By any measure, she is a success. By any measure that is, except her own. Ivy Livingstone has entrée into Washington DC’s political elite, lives in an exclusive neighborhood and sends her son to a sought-after private school. But her beautiful life is a gilded cage. She is independent, but alone. And unfortunately, very few men are confident enough to believe they are in Ivy’s league. Eli Thomason has all the confidence in the world, except when it comes to his own judgment about women. And his attraction to Ivy Livingstone proves him right. She is everything he shouldn’t a woman above his station and beyond his means. He overreached once before and still lives with the heartbreaking consequences, so why does he find it so difficult to leave Ivy alone? And if their own baggage isn’t enough, Ivy and Eli have to contend with circumstances around them that seem to confirm their worst that the bond they’re beginning to build can’t possibly last.
What I loved about Ivy's and Eli's story: It was real , I felt it , I felt Eli's stress over how he was going to pay for Zion's school , how much he loved his son, how he watched Ivy and wanted her ,but was nervous that their financial differences would break them up. Even though he was afraid of getting hurt he went for it anyway. Ivy, I loved her she reminded me of me without the money , she did not care what he had, she cared how he would treat her , she wanted Eli , and I felt she saw that Eli was worth her time . They both were a little insecure, which caused the problems in their relationship, but the I cold understand their feelings of insecurity without feeling the need to roll my eyes. This is a story a reader can see happening to them, the discussion about relationships where black women make more than the black man a going on all of the time now , it's a common these days . Nia Forrester does a good job writing Women's fiction that applies to todays reality , that's not overly romanticized, but sexy enough to be romantic , and interesting enough to keep you turning the pages and when you get to the last page wanting more. I say this many times when I read this authors books , this is the beginning of a new relationship , with characters I wish to know better.
I love Nia Forrester's writing. This book is a story about two normal people. Divorced and raising little boys by themselves. They notice each other and proceed to develop a relationship. All pretty normal and not terribly exciting. I feel that was the intention. Just normal people finding their way to loving each other.
I haven’t read a Nia Forrester story I didn’t enjoy. This was a classic love story with two imperfect people. I loved Ivy. She was so relatable. Eli’s behavior at times was a bit aggravating. He almost came off arrogant and immature.
One thing I love about Nia Forrester story is the details.
He had spent many nights here before, and was familiar with every room now, but tonight it felt foreign. Its … niceness was an affront. The high ceilings he admired, the granite countertops in the kitchen and pristine floors throughout were all trumpeting his failure and crying out her success.
A modern complicated love story that Nia fans will enjoy or readers who just want to read a good story with real life situations.

"Ivy's League" by Nina Forrester
My Thoughts....
"Ivy's League" was a beautifully written romantic story about two people...Ivy and Eli. The flow of this story was very well done as we are presented with two people who have two life styles in that were similar in that they were divorced and had son's but that is where it stopped. I loved how this author was able to give the reader a realistic story where you may even know of someone in this situation. Yes, even though both had jobs however, when it came to their diverted lifestyle when it came to money this was a different issue for each of them. How will this professional 'black woman' and this blue collar worker come together and be able to rise above the issue that are before them? I loved how one of the exes seemed to want to play a more uplifting role in his child's life. This author will keep you guessing with a few twist at what was going to happen next definitely keeping your attention till the very end. Be ready for a very thought provoking story filled with lovers, families, exes, friends and some real seamy sexy love scenes.
There were some very interesting intriguing characters that were well portrayed, developed, and believable that really will give the readers a very good relateable read. And with saying that I would recommend this novel "Ivy's League" as a well told love story.
Recently on her blog, the author described this book as "The Book Where Nothing Happens" (click here to see what she means: http://niaforrester.com/2015/09/20/th...). But this book is so much more! This was the book where a real woman meets a real man and they experience real things in a very real, but new relationship.
We have Ivy who has a successful career and is sort of a single mother, she then meets Eli who is a blue collar single father who is struggling financially to give his son all the things in life he never had. From the very beginning Eli was not only skeptical of the very idea of a real relationship with Ivy, he approached it expecting it to fail - whether he saw it that way or not. Ivy on the other head, made it very clear that she was his and she was all in, and I believe her assurance and confidence in the relationship is what scared Eli. Also, Eli was always caught up in the financial difference between them, it made him really uncomfortable. Now, I clutched my pearls and held on to them when Ms. Ivy laid it all out in the streets for Mr. Eli and told him:
Eli, it's time to man up or back off. All while making sure she DID NOT break eye contact with him.
The supporting cast of Jaden (Ivy's son), Gavin (Ivy's ex-husband and Jaden's father), Zion (Eli's son) and Stacy (Eli's ex-wife and Zion's "mother"). Now I mention these folks because (particularly the exes) have so much influence, albeit without their knowledge, of the possible failure and/or success of what is Ivy's and Eli's relationship. Some of these folks were like old scars, some new revelations, but they all were pivotal and worth getting to know.
