Alex Carlisle owes a debt beyond cash. Once upon a time--all of three months ago--Alex found himself in a foreign land hunted by mercenaries and demon lords. Only the intervention of a sultry, playful jinn got him home again. Zafirah didn't help him for free. Now she's come to collect.

With her sights set on a dangerous family of ancient sorcerers, Zafirah needs every edge. She needs not only Alex, but the friends and lovers he brings with him. Her quest threatens to extract a price from angel, demon, and mortal alike... and most especially the witch who brought them all together.

Good story ruined by insufferable agenda pushing

Mr. Kay is a fine storyteller who'll never be more than a second rate author if he continues using his characters as nothing more than props to push his delusional, muddle brained politics. No one cares how "woke " your characters are, Mr. Kay. If this is the best Seattle has to offer, it's no wonder the city is such a dumpster fire of epic proportions.

Weaker than the first two books and hindered by the author's SJW nonsense.

I'll start by addressing some of the criticism I've seen in other reviews.

At the start of our story there is a protest and I may be incorrect but it appears this is the authors take on the "speech equals violence" debate. Alex responds to this "speech" with actual physical violence. We then have several characters jump in to rationalize and praise him regarding his decision. This includes a "PoC" I believe showed up briefly once prior and whose counter point is a clingy "huwhite" misogynist. This whole portion of the story wouldn't be so egregious if it wasn't basically called in to question indirectly by statements made by Rachel and Alex himself later in the story. Also if you've read the previous book you may recall an Angel that calls out Alex on his "white savior complex" and tells him to "stay in his lane". If it were to be revealed that the beginning of this book was actually written last as a tacked on political statement I would believe it. It adds little to the plot or character development. It actually portrays Alex in a rather poor light and paints his friends as enablers. All that said it's a rather small portion of the book and certainly doesn't warrant a serious reduction of stars.

There's a few questionable lines from Zafirah but that's to be expected. Her life experience has left her prejudiced against Americans and Angels. Not a huge detractor from the story. Arguably adds to character development.

There are some developments regarding the characters that some may interpret as check boxes or virtue signalling. A lot of this has been foreshadowed and should not be a surprise at this point. No reason not to pick up this book. We've had goth poly bisexual witches since the 1st book. That's both a stereotype and inclusion :)

With all that said there's some good development in this book. It's pretty narrowly focused but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's a bit more intimate in scope. There's substantial progress regarding Onyx and Alex's relationship and if you were paying attention to some of the foreshadowing prior it will pretty much go the direction you suspected. There's some more supernatural bullsh*t and our plucky protagonists get involved with the best of intentions and again everything goes to hell. In the end we complete this particular story arc all while setting up for more to come. At this point most of the previous plot lines have concluded and that's satisfying.

*Possible Spoilers*

I really like Lilith both as she has been presented in the series so far and as a biblical/legendary character. I hope she continues to be a multifaceted tragic character and does not develop into a stereotypical mustache twirling villain(ess).

So what should you do when someone has a difference of opinion? Apperently assault is a good answer. It was hard to get through that in the first two chapters, but I tried again and this book was all over the place. It was hard to believe this was the same author of this series and of Poor Man's War.

It has been almost 4 years since the last book came out. When I saw this one available I had really high hopes. I thought the first 2 books in the series were great. I didn't like the 3rd book in the series as much. Unfortunately this book was more like the last book than the first 2 books. The same issues I had with that book were present in this one as well. I could pretty much copy and paste the first paragraph of my review for book 3 and it would be exactly the same way I feel about this book. In fact, let me do that right here:

"This book wasn't as good as the other books in this series. The first 2 books were a little more fun. The first book was awesome, because everything was new. The 2nd book lost Taylor as a main character but Onyx and Molly were now a much bigger part of the story. There were supernatural fights and Alex's friends always came to his defense. This was the first time it seemed like the group was putting themselves in the path of a supernatural fight, as opposed to in the previous books where there did not seem to be much choice."

So basically it is the same thing. There wasn't much "fun" in this book but a lot more action. Alex and his group again find themselves in a dangerous situation but unlike in the first 2 books where they were just defending themselves, this time they went looking for trouble. Alex is bonded with Lorelei who wants him to have sex with a bunch of different people, not just the people he is in a "relationship" with. This doesn't happen. There is a lot of sex in this book but only within the main group. Everyone is in love with everyone else. I get it, that's great, but what about all the other women who lust after Alex and he whom he lusts after? That is where the fun part comes in. Having Alex get comfortable with doing kinky shit with other people while his Angel and Demon lovers get off on it, now that it what I would call fun! I also felt this book was getting a little too preachy.

