This book - I just can't say enough about it. So many things came together in the story and I was there with Nora as she struggled with love, faith, responsibility, family and expectations.

What an epically, amazing journey this trilogy has been! The Frost Eater hooked me, The Vine Eater brought me closer to each of the lovely characters, and The Stone Eater drove it home in a way only Carol Beth Anderson could achieve. It was everything I could have hoped for, and she even managed to make me support some pairings I didn't think I could get behind. A fantastic finish! Bravo.

I'm so glad I reread this series! I really enjoyed getting back into these books and reconnecting with the characters Anderson created. The story is just so creative, even down to the little things, like animals that people use for transportation being called orsas, which is obviously a corruption of horses, which makes sense thousands of years after people from Earth settled on Anyari. It's also cool how animals have changed or how Anyarian animals are represented. I just love the details in these books.
I also appreciate how the story wraps up. It builds to an impressive climax, and even though there are several deus ex machina (machinae? not sure of the plural), there are also enough moments when things don't go right to balance it out a bit. At least the resolution doesn't happen so quickly, like it often does in action books. And I love the ending of the book and of the epilogue. My only note this time around is that there is much more of a focus on the romance in the second two books than I remember there being compared to book one. I think I was so caught up in the story that I didn't notice it as much, but I definitely feel like there was overkill with . However, all the pairings make sense in the end, and I love that Sarza remains asexual (not a spoiler because it's an important detail about her character from her introduction in book 2) and forms a unique bond of her own with someone. Oh, and . And one more thing--I appreciate the way Anderson handles addiction. It's an important topic, and she shows us how the addicts feel about themselves and represents different ways people in their lives react to them but ends with sympathy, support, and understanding. I think that's really important.
Overall, once again, I really enjoyed these books, and I strongly recommend them!

There are so many things I want to say about this series, so I'll probably end up saying nothing.
I loved it so much--I loved the characters, the world-building, the plot, the conflicts, everything.
I'm so happy with the ending.
I've enjoyed living in this world with the characters over the past three books. This is one of my favorite series, all time, now. I can't wait to read The Seer's Sister and find out more about Anyari, Pre Day. I also just can't wait to be in this world again.
I love the chapter headings in each book--first the background on Anyari, then the Pre Day information, then the letters from Ambrel to Dani and how it all ties into the main story. Anderson is so clever, and I can't imagine the time she spent with the details of this world.
I also have to say this is one of the best-edited series I've ever read--grammatical errors, typos, inaccuracies, contradictions, everything is so tight, it's amazing because the reader can just read and enjoy the flow of the story.
I can't say enough good things about this series. I loved everything about it. I strongly recommend it. Probably my favorite thing about it is that it combines fantasy with sci-fi, post-apocalyptic tropes, and dystopian qualities as well. But I love the characters, the plot, the conflict, everything. I'm being repetitive now and probably didn't say anything, as I expected. Sigh. Just read this series!

Hot damn

Now THAT’S how you conclude a series! I loved every page of this and each page built and built and built until it came to a head in the most wonderful way! It builds on the previous books brilliantly while also having its own conflict and needs!

The pacing is on point in this one. You’ll find yourself making excuses to read just one more page, one more chapter. It’s all well worth the sleep you lose!

The relationships in this one are so beautiful. I adore how they naturally develop and each one has its own beauty and I fully believe and am infested in each!

I can’t wait to dig into her other books!

Even after reading the first three books, I am still surprised by the uniqueness of the magic system and by the ability of the author to keep expanding on it. I got a lot of new insights in where the magic comes from and how it works and there seem to be a lot of different aspects that contribute to the magic and that can influence it. It was really interesting. Sometimes certain abilities seemed to be used as a convenience to further along the plot though, but it was still really interesting.

Not only did the magic expand, but the worldbuilding also got even more immersive. New territories were explored: farmlands, cities, forests,... There was never a dull moment and always something new to discover. New surroundings, new people and new fantastical creatures. There were some interesting characters that were introduced and that contributed a lot to the story, though I also found that one character was there just as a tool to solve some plot points. That is why this story didn't get the full 5 stars from me, but I still had a blast while reading this.

The romance aspect in this last instalment was a bit more present that in the previous books. I personally didn't expect the focus to be as much on the romance, but I did enjoy how everything turned out in the end. There is some sapphic representation throughout the series and I really liked seeing that. Overall, it was a really great reading experience for me.

