Alex Hawk #2

Lost in Kragdon-ah

Rate this book
In "A Door Into Time," Alex Hawk stepped through a mysterious, shimmering door in his basement and found himself flung in time. He is still on Earth, but it is an earth with giant creatures and no technology.

Now, Alex is called upon to rescue the young girl who is thought to be the Chosen One - the savior of Kragdon-ah.

A dangerous journey, new and deadlier creatures and hairs-breadth escapes make Lost in Kragdon-ah a worthy successor to A Door Into Time.

Where to start, I really like the way Shawn Inmon writes, his Middle Falls series is one of my favorite time travel series. It is so different from most time travel books. But Kragdon-ah is by itself different in that it seems going into the future your are in the past. I enjoyed this book as I did the first of this series, however, there was one part at the end of a battle that really upset me and I ended up crying my eyes out because of it. Now I find that when I can get that involved in a book or series to that level of interest that I can laugh, and I did in this book several times, or cry my eyes out, then the author has certainly made the reading worth the whole story. I am looking forward to book three in this series, September isn't that far off, and that's why I waited just awhile before reading book two. Keep on writing Mr. Inmon, I along with many others, I am sure, are faithful readers of your work and we are anxiously awaiting the next adventure.
P. S. I was thrilled to hear that there may be another Middle Falls adventure in the near future as well.

An awesome read!!!

I came across the first book in this series when I signed up to tryout audible. It was so good, that I could more than usual envision the story like I was watching a movie. The descriptions are done so well without be too overly descriptive and boring. Then I had to get the next book in the series. I love all of the relevant 21st century pop culture references. And then I had to start following this author. Best stuff I have come across for a long time from an author i had never heard of. The ending was sooooo compelling!,I have definitely pre-ordered the 3rd!

The quest vibe is strong, and the heroes meet dangerous new animals and weird new situations. Overall a fun book!

Inconsistencies in terms of world-building made it hard to stay invested, though. They are as follows...
1) Justice
2) Romance
3) Technology

Book two

Mistakes: Another extremely well written book.

Plot: Off on a rescue mission. Travel the world of the future.

Characters: I really felt bad for the MC at the end of this book. Great characters.

Wonderful book

This book is about Alex Hawk’s travels to the other side? of Kragdon to bring back The Chosen One that was kidnapped from his village. We find that everything is different on the other side of the mountains and Alex and his team have to fight their way back home.

Following the storyline and style of book 1, it’s solid time travel/Portal/quest stories with sufficient humour and action to make them interesting and fast paced enough to overlook all the inconsistencies.

Wow!

What an adventure! Can't imagine walking or ridding a horse across the U.S. and actually finding their way home. It seems that Alex finds trouble no matter where he goes. But being able to fight the way he does and teaches the other two to work as a team, is the only way that this small group of heroes has been able to survive. And they actually achieve their mission! The only thing that seemed crazy and awful to handle was the loss of one of the three. And now I have to wait so long for the ending. (Life in books sucks sometimes!)

I finished book II in the wee hours of the morning. When I say wee hours, the darkness was already receding with the oncoming of dawn. I just couldn't put it down. Book II in the Alex Hawk series was filled with even more adventures, more enigmatic characters, more futuristic pre-historic (crazy, right?) cities where danger lurks around every corner. This time, however, we're brought face to face with the realities of loss. Book II is one of dangerous pursuits, heartbreaking loss, and soul-breaking disappointment. We are left wondering what in the world will become of Manta-ak now...

An adventure across a future America

This is the 2nd book in the trilogy of Alex Hawk's adventures in Kragdon-ah. The setting is an American in the very distant future. Alex and his team travel across "America" to rescue the chosen One.
To be honest, for me it started slow but by the end of Chapter 9 I was hooked and drawn in again and the remainder of the book flew by.
Another great story from Shawn and of course he leaves us on the hook for book 3 out in September

Excellent second book in a series of three

It is middle of July and the final book is due out in September. I am looking forward to the conclusion of this man' journey and his faithful "dog". I have enjoyed the second book more than the first . This is a journey with a mission landing the reader in different mini adventures as the journey continues. If you read the first book I know you will enjoy the second!

