Love can make us do any number of things. It can make us accept a gift, or push one away. It can make us give to others or take away from them. It can make us stand up to power, or stand helpless in the face of it. In Blood Ties, we explore the way love weaves it's magic around us... and how that magic brings both light, and darkness. Blood Ties introduces us to a songbird with a special accessory, and a special gift; Scarlett, a wife whose longing for her husband keeps her writing letters every day; Terrell, a mother who wants a baby and gets her wish, with unexpected consequences; and Rane, a young woman with extraordinary power, and a foolish heart. These stories and more spin love and magic into a delicious fantasy of darkness and light.
This book of short stories about Black Love and magic is amazing. The author had me captured from page one, sentence one. The first story, Blood Ties made me cry because it was beautiful for so many different reasons. After the first story, I knew I was going to finish this book in one sitting. Every story stands on it own and could easily be it’s own full length book ( and I definitely slid in the authors dms and told her that). This book has passionate Black Love, Cautionary Tales, Speculative Romance, Black Sapphic Love, some fantasy,—EVERYTHING is between these pages and I highly recommend reading this book.
This was my first time reading this author and it definitely wont be my last. A quick, magically frustrating, and fascinating read (lol). Shameka is a masterful queen of edging with this collection of shorts. The subject matter in each tale is different from anything I've ever read, but be forewarned, the author takes us through it, okay.