Nora and her friends journey throughout this book is one that will have the reader eager to turn the next page and see how the choices made in The Vine Eater play out. Her father's continued descent into madness and control forces Nora to make choices that she would prefer to avoid, but that is the cost of ruling. First she needs to accept this and then convince others that a war may be justified. In bringing her country together, Nora will make new friends and enemies.

Also, we finally learn what caused the King to turn away from his people and focus on gaining power. Nora needs to learn from his mistakes and move forward, but at what cost?

Who said Teen and Young Adult books were only for Teens and Young Adults? This 65 plus year old has read the entire trilogy. Fantasy, Magic, Love, and even Dragons all in this series. Come along for the adventure as Princess Nora grows into the Queen she needs to be. You will be right there with her as she struggles through her development as a Young Woman and as a Leader.

This is a book you will not want to put down until you finish that next chapter, then the next chapter and so on. You will not be disappointed.

Nora and her friends have come a very long way since the first book. Now they have built allies and made numerous plans but whether they are strong enough to defeat the King is still in question.
Throughout the book there are snippets of letters from Nora's mother. It was lovely to get something from her perspective, as a young girl meeting her possible future husband, the King. It's quite a long book but you do feel like there is always something happening and you get invested in the lives of the characters.
I really have to sympathise with Sarza's character in the book. Considering the huge job they have, trying to overthrow a mind controlling, super-powerful King, most of the other characters do spend a hell of a lot of time talking about their girlfriends and boyfriends. If they cut out most of the love angst I would have enjoyed the book a lot more.

*Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book and am leaving an honest review* Wow. This book was a great end to a wonderful series! I love the world Anderson created in these books with magic, history, and dragons. The MC Nora has come so far since book one, she's grown up, experienced life, made friends, and found love. The relationship dynamics changing between Nora and her friends and her trying to figure out if a queen can have friends were all well done and showed her internal struggle while she was dealing with the larger problem of getting the crown out of the hands of her father who was descending into madness. I was glued to the pages as Nora tried to gain followers, went through heart break, and had to decide what she would do once she confronted her dad. All the while I enjoyed getting more tidbits about this world and the magic in it. I've really enjoyed this series and am sad it is over, but also think this book was a very well done conclusion for it. Highly recommend the series if you enjoy fantasy books with magic, dragons, action, amazing world building, and strong friendships.

After following these characters through two incredible novels in this YA post-apocalyptic fantasy series, I was eager to see how everything would turn out in this final book. As always, Carol Beth Anderson delivers an incredible story full of complex characters and some fantastic emotional payoff for everything that's been building up so far. The magic system remains one of the highlights of the story, but the characters are truly what pull you in and keep you invested from start to finish.

One of the things I was most looking forward to after finishing book 2 was seeing how certain relationship dynamics between characters might play out, and we definitely got that in The Stone Eater. Although I was super heartbroken about some of the choices that were made with those relationships at first, by the end, Anderson brought everything together in a way that felt satisfying and very much earned. The romantic subplots in these books have always been very nuanced, full of emotional highs and lows that consistently pull at my heartstrings, and that's more true than ever in this book. The last quarter or so of the book had me choking up because of the expert care Anderson puts into writing those relationships and pushing her characters to grow and change through them.

The Stone Eater also gives us a closer look at the man himself, King Ulmin, who has been a formidable opponent for our heroes over the course of the series—in no small part due to the fact that he's also our heroine's father. I loved the little snippets of letters we got at the start of each chapter that provide a glimpse into what Nora's parents' early relationship was like and the man King Ulmin used to be. We also get several chapters from his point of view, allowing us to see how much he's changed and some of the driving motives behind his actions. This is never used as a way to excuse or justify his actions, but rather to help us understand how a great man could fall so far. It humanizes him in a way we don't often see with powerful antagonists in YA fantasy and I really appreciated the care Anderson took with his chapters and his storyline. It was fascinating and heartbreaking and really added to the emotional stakes of the main conflict.

Anderson is clearly a fantastic storyteller and with this series has become one of my favorite indie authors. I listened to this and the previous book on audiobook, narrated by the author herself, and the performance was excellent. If you're an audiobook reader, that version is worth checking out. I'm sad to say goodbye to these characters but I appreciated the journey every step of the way, and I can't want to see what Anderson writes next. If you haven't already read this series and you enjoy YA fantasy, you definitely need to give it a read.