I really enjoyed...

This book more than the first. This had a large quest and many short side quests. The first had a major quest and only a couple of side quests. We get many more stories from individuals in this one. This book moved really quickly with great plot and lots of interesting characters. Great job.

Alex Hawk - Man of his word, Warrior for Good

Shawn Inmon has brought a new world of the future to life in this book as well as the first book, Door Into Time. The language of the tribes, the hazards of daily life, the relationships of characters in the story. I was immersed in this book from the very start. I truly cannot wait for the next book in the trilogy!

Another five star review for another inputdownable book.
I love the characters and the way the story keeps you gripped.
As with everyone of Shawn's books, I felt that I was an extra in the book watching it all first hand, rather than just reading it.
Can't wait for the next one!!

Gripping

One of the longest books I’ve read of Mr. Inmons but so good I didn’t notice. An armchair adventure you won’t want to put down.

Imagination Gone Wild

This is a particularly interesting story mostly because it continues the story of Alex Hawk, a special forces team member flung unknown centuries into a future where civilization has become what was once only thought of as the ancient stone age.
Where once would have been the Pacific Northwestern states, Alex must now find a way to survive and possibly thrive all the while dreadfully missing his former life, all of what he knew of common civilization but most of all, his young daughter Amy, who he fears may either not remember him or, worst case scenario, be angry and possibly hurt thinking he has abandoned her for no reason she would understand.
Thrive Alex does, making for himself a life without modern conveniences and even language, but it's impossible for him to forget his young daughter and never try to return to the time he left behind.
Just when Alex thinks he has done all he can for himself and his new found family and society at large, he is called on once more to use his training and possibly even his life to help rescue one important child, the young girl known as "The Chosen One" and after completing this hazardous rescue he fully expects to be able to walk back through the door in time that he passed through into this strange new/old world and society he has been thrust into.
The rescue of the chosen one is chock full of hazardous adventures and discoveries unforeseen by either Alex or his loyal and fierce companions, Senta and Werda. Seemingly attached and fully bonded to Alex is his gentle and gigantic dog, Kinda, who in many ways is the o!d familiar creature known today as "mans best friend," although a huge dog who is somehow much more advanced and sentient than we might know them today. Monda will not be left behind no matter where or when Alex goes. It goes without saying that Monda will be at his side through every journey regardless of the die.
So, off they go to rescue the chosen one and of course the journey is fraught with danger and nightmare creatures formerly seen as wild animals now experienced on much larger scale. Predators abound, some human and some not. The interesting thing is there are a!ways some human beings who have chosen evil and degradation over civilized and decent interactions with others. Evil lives within evolution.
So to make this review clear I have provided a tiny bit of background to help readers understand the objective and the crew of rescuers intending one final episode of heroics before Alex is able to hopefully rescue himself by stepping back through the door of time that originally brought him to this wild and possibly only place in time where he has managed to cleave a life for himself even though the goal has always been to return to the 21st century, his own time and the daughter he left behind.
And as brave as they are, no matter the success of his mission that is not without loss and pain, Alex is determined to the step through the door. His entire life has to be reclaimed . One step through the door.
But as with any good story there is always a plot twist which is expected but never really known.
That brings me up to date following the story of Alex Hawk and his journey throughout time.
It's interesting because now I have to know what happens. I can't just leave poor Alex standing there on a beach somewhere in time!
I think it's interesting because now that I know Alex and Monda have made it this far I can't put this series down.
What amusing and interesting is that I'm willing to stick with the fantasy and find out what happens. It's a fine construct and a great plot point that has sold me on a series continuation that I normally wouldn't have thought about twice. Let alone keep reading. It's just that impossibly good. That unpredictably fascinating. And honestly, it's that cool. The people are just as flawed in their society as we are in ours. Modern warfare, construction, civility, dress, food, everything we think we have invented and perfected, things we believe we can't live without , rules and customs and laws we depend upon to govern ourselves- everything has faded away and now we are a simpler but never really more likely to be kind and possibly gentler, all gone whether from climate change, war, reverse evolution or something no one knows or understands, it doesn't matter. Nothing Alex knows as civilized is the same.
The door of hope is gone.
Interesting. That simple plot twist will keep me reading this series. I have to know.
If you have come this far you cannot turn away.
I think it's interesting because there have got to be a lot of readers feeling the same.
We are the audience.
This author is the wizard who no doubt will entertain us.
I'm waiting. This one is going to be great!

