After 100 years crossing the expanse, the generation starship Pioneer is nearly halfway to her destination. The horrors of her first few days in space have been erased by time and forgotten by the residents of the city nestled inside.
But all good things must come to an end.
Deputy Niko Nori finds that out the hard way. After a double homicide leads to a suspect who shouldn't exist, it isn't long before Pioneer's dark history catches up with the people of Metro, and Niko in particular. With no time to waste and few people he can trust, the race is on to unravel the secrets of the past and bring the one person who can help into the present.
Somewhere beyond the locked seals of Metro, Joseph Cross is in hibernation. And if Niko can't reach him…

Emerge by M.R. Forbes This is book #2 in the series and is just as exciting as book #1. Aliens, infighting, lots of action and suspense. Like how the series is going so far. Plan to read further.
This book was nonstop from the 1st page the last!! Book 3 is gonna be something!!All the forgotten books are the best,I just love them! if you love space or you love aliens or you love space and aliens this book is for you! Waiting with bated breath for the next one!!!
10/10:There is no comparison...This is the Mona Lisa of the fictional world!
“My name is Joseph Cross. I’m the Guardian Prime of the starship Pioneer.”
OMG, this was so good. I devoured it in one day. I hungered (see what I did there?) for the next page, next chapter, next bit of excitement. And M.R. Forbes did not let me down.
I fell for Niko Nori (the great-great-whatever grandson of Guardian Nori) from page one. He was young and a bit gungho, and flawed and so very likeable. And then he went and had a very bad day and I couldn't help rooting for the guy going forward.
His side of the story alone would have held my attention to the end, but then they went and woke Guardian Prime Joseph Cross back up, and all bets were off.
“I’ve got a synthetically replicated partition of a cosmic horror in my head,” Joseph replied. “I don’t remember that being in any of the movies.”
This story had heaps of feels and a fantastic pace and huge dollops of excitement and nail-biting angst and all the great things we've come to love from this author. IMO, I think this was one of his better books yet. I loved being on a generation ship again. I loved all the aliens and conspiracy and danger and heartache.
I loved it all.
10/10.
“He’ll be okay,” the Guardian said. “Me and Sarge, we go way, way back. It’ll take a hell of a lot more than an ancient, world-devouring alien with a tentacle fetish to keep my man down.”
In general, I really enjoyed this novel, the second book is a series. As with the first, there was first-rate tension throughout the story, which was well-plotted. The action didn't stop through the whole book.
However, the proofreading was not as crisp as the first book's. There were a fair number of homophone errors, such as: through instead of throw, phased instead of fazed, discrete instead of discreet. Quite a few instances of "it's" rather than "its." An odd contradictory description of a character: "...stifling a groan at the sight of a tall, petite woman dressed..." (tall and petite?). Then there was plain nonsense: “Vis a vie, we need to destroy it,” (huh?)
A star off for the decline in proofing. Even so, this book is very entertaining military sci-fi, and highly recommended.
WOW! The plot and story line on this one almost got to be too much at times. No, that's not correct; not ALMOST; DID! Seriously. What with the "xenosquids", the "moieties", the "xaxkluth", "Iagorth", the "Axon" ("Intellects"), the "Relyeh" (the "Devourer"?), "Goliath", and who knows what else, it all got to be a bit much at times. (Oh, and I forgot the "synthetic"!) And even after reading it, I still have NO IDEA which one of these aliens it was that Prime Joseph actually got in league with to help swing the tide of this mess back to some level of sanity. I am at the point with this one that even if/when a book three comes out, I think I'll pass. Enjoyed the first book a lot; this one, not so much.
I didn't think this series could get better, but it did. The whole concept that M.R. Forbes has created with this series is astounding.
Each point from the first book expertly improved and expanded upon. The whole concept honestly mindblowing.
