Silver Spells by Kate Moseman
Midlife Elementals series #1. Paranormal women’s fiction.
Luella Campbell can’t believe she just lost her job. And she wasn’t even told why! Years of good reviews and she suddenly out of a job. How is she going to pay for her daughter’s college tuition? The day get weird when a silvery dog runs into the workplace, causes a whirlwind of a mess and dashes back outside. And only Luella and her two besties even saw the dog. What the heck? Following the dog, Luella ends up with wings from a mural. Wings. On her back. That she can magically manipulate! A bird hangs out. She finds the mural painter and remembers he was a grade school classmate and then finds out her besties have magic too.
Can it get any crazier?
Why, yes. It can.
Her mother has magic. Her mother’s friends have magic. It’s a whole community!

A wild ride for this empty nester. She’s just grateful it all started after her daughter left for college. Lots of fun surprises and clearly more to come as they are just learning this new world of magic.
Thoroughly enjoyable. I laughed out loud several times. I want to read more. I think this could easily be a rabbit hole I’ll go down. Only 4 books. I can mange that. Maybe.

The tale begins when we meet Luella Campbell, a media specialist. She’s been with her current employee since well forever, so she is shocked when she they fire her. Worse, she is seeing dogs and birds others can’t. She can’t even catch her breath before discovering she has magical powers of her own. Where the heck is the manual and is something in the water?

This was a fun set up to the series. I loved Lucella. She is in her forties, divorced, an empty nester and a confident size sixteen. She bakes when nervous and whips up all kinds of glutton free desserts. A new town mural with possible clues to her new powers leads her to an old love.

We get a side of romance while Lucella tries to figure out what is happening to her. She tests her powers and learns how to deal with her animal friends. Her friends are supportive, but we soon learn they are keeping secrets. Her momma is one strange bird and we soon learn why.

The story feels like a cozy as we try to figure out what is happening to and around our protagonist. Not sure if the series will feature her friends next or continue with Lucella. Either way, I am curious enough to return to Sparkle Beach.

Xe Sands narrates and was perfect for capturing the light vibe of this tale and each of the unique characters. I’ve enjoyed her narrations before, and she offers a wide range of female and male voices while capturing the tone of the overall story.

It was ok

This just wasn’t the book for me. I did finish it. The writing was a little corny, the storyline staggered, and the plot was lacking. I feel like with a little more effort, this book could be good. With a lot, it could be great.

This book surprised me from the second I started it to the last page and for the longest time I didn't know whether I even liked it. I ended up more than liking it however, because it brings a fresh and unique twist to the Paranormal Women's Fiction genre, well to the supernatural mystery genre in general, to be honest. My only misgivings with this book is that it's basically one long world establishing chapter. It sets us up for future books and I am excited to see what they will face.
I cannot say more without spoilering some plot twists, but I highly encourage you to give this a twirl and stick with it! Very unique! Loved it

Boring, spoiler alert....

I don't usually leave bad reviews, but this book didn't make a lot sense. Nothing was explained about the history of the magic. It made absolutely no sense why Queenie had to pretend to fire Luella. It also made no sense that an air witch getting her powers from her mother, another air witch, caused a fire witch to lose her powers. Wouldn't it have made more sense for the new fire witch to cause the old one to lose her powers since the the old fire witch was supposed to pass her powers to the new one??? None of it made much sense, and nothing happened in the book of interest to make you want to read the next one. It took me several days to get through it because it couldn't hold my interest. I almost gave up finishing it several times, but I can't stand to not finish a book once I've started it. And I kept thinking, something has got to happen. It didn't, except relief to finally read the last page.

I am not twenty-five years old. But i read a lot of books with twenty somethings thinking they will never meet mr.right while somehow working at their dream job. So I find it very refreshing when a strong female lead is my age, has baggage and a writer who knows it's never too late to try something new.
Luella needs a new job, misses her daughter, and tries not to bother anyone. Magic helps those who helps themselves??
I enjoy all of Kate Moseman's novels, she writes with creativity and heart, and yes a little bit of magic in a real world setting, You can not go wrong spending a few hours reading a Kate Moseman novel.