The story takes place about 6 months after the events of book 3. Zafirah has come to Alex to collect on her debt of service. She is following a family of powerful sorcerers and needs help. They are prepared for Angels, demons and all sorts of supernatural creatures but they might not be prepared for a mortal like Alex. He of course enlists the help of all his friends. The story jumps around a lot in the early part of the book and it is hard to keep track of what is happening. Sometimes it hops to the past, sometimes to the present. Sometimes the point of view isn't from anyone that we know yet either which makes it even more confusing. I think the author is trying to hard to connect everything together

I still like the characters and the idea behind the story, I just think the first 2 books were a little more fun.

Before I became aware of the political climate, I'd have loved this series without noticing the politics of the author. Maybe he thinks that social justice warriors are awesome people, but I certainly don't.
Punching nazis? Sure, I can get behind that. Only thing tho, when that kind of thing happens in REAL life, it's almost always someone the guy doing the punching simply disagrees with, so he is simply called a nazi. See? He punched a nazi!
Too much glorification of things that are less sparkly in real life

A bit difficult

But rewarding in the end. My problem was one of unfamiliarity. It took me a bit to figure out the cast as it’s been a while since the last novel. Once the forward progress got moving it really smoothed out, but a brief recap at the beginning wouldn’t go amiss. The end was awesome.

I tend to buy this author without looking to closely first. It hasn’t burned me yet.

The book was competently written but I can only give one star because of self contradictory social justice non-sense. I had a tough time getting through the first third because of it.

Once again, Elliot Kay has come up with a superb threat for his growing cast of heroes to deal with. This time it’s a family of sorcerers who have been running around for 3200 years, dying, getting reincarnated, and then locating each other so that they could awaken the original personality in its new body and continue with their long-frustrated plan to rule everything. The modern world has made them much stronger because they can now actually get to each other wherever they happen to be around the globe.

Alex, Rachel, and Loreli are alerted to this danger by the return of the jinn, Zafirah, to whom Alex owes a favor. Zafirah is an interesting character, known as the thief of heaven, she once successfully stole something from a heavenly library, but tends to come out slightly on the side of good. That doesn’t mean she is altruistic in her interest in this sorcerer family—she has her own agenda—but she also truly wants to see them stopped.

Once again the supporting heroes get a lot of screen time in this book, especially Onyx, who has a very good storyline. There is a major party in the middle of the book in which tons of bad guys have come together to plot the end of the world and frankly I thought the story dragged quite a bit for much of it, but the secrets revealed here make it worth hanging in there. The fate of the world is on the line, plus we discover the roots of yet another plot for future novels.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of this novel in terms of the overall series is the question of what is going on with the majority of the angel leadership. The Dominion of Vancouver chooses not to take action, allegedly because he doesn’t believe Loreli. His angels know that vampires, werewolves, and much much more are in Vancouver but choose to ignore this just as the original Dominion did in Seatle, and others do around the world. It really makes us wonder why so many Dominions are preventing the heavenly host from fighting back against all of the encroaching evil. It looks to me like Kay may be setting the stage for a second rebellion in heaven which I’m sure our heroes will be right in the middle of stopping.

2-Stars for the first third of the book and 4-Stars for the last half.

Did Kay have a falling out with his editor? The first third of the book is so full of pointless filler as to be almost totally irrelevant to the story. I think Kay has fallen in love with the characters so much he thinks every moment of their day-to-day banter is worth preserving for posterity. Same with the gratuitous sex that goes on for page after page. If a scene doesn't advance the plot, develop the characters, or build the setting, then it's fluff.

As to the rest of the book, it's good but hampered by an ensemble cast that is getting too large to handle... for the author as well as the reader. In this case, it is understandable since Onyx finding a true family is one of the main themes.

The angelic politics, that are foreshadowed, makes me keen to continue the series. Although I would have liked to see the showdown between Racheal and the Canadian douche-angel after he failed to act on critical information. Maybe that's how the next book starts?

*Warning, this book contains adult themes.

This is by far the worst book from Elliott Kay, that I've read so far. He seemed to betray most of his characters in this book. He had them make decisions that they wouldn't have made in the first 3 books of the series. I hope that this is just an outlier, and not where this story is going.

Excellent continuation of the series

This is book 4. If you're here and haven't read the other three then go do that now. I'll wait here. Are you back? Weren't they great? Book four is more of the same. Alex and supporting cast are great and dealing with a thing in the usual way. Also, great opening scene. I loved it all.

I write this with a heavy heart as I was a big fan of the series and was really liked these books they were easy to get through and they were just fun. I waited for the four book for a couple of months.

But this book is by far the weakest.

As other have set the start focuses on a poltical rally that the main character is start a fight now this bothers me for 3 reasons one it doesnt add anything to the story, it doesnt say anything interesting or new about rasicm, and the third is alex has the memories of dozens of lifetimes being from times were racial issues and politics were completely different he would understand better than anyone alive that your background can cause stereotypes and how to inform people and actually get people to change their incorrect believes. No it took the easy route of fight the dumb people.