The Stone Eater was a fantastic conclusion befitting Anderson’s amazing series. While I greatly enjoyed the previous two installments, this one was riveting on a whole new level. The pacing was perfect with plenty of intense action, steamy romance, and quiet moments of reflection. There was a single moment where I didn’t want to keep going to find out how these characters I’ve come to love turn out.

Out of all the elements of this series to be appreciated, it’s the character development I most value, and The Stone Eater shows just how far each and every cast member has come. Nora goes from a spoiled, somewhat flighty princess to a responsible leader, willing to make any sacrifice if it means doing right by her people. Mr. Cynical himself, Krey, learns to trust others and himself on a whole new level, opening some exciting paths for this character (who happens to be my favorite, and whose development went where I’d been hoping it would since book 1). Ovrun opens his eyes to what he truly wants for his future for the first time, and what that means. Zeisha, who didn’t know who she was for most of the last book, fully comes into her own here in a big way. Each character grows into who they were meant to be, and their endings were wholly satisfying.

Along the way, the author handled the conflicts both large and small beautifully. Among the big battles with clever strategies and high-stake action, there were also smaller, personal conflicts with deeply emotional ramifications. Delicate matters were handled with care, making them all the more poignant. Acceptance, love, forgiveness, and compassion were the threads weaving all the plot points together in an incredible tapestry of storytelling.

Anderson clearly has a gift, and with this series, has certainly become one of my favorite authors. I
can’t wait to delve into another one of her books soon.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review of it. Boy was I lucky. It's always great when it is an amazing book. I suspected it would be and I was not disappointed.

In some ways this is a harsher book than the other two in the series. More action, more relationships, more evil tyrant on stage, and more action (yes, there's so much it has to be mentioned twice). Not all of it happens in a way every reader will like. You may find yourself foaming at the mouth or cringing in your toes. Hang in there and wait to see how it all turns out. At the end you will NOT be disappointed - but you may have chewed and/or swallowed your fingers. Should you still have fingers at the end, please tweet/share/post/review it and help spread the love (and aaaauuuugggghhhh Nooooo!!!! & Booooo Yaaaahhhhh!!!!).

This book wraps up all the tangled threads of relationship from the last two, plus adding more angst and complications. Things about the world get explained. Things about powers are hammered out. And a lot more is added to the mythos and magic of this tremendous place.

The action is balanced, at times brutal but not visceral, and always exciting. There is the usual stupid decisions and unexpected wise moves you expect from YA because how else do your characters grow?

If you're like me, you'll read it in near one sitting. If you're not your heart is stone and you should seek medical attention immediately. This book is a warm read, a teeth clencher (it's a word if I say it is), and something to wrap yourself in again and again. It will make you want to re-read the series just to see all the depth and foreshadowing Carol Beth Anderson has woven throughout.

I think it is a triumph and everyone should take a chance on it.

I’m still processing everything that happened in this book. And it was a lot!
This was a great book. Great story, great writing, great cover (I really like all the covers in the series!). I was expecting a great end to a series. I got it. And more!
Interesting, important things to think about, lots of things to highlight and underline, difficult relationships, lovable yet sometimes stupid characters, more dragons, unicorns (I think I highlighted every time they appeared because I was so excited!), more magic, battles and their aftermaths and I could go on for a long while.
The author made some unexpected bold choices and, although it took a while to get used to them, I think I agree the story was better this way. Also, more close to real life in a way because the unexpected happens and not everything that ends in a pretty bow starts that way.
This is probably a little ramble-y but it is because I really liked the book so much.
I listened to most of this in audiobook and read the rest. The book is read by the author and, if you listen to audiobooks, you should give this one a try because it was really well done and gave even more life to the story.
All in all, a very good book in all aspects you could ask for. I’m seriously pondering ordering physical copies of the whole series so I could have them all and have another excuse to read everything again. Also, I’m chastising myself for not having read the prequel yet. I think I just don’t want the series to end.

I received an ARC of this book as well as an audio copy from the author. All opinions are freely given and my own.

Welcome to the epic conclusion to the Magic Eaters series!