Midlife just got magical and weird for an empty-nester divorcee who just lost her job and boyfriend, but discovered a new affinity for animals no one else could see. Paranormal women’s fiction is a fairly new to me genre mash up that I am coming to really enjoy so I was tickled to try a new to me author and series narrated by a stellar storyteller.

Luella has been working at the same company since high school and anticipated working there until retirement when she suddenly and inexplicably was let go from the marketing staff. Divorced for many years and with a daughter away at college, Luella has to find a new job and soon. Meanwhile, a bizarre change of circumstances has the rest of her attention. The sight of a silvery ghost-like dog in the office and a rush of wind that only she and her best friends can see is the beginning of a mysterious magic she seems to possess. As other animals appear under odd circumstances and gifts as well, she knows she needs to figure out what is going on quickly. But, where to start? Her quest involves her two besties, an old high school crush and her quirky biker mama.

Silver Spells was an engaging introduction to a new series and I enjoyed meeting Luella and her friends. I found the inclusion of her ex who is not the cliché, a daughter with food health issues, her full figure just being her and nothing to dent her confidence, good times with her gal pals, flirty meet cute with Raphael, and her very mature approach to life a refreshing set of circumstances that added up to a right cozy situation.

Silver Spells is definitely on the easy going side and doesn’t introduce more to the plot than getting to know the setting, characters, and Luella’s new circumstances. Perhaps it gets more intense as the series progresses or maybe it stays gentle like a cozy mystery. Either way, I liked what I got and would definitely keep going with more of the series.

Xe Sands is a narrator that I’m long familiar with and I was able to settle into her narration work with no effort. I thought she matched up with the style of the writing and tone of the book and she had the character voices down pat. I hope she has the narration of the whole series. She made this high quality production even better.

All in all, this first in series is off to a satisfying start and I was well entertained. I can recommend it to those who enjoy stories focused on fun female friendships, a paranormal element, a bit of mystery and pinch of romance sprinkled in for good measure.

Interesting story about midlife magic and mayhem. Luella is 45 yr old single mom divorcee who mysteriously develops magical powers. She and her two best friends start having unexplainable incidents. I liked this paranormal audiobook. Narrator Xe Sands did a great job with the audio.

This book took a unique take on the women’s paranormal genre. A lot of paranormal books are geared toward a younger crowd where the characters are teens/mid 20’s, which can be fantastic, but it was cool to see it transpire into a different age group. This is the first book in this series, the story itself, was about a group of three besties discovering who they truly are while navigating regular life with a touch of clean romance. I look forward to hearing more in this world and what could happen. I really enjoyed the narration.

Three 40+ Friends Finally Find Their Magic

This is an easy reading story about three friends, in their forties, who discover their magical abilities when one of the three, Luella, gets fired from her job.

Good writing, few editing errors and an overall imaginative story but missing that edge. I would have liked to see the characters have more depth, everything felt too superficial and pat. As the reader I didn’t experience any feelings of tension or malevolence needed at pivotal moments even when Raphael is thrown from the wall. The concept of the story is creative, for example, the wings on the wall was a fantastic idea so it was disappointing that the connection between Raphael and Luella’s wings wasn’t further explored. Raphael could have explained his feelings about the wings as he painted them, what his inspiration was, what he felt seeing them transformed from wall art to reality; he could have asked to touch them to compare them to his imaginings and to question if he could do that with other paintings. Reading about that would have given me, the reader, better visuals of what the wings looked like while giving Raphael more depth. Exploring Luella’s childhood with her Mama (who’s initial description is so intriguing) would have gone far to give Mama three dimensional form rather than her just being a woman with no personality who rides a motorcycle.

On the plus side, literally, I was impressed with the author using the dress purchase for the art show to reveal that Luella was a proud size 16 and I liked the way she allowed the character to embrace her body and sensuality without regrets. I think this was the first time (in hundred of books) I have ever read this so congratulations on empowering the larger size woman.

A promising writer who is unfurling her own wings and will be flying higher as more books are written.

