Masquerade with a difference!

Aha! A Lyons Den connection. That excited me! Lord Lucifer is Titan, the head of security at the Den. Beyond that he's a damaged war hero who finally returned to England a couple of years after Waterloo and has stayed removed from his family, allowing them to think he's dead. His brother Nathan takes up the reigns of the earldom.
Diana was his sweetheart in his younger years, indeed his reason for fleeing England. But now she needs his help and its Diana's brother who calls him to her assistance.
So we have a second chance romance, a woman forced into an arranged marriage, dreadful family interactions, and poisonous step children. Throw in a masquerade and murder and there's a gratifying array of plot enhancers. I really liked Lucas and Diana as individuals. Unfortunately I just didn't feel the burn, although many did.

This one bugged me from the very beginning. Chapter 1 has the verbiage --Seventeen years ago-- and then for the rest of the story it was actually TWELVE years ago. So, for me that started the story off on the wrong foot. I found the heroine whiny and sort of mean. The hero stared out sort of wimpy. (Example: Watching her get married to the old dude even though he had madly gambled throughout the night until he had the amount of money the heroine demanded he obtained in order for her to elope with him.) This one from the very beginning was just not my cup of tea. I do wonder if the story had started out by saying Twelve years ago... if that would have made the story a smidgeon better to me because every time it was mentioned something that happened twelve years ago I was thrown out of the story and reminded that the beginning said it was seventeen years ago.

A well written fast paced book that was different as whilst it was a second chance romance, Diana was still married for much of the book but she didn't cheat. I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of suspense mystery & romance. The characters had depth & I really liked both Lucas & Diana. I also liked that this was a spin off from the Lyons Den series. An engrossing read that I read in a couple of sittings & I look forward to the rest of the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Overall: ⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋
Romance: 💞
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡️
Sensuality: 🔥🔥🔥
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑
Number of Sex Scenes: 2.5 rounded to 🍆🍆🍆

Safety warnings attached at end.

Our story begins 12 years in the past. Diana is trapped in an engagement to another 3 times her age, when her heart is really interested with Lucas. Yet challenges abound, and they are separated for over a decade.

The book picks up and Lucas is back from war. Diana has matured, but is faced with danger. Diana’s brother asks Lucas to help keep Diana safe.

Give this book a try if you are in the mood for:
- Lots and lots and LOTS of action, intrigue, suspense, and danger
- Lower to medium steam – Theres a few open door intimate scenes and 1 full sex scene but they aren’t extensive
- An experienced heroine – she was married for 12 years to someone else
- A former soldier – Lucas went to war and fought in Waterloo
- A masquerade! Though it’s a short part in the story
- The prodigal hero that returns
- Second chance romance trope

So I’m not going to talk in detail too much about this book because I think it would get spoiler heavy. There is so much going on. So so soooooo much. And that is why it gets such a low rating from me. That is just not my thing. I found the romance lacking quite a bit, especially since the heroine is still married through half the book. (No cheating elements come in to play though, no kisses, etc). There’s a lot of danger, and drama. Every corner we turned there was something else happening, another danger, another dramatic confrontation. There are numerous plot devices going on in this book and the romance was just lost for me, sadly.

This was my first Jade Lee. I will give her another try down the road and see if I feel similarly.

So pleased when I started reading this to see so many links to the Lyon’s Den series. Especially Titan /Lucifer being the main character.

This book is about him and the love of his life.
It’s a story of his escape from England and his Future Earldom and responsibilities, and the woman he loves who was forced to marry another, to go to war,His injuries, and return to protect his loved one.

It’s fast paced, adventurous, intriguing and enjoyable.
One you’ll hate to put down even for a minute.

Great writing and characters. Look forward to more in the series.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Jade Lee has long been an author I’ve wanted to try, given it’s always interesting to find people with a similar ethnic background to mine writing historical romance, since there are only a handful of them. And while I didn’t fully know what to expect going in, I found this to be a fairly good intro to Lee’s work.

I liked the way she built some of the darker suspenseful tension. Lee creates a real sense of the danger her characters are in, while having them navigate it in a realistic and sympathetic way.

I really liked Diana, especially as she really demonstrates how she’s changed through the course of her marriage and is now facing a perilous situation.

And while Lucas appealed to me a bit less, particularly at first with his emotional scars, he did grow on me with the care he shows toward his men and ensuring they adjust to society again, as well as the love he still holds for Diana and what he does to protect her.

This is a well-paced historical romantic suspense from an author I hope to read more from very soon. And if you love historical romance, especially with suspense as a major component, you’ll enjoy this one.

