Kippei has a reputation of being a playboy and for not caring all too much about school. His whole daily routine is thrown upside down when his 5-year old cousin Yuzuyu is delivered to his home. After the death of Yuzuyu's father, her mother has found herself unable to care for Yuzuyu and has thus sent her to live with her relatives. Kippei doesn't know much about childcare but he finds himself enjoying his time spent with Yuzuyu and the two form a bond.
Although I really like Maki Yōko, I have never read this early work of hers until now. I appreciate Maki's works not only for the art but also for often breaking free of shoujo norms. Aishiteruze Baby was no exception in this regard, although that was probably also part of the reason why I hadn't picked it up sooner. When this was originally published, I'd be lying if I'd say I cared much for stories about childcare. In addition, I found the covers very unappealing - I'm afraid I still do as they are so awfully busy and crowded. Nonetheless, after years of reading Maki's works I thought it was finally time to give this one a go.
I don't think this manga will work for everyone because similar to me a couple of years ago, not everyone will be interested in the childcare aspect of this manga. I imagine many people will pick up a shoujo romance expecting exactly that: romance. And while this manga does have some romance, its focus is without a doubt on the relationship between Kippei and Yuzuyu as well as how she deals with feelings of abandonment. As a whole, this is a very heartfelt story with great relationships. A lot of the side characters initially come across as rather annoying but the plot takes some time to let us get to know them and this is one of the few manga I've ever read where pretty much all characters are likeable.
I really liked Kippei as a main character, although I'm tempted to say that he was unrealistically kind to everyone which also made his bad reputation seem a bit weird. There is a generally degree of things not being very realistic in this story to begin with: it's certainly not unheard of but I do find Yuzuyu's mother's behaviour a little questionable. Kokoro - Kippei's love interest - also seems to have a rather odd relationship to her parents and I found it a tad unrealistic how she could just up and move in with people in the blink of an eye.
Otherwise, this was a really nice plot that explores various aspects of childcare and family issues. And while those might sound like heavy subjects, this is mostly a lighthearted feel good manga. Yuzuyu is a little ray of sunshine, Kokoro seems a little stoic but turns out to be really cute once she loosens up a bit. The romance between Kippei and Kokoro initially seemed to come a little out of nowhere but I actually really enjoyed how their relationship developed.
I struggled a little with Maki's art in the first chapters - I love her style but this earlier work often leaves characters with oddly blank eyes. I think in the beginning Yuzuyu was the only character I found aesthetically well done. By the end of the series, the art isn't quite what it is in her latest works but it's definitely beautifully drawn and featuring characters with expressive faces where no text is required.
The ending was a tad rushed and I wouldn't have minded a more detailed epilogue, but it doesn't take away from the over all experience reading this manga. As long as you aren't looking purely for a romance manga and enjoy stories revolving around little children, this is definitely a cute and worthwhile pick.
Loved it. The only thing keeping it from being five stars is that I still feel that the characters are a bit shallow. I'm hoping they develop more as the series progresses.
Estoy muy contenta de haber descubierto la historia de Baby my love, y espero poder continuarla porque ha sido de lo más divertida y tierna. Reseña completa: https://fiebrelectora.blogspot.com/20...
I wasn't super fond of the beginning and not sure why I felt a disconnect, but once Yuzu was more active on page, oh my goodness it was so cute!
Kippei really shows growth just in this first volume and was really impressed with his character! He really transforms as a young man so that he can be a "Mommy" to this new young girl in his life. I really enjoyed seeing that change as the story progressed and how he really DOES strive to be something more to Yuzu. It truly was so sweet!
Yuzu is of course adorable and could *NOT* stand that one character that says things to her! Like no! Get away from our sweet Yuzu!
Overall, this was a fun read! I'm looking forward to reading the next volume, especially with that cliff hanger!
Kippei, a handsome boy who "plays" with a lot of girls in his school, is suddenly called on to take care of his little cousin who has been abandoned by her mother.
