No matter who you are or what you’ve done, you are never too far gone to find your way back home. This is the concept behind Start Where You Are: How God Meets You in Your Mess, Loves You Through It, and Leads You Out of It by Rashawn Copeland and friend, it is a message everyone needs to hear or be reminded of.

The author uses a 3-step pattern modeled in Jesus’ life and ministry – come up, go in, reach out – along with his own powerful testimony to support the process of lifelong sanctification.* The three movements that kickstarted Jesus’ ministry involved 1.) His baptism by John the Baptist (COME UP), 2.) His 40 days spent in the desert fighting against Satan’s failed attempts to lead Him astray (GO IN), and 3.) His active ministry teaching and leading the disciples, concluding with His death on the cross and resurrection into Heaven (REACH OUT). Copeland relates Jesus’ ministry pattern to the reader this way – “When we come up, God meets us in our mess. When we go in, God loves us through our mess. When we reach out, God leads us beyond our mess.” (pg. 18)

Copeland goes on to encourage the reader that God doesn’t grade on a curve but instead by the cross. Each human being is welcomed as they are so they can be made into who they were meant to be. It’s a decision made available to all and one that takes ongoing action and purposeful intention. God is able to do the work within you, but are you willing to receive it? Choosing to start will guide you closer to the prize of finishing (Philippians 3:14).

The main message of Start Where You Are is grace meets you where you are, but it doesn’t keep you there. Praise Jesus for that! God loves to use messes to refine His people. This is seen throughout scripture and for me, God utilizing the most flawed and imperfect people to fulfill His perfect plans and purposes is the hope in which I anchor my faith. Our Creator turns suffering into songs of joy, but the created must humble themselves first and confess their need for a Savior before crying out to be saved. Amen? AMEN!

Start Where You Are walks through the fruit of the Spirit (each chapter covers a different “fruit”), is full of encouragement, and is supported by the author’s personal story of doubt, depression, addiction, fear and more. Each chapter concludes with a themed recap, guided prayer, and practical questions, tips, or considerations to apply to your life.

Start Where You Are is a fantastic book for a seeker or a new believer. Likewise, it would make a thoughtful gift this holiday season and reminds me a bit of the “old school,” best-selling, Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren because it is relatable to all seasons of life and contains a message all people need to hear.

This book was my first encounter with Rashawn Copeland and you guys, he is the real deal! I give this guy utmost respect for showcasing true humility, transparency and vulnerability. His platform is Jesus and Jesus is all you witness throughout this book. For a seeker, new believer or lukewarm Christian, Start Where You Are is an excellent motivator of spiritual guidance but for the seasoned Christ-follower like myself, this book is the long overdue jolt of spiritual pick-me-up needed after an “ugh” year like 2020.

I suppose that if you have only heard Rashawn Copeland on his podcast (“Scriptures and Stories”) you would think he is relentlessly optimistic, a giver, and someone you’d want to spend some time listening to—and then find yourself being given the space to share your own story to someone who loves hearing about the lives of the friends that he meets—for no one who spent any time around Copeland could not help but become his friend.

But listening to a podcast is one thing, and understanding where Copeland finds his optimism is another. His latest book, Start Where You Are: How God Meets You in Your Mess, Loves You Through It, and Leads You Out of It, is—well, where you can start.

Copeland takes us through his own life-journey of finding out what gives him his center, his joy, his purpose, his hope. He shares his faith in Jesus of Nazareth gladly, openly, and naturally. To Copeland, being connected to God is not only the best thing there is in the world to come, it is a treasure to be enjoyed here and now. By bringing our very selves to Jesus, Copeland says, we can unfold our lives from the pains and wounds that have crumpled us and become joyful, fulfilled, confident people.

This is a book that could be a series of coffee-shop conversations with someone who is deeply in love with his God, the God who is excited to love us, and who wants you to have that same love yourself. It is open and gentle and honest, and is easily consumed in chunks over a cuppa, or as a morning devotional, or even as a book when you have a long journey ahead of you.

Not a single chapter is boring, and they are all filled with Copeland’s joy and personality. He pulls in anecdotes from his own life that help explain not only who he is now, but where he came from and what shaped him.

This is a great book for a lot of people. If you are a long-time Christian, it is a refreshing time of reminders about the goodness of God. If you’re newly introduced to Christ, it is an excellent handbook for discipleship—it provides many excellent directions on what Christians believe and how those beliefs are expressed in practice. And if you’re not yet in the family of God, it can provide a combination of spiritual and logical reasons to introduce yourself to God—who is already waiting to meet you.

Get this book for yourself, and get a few copies for the friends in your life who need a grace note of music.

