALLY achieve my health goals, and I feel better than ever!”

The book is more of a self-coaching guide. What I liked about this book is that it is written in a very simple and easy to understand manner. Anyone could use this as a reference guide and use it to coach themselves when they are stuck in an issue and are looking for answers. The templates at the end of every chapter will help you structure your thoughts and think through the problem at hand.

The not so interesting part is there is nothing new about this concept. I see this as a slightly enhanced version of the GROW (Goal, Reality, Options and What Will you Do) model of coaching. Starting the process by creating your Vision as the first Step is the additional part added here and the last sixth step is what happens in any coaching engagement where you would sit with your coach and review your action items on a periodic basis.

While I would recommend this book as a good reference book, people familiar with coaching and especially with the GROW model will find nothing new here. To get my point, I would suggest reading "Coaching For Performance" by Sir John Whitmore.

Guides the reader to develop an actionable plan, starting with the desired vision instead of the problem. Excellent resource for goal setting and developing a design culture. Seems inspired by the six sigma process. Took a star off because it is a short book for what it is and some of the stories included seemed like fillers.

Excellent book.

A simple strategy on actually achieving your goals. The author uses relevant case scenarios to show how the methodology applies to personal and professional challenges/goals/problems.

A fast read of very good and practical guide

This is the book I like. Not unnecessarily long, with clear methodology and illustrating examples. It will be well worth two hours of your time.

3/5 Stars This was fine. Nothing earth shattering, just a good reminder and helpful reset for collective problem solving.

This book has changed my perspective on approaching projects at work as well how to make changes in my personal life. It used plain language a a variety of practical examples to explain the concepts. What I liked about the concepts is that it reframes the problem in a positive way. Starting off with the vision instead of solving problems should lead to less resistance. I lead a project based team and this book is getting added to the onboarding process of new team members. All current team members will be required to read it and apply to all current projects.