Alex Hawk is ready to return home from Kragdon-ah. Just one chore to complete first.

Alex agreed to recover the Chosen One from the raiders that captured her. Lanten-eh and her captors were far ahead and Alex realized that this was no journey of a few days, but would take months to catch up to her! Alex chose a young warrior and a proven hunter/tracker who could also fight. He and his companions (including one huge dog-like creature that proved to be his best choice for his small band.) Amazing landscape and population make up Kragdon-ah. Many adventures and scuffles keep the journey interesting. The storyline flows on, deepening and fast moving, then slowing to highlight the beauty and diversity of their pursuit across a future landscape only slightly reminiscent of America.
The characters are awarded a depth and mystery as they grow closer and gather clues of their compatriots on the trail. Their interactions and emotions bring them closer to each other and to me! Their scars and aches echo in my heart as I feel their pain and angst, their interactions with the villagers they meet, negotiate or fight as the story demands. The storyteller reveals the best and worst of their lot, giving brief glimpses into the hearts and souls of the actors in

I am such a huge fan of Shawn Inmon and also such a huge fan of the time travel theme, but these books fall tremendously short for me. I am often amazed at how Shawn can make the Middle Falls series unique and completely afresh with each book in the series. So, an Imnon time travel series would seem like a tremendous hit. Unfortunately, these books tend to be flat and uninteresting. Comparing this book to Olan Thorensen's series of Destinay's crucible is no comparison at all. Olan makes having a modern man displaced in a different time utterly fascinating. Olan's protagonist's use modern knowledge to solve problems has me always wanting more, excited for each next installment. Here the forbidden use of technology makes the series simply boring; our character just walks from one village to the next without using any modern knowledge (or at least very little modern knowledge). I also thought (no spoiler) that Alex's "method" of getting into the city at the end, was a significant departure from Alex's character and morality. I will continue to read the Middle Falls series, but I think I am done with this series unfortunately.

So. I enjoyed the first book enough to decide to read the rest of the series. As is my custom, I read the blurbs for tall the other books before I started reading this one. Somewhere between starting the second book and finishing it, some wires got crossed in my brain. I convinced myself that this book would end with Alex going home. I looked forward to it for basically the entire book. So when I read the ending and realized what had happened (still kicking myself), I was pretty disappointed. I’m still internally screaming about how this isn’t the right ending. Regardless, I have the next book and am about to start reading it, so I shall forgive myself for the confusion and make peace with this book’s ending. It’s 4 stars because I enjoyed most of the book, but wasn’t wholly satisfied with everything in it (and no, that is not referring to the ending, even if this review is mostly about said ending).

Another great Alex Hawk book from Shawn Inmon. I had a hard time getting into the first book, It took me a month to get past the first 100 pages and then I read the rest and now this quite quickly. I think when an author has to do a lot of world building in the first book that can cause you to have a hard time to get through that, once the world is built the rest flows much better. In this book Alex Hawk wanting to go home is tasked with a mission, he reluctantly accepts the mission and goes on a long trek with a couple of others, its a long and very interesting mission that I think anyone who enjoyed the first book will really enjoy this one. If you have not read the first book go back and do that, as this story absolutely builds on the last one. You want to read these in order. #timetravel #shawninmon #alexhawk

Book 2 is a very enjoyable journey across future America. I'd be curious to see a map by the author, but I was pleased to see that he brought back the North American inland sea. Always found that an interesting thing in our history, how very different just the thought of it is. It was cool to hear about the various tribes along the way and the author did a great job of keeping it interesting without falling into the boring trip trap, like lord of the rings.

