First in the Pelican Beach cozy romance series and revolving around the Matthews family. The couple focus is on Payton Matthews and Cole Miller.
My Take
It's a sweet story that is so stilted in the writing that I almost couldn't finish it. I plugged on, but I won't be continuing in this series, as much as I enjoy the concept and characters.
Most of the tension is between the sisters with a bit cropping up with Payton's paranoia about men cheating. Yeah, it's fair that she'd be sensitive, but then there is overly sensitive, which could have been improved with a more realistic tension.
What is with that weird segue into the blush pink maxi dress? I thought I'd missed a chunk of text. What was the point of Jack showing up? What is his last name?
Gilcrest primarily uses first person protagonist point-of-view from Payton's perspective, which is how we learn about Payton's passion for photography. Gilcrest does a beautiful description of that passion. Very nice.
Gilcrest uses far too many info dumps. Oh, they're not the usual dumps, just laid out there. Instead the characters dump the info, sounding like they're reading off a script. What the hell? It works so much better when you incorporate the info as part of the story. As for her erratic use of honorifics, oy. Ya might wanna look into "Peak vs Peek vs Peke vs Pique", other capitalization issues as well, and "Yore vs You're vs Your".
I know, I'm whining about too much description and now I'm going to whine about not enough. It's all because the characters are dumping information rather than Gilcrest incorporating the background info and descriptions in with the story. Don't keep telling us how Payton dresses, show us. Make the dialogue between the sisters more realistic when Abby trashes Payton's dress sense. When telling us about Payton's day with room inventory, housekeeping, and order forms, turn it into a show instead. Have some interaction with other employees. Get the reader invested in the drama about to befall the inn. All this tell is not pulling me in nor wanting to know what will happen in Sunsets at Pelican Beach . I just don't care.

Cole Miller runs a business, Pelican Renovations. His wife, Laura, died and he's raising their daughter, Emmie, by himself with help from his widowed mother, Alice. His dad, Frank, died some years ago. Martha is the receptionist. Christen is Cole's cousin whose wedding to Jacob hit a snag.

. . . the family business in an upscale area. Helen, a.k.a. Gram, and William Matthews are their parents who made a success of the inn. Abby is one of Payton's sisters and married to Wyatt, a lawyer. They have two children, Maggie and Aidan. Rebecca, a.k.a. Becca, is their single sister, a successful lawyer with issues. Susan is a long-time, unthinking friend; Ross is her husband.
Staff includes Shelby in Housekeeping and Nancy who works the front desk. Paul is the new confused accountant. Guests include Jonathan and Samantha Mitchell.
Claire owns Claire's Fashion. The Cove is a new restaurant in town. David Thompson will be the new, insensitive owner. Carol and Charles Donovan have a daughter, Lexi, who helps her snarky mother at her boutique.

I don't think the artist read the book as the cover doesn't ring any bells for me. Sure, it's gorgeous. A peaceful blue sky with dreamy clouds over a a multi-story white beach house at the top of a cliff with waves crashing against the rocks below. There is no easy way down this cliff so how anyone in the Matthews or Miller family gets to the beach, I dunno. Well, there's no beach to get to, so I guess that's a moot point. At the very top is the series info in a deep red with the title floating around the roof of the house in the same red. At the bottom of the cover is the author's name in white.
The title is literal, as the story takes place at The Inn at Pelican Beach.

This was a quick and easy read about the Matthews family concentrating on Payton's story. She is getting her life back in order after her divorce and finding love again with Cole. She learns the importance of opening herself back up and to take the risk of building new relationships.