This is cute, but I'm having a hard time getting any sense of personality or individuality from Yusuzu, the child. Even at age five, kids are different from each other. I kind of like Kokoro, Kippei's classmate who doesn't fall for his womanizing tricks and who is also pretty obviously his future love interest.
This manga is weird, man. It sorta has a romance feel all over it, but it's about a high school boy and his 5-year-old female cousin, so that's uncomfortable. In this volume, there are two instances where other characters tell the protagonist off for being too forward with his cousin (leave him alone, all he did was give her a hug); and there's one 'joke' where his mom yells "just what are you doing to your mother" like he's trying to do something to her. Why, mangaka? You could have also not.
The paneling is so busy it makes me dizzy.
I do like this character Kokoro. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that she ends up dating the protagonist.
Another thing I liked about this volume was the focus on Yuzu's feelings. Yeah she's five, but she sorta understands what's going on with her mom abandoning her, and she's scared her new family will leave her, too. Sweet child, we must protecc.
One more thing to comment on is the protagonist has a wholeass family, yet they make him Yuzu's primary caretaker. Excuse me, this boy is a child! Let his parents or older-sister-who-has-a-job take the kid to school and make her bento! Smh fr.
This has to be the cutest manga I've read so far. I think most of the stars I'm giving this are because f the drawing style, which makes baby Yuzu, with her big eyes and sweet smile, the cutest manga character I've seen.
This manga revolves around teenager Kippei who is entrusted with his 5-years-old cousin, and he has to take care of her , until the return of her mother who disappeared. A lot of things don't make sense, why would they choose Kippei who's really careless, when he has a younger -more responsible- brother, older sister, a mother, and a father. secondly, Kippei agrees -and changes- way too fast to this change of events. He wasn't a bad guy, but the drastic change in his character in just a day doesn't make sense.
All of this aside, I couldn't help but love the interactions of Yuzu and Kippei, they make the cutest siblings.
Es un relectura pero me sigue pareciendo igual de tierno que la primera vez que lo leí, me gusta la evolución que tiene kippei, las dudas y miedos de la pequeña Yuzu. Quiero volver a describir esta historia.
As is the case with a lot of shojo manga, this story is not quite believable. But, that doesn't mean that it wasn't fun. A high school playboy finds himself the sole caretaker of his little cousin after his aunt skips town (He lives with his entire family, but with three adults in the house, plus him and his little brother, apparently, he's the only one who has to do anything to care for this little girl!) Also,
Still, the story is cute so far, and has a lot of potential. The characters still feel a bit shallow and undeveloped, but there are hints at a lot to come, including a potential relationship between two of them. And I think we'll see a lot of growth in Kippei. I'm looking forward to it.
I went into this with low expectations. I could tell the plot would be decent but weird and, from the extremely busy cover, that the art wasn't going to be my favorite. I have two or three favorite parts about this, which is compelling enough for me to read the next volumes.
I liked the story, even though it was quite unrealistic. A 17 year old boy is ordered to take care of his 5 year old cousin while the rest of his family tries to locate the cousin's mother. The rest of the family doesn't take care of the 5 yo and the full care-taking and upbringing is now placed on the boy's shoulders.
This has a male main character, which is rare in shojo manga. I think this is my first shojo with a male MC and I'm honestly so glad. I wish there were more! Even though I like the idea, I don't like his personality. He is a playboy and apparently has slept around with a lot of the girls. (Gross. Ugh. Is this how the author thinks all guys are like?) I found he was sweet when he was taking care of his cousin, though, so that made him bearable.
His cousin is a five year old girl who is trying her best. She cares a lot for her cousin because he is actually showing her the love and attention she needs and didn't get from her mom (I suspect). She's precious and my motive for continuing the series.
The art is okay. Not my favorite. I shall just deal with it because I like the story (mostly).