Alex's mission planning still leaves much to be desired, but it made for an exciting climax to the story and I appreciated the way Inmon did it. The author's note at the end of the audiobook was interesting to hear his inspiration for the book. After finishing it, I can now see how his combination of Apocalypse Now and Canterbury Tales influenced him. "Never get out of the boat."

Another thrilling story!

It took me a while to come around on the first book, but it really did just keep getting better and better as the story continued. The second book took off at a fast pace and never let up. I hope the release date for the third installment holds true, as I am anxiously waiting for it to drop. Well done, Mr. Inmon... p.s. I’m pretty sure that it was Wagner’s “Flight of the Valkyries” that was blaring from the Huey’s at the beginning of Apocalypse Now. Coincidentally, not only is that the same unit I retired from (1st Air Cavalry Brigade, hooah), but the commander of that same unit in the movie (Robert Duvall) is now my neighbor here in Northern Virginia. - Charlie don’t surf!

I started this on Audible from their Plus catalog. I had a tough time warming up to the MC because of several choices he made in this book and subsequent choices he made that were related. I felt like no matter how much he brow-beat himself for it the truth was that he DID abandon his daughter even were it not intentionally. His abandonment was the direct result of choices he made to satisfy his curiosity over his commitments. It made it very hard for me to warm up to him. I did, eventually, and in time he even redeemed himself in regard to said abandonment of daughter. But I was a very hard sell.

That said in terms of portal fantasy this entire series is totally bomb. I loved it and wish there were more of it.

Bulk input day.

Listening this on audible was a little difficult because every character names sound so similar but I still had a outstanding time

I felt like I was with Alex on this adventurous journey. It evoke a range of emotions, including fear, risk, triumph, and fulfillment. Alex personal growth, and a sense of purpose was a joy to read. He was still funny, strong, approachable but still fierce.

Just like the previous book the side characters was hard to connect with but oh boy, when I did it devastated me. It sneak up at me and made the journey so fulfilling.
The ending felt sad, like I was watching a movie where the hero finally gets to go home but I want them to stay.

Great and Epic Story Continues

I loved the first of these books and continued to do so with this second book. More well-developed characters became cherished friends and companions on this journey through the future lands of what was once America. Alex is a truly worthy protagonist, and both those with whom he travels and those whom he meets along the way will be memorable for years to come. This book reminds me of Stephen R. Donaldson's stories of the Land in the stories of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, and I can see myself revisiting this series year after year in the future@

I really liked this book. I mean, I should have given it five stars... and I would have if not for those ******* names! I know the story takes place in an "exotic" location, but PLEASE name the characters something comprehensible that doesn't need a written-out list of characters on the side while reading the book just to keep up with who is who.

Other than that, it's an excellent story and no surprise really since Shawn Inmon is a really good writer. He just really sucks at naming characters for this series.

Alex smiled easily. “That’s fine. We just want to talk to someone about getting across the lakeas well as bow. Can you give us a ride to the eastern shore?”

The barge master used a long pole to push them away from the island, but then he raised a sail and pointed it windward so they sailed right into the wind. To Alex, who had no knowledge of sailing whatsoever, it seemed slightly miraculous, but the others took it in stride. [cant sail into the wind]

Exciting Adventure

Just finished Book 2 in this series. It is a thrilling page turner. The adventures and challenges Alex faces are beyond imagination. It’s a time travel story but it takes place 2-3 thousand years in the future. I’m excited to read the next book and I’m sure it will be as good as the previous 2 books. Shawn is an exceptional writer and Im glad I discovered his writing talents. It’s a must read. You won’t be disappointed.