"Silver Spells" by Kate Moseman is the first in the Midlife Elementals series. Luella is having a wild day. First, she is fired from the media specialist job at a sunscreen factory that she has worked at for many years. Then she breaks up with her boyfriend. She starts seeing a dog that seems to blow things around with some type of wind power. She feels like she is going crazy and goes out with her friends to check out painted murals for a distraction. They come across a mural with painted black wings on it, and Luella goes to get her picture in front of it, and she feels something shift within her. She wants answers, so she looks up to see who painted the murals and sees that it is Raphael that she knew from years ago. This book was a great introduction to what is going to come next in the series. Kate has a great writing style, and I look forward to reading others by her.

I listened to the audiobook version, and enjoyed this fun story of magic and the power of love.

I let my imagination run with it, and it was fun imagining the characters with their powers. Nothing heavy, just a sweet, fun story.

I did think the characters were a bit nonchalant about the discovery of their powers, but it didn’t hurt the overall story. I did, however, want to see what happened to Mrs. Milifleur (sp). It was odd to see her get away with what she did without consequences, even from the magical world, or what trouble she may/will cause because of the motives behind her actions. Perhaps that’s a story for another time.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun story you can enjoy when you want to get away from the world’s troubles and let your mind wander for a bit.

This book was a joy to read. Things start off kind of sad, but it is short lived as unexpected magic begins to shake up Luella’s life. I loved the acceptance of the magic by Luella and those she cared about and that they just rolled with it. This was a fun story and I look forward to more - I really hope there is more!

It’s been a while since I’ve read a paranormal story that’s more fun than angst, and Silver Spells showed me that I really need to make a point of reading them regularly. This one has been great for relaxing, for a bit of escapism. In this crazy world we find ourselves in, it’s nice to imagine how a bit of magic could make things better.
Silver Spells gives us empty nester Luella Campbell. I can certainly identify with that, and it was refreshing to find a book with a main character closer to my own age. I also enjoyed Luella’s relationship with her mother and how she still needed and valued her mother’s advice – perhaps even more so with everything going on in her life. This is the first in the Midlife Elementals series, so a lot of the book introduces the characters and the world the author has created. That’s not to say there isn’t a storyline; there certainly is. What I’m getting at is I enjoyed it all. The world-building is done organically – we learn about this world along with Luella, so we’re not dealing with big info dumps, which is a big plus, in my opinion. This author is also handy with wit and funny quips, which is great for keeping a good pace.
The story caught me a little off guard with its flowery prose, and I’ll admit that I wasn’t sure about all the Southern witticisms at first. Even as a Southern girl myself, they seemed to be a bit over the top. By the time I made it through a handful of chapters, it wasn’t a thing at all. It just felt like that was Luella, and I didn’t expect any different, which I think comes down to a combination of Kate Moseman’s character building and Xe Sands’ narration.
Speaking of, I think this is my first experience with Xe Sands, but it won’t be my last. I don’t think Kate Moseman could’ve chosen a more perfect voice for Luella. She lent a charm to the character that I feel may have been missing with a different voice. The more I listened, the more I felt like I was hearing Luella.
All in all, Silver Spells is a witty and fun introduction to a promising series. There’s magic, friendship, family, a bit of romance, and even some danger as a taste of the possibilities for where this series might go. I will definitely be watching for whatever comes next.

Luella Campbell having a rough few days. Her daughter recently moved away to go to college. Then Luella is fired without explanation from a company she’s worked for since she was in high school. Finally, she breaks up with her boyfriend who really isn’t as great as she thought. Meanwhile, strange things keep happening to Luella, like the appearance of a silver and white dog whose tail can blow up a disruptive blast of wind and a crow that seems to be following her around.

Silver Spells is an entertaining entry into the paranormal women’s fiction genre. The first book of the Midlife Elementals series is shared from the first person POV of protagonist Luella. Luella may be entering mid-life (she's 45) and has experienced a few bumps in the road, but she's not beaten down by life. I enjoy her enthusiasm and heart. She is genuine and caring. We follow her as she and her friends discover they suddenly have magical powers. It takes some time for the gang to piece it all together, but they embrace all of the strangeness right from the start, always running to, rather than away from, the magics.