I'm not going to lie, the the book was initially slow to get rolling (up around the 20% mark) which is normally a bad thing in my opinion. But not in this case. M.R. Forbes expertly put seemingly insignificant details into this first 20% that had important repercussions/outcomes later in the book.
This is now one of only two books in my "favorite" category on goodreads.
I am thrilled to see where this story goes next. Now excuse my while I immediately go download the next book in the series.
Sometimes I pick up a book and rush thru it like there is a reward at the end. When I finished Exodus, I was anxious to get started on the second in the series! I was trying to be fair to my other books but to be honest, I just wanted to vanish back into the world of Pioneer and her crew.
This time we start with the passengers. The 40 thousand people in the hold, living the only life they have ever known. Now several generations in. There is a rumor going about the people that aliens have invaded their ranks, and that other suspicious behavior.
One of the passengers reaches out to Joe, now deep in cryo sleep. Together they set forth to battle and familiar foe and a new face!
Many books make you want to cheer the protagonist. Some even have you going, "YES! The ba...rd got Exactly what he deserved!"
If you've been to war and you've lost some of your brothers or sisters, you know there is a special bond only death can break. When you've identified with a character like the Marine now called the Prime, you can feel a piece break off of your heart when he makes the hard decision that will break all of those special connections, forever.
Man is not alone, and the law of the jungle is penny ante compared to the law of the galaxy.
I enjoy Forbes' writing style, but this book left me struggling to accept some of the concepts as possible. I won't go into details and ruin it for others, but as a huge sci-fi fan that reads a lot of it, Forbes pushed the believability line a little too far. That doesn't mean I won't read the next one. I just won't expect a top notch product anymore.
This was so tight, so fast paced and full of anticipation I almost stopped reading over and over again. I was exhausted. I was worried. I wanted to get to the end so much because I wanted everyone to survive. To be fine. To be able to fight another day. Again, M.R. Forbes is wise enough to not show all his alien cards at one time. We learn bit by bit and that keeps us guessing on pins and needles to find out what’s right around the corner.
Read and you never know what you will find. If you enjoyed joseph and his guardians in book one then read on oops I giving the characters away again every time I try to say something about the story I give the whole plot away. Just and enjoy, it will take time like book one but enjoy
M.R. Forbes is worth reading if Peter Watts doesn't have a new novel out. His work is average and that's OK. I require science fiction novels to read. I devour the genre. The aliens are monsters once again versus anything remotely believable. I wish he would try for more ethereal aliens, indistinguishable from Gods types of aliens.
Interesting enough, this book seemed to be more interesting than the first one. (possibly because of the scifi elements in it?) In any case, I liked it, and will continue with the series, just not now, too many other things on the to read list. Still, a decent read, and oen most scifi fans should like, especially if a bit of mystery is in your wheelhouse.
This new series in the bigger world of the forgotten series is a great addition. Again Mr forbes does very well creating a gripping scene base and more characters to get behind. Consistently gripping storyline that kept me up until the early hours. Cannot wait for the next book.
Another blockbuster from Mr Forbes. His Sheriff series remains one of my all-time sci-fi favorites, but the Forgotten world is a close second. His writing combines non-stop action with iikeable characters and incredible aliens. Can't wait for book 3 in this series
I the the books enjoyed this book and all of them in this series! I am sad that I have read all of the books in this series! And have to wait for the next new one!
A good storyline, well written and carries you on to the end. I have read a couple of series by this author and have enjoyed this the most. I'll look forward to the next volume in the tale.
This series is part of larger universe of books that are each excellent, part space opera part space marine these books span centuries but are part of the whole seamlessly. Great characters and stories that are hard to put down
Well, sorry, but this was the one I said I'd read to give him a second chance... To see if he could get away from using monsters and get back to writing sensible si fi... He didn't so now he's lost me.
First book was a reasonable action near future sci-fi unfortunately this second book has started to become rather far fetched. I see no-way few Guardians could so easily drive off two groups that had been in a galaxy spanning war for a 100,000 years, they would be just too advanced.