Suspenseful and fast-paced, this Regency romance draws the reader in from the opening chapter and keeps one enthralled throughout. The plot is well written, with more than one mystery to be unraveled. When Lucas discovers that the only woman he has ever loved is in danger, he does not hesitate to take up the mantle of protector, especially as he failed her dismally some years before. Lucas wears the scars from the Battle of Waterloo, but the emotional scars he carries are even more crippling. When the truth about his past comes out, he surprised by Diana's stand on his behalf. Unfortunately, it does not change her way of thinking. Given in marriage to a man old enough to be her grandfather, Diana refuses to give up the freedom she has earned upon the death of her husband, and one can only side with Diana as she holds onto the few rights that she has as a widow. The plot is a spin-off from the Lyon's Den series, given Lucas' association with the Black Widow. It is, however, a standalone and comes to a successful and happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

What is in a name

Lucas aka Lucifer has hidden from his family because his mother does not like flawed things! I was drawn to this story because I love the Lyons Den series! This was absolutely amazing story! Lucifer worked as somewhat of a bouncer at the Lyons den until he didn't! He Left knowing he couldn't prevent the woman he loved from marrying and older man! This man is poisoned and Diana is suspected! Diana is not the submissive woman that Lucas left but she is not ready to deal with the level of treachery in her home! Lucas steps into his title to try to get the truth and protect the woman he never stop loving! Diana has her freedom and doesn't want to relinquish her freedom!!?? Can they ever come together?? Read on...

fabulous and entertaining

This is a very original story full of twists and turns you don’t expect. It was marvelous watching a sheltered butterfly become a hardened woman to once again transform into a beautiful creature of her own. Lucas’s journey is a hard one to watch, but in the long run, he learns as well and changes for the better. A shock from his mother, a bitter woman and love that truly changes them all. Lovely story!

A very well written historical romance. There's lots of drama and a slow burn second chance romance and I really enjoyed it. The historical details were well done and the characters of the H/h were nicely drawn. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc in exchange for my honest opinion. NB - I have also purchased a copy of this book from Amazon.

I wanted this hero to be more ruthless. I kept thinking of how an Anne Stuart hero would behave in this story. He would have dropped that turkey and kidnapped his love interest.
But this hero is ~honourable~ instead.
I really loved this heroine though. After all she had been through she had backbone and fought for what she wanted.
I would read more by this author in the future.

I give this book a 4.5. I've read a couple of romance novels from this author and have always found them well written and entertaining. I feel the same about this book.
Lucas, or Lord Lucifer, and Diana had been in love as teenagers when a cruel fate forced Diana to have to marry Oscar, a man three times her age. After Lucas spend the entire night before her wedding trying to gather as much money as he could to save her from this forced marraige, he fails. Because of the measures he took to raise the money, and his loss of his love, he joins the military to flee his new enemies and his hurt.
Fast forward 12 years and Lucas is back in London and fighting, and getting maimed, in battle. He's drawn back into Diana's life to protect her from the stepson that's always hated her who now resents her from cutting him off financially.
I haven't read historical romance novels from a lot of different authors but of those that I have read, Jade Lee is by far the better writer. I've read all of the now popular Bridgerton novels and the amount of misogyny in those books was very off putting. Ms. Lee proves that a historical romance novel could be entertaining and stay true to the era.
The story itself was also quite compelling outside of the romantic aspect. The characters were well developed and the plot moved very fluidly without being predictable. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Historical romance with a lil bit of mystery/suspense thrown in for flavouring - the exact kind of perfectly inoffensive fluff which I can finish in two sittings. For being part of what I gather is an extended universe, the book stands alone perfectly well. If I was being nitpicky, some of the period language didn't entirely convince, and the third-act romantic drama was only resolved by one party giving way to the other, which isn't really the mutual compromise and growth I was hoping for. To be fair, though, and without giving away too many details, it was a tricky problem to resolve without growing eyebrow-raisingly daring for the setting, so I can't be overly displeased by it. There was also a lot of potentially meaty interpersonal drama that I felt could have been plumbed better; there's one specific scene which really struck me where a conversation is described as follows: "His mother would say something that sounded innocuous but still made Lucas bristle. Diana was there to diffuse his anger, softening his mother's words and making him wonder if perhaps he overreacted. His mother certainly did, stiffening at the strangest things, only to have Diana rephrase his words into something more palatable." This is the kind of stuff I love to read in full detail, with agonising focus on all the missed connections. I know that kind of narrative doesn't typically lend itself to a light genre romp; I do understand why it was glossed over, but it felt like a missed opportunity. All that said, this was short, sweet, and satisfying, and I enjoyed reading it. Thank you to NetGalley & Dragonblade Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Jade Lee's Lord Lucifer has all of the elements of a great Regency romance: steamy love scenes, societal drama, and lots of YEARNING!