This book wasn’t BAD, but it’s not my favorite.
Set in Florida, about a girl named Payton who goes back home to help with her parents’ business. She meets Cole Miller because he is hired to do some renovations on her parents’ inn.
The plot was shallow, and the romance felt unrealistic and rushed at times.. although there were a couple cute moments.
The story itself just wasn’t good. The writing was mediocre. Ended in a weirddd cliffhanger. I don’t want to have to get into another book.
At the end, Payton and Cole are basically dating.. and then I read that the next book in the series is about Payton and Cole having a huge falling out! WTH 😂
Do I even want to read another book in the series? 🤨🧐🤔 NOPE!
I’m sure the next one will end in a sucky way too and then I’ll be disappointed again.
Cole as a character was okay, but this book was too short and weird.
#1 thing I disliked was that Payton’s family business was sold. Why didn’t they keep it in the family? 🤨🥺 Payton and her siblings could’ve actually helped and worked there. They didn’t have to give away their legacy..🤷🏻♂️ oh well.
This book doesn’t make you hungry for a sequel. Also, there was too much about Payton’s family. And all the sisters were just fighting the whole time 😂

Hate cliffhangers!
Was thoroughly enjoying the book until it came to an abrupt end in the middle of the story. Would have given it more stars if I didn't have to get another book just to find out how this one ends. Guess I'll never find out. Oh well.

This story was captivating from the first chapter. Family ☑️. Baggage ☑️. A new chapter in life ☑️. A single dad ☑️. Falling in love ☑️. Dreams ☑️. Bringing those dreams to life...still a work in progress. ThisMichele Gilcrest wrote a dynamic story about a new beginning following a divorce. Closing that door & opening another is not easy at all, been there done that. story has great characters, a wonderful plot and if you want to know what happens next, you better read it. You won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

My thoughts: 🔖Page 8 of 145 Ch 2- This is not the vibe I was expecting.
🔖17 Ch. 3 - This is painfully dull. I can't do 100 pages of this. I'm surprised to learn this is set in Florida, I thought it was Maine. 🤷🏾♀️
Why I quit: I already have all 3 of these books and I was primarily reading them because they have been on my TBR for a year and the only library that carries them is about to expire my card. I now under why only one major library carries them. There isn't enough sunshine in this story and the dialogue is awkward. I have other books that need reading and no time to waste on those that are just okay.
Recommend to others?: No. Short doesn't mean sweet.

This book is a quick read as it introduces the reader to the Matthews family, long-time owners of the Inn at Pelican Beach. Through this first in a series, we meet parents, William and Helen, and their daughters, Payton, Abby, and Rebecca. Things are set up to easily have several more books in the series.
The story moves quickly and there were a few times I felt some details were left out or that I missed something. Maybe it was due to the author’s attempt to get everyone introduced and set up things for future books.

What a lovely book I thoroughly enjoyed.

Payton is newly divorced and needs to start over. She goes back to her hometown in Pelican Beach where her parents run an Inn. She stays in their home while working at the family business at the Inn. Not looking for anything or anyone to fulfill her future, she finds herself wanting to start her own photography business but doesn't know where to start. Her parents are getting older and want to retire. So Payton finds a new someone that helps her fulfill her dreams and her new future. Great book with lots of fun characters including Payton's sisters, parents and friends. Thoroughly enjoyed this.

Payton has just got divorced and moved back to Pelican Beach to help run her parents inn. There she meets Cole and they soon start dating. A story told from various viewpoints (wish Cole had been one of them) it’s quite twee and sweet. I found the ‘guy-so-gorgeous-but-only-has-eyes-for-you’ scenario as usual, a tad unrealistic. I also sometimes had trouble understanding who was talking at times. Speech marks also sometimes didn’t appear where they should have done. A nice, cute story without a great deal of substance. Not sure I shall continue the series even though this ended a bit abruptly (no doubt in readiness for the next book).

She explains to Cole the problem. Cole not only understands but tells Payton of his attraction. Can they find love with all that's going on?

This is a book for women in their 50’s to enjoy. Or maybe hate. This week-long romance is full of falling in love and meeting the family and talking about the future and making promises. It’s kind of cute when it’s 15/16 year olds acting this way— oblivious to life’s real issues and saying stuff that means everything to them but really nothing in the grand scheme of life. It’s a lot less cute when it’s two 40-something’s (one fresh out of a divorce, and one recently a widower). It was a little embarrassing to read. Please, no one lives like this.

