Jordan Rivet is an American author of YA science fiction and fantasy featuring determined heroines, vivid worlds, and daring missions. Originally from Arizona, she lives in Hong Kong with her husband.
Jordan's YA fantasy series include Steel and Fire, Empire of Talents, The Fire Queen’s Apprentice, and Art Mages of Lure. Her science fiction includes Wake Me After the Apocalypse, The Seabound Chronicles, and The Lost Clone.
The Dragonfly Oath is an electrifying finale for an amazing series. Rivet blends political intrigue and invasion with the powerful themes of identity, wrestling with toxic relationships and the liberty of individual choice.
I recommend this trilogy and its predecessor to any and all lovers of immersive worlds, engaging characters and epic, powerful magic.
Series Info/Source: This is the 3rd, and final, book in the Fire Queen’s Apprentice series. I borrowed this book for my Kindle through Kindle Unlimited.
Story (4/5): This did an awesome job of wrapping up the series. I didn't enjoy Sil's parts of the story as much, just too much politics! However, Sil's parts were a lot shorter than Tamri's so it ended up being fine. Everything is very nicely wrapped up, pacing was good, and nothing felt rushed. In this book Tamri decides to go off on her own to further explore the power and teachings the Lightning Queen dragon can provide. Meanwhile, the surrounding kingdoms are under threat of invasion...only Sil and Tamri can make the changes needed to divert disaster.
Characters (5/5): Tamri grows a lot as a character and I really enjoyed her parts of the story. Sil is also in the story quite a bit and, although I don’t enjoy her as much as a character, she does learn to navigate politics better. I thought all the characters, even the side characters, were really well done. They were all engaging and fun to read about.
Setting (5/5): I continue to really love this world full of dragons and magic. Rivet does an amazing job with making a whole and complete world here that is very fun to go on adventures through.
Writing/Drawing Style (4/5): This book is very well written and easy to read. The book changes POV between Tamri and Sil. I looked forward to Tamri’s parts a lot more because they were just full of more excitement and adventure. I also really enjoyed watching Tamri and Heath together. Sil’s parts were a bit boring and I didn’t feel like she really grew much throughout the series. The story was well paced and things came together nicely at the end, nothing felt rushed or forced.
My Summary (4.5/5): Overall this was a solid fantasy series that I really enjoyed. I would definitely recommend this series if you are looking for an action-packed fantasy with dragons and magic. Rivet does a very good job with characters, world-building, action scenes, and creating a well-paced story. I am considering going back to read Rivet's other series (which takes place before this one) so that I can learn the story of The Fire Queen. I also plan on checking out Rivet’s other series.
I waited forever for this final installment and I am utterly pleased. Heath is just the sweetest thing ever and was always my favorite. As much as I like Tamri, I love Selivia more. The characters are all amazing and the story kept me on my toes just like the last two books. 5 stars!
The Dragonfly Oath, Jordan Rivet's final installment in her phenomenal series The Fire Queen's Apprentice, is one of the most awe-inspiring books I have ever read. The entire series was fantastic, but this part of Tamri's tale seemed so much more personal. Her interactions, and her struggles, with the Lightning dragon were so real you could taste the magic! Her search for self was so poignant, it gave off waves of sorrow and despair. Can Tamri persevere? Can she work the Lightning, or will it ensnare and consume her mind, body and soul? Will she truly be able to fulfill her Oath?
The storyline remained fast-paced and well written, filled with dragons, magic, mysteries, myths, danger, political intrigue and back-stabbing injustices. The characters are vast, although many we already know and love. Dragons play key roles in this adventure. Overall, The Dragonfly Oath is definitely a great way to end this fantastic series!
This final book had some painful moments, but also dragons. The lore and worldbuilding for these guys is AWESOME. And it’s nice to see all the pieces and character arcs come together. We have our epic dragon battle, and then get our happy ending for all our new lovebirds.
And babies for our legacy characters from the last series.
So, all in all, I really liked this series. It has a bit of a different flavor than the last one, but it still is such a nicely crafted, well-balanced story that makes me super excited to try other series from this author. 🙂
This is the final chapter of a brilliant series that has everything to be just great. Tamri the mage apprentice has her most difficult and exciting guest, to try to tame the lightning dragon and in the process not be consumed by her.
