Tom Woodford can’t believe he’s humanity’s only hope. Awakening from a decade-long coma, he’s shocked to learn a killer virus ravaged the planet and he’s the last-remaining pure human on Earth. His shock turns to terror when a mysterious woman plucks him from the dripping jaws of a bloodthirsty humanoid monster. Fleeing with his cryptic caretaker towards her home in the West, Tom’s days blur into a daily race to survive. But with the woman’s plan held tightly to her chest, the determined man fears he’s a pawn in a powerful agenda ending in a fate worse than death… Can the world’s final mortal escape the dark forces after his blood? Famine is the first book in the tense Charon Chronicles post-apocalyptic horror series. If you like fast-paced action, high-stakes quests, and underdog protagonists willing to risk it all, then you’ll love J. R. Andrews’ suspenseful thriller.

Great apocalypse!

Reading a truly great apocalypse is the highlight of my day. Finding one with believable vampires is such good luck. In Famine there are both and they blend into a very realistic future. Now add in a main character, Tom, who has been in a coma for 10 years and has been woken to an unbelievable world and you have magic! I really like his moral fortitude. There are several vampires that tug the heartstrings as well as those who just want to make Tom the next meal. And just wait until you meet Lady! One of a kind, Lady is an integral part of Tom’s journey. After all the excitement of the above I can’t wait for Fury!

Impressive

Tom is awakened from a 10 year coma to an apocalyptic world destroyed by a fatal virus, Charon. He is saved by Ana who definitely is more than a normal human. The storyline was descriptive and we'll written. The characters came to life and as a reader, I was experiencing Tom's journey and fight to live right by his side. Warring families of vampires driven to possess Tom for the one thing they crave the most, blood. Lady the German Shepard and Tom's protector was a favorite of mine as I loved a German Shepard named Lady and miss her still. The story flows and this author has that special knack of writing a book that is impossible to pull away from and leaves you sad to read the last page. I look forward to more to this adventure with Tom, Ana, and Lady.

This is my first time reading this author. He has done a great job with his world building along with writing characters that have some depth to them and are interesting. The plot moves along at a nice fast pace that had me sitting on the edge of my seat at times. A really wonderful read.

Better than expected

I read this in one sitting. I'm usually not one for vampire stories. But this one had some really great characters in it. Tom is a bit of a wimp who turns into a man. And of course, Lady. She's a good girl, yes she is.

I didn't get very far into this. It seemed extremely slow to get going, with way too much narrative and declarative dialog for my taste. It may be an excellent book for all I know, but I'll never find out.