I came across this author and wanted to check out her work, so I purchased a copy. When I saw it in my library, the first thing that stood out was how nice the cover was. Not knowing what to expect, I opened the file and started to read. The first night I only intended to read a chapter or two before going to sleep, but once I got started, I could not stop: I read six chapters.
I loved how the dialogue flowed, and the story was intriguing. I would differently recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story with some twists and turns but stays on the plot.

If you’re looking for a G rated easy read love story I guess this would be for you. There’s no steam and the way the story reads is kinda all over the place. I feel like there should have been breaks in the chapter to signify a scene change so that was kinda confusing. Also the way the chapters end have you thinking the next chapter will pick up where the last left off but it’s a completely different place and time. Really hard to follow but I guess I get it for a 150-something page short book.

Well, I know it has gotten a lot of poor reviews, but I enjoyed this book! Yes, it could have gone deeper into the lives of the characters and the plot could have deepened but I breezed right through it. I agree that the sale of the Inn was a blow to me. With three daughters in the family and the years the family had run a successful inn, I felt one of the girls should have stepped up to keep
the inn in their family. I hope to read the other books in the series to see if they go more into detail.

This is the first novel of Michele Gilcrest that I read and I must say I am hooked. I received this book as an ARC for review from her. This is such a sweet romance with a lovely family surrounding it. At middle age , one starts thinking it is the end of the world. But this story gives you the motivation to dream and dream big. I am looking forward to the second book in the series. Lovely read, I would recommend it.

The Inn At Pelican Beach: Pelican Beach Book 1 is by Michele Gilcrest. This series starts out quite well. However, losing the inn isn’t the easy part. Payton has come home to help her parents run the inn for the summer as she figures out what she is going to do after her divorce. Little does she know that the inn will be sold, she will have to find another place to live and a job or that she will find romance with the local construction guy. The book is a great summer beach read.

It was a really good start to the series and it was my very first book I've read from this new to me author. I really enjoyed this story about second chances and new beginnings. My only complaint is that it was so short. It's good for a beach read for sure.
Loved the main characters Payton and Cole instantly as the other family members.

First let me say I enjoyed this story. It kind of feels like it ends abruptly and doesn’t feel completed. Thankfully the rest of the series is available. I’m listening via hoopla and do intend to continue this series. It’s refreshing to have a MFC over 40. I will say though that I’m not sure if it was the narrator or the story itself but the main female character sounded much older than the early 40s she was suppose to be.

I enjoyed this even though I am getting tired of the short books grouped in a series. I wish it would be batched together in one complete novel. I like this but I probably won't read the rest because I have so many other things to read.

Unpleasant Characters and Relationships
I read about 20% of this book and shut it forever. I found the family relationships highly dysfunctional and unpleasant to read about. It is one thing when one character has issues or had a difficult experience or life. It is another thing completely when the protagonist deliberately returns to a dysfuntional family and slops around in unhealthy ways with family members who categorically avoid honest discourse, the results of which appear to be the bulk of the plot. Great story, but...
I loved the story but there were way too many errors. I have to wonder if the author has a proofreader or a copy editor, and if so, does the person have a good command of the English language. I read indie authors almost exclusively, and every one of them writes error-filled books.

Very nice beginning to a series. This is Payton's story as she returns home after her divorce. The book also introduces her 2 sisters and their parents as well as Cole, his daughter and his mother who will obviously play an important role in Payton's future. Looking forward to reading book 2.

This was an okay little book- very short. Not a lot of substance or originality in the storyline. I did like the characters. I was a bit put off when the main character who was in her thirties used words like “dreamy” and “squealed” after a minor romantic encounter. Also the book could use a good editor.