Let me preface by saying I've been a solid fan of all of Rivet's books thus far, but this The Dragonfly Oath just didn't do it for me. I enjoyed reading about Tamri and her relationship with Queen- who is, may I say, really unhinged...and that's putting it nicely. BUT- it just felt so different from the rest of the books. Tarmi acted different. Tamri felt different. And I get it, really. She's dealt a big blow that crumbles the foundation of her world. So much that none she loves are able to reign her in.
I enjoyed getting to see more Sora again, along with the interaction between Sora and Selivia. Though I wish there was more sibling interaction with Siv as well. I missed Dara in this book as well. and I constantly want more Heath, but that's just my love of romance.
Maybe this was a fantastic ending of a book for others-I would say this is one of these books where it's not them (the book), it's me. I'd say if you enjoyed the series thus far, like I did, this one is a worth a read, even if it wasn't for me.
Ok, to be fair, I just hate Tamri. Since half or more than half of the book was about her.....didn't make me love the story. She ran off to get revenge, not caring who she stomped along the way and then spent half the book "training with lighting" and catering to a moody toxic dragon. She didn't even SEE the damage she helped the dragon do and kept justifying her bad decisions. I have no idea what Heath saw in her, but I'm glad he's happy lol Everyone else, great ending. Siv was hardly in the book (granted this was a spin off not book 8 haha). He and Dara had a beautiful baby girl! Even with Tamri losing control and getting Dara shot by the Lightning Queen smh Sel and Latch are happy too. Kel and Sora survive and so do their twins and the nations are once again on terms of peace, with new schools in different nations modeled after Dara's Wielding School. Wish I'd seen more of the students again but book insinuates they are there and still learning. Loved everyone but Tamri and Queen. I understand Queen but .... just because a toxic person has had problems doesn't mean I'd surround myself by toxic people. When they don't want to change and love to hurt and are selfish, its just not healthy. Tamri eventually admits this and lucky her she gets her wish about working with Lightning anyway. Oh, and almost forgot. Sora! Gosh, she's another one that annoyed the crap outta me. Sel was TRYING to help her, but she kept shutting her down, claiming to be "political" and "smart" about her moves. What happened? She got kicked out of the castle. She'd been through war, CAUSED half the main Trure suffered by sending an army of fireworkers there before but REFUSED to help Soole in their time of need. Her ladies were just as hypocritical, claiming to want peace but willing to kills children and loyal servants to take the throne. Honestly, all of the Trurens were annoying, hypocrites and stupid. Lucky for them the other Amentelles and allies always come to save them lol

I liked the first book of the trilogy, but the character's decisions grew worse and worse. Sure, everything comes out mostly okay, but a little self-control on the part of the main characters would have made it all so much easier. Also, I felt as if some scenes were missing - after days of excruciating detail about travel and angst and everything going wrong, the battle ends and we just skip to the epilogue. Where are the hero moments, where unexpected allies and old friends ban together to take the day? Where are the details of who lived and who fell and how the healers worked miracles? Urgent missions, such as to get a healer to Dara, just got scuttled with no explanation of why it was no longer needed. We need to savor the victories to make the sacrifices worthwhile. I found myself skimming most of this final book just to get it over with.
I was impatient for this book to end in a way I hadn't been with the others. Tamri and her risk taking were sore points, particularly once she obtained an alliance with the lightning dragon who she calls Queen. The dragon teaches Tamri but they fight for control so much during battles that it's a precarious partnership all the way up to the end of the book. Speaking of, for how jealous Queen is, the separation from Tamri was too easy I thought even though it was clearly necessary as the dragon had no love of humans, excepting Tamri.
The split perspectives continues in this one with Selivia's adventures adding to the overall storyline. It's probably because I wanted it to get to the end but the detours to Selivia were frustrating.
All in all, Tamri and Queen do defeat the King of Pendark, his scorched remains Tamri finds to confirm the truth of it. Dara has a baby girl. Heath and Tamri share I love yous and he proposes. The main characters live, and Latch and Tamri are excited to be off to explore the lightning now that they realize it was Queen's thoughts that made it dangerous and not the magical substance itself. Their solution to keep folks from going overboard in their studies, including themselves is to swear a magically binding oath.