The story is mostly about Luella uncovering her apparent destiny, with very little external conflict. Despite the lack of a mystery to solve or big bad chasing Luella, the book moves along at an enjoyable pace. Like Luella, I wanted to know why these things are happening to her and what it all means. I also enjoyed the blossoming romance between Luella and her high school crush, Raphael. I’m intrigued by the young neighbor vying for Luella’s attention, and I appreciate that the book ends with hints of troubling heading their way.

Narration: Shared via Luella’s first person POV, the narrator of the book is Luella. Ms. Sands performs using her distinct voice, which I love. She’s got a deep feminine voice that is somewhat soft and slightly raspy. Ms. Sands changes her tone for the characters’ dialogue, deepening for males, adding slight accents when called for, creating a unique set of voices for the cast.

I really enjoyed listening to Silver Spells. The tale provides a background and sets up an interesting mythology for the series. I love the familial and friendship bonds which are explored throughout the book. I look forward to finding out more about Luella and friends’ powers as the series progresses.

My Rating: B+
Narration: B+

Fabulous Story & Narration! A Magical Delight!
Silver Spells
A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (Midlife Elementals, Book 1)
By: Kate Moseman
Narrated by: Xe Sands

This book is an enjoyable delight, I am new to Kate Moseman’s work, I enjoyed her writing style and characters and storylines she created, they are interesting and imaginative. The story grabbed my attention right from the start, it is the type of book you do not want to out down because you want to know what happens next. It is the first book of the series so it also lays out the foundation for the rest of the series. The characters are likable and easy to relate to and connect with, Luella Campbell, was an ordinary woman working an office job as a media specialist one minute then an unemployed woman the next with strange things happening all around her. Turns out she is not alone, the same thing is happening to her two friends. I loved the premise of this book, not your average midlife crisis here, just three women coming into their own, that is their own magical powers. I loved how everything played out in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, some wonderful humor, twists and turns, heartfelt emotions and some romance. Kate Moseman, thank you for this enjoyable and entertaining story, I am looking forward to what comes next as you continue to build up this magical world with these fabulous characters.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Xe Sands is a talented narrator and versatile voice artist. She brings these characters to life, giving each their own distinct voice making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. Her portrayal of each character is spot on, she grasps each character’s persona and plays the role with perfection, sounding believable and just as I picture them to sound. She sets the perfect tone for the story, captures all the character’s emotions and projects them into her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the fabulous listen🎧

I really love the premise of this story. A single mid 40s professional that’s fired from her job, without given a reason, sorts through the stress of loss of income while trying to help support her daughter in college. While looking for a job, her and her besties stumble upon a pretty mural (like the tourist Nashville photo op wings) that seems to unlock magical powers for them all. There’s a hint of real life stressors. A hint of romance. A hint of best friend and familial bonds. A hint of a villain. You get the gist. I like the story; I wanted at least one aspect of it to have more power behind it. It’s still a cute cozy read that’s perfect for a fall afternoon.

The narration of the audiobook was good. The narrator did a good job navigating several different characters who didn’t have much to differentiate them vocally.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kate Moseman for this audiobook ARC.

This is such a cute, cozy whimsical book with a witchy vibe. Luella gets fired from her sunscreen job without a good reason. When a white and silver mythical dog goes throu her workplace, Luella gets her magical powers, and her 2 besties do too. But nobody is able to see these dogs and singin birds that Luella is seein plus lots of wind. Luella bakes when she is nervous and has an amazing best friends Rose and Pepper, Luella mom is a motorcycle mom, lol. Luella is in her forties divorced and single mom of a college girl, Lily. Luella goes to a new town, Sparkle Beach, and runs into an old high-school crush Raphael, a painter of the towns murals. I love how all 3 friends help each other with their powers to get better at them. This is a cute magical book that has some drama and a lil humor and some romance. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

I was given a copy by the publisher via NetGalley (Thank U), and all my opinions are my own.

midlife is not the end

I very much enjoyed it from the beginning all the way to the end. Small town life. One mature woman in her peak of life. OH. Let me add that she now has a little something extra. A group of women friends and family. Add to that attitudes, motorcycles, magic, and a new way of life.