The hardest step on a long journey is the first step. In Start Where You Are, Rashawn Copeland encourages readers to forget about preparations. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. No need to get it all together first. Wherever you are, start your journey toward God now. And the best part? That first step is all you’ll need.

Rashawn Copelands’s punchy, fast-paced, conversational storytelling and motivating simply cannot be ignored. Reading this book is like sitting down with a friend who’s talking a mile a minute, intent on sharing with you something that’s been on his mind. There’s no drip drip drip of information. Copeland pours it on in bucketloads, intertwining Scripture with personal stories and anecdotes, encouraging readers to pursue God with their whole hearts. Start Where You Are is like an energy drink for the soul.

Copeland works his way through the fruits of the Spirit with chapters on love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, conviction, and self-control. He works out taking that first step, beginning where you are, allows God to take you the rest of the way and help you through your issues. It’s a passionate, heartfelt book that oozes with genuine encouragement every step of the way.

Each chapter ends with a discussion prompt, a prayer, and a practical thing to do. This means you can read Start Where You Are straight through or use as a devotional, taking it one chapter every day or one chapter every week. Nothing that Rashawn says is revolutionary—I mean, it is, but not in the sense that it’s never been said before. In a way, Start Where You Are is elementary. It’s nothing you probably haven’t heard before. It’s Copeland’s tone, the way in which he comes alongside as a cheerleader through the printed word, that makes this stand out. What he is saying is basic, but it’s a needed message.

We can have the tendency to, when we know something so well we know it by rote, that we process it intellectually and not emotionally. Copeland challenges to recapture that emotion and live a passionate life as we grow in Christ day by day. If you’re struggling in your faith, this is what you need to pick you up. If you’re good in your faith, this is your shot in the arm to keep running the race. Simple, solid, and Gospel, Start Where You Are is a refreshing challenge to lay everything down and pursue Christ now.

Copeland was anticipating a career in the NFL when getting shot by a gang member shattered his dreams. Falling into despair and contemplating suicide, he was brought to salvation by the social media post of a friend, a Christian. He encourages us to know that God loves us in our messiness. God invites us up to new life, in to commune with Him, and out to share His love.

Copeland shares wisdom he has learned from his experiences. Don't follow your heart, he writes. Follow God's desire for your heart, reminding us of Prov. 19:21, that man plans what's in his heart but it is God's purposes that prevail. Another good lesson from his experiences is that in our faith walk we will always have questions. Every biblical character who knew, loved and obeyed God, Copeland writes, had questions. Some received answers but some did not. We must trust God because we will never have all the answers.

He also provides some wise suggestions for life, such as, “Yield to the Holy Spirit before you yell at a person.” (75) Yes, there is righteous anger but there is also the command to turn the other cheek. Direction from the Spirit is needed before one acts. And my favorite, “Self control is not about managing ourselves but allowing God to manage us.” (115) Wow. That made me stop and think for quite a while.

Copeland includes a good section at the end of each chapter to help incorporate that chapter's truth. He includes a statement to think about, a suggestion for prayer, and a practical suggestion to live out the truth. Copeland's writing style is great. He uses good stories to illustrate his teaching.

I really appreciate the teaching in this encouraging book. It's a good one for Christians who think they are so messed up God does not love them and will not use them. “God doesn't look for perfection,” Copeland writes, “only a willingness to follow Him.” (102) I highly recommend this book.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the author. My comments are an independent and honest review.

“Taking the Next Step Pause and Ponder Whatever shame is keeping you from a fresh start with God, whatever old baggage is dragging you down, whatever broken pieces are in your heart, start right there. Yes! Start right there—with God this time. Press into Prayer Be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Eph. 5:1–2 ESV) Lord, I thank You for sharing Your unfailing hope and for a fresh start where yesterday’s worries aren’t being carried into today. I pray that You continue to order my steps and guide my mind. May I surround myself with Your truth. Your Word. Your wisdom. Your love. Your peace. Prove to Be a Practical Pioneer Jesus laid down His life on the cross for us without hesitation. No plan B. No second thoughts. Just as Christ sacrificed Himself for us, we should Reach Out and sacrifice ourselves for others. How can you lay your life down today? Start. Start now. Start where you are. Start with what you have.” This is why I became interested in being on Rashawn’s launch team. He spoke the words we all need to hear. It’s not about the past. It’s about our future. And there is no better time to start your relationship with God, than right now.
The chapters are laid out with Rashawn sharing his story (which many can relate too), then ends with thoughts to pause on, then a prayer, and ends with giving you something to move forward.

Start where you are, really!

