Why on earth would you read in German?

Even Mark Twain said, “When a German dives into a sentence, you won’t see him again until he emerges at the other end with the verb between his teeth.” So, isn’t reading German just frustrating and tiring, making you want to rip the pages out of the book?! Well, it doesn’t have to be. This is where books like the Einfach Deutsch lesen series come in, which prove that reading can boost your language knowledge and be enjoyable at the same time.

What is our motto?

Plot and characters always come first. Offering stories the room they need to evolve is paramount to creating depth and to breathing life into the characters.

Vocabulary and grammar are then adapted to the level indicated on the book cover. These levels are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Familiar vocabulary is reinforced and new words are gradually introduced in context, without causing the reader frustration.

What can you await from the Einfach Deutsch lesen series?

You can

engaging stories with twists and turns that will keep your attention until the very last page

three-dimensional characters you can laugh and cry with (mostly laugh with, though)

realistic and authentic dialogues

reinforcement of vocabulary through subtle repetition, while allowing you to pick up new words as you go along, in stories that are written entirely in German

German-English translation of new and important words at the end of each chapter or, in the more recent books, at the bottom of the page

free downloadable vocabulary, comprehension and grammar exercises (with solutions), which can also be used as teaching material in classrooms

lots of giggles and heaps of fun – most importantly!

Very easy German, yet the story is not boring at all. I used it as a warm up after few months of not practicing my German.. and got me hooked again.
Can't recommend Angelika Bohn's books to beginners enough..

Wonderful!

Sehr gut! I don’t know whether to praise the author more for the easy way she introduces - and in a natural way repeats and reinforces - new German words and phrases, or for writing what is simply a fabulously entertaining and frequently laugh-out-loud book with a very funny twist at the end. I hope she writes many more.

If you’re looking for a beginner DaF book this one gets two thumbs up.

It’s well written at a beginner level, and manages to be laugh out loud funny at points. Laugh out loud funny in a beginner reader language book. Yep. You read that right. Das ist ein sehr gut Buch.

This is not my first Angelika Bohn book, as I read Der Silberne Kugelschreiber a couple of years ago as well, so I was excited to dive into her work a bit more. I read this via audiobook to practice my listening comprehension in German and loved it. Finn Muller (sorry I don't have a German keyboard and can't type the umlaut) ordered a ring for his girlfriend to celebrate their one year anniversary, but since he's in the shower when it's delivered, it ends up going to the mysterious Neighbor # 5 (direct translation of Nachbar Nr. 5 - the title) and we watch Finn as he goes to all of his neighbors doors to ask if they received the package, only to end up getting pulled into their worlds for a bit. The frustration you experience for Finn reading this book is palpable, and the climax was not what I expected, but very funny. It's a bit unbelievable at times, and I wouldn't say this is a masterpiece, but it truly goes above and beyond what is expected of a "German learner series." Angelika Bohn is a true author, who uses her talents to help others learn not only of great story telling, but language learning as well. If you are learning German I highly suggest this, and if possible make it the first book you read, especially if you are a beginner and want to consume all of her work, as it is at the easiest level. It is fantastic for listening comprehension, I found it very easy to follow, the narrator was very clear and methodical in their reading, with great emotional impact and comedic timing!

Crazy Neighbors
More than your normal graded reader, this easy A1 level reader provides a more interesting story plot than usual. The characters are of all ages, rather than just students/ young adults. Because of the way the main character meets a new pair of neighbors in each apartment, the life situations change in each chapter. Each chapter is longer than the usual bite size chapters of Graded readers. This creates a veritable smorgasbord of things to experience in your target language.

Even though there is much variety here in this one book, key vocabulary is reinforced throughout, but in the normal everyday way we use language. This creates not only interesting phrases the German speaker will want to use in the real world, but it makes for some very funny situations. And, I loved the ending!

I recommend this series for anyone learning German, and I think it will appeal to adults of all ages. I've read the whole thing through three times, and will probably read it a few more times.

Also versuch es!

Loved this book. Even with my marginal German, i found reading fast to find out what would happen next. Clever plot. Great characters. A lot of fun. Good to find a basic German reader that is a lot of fun.

Geschichte sehr gut.

It is so much better then other total-beginner German texts I have found. Firstly it is not aimed at children. Children can read it for sure, but the main audience are young adults/adults. Secondly the story is not dumb as in most of these types of texts. I understand that is is hard to create a text in simple German which is not horribly dull, but this author mostly succeeded. The story is absurd, for sure, but it also funny in places.

The biggest benefit for me is that the author established some vocabulary and used it throughout the story without raising the level. In the beginning I struggled a lot and towards the end I read almost smoothly. There were some clever sentence constructions (at least it did not sound like what a German speaker would say) that expressed more sophisticated ideas, but still reinforced the same basic vocabulary.

I will definitely buy more of these stories.

I fully expected reading this to be a bit of a chore -- something necessary to improve my German before I'm ready for Goethe. Instead, this was quite entertaining. I look forward to reading more books by Bohn.

I really appreciate the author's way of incorporating and reinforcing words and phrases that are likely to be new to the reader. An entertaining story as well, with a great twist at the very end!

A nice easy read for practicing German. The writer keeps the language simple but she doesn't compromise on the plot.

Dieses Buch ist für Anfänger der deutschen Sprache geeignet, aber nicht A1. Ich denke, es ist für jemanden zwischen A2 und B1.
Die Geschichte ähnelt einer Sitcom, sehr lustig und schnell.