Xe gave the audio a little something magical with her voice. I look forward to hearing more from her and seeing more of Kate's work also.

Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Entertaining Wonderful characters

This one is meh. There are friendships and relationships that are enjoyable. But, why the women call themselves "witches" when they are not working "spells" but controlling elements is totally beyond me. Also, some of the choices and coincidences are too contrived for me. There is no real bad guy here, just a momentary difference of opinion that is dismissed far too easily for me.

The ideas herein are good. The execution is lacking. I think the story could be developed much more effectively.

A Waste of Time

It took me a very long time to finish this book. If i wasn’t trying to finish all the books I have open, I wouldn’t have finished it. This book is boring and not well written. The characters aren’t well developed and there isn’t much of a storyline.. It’s like you just keep reading waiting for something to happen that never does. I’m glad I didn’t pay for this book. I don’t recommend it

This is book one in Ms. Moseman's Midlife Elementals series. A good introduction to three best friends who in their midlife inherit magic. Luella is the main character in this book and has inherited her mother's air magic. I like Luella who seems to be down-to-earth and practical and Rose and Pepper balance her out with their different perspectives. Although this is Luella's story it is also the basis for this new series so there is a lot of information about the community and a few hints about the adventures that will be coming in the future.

It's about how Luella finds her powers and her familiar and gets wings. She has some amazing friends and reconnects with a crush from high school

I really loved this story! Its lively and enjoyable. It had just enough of mystery that it tickled my grey matter. The characters were great! These women are older which is nice and they have a wonderful camaraderie with each other. Real friendship! I loved them all.

I am not usually a fan of witch stories. But this one really eased me into it. The story flowed very nicely. I loved that I couldn't figure out what was happening or why. Zephyr and Midnight really threw me for a loop. Racking my brain trying to figure out why and what their purpose. I loved finding out. Plus that Raphael?? What a wonderful add to the cast.

I listened to this on audio. Xe Sands did an amazing job narrating this. I could feel all the characters wonder and emotions. Well done!

This story is definitely one heck of a ride, complete with one zany crew of characters. I enjoyed the unique characters, though at times, they felt more like “create the cookiest character possible for no reason and toss them in just cause.” The plot was interesting, though I felt a bit letdown by the ending and lack of catching the bad guy so to speak. But the plot was light, and it was definitely more of a “it’s all about the journey/people you travel with” vs. the destination.

My only real complaint was a lack of detail. The side characters weren’t super fleshed out, so a lot of their motivations were unclear, which led to questions about how the magic actually worked, backstories, etc. I definitely got the feeling that some of this was intentional to force you to read the rest of the series and hopefully answer, but it frustrated me not having the knowledge or backstory, and kept me from getting as engaged with the story.

Midlife crisis? Maybe, but discovering you have unusual powers just as you are hitting a mid-life skid is probably not the time to discover them or maybe it is the perfect time to discover them! Hilarious audiobook that is just what is needed to brighten your day. Even better, the main characters are mature intelligent women used to taking on all the problems in their lives. Unfortunately, their problems just got a bit witchier! I am delighted that I found this audiobook as the narrator did an outstanding job of bringing the characters, the events and the twists and turns of this delightfully plotted story to life. This book definitely reads or in my case, listens like an intro into a longer series that promises much more to come and I am here for it!!! I can't wait to join in more antics with this "Ride or Die" bunch of friends. We all need friends like that and I can't wait to read more about them!

I was absolutely delighted to be one of the first people to have the opportunity to listen to and Review this book, as it was only released on Audible on 13.04. 21. Thank you Kate, I feel really privileged to be one of the first and enjoyed your book immensely.

This is the first book in the Midlife Elemental's Series, the narrator XE Sands has a very relaxing voice, which makes the book very easy to listen to as she tells Luella Cambell and her friends story.

This is a really lovely pleasant story of magic love and and friendship. We join Luella her family and friends mortal and magical as Luella and her friends are suddenly get given a gift of magical elemental power's. Their whole world is turned upside down.

A great start to the series and I am looking forward to the rest of it becoming available on Audible so that I can listen to their adventure's, after all they now have magic at their finger tips.