Another big flaw is the cast is growing when it should be getting smaller or at least changing as Alex goes through different parts of his life. And since this book is about Oxyn this could have been great just having 6 people the mains Oxyn molly and I cant spell her name but the person Alex has a deal with.

There is a lot of fluff in this story some that really shows the flaws in heaven but most of it is unneed I think. I am doing the audiobook and I think at least 3 hours could be cut though if you wanted you could get around 5 out.

I dont want to spoil to much more so I will just say one last small thing. In book 2 Laurael and Rachel talk about how they will found a way to stop him from dying again. But this time it seems like everyone is cool with him just reincarnation again and just restarting. Though the book says there will be come changes to his self when he comes back.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Interesting story. Builds on some threads from previous volumes. Is filled to the brim with the authors politics so your mileage may vary.

What irked me was the multiple threads introduced at the end of the book for future installments. Some that will most likely never bear fruit. Some were a nice epilogue. Especially the one for a newly introduced character. But the others felt more like they were just there.

Still a more positive reading experience than negative.

Show, don’t tell

I’m pretty disappointed in this book.

I’m ok with a book that has a message, even one I don’t necessarily agree with, but the message gets in the way of this story.

Instead of character monologues blatantly directed at the reader Mr Kay should try to illustrate his point with the structure of the story and the conflicts and obstacles the characters need to overcome.

Couldn't stand the liberal political slant of the book

The disparaging remarks about the U.S..
The continuous literalism through the book just got to be too much.
I won't be reading any thing by this author.

I love the series

So much that I subscribe to his patreon.
He offers short stories most of which are related to and as fun as the books he has published so I recommend to pay it the visit.

What I like the most about the Good Intentions is its characters are alive and plots are plausible as far as it can be as a harem fantasy erotica. I seldom see such value in the harem town and when I see it I really appreciate it. It is the most important and the closest element to sufficient condition to fully emerge yourself into the story.
The dialogue is perfect. So many harem fantasy novels have so poor dialogue that keep reminding you that these characters are not real and written. We all know that harem situation is delusional so it needs setting the world bent in favor of the mc. Whether that setting is realistic or logical is not as important as how characters act with it. In Good Intentions series Alex and his lovers keep talking about relationships and boundaries like they are in real relationships and like they are real people. They have their doubts, self-consciousness, longings, hang-ups and etc. Not only that but the exact dialogue of the conversations they have seems like they have intelligence of their seeming status(well not exactly for a demon and angel. I mean who can have and describe such of beings who lived thousands years? But he kind of manages well enough to buy it with secrets and stuff). And how Alex's friends react to his situation is also well written with deliberation. They are not just trophy harem heroines and dudes who are there to praise the success of mc.

I also like that it deals with love with sincerity like romance novels should. Like I said it gives the plausibility. Besides that it also serves you well satisfying your base desires. I believe you read harem novels because you want to be loved. Very much loved. Seemingly unconditionally and unlimitedly. So every attractive females in such fictions want to jump on you with no apparent reasons and build-ups. That's okay because I read for it too, but with enough build-ups it gives satisfaction much better. Like you can believe the love is real and you are loved for real. Reading fictions is for experiencing it vicariously right? And by focusing on love itself Kay did a good job of offering a chance to experience it. And how he deals with love also gave me lessons like I could think about it with consideration. I know it sounds silly but good eroticas are not different from good romance novels and I haven't seen many romance novels this good. Especially when it comes to erotic aspect of love. How lust and love is not separable. How you accept your partner just as he or she is and their desires as they are. All the talks about boundaries, resposibilities and carefulness not to hurt anyone. Real love is described in such things. And while reading it I wish I could have relationship like that(not with plural). You know you want to meet someone with whom you can be so much dirtier.

And it has good sense of humor. I like the joke about atheists in heaven. It also has good plots, exciting ventures, great touch of erotic scenes(romantic and sensual at the same time). I usually don't like many changes of point of views but it's well compensated by good plots and very enjoyable characters. All his friends are fun and live. I love each and all of them.

As you noticed English is not my native language. I wrote the review this long because there was so much I wanted to tell (I could've wrote much longer with my native language) and I really want anybody who by chance reads my review give it a try. It's published a while ago but the series is not appropriated enough. And I'm not saying it just for the writer. It'd be good for you too. It's worth.

I wanted to read and review book 4 as soon as it was published but I was caught up with something (job stuff) and one of my hang-ups is I have to solely focus on them when I read or watch good stories. And I'm happy and satisfied now that I finished it but sad that I have to wait for more. I really hope there is more to come.

If you liked the series please visit his patreon. Like I said it has short stories which are very fun and help you know the characters in the series more, and off course they have smuts. Besides that he also offers some backgrounds of the stories he writes. Please give it a try. Help the good author keep up the good work. We readers always need more of them.