However, despite all of this, I had a hard time buying into this couple. The book states from the beginning that they don't really know each other and yet, we are supposed to believe that they have held onto this love for twelve years. I would have preferred for this book to be like fifty pages longer so the relationship could have been more fully developed from the beginning. It would have made the fact that both of these people have put the other on a pedestal a little easier to digest.

This book definitely delivers on the tropes of Regency romance, but I don't think it really did anything new with the genre. I tend to prefer my historical romance to be a little more well-rounded so this wasn't my favorite. However, I still think that many people will really enjoy this book and Iwish them happy reading!

Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review!

Review excerpted from my blog post over at Titillated Termagant Romance Reviews (https://titillatedtermagant.wordpress...)

My Rating: 3 stars

Library recommendation: Recommended for public library Romance collections.

Warning: Hereafter, you chance spoilers. I will try never to reveal major plot points, but to review any book, you must reveal some parts of the story.

_____________

Number of titles I have read by this author: 1

Love story speed: Instalurve, at least for the H

Relationship dynamics: The Scarred Veteran (H) / The Young Widow (h)

Physical Descriptions: Diana is described as being “pixie” like, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Lucas is described as having dark hair and eyes, with a scar on the right side of his head above his ear, and a disfigured hand.

Sexual content: Some; on-page and explicit

Triggers: Descriptions of post-traumatic shock; graphic murder; parental estrangement

Grammar/Editing: My ARC had some typos, comma splices, and word choice issues.

Review: The inaugural book in the Lords of the Masquerade series, this story is chiefly set in London and Ireland. Some inconsistencies (and a date typo in the prologue) make the temporal setting harder to pinpoint. I believe that it is set in 1818, if the Irish famine referenced as ongoing in Ireland is in relation to the Year Without a Summer, rather than the Potato Famine of the 1840s.

The main characters of this novel are Diana and Lucas. These two have a past that didn’t work out and this is essentially their second chance narrative. What didn’t work for me is that her first husband is alive for almost half of the book. The book’s summary, in my opinion, didn’t make this information clear enough. While Diana and Lucas don’t have a lot of inappropriate interactions when Oscar is alive, that he is present in the narrative for that long before his death makes this into a different book than I was expecting, and I suspect this detail won’t be seen as minor by some readers. Setting aside that awkwardness, however, once Diana and Lucas aren’t held back by the restrictions of fidelity, their relationship develops fairly typically for a murder mystery: he is there to protect her, she wants her freedom, and tension abounds. I will say that I think Diana’s objections to their being together are a little overstated – she holds to her opinions steadfastly until, for very little reason, she changes her mind and everything works out. Given the proportion of the book that she pushed for her complete freedom, it seems at odds with her character to suddenly change her mind. In terms of supporting characters, I liked the level of detail given to characters such as Diana and Lucas’ mothers, as well as to Oscar. While none of these are particularly likeable characters, this is at least done on purpose, and done well.

It is interesting to note that there are also characters that clearly feature in another series by Lee. This book can be read on its own, but it’s fairly obvious that some character and setting details are lacking if you aren’t a dedicated reader of the author’s other series.

Full disclosure: I received a free advance review copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lord Lucifer by Jade Lee is a thriller/romance about a young couple who were in love when they were teenagers: Lucas and Diana. Lucas would inherit, but not now. Diana's father had died and her mother had arranged a marriage for Diana to a man three times her age. He vowed to win 3,000 pounds so he could marry her before her wedding the next day. He won the money but at great cost, so instead of hurting her he bought himself a commission and fought at Waterloo. Now, 12 years later, her brother comes to him, asking that he help Diana. She is in trouble. Lucas has been hiding at the Lyon's Den as the notorious boss, Titan. Even his family believes him dead. Diana's much older husband is now dying and she is his caretaker. She has wrested power from him, in their own little world, including withholding funds from his son, Gregory, hoping it would force it to mature. So far it hadn't worked. She goes nowhere, does nothing, living her dreary life, day by day. One night she chances to go with her sisters to a masquerade ball where she is set upon by men with murder on their minds. Lucas rushes her home, Gregory is there making subtle threats, and Lucas holds her tightly; they hear an odd noise coming from her husband's bedchamber. He is in the throes of death. He appears to have been poisoned.