I loved this entire series. This final book was so wonderful! It was exciting, revolting, romantic, scary, beautiful, and funny. It has wonderful pacing; I never felt like it was moving too fast or too slowly. If you love new worlds, this series has tons to show you about how it works. If that's not your jam, you don't really need to get all of the new terms to understand and appreciate the story. That's a huge accomplishment on Beth's part. Creating a new world, but not requiring full immersion to be welcomed into the story.

It is perfect for readers of young adult, science-fiction, and urban fantasy lovers. It has romance but not sex. As always, the editing is on par with, or better than, traditionally published novels. I read this book as a member of the ARC team, but am leaving an honest review because it is honestly that good!

The Stone Eater is the final book of The Magic Eaters Trilogy by Carol Beth Anderson. This is the exciting ending of Nora’s journey to take the crown from her maniacal father. There is romance, action, dragons, magic, and so much more! The author keeps you in suspense as Nora and her friends struggle to build a resistance while her father’s cruelties continue to mount against his citizens. Will they be able to withstand his mind control? Will they be able to convince others to follow a young princess? Can a queen have friends?
I give this book and this series 4 of 5 stars and 2 thumbs up for fans of sci-fi fantasy young adult fiction. It is a unique concept in a genre that is needing fresh material! The characters are well developed and the story is engaging.

I loved this book so much it was the perfect finale to an amazing trilogy. I loved all of the characters even more in this final book relationships changed and blossomed so well. I loved Nora and Krey most of all their relationship changed at a slower pace but I was glad when they finally got together by eighty percent into the story. I loved Nora for her strength of character and how by the end her and Krey were perfect for each other I loved the ending so much. The plot was really good it was non stop action and strife they fought until the day was won. So overall I loved this book and will read more by this author for sure.

The magic contained herein enthralled and enriched my personal reading experience. I have followed the lives, loves and struggles of these characters and watched as they battled, good vs evil to a thrilling conclusion. If you want a series that will capture your full attention and leave you wanting for more, look no further.

Where do I begin? So much happened that I’m still reeling from everything. Nora and the gang went on a amazing journey. While their characters may be a bit young they are very mature and level headed characters and I appreciated it. The unique world that the author created was just wonderful to me. The talents that everyone has is just amazing. I loved how Nora and Kray bonded in the library and it was great learning more about gifts. It was a great conclusion and I loved how everything came together nicely. I loved the ending. The narrator did a fabulous job portraying the characters. Easy to listen and follow.

What a beautiful end to the trilogy. I love Nora’s compassion for her Dad, treating him well in confinement when many would say he doesn’t deserve it. I had actually completely forgotten about Dani so I was very pleased to be reminded of her (the memories flooded back immediately!) and have her story wrapped up. I absolutely loved Ambrel’s letter’s to Dani, they were very insightful to the earlier Ulmin.

A couple of my favorite quotes:
“Congratulations, Krey, you’ve managed to make an otherworldly, magical artifact sound totally disgusting.”
“Every dethroning coalition should have a fire-breathing reptid on their side.”

Nora and her friends have been running and hiding, but time is running out - King Ulmun's reign is quickly turning to one of terror, and he has barricaded himself in a fortress of stone. New allies and revealed secrets about the magic that decimated their world may just hold the key to his defeat. But can she destroy her father's rule and still stay true to herself? Supremely satisfying conclusion to a series that has played by its own rules from the beginning.

I loved the way so many plot elements circled back and echoed events from the beginning of this series and highlighted just how far these characters have come and how much they have grown. It is rare to have such depth of character development in this large of a cast. The juxtaposition between Krey and King Ulman and their very different paths was so well done too. As with previous books, this one was interspersed with flashbacks that helped round out the current situation.

This book had quite a bit of romance - along the entire spectrum. What stood out to me about the romance in this book though was that the focus was not on the physical attraction (though it did get a bit steamy at times) but on the deeper relationships that the characters have forged through this series and above all on their understanding of themselves and that relationships are a give and take. Also the sometimes brutal honesty, and other times deep vulnerability that healthy relationships require. Lots of love that isn't romantic too - and the acceptance of all kinds of love. It was a huge theme in this book, even at the crux of Ulman's story, his descent into madness, and his ultimate fate. Redemption, acceptance, and healing were profound themes in this one. Some characters screwed up - big time. Others came from broken, abusive pasts. But they all became better and stronger together.