Not one character felt out of place or unnecessary in this book, even down to the mothers and best friends.
I recently discovered this author and have not been disappointed in her. Her writing style is that in which you really feel connected and familiar with the characters and you hate to see them go when it's all over.
There were some grammatical errors throughout the book, and if these are fixed, I can totally see this being a five star story without a doubt.
Instead of it being a book where not much happens, it was a book where a man met a woman and they worked through some things to start a real relationship.
Nia Forrester's stories have a way of pulling me in through a gently opening door, offering a comfortable seat with soft blanket thrown over my feet and a lavender scented pillow at my head...regardless of what is really going on in the actual world around me. Ivy's League is a thoughtful and thought provoking story about relationships between lovers, family members (adults and children) and friends. This story manages in very short order to completely capture all of the feelings, challenges and triumphs that the smart, sexy and mostly well meaning characters have come to share. Nia is the master of weaving the perfect backstory and squeezing even the tinniest drop of empathy out of me for the least likable characters. There are a few well placed surprises, the humor is on point and the love scenes are perfect. Thank you Nia for keeping the standards high in this genre.
Well damn Ms. Forrester. I want to say "PREACH" but that's just sounds too cliché. Aww hell, "PREACH".
The two main characters are so well written with a supporting cast of about dozen others, who are equally as well written.
I don't ask much from my author's. I simply want dynamic & relatable characters, chemistry, grown up sex scenes, grammar check and writing that makes me want to laugh cry or scream. Well this cleverly modern tale of 'is she too good for him' has all of those and more.
The book is so real and true to life, Ms. Forrester should change the genre to non-fiction romance. Every reader knows one of these characters or IS one of these characters.
This was an incredible read. Definitely recommend.
I LOVED this book! This story had a lot more dialogue than I think Nia usually includes in her books (as far as I can recall, anyway) which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. Internal monologues are nice, but I prefer reading actual conversations between the characters.
And I loved loved Eli and Ivy. Eli was stubborn as a mule, but I (mostly) understood his struggle. I'm just glad he and Ivy weathered the storm together. I even shed a few tears at some of their exchanges. I did notice a few typos/spelling errors, but there weren't so many that I wasn't able to enjoy the story.
I look forward to reading more books like this from Nia!
That has to be my favorite line of the entire book! There was something about this story that just resonated with me. Ivy and Eli seemed like real people. They could be your friend, cousin, brother or sister. These characters were just so relate-able, and their relationship was real! It wasn't the normal rich guy beautiful woman story line, there was substance here. These two had plenty of good times, but also dealt with real life issues. This was a short book for Nia's standards, and now that my appetite has had a taste, I want a lot more of these two. I feel like their story is far from over.
Nia Forrester is my absolute FAVORITE author. This book was the breath of fresh air that I desired. After reading so many horrible books, this book gave me hope that real authors still exist and they still write with passion. As a hopeless romantic this book left me dreading it's end and once I finished the book I wanted more and more. Thanks for the amazing novella. I cannot wait to read more of your works.
I enjoyed Ivy’s League! This was my kind of romance novel. Nothing will always be sweet. Situations will happen and that’s exactly what plagued Ivy and Eli.
I was on the fence on some parts though! Lol! Nothing is worse than a man with too much pride! That can really ruin a relationship. Eli was not budging ya hear me!! Lol His wife x really did a number on him.
Ivy was so content with her mom life and work life, however she was missing that one special piece in her love life. After divorcing her f@ck-boy ex-husband she needed someone to make her feel whole again. Could Mr. Tool Belt be that saving grace?! They definitely had some heavy hills to climb.
I liked Ivy and Eli, even though he got on my nerves at time. I understand men and their ego's, but I wanted to shake Eli and scream, "Let her help you.!" I loved she told Eli to man up or back. She was over playing games with him. I liked there wasn't any drama, just two people trying to navigate a new relationship.
3.5⭐️🌶️ This was a pretty good story. I did not like the miscommunication that the two main characters had between them, and I did not like that. Eli was all macho macho, but Ivy was exactly what he needed.
Ivy's League is the story of a woman who has made a good life for herself. She has a great job, a smart, loving son and a home in an upperclass neighborhood. From the outside looking in, there is nothing to suggest that she isn't completely happy.
What we soon learn is Ivy is lonely and not just for want of a man. She doesn't have many close friends and as for family, there's only her aunt and mother. She spends most weekends alone when her son is off with her father (from whom she's divorced).
Ivy's son is enrolled in a private school. This is where we meet Eli, whose son is also enrolled at the school. Ivy and Eli have been eyeing each other for a while as they drop their sons off but it isn't until one fateful day that Ivy stumbles and falls that they actually speak to each other.