The Dragonfly Oath Jordan Rivet (I received a copy of The dragonfly Oath in exchange for an honest review)
A well thought out ending to a captivating Series of Magic Substance Wielders, Dragons, Kingdoms, and the things dreams are made of. Starting with the finish of the two attacks by neighboring Kingdoms, and the repelling of the Thunderbirds, and the Lightning Queen by Queen Dara, they finally hoped to have a period of peace, and a chance to seal the Lightning and the Queen Dragon back into the Ground, it was not to be.
King Khrillin of Pendark was already busy sending spies and assassins to steal and kill, and that changed the destiny of the Kingdoms, and of Tamri who in a mindset of revenge and protection of her Friends, and peace traveled to Thunderbird Island to bond with and learn from the Lightning Queen Dragon so she might defeat the coming threats.
Jodan has written this in her Magical Way that pulls the story around you and won't let you go until you finish the journey with your comrades. You become a part of the story in the spell she weaves, and the ending comes far too soon, and at the final drift out, you want to continue to see the next step that your mind says they should take. Now that.. is a Book!
This series is so good, and this book provided a great ending! After getting to know these characters across eight books in two different series, I was worried this book wouldn't provide a satisfying climax or happy ending (because I love happy endings!)
But this book does that and even better than I've come to expect from this author. I adored this book, and this whole series is a great example of how a sequel series should be done. It expands the world, builds off what happened in the previous series, and yet doesn't trample the happy endings already established at the end of the first series.
Tamri and Heath...they are such a great couple. Heath especially is just my FAVORITE! He is so sweet and caring, even when Tamri puts him through the wringer in this book.
Even though I was dying to read this book, I waited until I could listen to it on audiobook, and I'm glad I did. After listening to all of them on audiobook, it wouldn't have been the same without the amazing narrator bringing the characters to life. I'm so glad the same narrator does both series. She does such a great job!

I absolutely loved this finale! After unleashing the Lightning magic and awakening a powerful dragon, Tamri does her best to resist being tempted by the Lightning's pull. Then, tragedy strikes and her grief crumbles her resolve. Intrigued by the dragon and motivated to learn the new, powerful magic, she pursues a tentative partnership with the dragon she calls Queen. In exchange for information about humanity and the dangers they pose to Queen's freedom, Queen will teach Tamri how to use the Lightning magic, and Tamri will be able to enact revenge on the enemies that have wronged her.
Jordan Rivet masterfully writes the characters' perspectives. Despite the often crazed trains of thought, I was sucked in completely. Tamri undergoes some fantastic character development and the plot wraps up in a satisfying way. If you enjoy dragons, magic, and well-rounded characters, this is the series for you!
I have no words. This series and the first series are fantastic and this book has rounded out the universe as one of my favorite of all time. I read the entire thing in one sitting. I physically could not put it down. Jordan Rivet has completely outdone herself in this book. Not only is it a satisfying ending to the story but you truly feel as though all the plot beats from all the books have fully developed. I’m so pleased with this book that I may never recover. How am I supposed to enjoy any other books when I know this masterpiece of literature exists. At least I’m comforted in the knowledge that Jordan Rivet is a prolific author, so we might get more works of art like this in the next year. I’ve read every book she has written till this point, and I’m still shocked every new book that somehow she has improved.

5 Big Stars for such a great series! This is a must read for dragon lovers! I just love this world and the magic so much! I will truly miss it, so I will have to reread soon.
Very mild spoilers below.
My favorite thing about this book was Tamri’s relationship with Queen. It was complex, problematic, fun, and very exciting. My other favorite thing about this book is how each of the main characters have great storylines, and I am never disappointed when the point of view shifts. I have grown to care about each character so much. The only thing missing for me was a bigger showdown with Khrillin, but the ending was still very satisfying. I will miss Dara the most, but also Lady Vine. I would love to see a spin off series for her! They are both among my favorite female characters ever!

I’m going to be honest - i have mixed feelings about this last book. I love Jordan Rivet and I loved their steel and fire series, and i loved the last two books of this series. but this one i had issues with. I know Tamri was dealing with a lot of emotions and normally i’m 100% a fan of the whole “she snaps” trope thing (shout out dany targaryen like) but her choices on this one were so frustrating. everyone she loves was trying to tell her that they were worried and they wanted to help her homegirl continuously ignores them. and then she just kept getting manipulated in a toxic relationship w queen? it was just unsettling the choices she made and that’s why this book was a lot harder for me to give a better rating. still a great series - will still recommend to anyone.

