Trillions of dollars’ worth of gold. Enough to launch an ambitious nation to a position of global primacy... permanently.
It lies on the floor of the Pacific Ocean in hotly contested territory, and it's discovery might be the spark that finally ignites a powder keg of long-simmering political and military antagonism.
China races to claim the territory and the gold, but corrupt leaders within the power-hungry nation commit increasingly brazen acts of violence; willing to risk destabilizing the region, and even a world war, for the chance at finally achieving world preeminence.
Commodore Joe Glass and the US Navy move swiftly to intervene. Submarines and SEALs deploy with haste, bringing cutting-edge technology, naval assets, and highly advanced fighting units into an increasingly tense standoff. Their mission: to prevent a global war and to protect the sovereignty and safety of those caught in the middle of the historic power-grab.
But the enormous treasure lies in some of the deepest waters on the planet. Laying claim is only the first step. The gold must be retrieved. And when disaster strikes, adversaries and enemies must come together for one of the most spectacular and dramatic deep-sea rescues ever attempted.
Former US Navy submarine commander George Wallace and award winning author Don Keith are the authors of the novel HUNTER KILLER, now a major motion picture starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman.
Warshot is the sixth book in the Hunter Killer Series.
Born and raised in Eastern Ohio, Commander Wallace received his commission in the US Navy and a degree in engineering from The Ohio State University. After the obligatory and memorable interview with Admiral Rickover, he was accepted into the nuclear power and submarine communities. He served on two of Admiral Rickover’s famous “Forty One for Freedom”, the USS John Adams SSBN 620 and the USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN 624, during which time he made nine one-hundred-day deterrent patrols through the height of the Cold War.
Commander Wallace served as Executive Officer on the Sturgeon class nuclear attack submarine Spadefish. Spadefish and all her sisters were decommissioned during the downsizing that occurred in the 1990′s. The passing of that great ship served as the inspiration for “Final Bearing.”
Commander Wallace then commanded the Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine USS Houston SSN 713 from February 1990 to August 1992. During this tour of duty he worked extensively with the SEAL community developing SEAL/submarine tactics. Under his command, the Houston was awarded the CIA Meritorious Unit Citation.
Commander George Wallace retired to the civilian business world in 1995, after twenty-two years of service on nuclear submarines.
Commander Wallace lives with his wife, Penny, in Alexandria, Virginia.
I have come to rely on Wallace and Keith for thoroughly entertaining military thrillers, and Warshot proved to be even more than I had hoped for. The action and intrigue in this story kept me up late into the night just to see what happened next. Along with entertainment, the Wallace and Keith stories military descriptions and e character interactions so realistic I find myself reliving my Navy career. If you enjoy military thrillers, Warshot is well worth reading and may get you addicted to the Wallace and Keith stories.
A decent story line and multiple plot twists, that unlike other novels in this series. Are actually finished at the end of the book. Another ineffective president to root against, no surprise in the narrative. Most of the original characters are brought back and progress nicely from book to book. But after six novels there really are not too many more countries we can pick a fight with us. This novel really shows the research and attention to detail missing from previous novels. I do look forward to the next novel
4/5. Yet another very interesting naval thriller by these authors. Their first-hand knowledge of and experience with naval weapons, equipment, situations, and tactics contribute greatly to the story. Once again, China acts aggressively in the highly contested waters and on the critically situated islands off its coast. Upping the stakes on this cruise is the discovery of a massive deposit of gold on the ocean floor in the middle of everything. It could make individuals billionaires, nations invincible, and even bankrupt the world’s economy.
Submarines make me nervous, even when it is reading about them! The tension is great in this saga and every page brings on another issue. The South China Sea is the setting and a research vessel discovers a lode of gold in the Tonga Trench. That is just one factor in the struggle between the U.S. Navy and the Chinese. Allow enough time to keep reading until the end!
Again the author introduces the reader to another story about the submarine service and the US Navy and the SEALS teams who serve to preserve the world 🌎peace that we enjoy. China and her military set in motion events that are determined to cause serious harm to Taiwan and ultimately bring about a conflict that has extreme consequences for everyone involved, and which can only be stopped by the bravery of those who willingly stand in harms way.
Quite enjoyed this one but I can't put my finger on why it was better than the others I've read in the series - Maybe I've got used to the characters. It was good anyway, same sort of plot as previous books in the series although the involvement of China and the ever present issues of Taiwan along with greed and gold resulted in an interesting plot. Onwards to the next book in the series, 'Silent Running'
Warshot is a well written novel without errors, featuring extremely detailed descriptions. But at times I feel the technical explanations were over done and not required in the story. It does illustrate how the "suits" behind their desks of all countries should let the military do their jobs as trained and not let their self-centered egos get in the way of leading a country.
WALLACE and Keith continue to spin fantastic tales. The Wards are back, taking on the bad guys. Wonderful story that just kept pulling. I will say that it felt like this one wrapped up a bit too quickly, but still fantastic. Great detail and character development. Looking forward to the next book!
3.5 Stars Maybe. Look I wanted to like this book but the premise was very misleading and I spent most of the book confused due to it. Like the story was good and I might have liked it more if the book had a different blurb. Also there was a lot of new characters, and one of them was 100% a Mary Sue which I did not appreciate
What can I say, but WOW! This story continues to hold my hopes for the series afloat. It has the characters (the ones from others in the series & some new ones) & the plot were out of this world. Overall, it was an superb tale. Kudos to Mr. Wallace & Mr. Keith.
If your looking for a WWII type submarine story set in today - this is your book. From the relationships between HQ and the sub, to the personal relationships among the members of the submarine community, it harkens back to heyday of the silent service. All this and a great thriller
Power is all about the search for control and wealth
This story tries to tell how power is controlled in Non democratic countries and democratic ones can survive even with a leader who is weak and a good support team is able to play to his ego.
Can't wait for the next book. Interesting new technologies, real and make believe. Greedy military and politicians at it again causing innocent lives to be lost. A weak American president avoiding conflict to get re-elected.
Just a little too much blustering and detailed descriptions for me. I would recommend any boat sailor read all of their books. Good submarine stories are hard to come by.
I’ve enjoyed all of the books by Keith and Wallace and this one was no exception. However it was very complicated. I prefer been Porter in False assurances, threat bias and subversive addiction!
Character interaction was great. The situations they find themselves in are believable and riviting. Action is continues and dividing. Plot twist and turns are not all ways predictable.
As a former spook submariner, I relived many experiences that made me want to serve yet again! This whole series is accurate in so many ways that give a sense of tangible reality to those who never served. Hats off to Keith and Watson!
I wasn't as impressed with this book as much as the past novels. This one had to many storylines going at once and none of them were really attention grabbers like in the past.
Another mediocre book where the US Navy sub fleet comes out on top. I really wish that the author did a bit of research. FYI, the NRO doesn't do analysis of satelite imagery. They launch and fly them. NGA goes the analysis.
The writers bring to life what was happening in submarines. It showed realistic forms of what a submarine could. The gold six miles down also brought you into what greed can do to a person or country
Really good story. Very plausible technical military tactics. I enjoyed this story very much. Narrated very well. I will be reading other titles in this series.