Eli is struggling as a single father who is raising his son full time with no help from the mother. He has his own construction business but money is always an issue. His son's mother came from a life of privilege and he always felt like he never measured up to her so he has no intention of getting deeply involved with Ivy, who he feels is too similar to his ex.
I love that although Ivy is clearly independent, strong and doesn't need a man to take care of her, she is still vulnerable and not afraid to show her vulnerability to Eli. She doesn't walk around shouting her independence with her nose in the air. Her professional demeanor is in complete contrast with who she truly is as a person.
Eli is an extremely proud man. He is in no way chauvinistic but he refuses to let Ivy help him financially. He falls for her quickly and although he sees Ivy for who she really is behind the icy facade, he holds back from falling too deeply because he doesn't want a repeat of what he went through with his ex.
This story was so real. It's the story of many. Many women who are in Ivy's position who question if they should get involved with a man who isn't as educated or financially stable as them. Women who have friends in their ear telling them they shouldn't. But at the root of it all is a true love story. We get to see Ivy and Eli work together to overcome every obstacle in their path to being together.
These characters are easy to fall in love with and root for. There is no question about their chemistry and surprisingly, their compatibility.
Nia Forrester continues to be one of my favorite authors in this genre. She simply does not disappoint.
Ivy Livingstone is every woman. Divorced, mother of one and a mover and shaker in the political arena. Eli Thomason is a divorced, father of one and a small business owner. They meet when Ivy fall and literally shows her behind to him in their children's school parking lot.
There is immediate chemistry and the remnant of the baggage that they both carry from previous relationships.
I love that there is a ying and yang quality to this story. She is a mover and a shaker, he is a struggling small business contractor, but they compliment each other. I love that Eli is the type of man that wants to conquer his own demons, without having Ivy swoop in slay them for him.
Ms. Forrester has again created character that are well developed and her story grabs you from page one. She never disappoints.
Once again, Nia Forrester has taken me there with her Intriguing Characters, as their chemistry oozed from beginning to end. I felt as if I were a part of the story. Ivy and Eli were totally different but very much alike in so many ways. The flow of this story was so smooth that I found myself hesitating to stop reading before reading it in its entirety. A definite must read that does not disappoint. Please say that this is not the end Nia!
When I finished reading this book "Wait for Love" by Luther Vandross came to mind. Relationships aren't perfect, when two people are willing to work on its what's perfect for that person. I so loved this book!
Having read “The Lover” first this was backwards reading hence having parts of the answers to this relationship’s mystery without knowing where it started. Ivy and Eli both had ex issues but different ways to resolve them. Even their needs to resolve them were different. Wish there had been more about how Ivy got to be who she was, a little more about her story including her relationship with her mother and her aunt. However it’s not a pressing need like with some of Ms. Forrester’s other characters. There’s no need to check in even though the book I read first does a good job of letting the reader know more about how things turned out. Hmm. Maybe there is a need to check in on her, maybe a need to re-read the next book.
It was okay. As always, well written, emotional and raw. I guess I just didn’t LOVE the characters. And that happens! Sometimes we don’t fall in love with characters and so we don’t always connect. Maybe it was because I couldn’t see myself as Ivy, but it doesn’t mean that the next reader wouldn’t love them!! I think it was probably that they were both divorced and parents that made it so that I didn’t connect; since that hasn’t been my experience. Overall I thought it was okay.
I can’t say this was bad but it really didn’t meet my expectations and I just didn’t like Eli he annoyed me. I get he had his insecurities or whatever but he was so whiny, and jealous, and he expected Ivy to be like a damn caretaker while also not allowing her to fully help him. I didn’t find him appealing or compelling in the slightest. Ivy was amazing though and I really tried to push through it for her. I mostly skimmed through it after the first 60% so I couldn’t justify giving it a star rating
I am in love Nia Forrester! Elegant writing combined with a captivating plot. Nia spoils her readers and I am hooked. I hate I am just now getting on the Nia bandwagon. Sis can write!!!! I loved Eli and Ivy, I truly did, I didn’t want this story to end. 2 just to good as people that found love and their love was everything.
I was kind of hesitant about Eli going onto debt rather than accepting Ivy's help but the way he handled his business proved he was a true independent man. They both had a complex that they had to grow from in order for their relationship to get stronger and they did. I hope their relationship last the test of time.
Dynamic between couple was interesting but not very well explored. Also there are contradicting statements on both characters. All in all it was beautifully written but writing wasn’t pushed enough as to where I felt butterflies into te shown romance. Books felt incomplete as there was no resulution to anything.
This was a quick read; the story was pretty good but it left a lot up for question. I had several follow up questions and didn’t care for the MMCs thoughts regarding finances. There were other things that annoyed me as well but more so along the lines of how the book ended…seems there should have been a second book so we could understand how things turned out and why certain decisions were made.
