USA Today bestselling author, D.E. Chapman is a fantasy novel addict that reads them as much as she writes them, often pretending to be her characters. After all, life is infinitely more exciting with magic and dragons. She hopes to one day write a book so fantastical that it creates a portal to another world. But beware, not all she writes is sunshine and happy endings. There are darker stories hiding within the depths of her mind, filled with mature content and twisted themes, so tread with caution!

I received a free ARC (advanced reviewer's copy) of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest review.

My first stumbling block for this was picking up volume 2, which launches directly off the series premiere. There's a catch up so you don't get too lost but none of the characters or history are reintroduced formally, so it's pick up and run. The second was... first person perspective. This is a pet hate of mine and I've found that almost universally I will detest it. Generally I check samples to ensure I stay away, but with an ARC there may be no preview text.

I'm going to go ahead and say (without being too negative ) that it's very very simple, direct, uses few descriptors and sounds very much like a fourteen year old narrating using speech to text. There are no elegant or memorable turns of speech, and it's essential a low-level stream-of-consciousness from the lead. Other characters don't get much to say or do except react through expressions as she saves(?) the world. Dialogue includes gems like "...actually we got a power up it seems." and 'F***' as a complete non-dialogue sentence. And over reliance on "*external narration then* and I say as much." without actually writing any dialogue. Off-handedly telling you they said something without even going to the effort of saying it, it's quintessentially tell, don't show.

Oh, there is no romance. At all. There is some animalistic mating at times when the urge is on them, but no emotional bonding, sharing, trust or investment. Bookended by rape and torture, because... why not? I don't see any real 'herum' material here just a bunch of guys tagging along behind Fate and f****** her and each other because... why not? (yes, yes, 'the bond' etc...) I do read instalove/destined mating and it's a fun genre, but this isn't it.

I like the idea and I see the attraction of something much like the Black Jewels trilogy, but this misses the mark for that bar. It does have pace and rockets along in a fairly wild adventure but just lacks the depth and introspection that would make feel more involved in the character and the world. I actually ended up rooting for the black mages in the end and was disappointed when they lost.

I'm not even going to go into the plot holes and inconsistencies. Just binge and enjoy this operatic blood and guts guilty pleasure. An extra half star for pace and vim, cracking along the plot (and heads), but this isn't my cup of tea. I may be about thirty years too old and the wrong gender.

The first book felt like these guys took all Fate's free-will away by magically binding her, almost enslaving her. I understand that that was not what the author wanted to have seen what was going on, but she was a proud dragon that was taken advantage of during a time of weakness and these human men bound her magic. She kept stating enough times about how she was waiting for a Fated dragon mate that it felt like she was magically shackled, a slave to them. She couldn't even morph between animal forms unless they let her. The thing that bothered me was how quickly the author weakens her character by having her give in to these men to move the story along.
In this story, there is more of the same overly convoluted plot. This time they are still trying to find another guy to magically bind and shackle her. Why is it taking almost 2 books to find this guy?? And why is a once proud dragon okay with humans holding power over her? I just don't understand it. I read a lot of dark romance but I don't understand when characters do something that is against their innate characters. Just runs me the wrong way

This book picks up right where book one left off. It's been a while since I read book one so it took me a second to remember what had happened before but once you get started you won't be able to stop.

Fate finally learns what's in stored for her. She isn't sure she's the right being for this task but she won't shy away from it if it means she can put a stop to the disease spreading throughout her world. But they must still have to find the third in the triad that her mates are a part of and that doesn't turn out the way she thought it would. Nothing does but still, that won't stop her from doing what's necessary. A great end to this duet. You will enjoy all the surprises that's in stored for all our characters.

This book continues Fate's journey with her men. I will say that it's important for you to read book 1 first though. There are lots of fantasy elements to the book to make it interesting but I sometimes wished some of it was explained. There was plenty of things happening to keep the book moving along. HEA.

This story is well written. So many characters and each brings their unique personality that makes the story so much better. fate has her mates and each one is different. The groups responsibility is to save the word from the gloom and the evil that it brings.

This is a good read and continuation of Fate's journey. It is an entertaining read. I did feel like while detailed some parts could have used more, while others use less. This is a darker read that does warrant its trigger warning.

Fate has her hands full trying to fight the gloom. Can she figure what to do or will pride bite her in the rear.