It first saw Aishiteruze Baby as a subbed anime. I don't know if it is dubbed into English, yet. I love the fact that this manga is translated into English. I love all the main characters, especially Kippei, the teenage boy; Yuzuyu, the little 5 year old girl cousin; Kokoro, a girl at Kippei's high school; and Satskui, Kippei's little brother. This first episode is about how little Yuzu's mother abandoned her, and how Kippei's family took her in. Kippei is given the responsibility of taking care of her, and the teenager and child grow to love each other. I gave this first volume 5 stars. Also, the action anime is very much like the manga, except the anime is in Japanese, subbed into English; the manga is translated into English. I recommend both the anime and manga versions to anyone who enjoy a sweet love story between a teenager and a little child!
Re-read April 2023: A fun little trip down memory lane. Aishiteruze Baby is one of the first mangas I ever read, back in junior high. The story follows a thoughtless high school playboy named Kippei who is suddenly thrust into responsibility when tasked with caring for his 5-year-old cousin, Yuzuyu. This series might be the origin of my penchant for the "Accidental Baby Acquisition" trope. It's definitely dated in a few ways, but still pretty cute. Not a fan of the way Yuzu constantly refers to herself in the third person--I wonder if that's a translation choice? I like the art style a lot; it definitely feels very early-'00s!
TW: child abandonment, past parent death, stalking, jokes about pedophilia, bullying
This is a cute little manga, published in 2002. 2006 in English. You can tell some of the content is a little dated and the fact that his family keep suggesting he may be into children is a lil disturbing. But it’s a heartwarming story about a teenager who has to re-examine how he treats women after caring for his younger cousin.
The fact that the mean girl is ugly and into him wasn’t lost on me but this is 18 years ago in Japan so I can’t say I’m surprised. I enjoyed it and I’ll pick up the next volume
Okay… I don’t like the girls just throwing themselves at Kippei. Can’t wait for him to fall in love and have these hoes go away LOL. I’m already so in love with Yuzu!!!! She’s precious!!!! I can’t see any good reason for her mom to abandon her like this!!!! And Kokoro… I love her too. She doesn’t take Kippei’s shit lol.
This series was alright. I think at the time I remember thinking this was a poor man's 'Baby & Me', a surprisingly good manga series centered around the cutest little kit you've ever seen. I read this whole series then turned around and sold it. Not a fav.
This is so cute! I thought there'd be more character development for the main dude, Kippei but he jumps straight into pseudo-parenthood like a fish to water. Huh. It's cute though so I'm enjoying it.
This manga was so freaking adorable that I swear my heart ached at some points during this reading. Argh... SO PRECIOUS! I´m going to devour every single one of these volumes before the day is over.
Zum Glück habe ich diese Manga reihe am ganzen Stück in meiner örtlichen Bücherrei gefunden .Denn sie ist einfach so niedlich :) ich lese gleich den 2. Band ich bin jetzt schon absolute süchtig.
This was a pretty cute read with a unique premise. I like the art, and Kippei and his little cousin Yazuyu are nice characters. I'll definitely continue the series. 4 stars.
This story got totally randomly on my to-read list and has been there for more than 4 months until one night I just started reading it out of blue. I finished it in less then 3 hours and loved it a lot. It has an interesting concept and the ending quite sucked, because it didn’t quite show if Kippei ended up with Kokoro-chan. Though I sure hope it was implied. Because if not, I’m booking a plane ticket to Japan to band on the author’s door to know the truth.
The story is fantastic. It shows how our lives can be changed in a matter o a minute. One day you are a normal high school student who’s very frivolous with girls, but then one day a 5-year-old appears on the porch of your house and your sister puts you in charge of taking care of her. Fun? As if! You get tons of problems because of her. You’ll have to learn how to cook, take care of a kid and eventually you’ll find the person who will be closest to you in the future. Are you ready to get to know Kippei? Our frivolous guy who is taking care of his cousin? He’s a fantastic character, that I really enjoyed. I also loved Kokoro-chan, Kippei’s love interest. She’s awesome, she reminded me of myself a lot, but I have yet to fall in love.
Enjoy this romantic, yet tragic in some cases story. You’ll get to see what it means to be a parent and you need to read closely as there will be lots of issues that you have to know about! Enjoy it to your fullest and don’t forget to share your thoughts below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as promos. Don’t miss your next favourite book or manga! Happy reading!