Rashawn and God says, you are a glorious work in progress, a beloved child in whom God delights, a person on the brink of revival. Rashawn shares his own story of spiritual drifting, and shows you how to start your walk with God now, even in the midst of addiction, doubt, depression, fear, or years spent running from God. He shows you how to

· find God's love and acceptance
· move out of your mess
· see life through God's eyes
· be a loving person in a hateful world
· never settle for less than God's best
· and more

The change you long to see in the world starts in your own heart. Thankfully, that's exactly where God is waiting for you.

This is a book that has a timeless message for all to hear. Most times we think we are beyond help, and with the help of Rashawn’s story, we can see what we are not. No matter where we are God is right there with us!

Pick up this book and start. Rashawn says, “Start. Start now. Start where you are. Start with what you have. Start with what you don’t have. Start with your fears and your frustrations. Start with what you don’t know and what you do know. Start moving away from your doubts and toward God. Start with your mess-ups and knockdowns. Start small and weak. Start now. Just start. Start where you are, and God will take you where you need to be.”

This is a good read for anyone who is stuck in life at any phase, be it depression, guilt, anger, jealousy, anxiety etc. The title of the book says 'START WHERE YOU ARE' which is a doorway to reaching out to god who resides in our own hearts.
We must know how to reach within ourselves. We can do that easily if we choose

- Peace > Comparison
- Trusting > Knowing
- Forgiveness > Fighting
- Devotion > Emotion
- Holiness > Happiness
- Reflection > Reaction
- Submission > Selfishness
- Mission > Me, Myself

Chapter by chapter this book talks about following topics:

- From dirty to worthy
- Start where you are
- Peace
- Conviction
- Faithfulness
- Patience
- Self control
- Joy
- Kindness
- Goodness
- Love
- Start where you are and not looking back

At the end of every chapter there is guide to next steps, which includes section that makes you 'pause and ponder' and then 'pressing into prayer' to reflect more on the topics.
This book is a self-help book that asks one to 'Just start'.
Start where you are, and God will take you where you need to be.

A Powerful and Relatable Faith Journey

Rashawn Copeland is a gifted storyteller who masterfully uses down-to-earth, practical stories to engage readers in a thought-provoking and accessible way. His writing meets individuals wherever they are in their faith journey, making the messages easy to understand and apply to everyday life.

The central theme of the book—how God meets you in your mess, loves you through it, and leads you out of it—is both inspiring and deeply impactful. As I read, I found myself continually reflecting on how I could take action on the ideas presented, making this book more than just a read—it’s a resource for real spiritual growth.

This book has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on me, and I’m excited to explore more of Copeland’s work in the future. Highly recommended for those seeking encouragement and a deeper connection with their faith.

Rashawn’s book was such an encouragement to dive into your relationship with Jesus. It was a reminder that no matter how lost, angry, or hurt we are, Jesus is waiting for us to come back home to him. One of the stories in his book gave the best kind of chills - a great reminder that miracles are still happening in our world around us and we are never too far gone to go to God. There’s so much motivation in this! It was such a great way to start my morning or end my day. I highly recommend this book and any others by this author. I also recommend following him on Twitter as he gives such great encouragement and reminders throughout the day.

Pastor Rashawn has a way of translating complex biblical verses into practical stories readers wherever they are in their faith journey can easily understand, retain, and cultivate. Start Where You Are has truly helped me learn more and grow in my own walk with God. Pastor Rashawn’s vulnerability in sharing personal stories is commendable, and I have a feeling that those stories will undoubtedly continue to change lives for years to come.

I just received "Start Where You Are" and I am absolutely excited to get to reading. I read a few pages of it already, and I am ready to continue reading to the end. God works in mysterious ways, and I was expecting the book and at my lowest I got it in the mail, and it switched my emotions from stressed and sad to excitement.

DNF. Can't fairly star rate since I didn't get far enough. Had to give up because I felt this book was very much for either unbelievers or for people very new to the faith, therefore a lot of this stuff was pretty much ingrained already. Wasn't what I thought it was but I'm sure it could help people who don't know Jesus or are new to faith.

Excellent read! Rashawn does a great job of laying this book out. Meet God now, right here, right now. God doesn't need you to find him; he's found you already and has never not been right there with you. This is a simple breakdown of a deeply troubled issue for many. I appreciated Rashawn's transparency and honesty; sharing his own story and how he himself has traveled with God meeting Him and going just from the place you are. Rashawn's journey is a common one but opening up is not; we all have our struggles, problems, and issues and some might just seem more difficult but no matter what God is HERE. I received an advanced copy of this ebook from Netgalley and the publisher and these are my own opinions. A simple message, needed by many. There isn't a BIG giant discovery that we need to come upon; we just need to accept God and start our own journey today.