This series is so flipping great. I have especially found enjoyment from reading negative reviews of these books which just made me want to read the next book in the series more. What really shocked me about these books is the plot. This series is essentially urban fantasy erotica and both parts of that are super engaging.

The relationships are surprisingly authentic and satisfying, and I am enjoying the character development of every single character in the main cast. I love the F/F relationships in the book and was particularly impressed that those felt authentic (Onyx is my favorite <3). Fingers crossed that there will be M/M relationships as well as representation of other gender identities and sexual orientations.

The urban fantasyness of these books is also excellent. I sometimes find with urban fantasy that the campiness and default into certain troupes annoys me but this felt unique. Especially that vampires are treated like dirt bags. I’m a sucker for past life stuff and found it really cool that got explored more.

Gah. So good. I’ve laughed out loud so many times. My polyamorous heart is all fluttery. And Tess Irondale as narrator is superb.

Higher Rating out of Loyalty

This series is one of the more entertaining around, I always look forward to the next installment, even now. However, this effort was below expectations.
First, the good: all of the characters are involved and still quite likable. Alex is a great main character and the glue that holds everyone else together.
The are still adult situations, how could there not be? But the author didn’t dwell on the details, which helped move the storyline along. I mean sometimes less is more.
What I could have done without: there’s a few PC “woke” elements introduced that took away some of the reason many of us read fantasy in the first place.
I seldom watch TV anymore and hardly ever the national news, letting some of these elements incorporated into my favorite stories was disappointing.
The story was solid, although not as good as those in the past, but everything’s not a home run right?
If you’re a fan (like me) you’re most likely still a fan.
Here’s to hoping the next installment returns to it’s former glory.

I definitely enjoyed this book more than the one that came before, the gang expand their activity into international waters (pun intended) and we are seeing how the repercussions of the actions they took in the past had a wider effect that they believe. At this point I think the author has no idea what to do with his Taylor character given how her role keeps changing without a fixed pattern. And everything of that nature shown tends to be put in a forgiving nature. In resume I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would, it definitely regained something that Book 3 lost.

Great story

Poly adult urban fantasy
Love the series and great to see another book out. Unlike most independent writers, I found no mistakes, which is a rarity.
This is 4th book in the series, and makes references to prior events. Some statements by characters may even be confusing without thar prior knowledge. So if this book has caught your interest, stop and start with the first book, "Good Intentions." This has a lot of action and seriosly skilled magic users. Bad guys aplenty.
The warnings are a hoot, and a hallmark of the series.
I read this pretty much straight through. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommended series.

My favorite of the four and hoping for more of this series (with 3 being my least favorite). I will have to look at other books by this author as well.

I like that team are becoming more proactive and chasing down bad guys. I like the fact they have this team and you are not afraid to use it. Add to that an interesting new member in the ghost queen. Z is ok, but I think there was too much mystery about her role to make her interesting. I found I didn't really care when the author plays "hard to get" on the characters motivations. Interesting relationship choices also, not sure if that is good or not, but interesting.

Just as good as the previous installments

I was skeptical about purchasing this 4th installment after reading some of the reviews and now I am so happy I didn't let them sway me. This was so good. Honestly I don't know what anyone could be upset about. The author doesn't shove anything new down our throats. No homosexual scenes were ever introduced just a person coming out in a short by the way reveal. I really thought there would have been something it wouldn't have liked in this book judging by the reviews and there honestly wasn't I enjoyed it from start to finish. I look forward to any other book you come out with. Love this series so much.

The good book great Forth instalment

It has a decent plot and lots of good character moments and help develop the World more I really like the main protagonist the only problem I had with the book it was a small one with the glory isation of social justice Warriors because most of them and real life are just spoilt children but that said it was done thankfully enough that it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the book overall it was a great book with Greek characters

Not a terrible effort, but felt “preachy” in a few (too many) parts. The big boss battle at the end was not the author’s best described work. Seemed too focused on moves and left the overview a little light. Tess did a great job, but also misfired some pronunciations. She’s still one of the best performers out there though. Not sorry I listened to this, but likely will only listen again if I do a reread for an impending book 5.

Great read!

The fourth book of this series is well worth the read. Again the pace, action and storyline held up and was excellent! A little bit of over explaining on how the love relationships work between the characters, but not as much of an issue as the first two books. The departure from the MC as the only hero is questionable and there was a bit of social engineering forced on the reader, but overall a great read!

I enjoyed this book and the whole series thus far

The headline suggests that there are additional books THAT is just wishful thinking on my part. However, the end did not diminish my hopes. I did not rate each individual book as I read them back to back to back. I strongly suggest starting at book 1 since it provides the back story. But the books can be read individually. Great stories.