Enjoyed the growth of Tamri most in this book. I think her development was my favorite part of this book. No rushing through to get to a better part like I did in The Thunderbird Queen.
Heath grounded Tamri and reminded her she needed an anchor to keep herself from being lost in the grief and replacing it with another obsession while working with Queen. I enjoyed this. He never doubted her ability, just reminded her of who she was while letting her grow to who she could be.
Queen isn't bad, just mad and scared. I like how Rivet wrote her anger to be a shield and shell at the same time. The connection between her and Tamri is so fragile, but needed by both. Well Done.

Wonderful conclusion to this series. Very intense book , full of passion , excitement and lots going on. Tamri, the main character has come a long way from being “ just a thief”. She has a lot of deeply personal stuff going on, a lot of heartache but also a romantic element. The journey was captivating for me as a reader and she ends up a well rounded individual, which is what we all aspire to. There was so much happening but in an intriguing way. It is such a page turner keeping up to the early hours. Plus it has dragons. What more do you want.
I have really enjoyed this series of adventures following a new twist on magic and dragons. Especially because it doesn't dwell for too long on blatant sex but more on loyalty and love hard earned. Brilliantly descriptive exactly the sort of escapism I like. So glad I found this author, she is a fantastic story teller. Almost un- put down able. Highly recommended. Oh and another thing, well edited and proofed, so fed up with reading sub standard books that have been poorly edited with glaring spelling errors. Will be looking for everything she has written.
Tamri is back for the ending to this amazing series. The story just grabbed me and kept me reading to the end just to see how it would end. I loved the mix of magic, action, and political intrigue as Tamri is convinced she has everything under control. I loved the characters and that I could easily imagine what was going on. I had my fingers crossed a few times too just in case. Just a great story.
Ok, Jordan Rivet is absolutely one of my most favorite authors! I’ve read this series and the steel and fire series and both are series that I will definitely reread in a couple moths because they are my favorites. You don’t need to read both, but I loved seeing how doing so enhanced the experience. The storyline is just incredible. There wasn’t a moment where I was bored or my mind wandered off. The characters are dynamic and so relatable. Absolutely loved this!
Jordan Rivet ALWAYS writes an exciting book. The Fire Queen's Apprentice series joins Rivet's other series as a story that entertains, inspires and teaches. Her characters are relatable and her worldbuilding is phenomenal. Not a missed step in the whole series. My only issue with this particular book is that it seemed to end a little more abruptly than I would have liked, but it didn't leave any loose ends either. For fantasy readers, this is worth the time.
A great conclusion to another great series in the world of the Fire Queen!! It was great to go back to these lands and experience more adventures through the eyes of already familiar but also new characters. Jordan Rivet is an awesome fantasy writer!!! Looking forward to more series in these realms!! :)
*I’ll do a full review soon even tho no one reads them lol.
Omggg🥺🥺🥺
I can’t believe I finished this series🥺😭🤭. It’s been such a journey and just amazing and I sound like I’m giving a graduation speech rn so I’ll stop, but this world and this book (tied w/ night of flame) are prolly my favourite ever. I can’t believe it’s over for now😭😭
Great ending to an excellent series. This one only got a 4 instead of a 5 like the other 2 for some minor issues. The writing is still captivating and the story is full of action and intrigue. My personal feeling is that this was rushed and things were skimmed over to get to the conclusion. The interaction between the characters was missing that pervious personal aspect.
The third book was as enjoyable as the first one! I hope we see these characters again in future books that the author might write. I loved the character growth in this book, and how they handled their struggles. I definitely recommend this author, and this book series. Thank you!
A wonderful conclusion to a wonderful series! I absolutely loved seeing how Tamri grew especially, but also Selivia. It was a treat to be in this world again and of the trilogy this one kept me the most engaged, probably because the stakes were highest. Jordan Rivet is earning her spot as one of my favorite fantasy authors, that's for sure!
A great ending to the series. I couldn’t predict what would happen but I am happy with the path the author chose. This book was full of adventure and excitement. Nothing to make you blush and no words to bleep. A good wholesome read.
