Which would you sooner betray, your country or your child?

Fifteen years after retiring as a Navy SEAL, Mason Walker has gone into reclusion, focusing on the mission his dying wife gave him—to raise his daughter to become the best woman she can be. Though burdened by his past, Mason has found contentment in the anonymity of his family life in Baltimore, Maryland.

And then his daughter gets kidnapped.

Upon returning home for lunch one day, Mason comes home to find his house destroyed, his daughter gone, and security footage of her in an anonymous bunker. A voice advises that she will only be safe if Mason does exactly as he’s told.

Will Mason be able to reclaim his old skills to save his daughter? Can he use his ingenuity to save her before he’s too late?

What will it cost him?

More Ruminating Than in Most Thrillers

While it isn't my main genre, I do enjoy reading thrillers on occasion, and I am always on the lookout for a new favorite author or series—or perhaps both. So when this one became available as a bundle at one of my favorite book review sites, I had to snap it up. The books in this collection struck me as a little odd for a thriller. The first book starts with a great action scene with only a little information given about the main character, but the next chapter that flashes forward 15 years has a couple of rather prodigious information dumps, which I am never a fan of in any sort of fiction. I also thought it was strange that the author felt the need to have the bulk of the books take place in the near future, 2028. I'm not sure why he just didn't make it more contemporary. I saw no real benefit to having it take place in that year. I also thought that for a thriller series, the hero seemed to be quite a bit of navel-gazing. I guess I am more accustomed to thrillers that are more action-oriented without so many mental meanderings, ruminations, and questioning of so many choices and decisions by the main character. It slows down the pace of the plot to do so. There were also a number of issues that I saw with grammar, punctuation, and usage—enough that I was irritated by it. I think this author has potential as a thriller writer, but it just wasn't realized in the first three books of this series.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I really liked these books. They are sort of like the Daniel Briggs book but than again they're completely different. The first one was a little too slow for me Mason seemed more like a pushover until the very end. That's why the four star rating instead of 5. Each individual one offered something different. I would give the first a 3, second a 4, and the last one a 5 story wise. They got progressively better but the editing wasn't to great. Mason is a killer. That's what he's always been the best at and he knows how to get the job done. In the first one he gave up his career for his family because he wants them more, they are his number one priority. After 15yrs he has to learn how to start rebuilding his skills to save her. He pretty much follows a bunch of orders, is a doormat because he has to be, and than saves the day. He comes to the realization now that his daughter is grown that he wants to get back in the game. That's what he does. He doesn't do it as part of the military though. He does it through an organization that doesn't have to follow all the rules. Then he gets to play with some awesome hi-tech equipment, work with a team, and become a major bada**. If you like thrillers with military based hero's these are for you.

The Search - Oh. My. Gosh! What tripe; was this written by a junior high kid? The writing style is lacking. The author does not pull me into his world. His descriptions lack the visualization good storytelling provides. His characters are flat; no life, no personalities. The dialogues are unrealistic. Sadly, I volunteered for all four books of this series hoping to find a new author. Should have known when the books appeared on Booksprout Sunday with the due date four days later that I was asking for disappointment. 2*

The Warrior - Howell still has not convinced me to get interested in his world. I do appreciate he uses uppercase for God, but why not mom and dad? Even after two books, I still do not care for the writing style, the characters or their dialogues. Action scenes just remind me too much of Hollywood instead of the real deal. 2*

The Cleansing - Well, Howell is consistent and I am extremely sorry to have selected these four books but I enjoy reading action series like Modeen or Rex Dalton. Well, can't win them all. I got to about 75 percent before my eyes crossed and rolled back into my head and I started skimming. Still the same complaint, lack of storytelling skills. Juvenile, instead of experienced. 2*

The Dark Underground - Made it to Chapter 28 and then refused to read another word. This author's writing style is not for me, nor are his characters and his dialogues. 2*

FAST AND FURIOUS!!!
OMG! Man, talk about getting lost in the pages. A whirlwind of circumstances and unexpected events catapults all these swirling emotions bursting into play that feed from the excitement and nerve racking tension that brings this amazing series blazing to life brilliantly. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches and bumps here and there pull you deeper into these raging storylines and hard hitting plots. Throw in all the drama, intrigue, uncertainty and suspense and you have one intense, page turning bombshell that grabs your attention and holds it from start to finish. The characters are authentic, believable and so realistic it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are so graphically detailed it really pulls this little jewel together beautifully. You have no trouble picturing each scenario as it plays out perfectly. Remarkable job Alex, thanks for sharing this awesome series with us.

I enjoyed this box set. In includes the first 3 books in the Mason Walker series. They can be read as stand alones but it was nice to have them all in one place. The stories are fast pace and take place over a very short period of time. Each one contains a different mission and at the end they are pretty much completely wrapped up. There is plenty of action and intrigue and some twists thrown in as well. There was plenty to hold my attention through all three books. While they are fast paced they do not feel rushed. It fits what is going on. The stories were easy to read. It flowed very smoothly and just keeps you flipping pages to find out what is going to happen next. This is an all action/adventure series, really no romance. The story is not too graphic either. Overall, it was an entertaining read and I enjoyed the stories quite a bit.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This is a great box set that follows Mason's path from the time where his daughter was kidnapped along with the 1st two missions that he did as a member of Onyx.

The 1st story has Mason searching for his daughter who has been kidnapped. The 2nd story has Mason's 1st mission hunting for the kidnapped nieces and nephews of POTUS. The last story has Mason and Onyx attempting to prevent a terrorist attack.

I would recommend that those who like adventures with a lot of action, read this set.

Enjoyed the stories. Good character building. My only problem is with Mason and his constantly introspection and worry.
