Lost on the Way: A Journal From the Camino de Santiago

Rate this book
Published in 2020, this is one of the most intimate, touching, and humorous travelogues you'll ever read.

Of the many Camino books out there, Lost on the Way: A Journal From the Camino de Santiago is perhaps the only one that reads like an autobiographical travel memoir, a Spain travel guide for hiking in Spain, AND a Camino de Santiago Guidebook for the Camino del Norte, Camino Frances, and the Camino Primitivo.

From the Back Cover:
When Blake Farha was unexpectedly laid off, he knew the time had finally come to walk the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage stretching all the way across Spain. Armed with a cheap notebook, a ballpoint pen, and the ugliest pair of shoes he’d ever owned, he set out to fulfill a dream, and to get a grip on the demons that have plagued him his entire life.

In this uncensored travel journal, Blake chronicles his 600 mile sojourn on foot through the Spanish countryside, and invites readers deep into the inner workings of his heart and mind.

Day by day, mile after mile, the Camino, the pilgrims he meets, and the time for reflection bestow upon him countless insights on depression, anxiety, self-worth, and finding peace.

Vulnerable and humorous, evocative and earnest, his journal is a window into a lost soul on a journey to self-discovery; a portrait of gorgeous landscapes, human connections, and those questions which don’t seem to have any answers.

Like the thousands of tiny yellow arrows that mark the way to Santiago, these heartfelt entries remind us that hope often hides in unexpected places, and stand as a testament to all who read them that there’s nothing wrong with getting lost on the way.

Whether you're interested in the Camino de Santiago, traveling in Spain, or walking almost 600 miles in the shoes of a lost soul looking for answers, scroll up and purchase this powerful tale of introspection and wanderlust to join Blake in getting Lost on the Way!

Blake Farha is an artist, musician, and performer. Born in Wichita, Kansas in 1986, he grew up in Dallas, Texas, where he graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Fluent in four-and-a-half languages (his Danish has gotten a bit rusty), Blake has spent his adult life hopping from country to country and jumping from career to career.

He currently lives in Berlin, Germany, where he has given up chasing that silly life he was led to believe was the right way to live (you know, the one where you get a "real" job, make money, and move up the ol' corporate ladder) and devoted himself to his creative pursuits including: writing and producing music, voice acting, improv comedy, and podcasting.

Catch him on his weekly podcast (on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your podcasts), "See You In Sleep County," where he reads original bedtime stories for adults to help people relax, rest easy, and be carried off into a night of sweet slumber.

If you're in need of a laugh, you can tune in to his other podcast, "Improvise Till You Make It," a podcast all about the Improv Mindset, where he speaks with other improvisors and artists about how they use improv principles both on-and-off-stage to live brighter, fuller lives. Warning: this podcast contains hilarious improv scenes made up on the spot!

As a singer/songwriter, Blake has produced, recorded, and released seven solo albums, all of which can be streamed and downloaded for free at blakefarha.bandcamp.com.

If you'd like to keep up with all of Blake's creative endeavors, you can follow him on Instagram at @blakefarha. If you want to make his day, send him a little message to say hello!

Lost on the Way: A Journal From the Camino de Santiago is his first novel.

Disclaimer: I know Blake

This book is really, really good. It is an honest account of the inner workings of Blake’s mind during a period of life transition, hardship, and reflection. The chapters do a fantastic job at making you feel (or as close to that as possible) all of the emotional rollercoaster the author had experienced during his journey, without ever making it seem fake or exaggerated. I am sure everyone will laugh, tear up and reflect on their own life as they enjoy this wonderful book. I don’t usually re-read books, but I would love to revisit this book on a regular basis.

So I'm about halfway through this one, but, I think I'll call it quits. This isn't a bad book by any means. However, I think the title is misleading... as it's more of a (general) journal or a self-help book, really. There are very few details or descriptions of the actual Camino. The author's thoughts, companionship, past experiences, his heartache and joy: these are more the subject matter.

Honest and inspiring

An honest account of a quest for peace, acceptance, and better mental health on the camino de Santiago. Brave publication of a very well written journal that is heartbreaking, inspiring and entertaining all in one. Wonderful lessons to be learnt in this book.

As an avid journaler myself, I can fully appreciate what a vulnerable thing it must be to share your journal with the world, especially without any form of abridgement or censorship. I can only say that this book had me in awe of the raw human honesty within its pages. There is never a hint of contrivance or self-consciousness. It is purely the truth of Blake Farha's internal and external journey. What a privilege it was to delve into the mind and heart of a fellow human, to walk the Camino alongside him, and to be inspired to do the same.

Lost on the Way is an ironic title for this book because it truly loses its way in every possible sense. Far from capturing the profound beauty and transformative spirit of the Camino, the author delivers a self-indulgent mess that feels more like a vanity project than a heartfelt journey. The narrative is riddled with spelling errors and glaring inconsistencies, making it clear that editing was an afterthought—or nonexistent. The writing itself is pretentious and shallow, utterly failing to convey the essence of the Camino experience. This book is not worth the walk.

Blake's journey on the Camino is so beautifully transcribed in these pages. His ups, downs, and thoughts so closely reflect my own in day to day life- many pearls of wisdom he shares I'll carry with me for a while. This book feels so personal, brave, and brilliantly descriptive of the inner workings of depression and perfectionism. I'd recommend this to any living soul!

A diary of a young man’s mental and physical journey on the way of St James. The author does an amazing job describing his pilgrimage through journal entries.