Lord Lucifer is a gripping tale of deceit, greed, and revenge. Lucifer/Lucas is damaged in many ways: physically from the war, but more importantly from growing up with a mother who appears to hate him. He had been declared dead in all ways but legally with his brother assuming his responsibilities. His childhood never left him. Diana was intelligent, clever, and ambitious. She had been given lemons and made of them lemonade. Over the years she had gained control over her household, grown to have some affection for her husband, and left her past where it belonged, forgetting the handsome boy she had known. When the dark Lord Lucifer appeared at the behest of her brother, it was difficult to recognize they boy she had known. She did not take him seriously, believing Gregory's threats to be nothing more than words. The plot was different and clever. Plenty of books touch on the killing for the patriarch in order to hasten one's inheritance, but this one focused on it. Another major theme was the total loss of oneself when a woman married. In this era she became less than nothing, depending on her husband for her very existence. A difficult concept to understand in this day and age. Very nicely done. Congratulations Ms. Lee

Lord Lucifer is the first book in a new Regency romance trilogy by Jade Lee, Lords of the Masquerade, and I received a review copy from the NetGalley.

Regency romances tend to repeat a certain formula of an innocent maiden paired with a more experienced man. The pair then waltzes through the society season from balls to opera performances that offer private moments for them to fall in love and have hot sex in a side. Some authors are better at making it feel fresh; some less so.

Jade Lee has taken a different approach in her romance. Diana has been married off at sixteen to a much older man to save family finances. Lucas had offered to save her, but his attempts to raise money with gambling had landed him in such hot waters that he had seen it best to enlist and leave the country. Twelve years later they meet again. A fairly average approach so far. But there’s a twist: Diana’s ailing husband is still alive. She’s not a merry widow with whom the hero connects for a second chance. And she’s not a damsel in distress, no matter what Lucas tries to tell her—though there is a villain out to get her.

Most of the book takes place in a sick room and in private parlours instead of balls and other glittering events. Diana is a dutiful wife who has carved a life for herself in her husband’s hostile household. Her husband needs to die, of course, for the young couple to have their happily ever after, and much is made of his death and the causes of it. Lucas is a soldier who sets his duty before anything, and so probably for the first time in a romance history, the hero refuses sex with the heroine unless she agrees to marry him. It works too.

For all that this is a romance, it’s a fairly gloomy book. There’s sickness and death. There’s a murderous villain making everyone’s life worse. There’s a lot of resentment between children and parents. All sorts of issues that have to be dealt with, and while they add depth to the characters, they dominate over the romance. There are a couple of fairly bland sex scenes that fail to engage my emotions, and although I liked Diana and Lucas both, I wasn’t terribly invested in their HEA. She could’ve retained her hard-earned independence for all I cared and kept him in a side. But she caves in the end.

The other two gentlemen of the trilogy are introduced in this book too. A lot is made of it—and then they are completely forgotten for the rest of the book. So, as a lure for the reader to continue with these characters, it comes somewhat short. But if I come across them, I may give them a look.

I loved the h in the beginning, but my feelings for her changed at about the 2/3rds mark. The H has loved her for 12+ years and when he finally meets up with her again, you think she feels the same. But, not true, she wants her fun/freedom now that a widow. She wants the H in her bed but not as husband/wife. I felt sorry for the H, nothing has gone easy for him.

You know from almost the start who the villain is, but it wasn't easy trying to bring him to justice. The story was suspenseful and had many twists I was surprised.

I enjoyed the aspect of the Lyons-Den being part of this story, if only more in the background. If you haven't read this series, by different author's I would encourage you. It is one of my favorite series and Ms. Lee is part of it too.

Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level 4 out of 5.

We are treated to an epilogue 7 months in the future. But, what that future held for our H and his brother we are left in the dark. I will be watching out for the next two books in the series. I enjoy this author and her writing style.

No cheating, HEA and spice. I can't improve on the blurb, just recommending this enjoyable story. (ljb)

A second chance at love is the romantic Lord Lucifer by Jade Lee. I fell in love with Diana and Lucas and rooted for them to find their happily ever after.

Twelve years ago, Diana and Lucas were in love. She was being forced to marry an old man and he was trying to convince her to run away with him. She agreed if he could win the money for her family's debts. He did, but realized that he wouldn't be able to keep them in funds and he needed to find a real way to make money. She married an old man and he became a soldier.