This is the third and final book in the Magic Eaters Trilogy. These books must be read in order. They build on each other both chronologically and in depth. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy character driven fantasy with a bit of dystopian sci-fi mixed in and a lot of adrenaline pulsing action. The audio version is narrated by the author who does a wonderful job bringing these books to life. I like hearing where she puts the emphasis and emotion - it adds another wonderful layer of depth to the story.

I have been looking forward to this book and when it was out I devoured it immediately. And the author did not disappoint. The world building and the magic system are very unique really.Add to the mix magical dragons and unicorns .The story is not something new however the writing and the characters made it very interesting. The interactions between the characters are very realistic. But I would also say that at times it was difficult to take the bunch of teenagers seriously.I wish there was more emotional depth to the story.Like Ulmin's rule should have made me feel terrified and support Nora but instead I supported Nora because I like her character.I did not like what the King was doing but the feeling was not too deep(make sense?).I did not like a few parts like Sarza "Conveniently" getting visions when they needed and how easily they could gather supporters and all that. I also wish that Zeisha's powers were explained more. And the romance? Yes let me talk about it in the spoiler section.

Overall I like this book and Krey is my favourite character. I would definitely pick up more works from this author hoping that it will be even better in the future books.

SPOILER AHEAD

In the first and second book I have been painfully shipping Nora and Krey and I almost gave up.But the end of vine eater gave me a little hope. And I'm so happy that the author decided to finally put these two together. I was all smiles while reading their interactions.I do wish that the process of falling was slower but never mind it was really good and THEY ARE MARRIED wow.

This book gave us the epic ending to what has been a truly magical fantasy series. The King has gone mad, his fear for his own life has made him do totally unreasonable things such as building a stone dome all over the palace and turning this into an oven in the summer heat. He has become addicted to both his brain matter as well as to the stone and can no longer live without their magic. In the meantime Nora is adamant on saving her country, she and her friends travel all over, rallying rebel troops to her cause and the amount of people showing their support is growing daily however every attempt they make to come closer to the king gets them arrested or killed. Nora feared for her supporters lives but knew she just had to take the crown before there would be no country left to run. I love the fact that we get to see why Ulmin became so demented and addicted through the beautiful letters his beloved wife had shared with Dani, her sister. Once she was taken from him he changed completely. I am also glad to see the acceptance of gay love in this series and that so many loose ends on the romantic side were so nicely tied up in the end. The dragons and unicorns add to the magic of the story and the happy news at the end brought a tear to my eyes. A fit ending all round for a series full of magic, loyalty, love and courage!

Dragons, unicorns & magic, oh my! I have loved the first to books and this conclusion is no different!! 😊

The characters have been most beloved. There was heartbreak, disappointments (for me) and all types of love. I believe that Nora and Krey landed exactly where they needed to be. As for Ovrun & Zeisha, I was very heartbroken. She has healed and I think he will as well.

Nora’s journey to be the best ruler she can be takes us all over the realm and it’s really amazing all that we experience and learn with her. The world building is excellent!! Lol, I wanted to reach out and pet the Unicorns. ❤

All of Carol Beth’s books are very well edited. The Stone Eater was a wonderful conclusion to the trilogy. I urge you to check out ALL of her books!

My star ratings include these 5 elements:
1★ story line
1★ engaging characters
1★ use of world building/descriptions
1★ narration or editing
1★ the ending

You know, when you’re picking up the next book in a series, especially when it’s been a year since the last one, it takes a chapter or two to catch back up on the story line, characters, relationships, etc. But boy, once I refreshed my memory, the story took off and I could not put it down, especially the last half of the book.

There’s so much to love and magic, as well as, magical creatures to discover and explore. You really can’t go wrong with dragons and unicorns! I really appreciated that the author allows us to feel love, hate, sadness, heartbreak, happiness, and grief; she doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff. Overall, I can highly recommend this book (and entire series), and not just for YA readers, I’m not young by any stretch. :-/

I did receive a complementary advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. I look forward to listening to the audiobook as well and anticipate reading many more books by this author in the future.

What a fantastic end to a fantastic trilogy! I'm going to miss our heroes and the world they've made better. Great charaters that you really get to know with a total different magic 'system' than I've sewn in any other books. If you love good fantasy boojs that are full of action, adventure and have a very human aspect to them without being to hardcore this series is perfect for you. I really can't reccomend this series more highly

Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and this is my honest review.