Fast forward and Diana is married but is in trouble. Her stepson is threatening her and her elderly husband's safety. Lucas finally is able to help her after he left her all those years ago. He sets out to protect her, even against her wishes, and when her stepson launches a deadly plot, Lucas is the only one who can save her. And he wants to be the only man she turns to for the rest of her life.

Such a sweet story. This is a slow burn romance. There are some sensual scenes. Both Diana and Lucas have been hurt by circumstances in their lives. It was very sweet to read their story and how Lucas fought for Diana's love and trust. Good read.

This was the first book by Jade Lee I’ve read and I thought it was well-written. Fast paced, and with a sense of urgency that lasts through the book, “Lord Lucifer” does a good job of giving us characters that break out of their prescribed molds in Society to become stronger individuals. Diana was forced to marry an older man for the sake of her family, giving up hopes of marrying the man she loved, but grew into her position and instead of becoming bitter, she became the strong woman who was perfect for Lucas when he came back from the wars. Lucas has an annoying tendency to keep Diana on a pedestal, but eventually her strength shows him that they can be equals. Both have interesting journeys towards discovering who they are and what they want from life, and i thought Lee did a good job showing them make those journeys in a believable way.

As a love struck teen-ager Lucifer disappointed himself by failing to protect the girl he loves from marriage to an old man.  Going off to war and being declared dead doesn't seem to have improved matters.

Diana has made a decent life out of her marriage,  after some struggles.  She rules her household with determination and kindness.  Unfortunately her stepson is becoming more and more dangerous, and not just to her.

A very exciting historical romance with lots of danger and emotional characters.  Our hero has been hiding from his old life.  Our heroine needs to live life to the full. There is a certain gambling hell from another series that is mentioned in this book , but this is the start of a totally different series.  I will definitely be looking forward to the next books.

Great fun.

Not bad. I thought the writing was unique for an HR, and maybe a little better than normal. It felt different at least.

The characters are a little refreshing. Lucas has more depth and character than most male leads. His backstory and family dynamics are interesting, as are his motivations and POV.

Diana is pretty good as well. I like how she gained the respect of everyone she knows (unless they’re dicks). But she’s really incredibly naïve. Even after she’s attacked and nearly stabbed in the park, she refuses to believe Geoffrey wants her dead. Really?? So that aspect was a bit frustrating.

Plot gets wrapped up too quickly and too neatly at the end. I was really on board with them not getting married and was disappointed when she caved. Why does every HEA have to include marriage? Because it’s romance, I guess.

This story dealt with a scarred war hero Lucas, who returns home and allows his family to believe he died. He is scarred and his mother always hated imperfect things and was sure to let him know this. So he stayed away. He joined the war because the woman he loved, Diana was to marry a man 3 times her age and as teens, he could not support her as she was accustomed. Suddenly, he is asked to protect her from some frightening things happening within her home. Diana was in danger from her husbands’ children. So, he sets out, any way he can, to protect her from the evil around her. Someone kills her husband and she is blamed. Lucas knows the real culprit and needs to draw him out with the help of his friends. He also needs to reconcile with his evil mother and his family. There were a lot of twists and turns but I do think the story could have been wrapped up sooner rather than later. It was well written and enjoyable though.

Once upon a time there was a prince who climbed up to her window, only to find she was to marry an older man the next day so she could support her family. Wait, yes it started a little like that but that prince, young as he was soon realized he would never be able to earn the money needed to have her as his. So he bought a commission and entered the military.

Now twelve years later, Lucas returned, only to find that his Diana needed help. She had married the elderly suitor and his son was being vicious trying to wring money out her and she was in danger. Lucas had failed her before but he would not now..

Then everything goes haywire and the journey begins and it is not an easy one. A tale of murder, greed, lies and so much more. A wounded hero, a heroine who has survived. They both need and deserve love, if only they can find it together and survive! Excellent!

After her father dies twelve years ago Lady Diana waited for the young man she loved to save her, but it was not to be and she end up married a man three times her age. Future Earl of Wolvesmead, Lucas Crosse failed to protect the love of his life and sadly went off to war. Now Lady Diana Dunsmore she helps her invalid husband and she controls her step-son’s allowance and he’s furious and dangerous. At the request of her brother Lucas invades Diana’s life and her home to protect her at all costs. I love this story of a second chance at love and romance, her husband is murdered and the constable is afraid she murdered her husband. They set out to find witnesses to the murder as this romance story unfolds. I have voluntarily read and reviewed these excellent story.
