The growing power in Sable’s words nearly changed the world. Until she was betrayed and silenced.

A year ago on the land’s biggest stage, Sable’s voice nearly burned down the carefully constructed lies of the Kalesh Empire.

Now, Sable’s skills are merely tools in High Prioress Vivaine’s desperate negotiations with the new Kalesh Ambassador, who’s denounced Sable as a zabat. A rebel. A firestarter.

Sable would love nothing more than to burn down the Empire.

But with threats against her sisters looming, the acting troupe driven away, and no news of Reese for a year, she’s too chained and alone to even light a spark.

Meanwhile, the Empire grows on the south like a disease and stretches its poisoned fingers even into the northern lands.

Desperate to fight, Sable sends details about the Kalesh to the one ember of hope kindling in the north - a small, mysterious band of rebels.

Vivaine hates the rebellion, though, and her spies have discovered their location—and that Sable is more deeply connected to them than she knows. Unless Sable turns her back on the rebellion and pledges loyalty to Vivaine, the prioress will reveal the rebel camp to the Kalesh.

But Vivaine should not be so rash, because the power of Sable’s voice is stirring again, the old coals being stoked into flames.

And she’s ready to embrace the title of zabat.

10 stars! What do you mean, I can't give 10 stars? *grumbles*

Ok, ok... So I shall go with a nice round 5, as this book directly jumped onto my shelf of all-time favourites. It is at least as good as book one, if not even better! I was hooked body and soul, and wanted to decapitate everyone and everything that kept me away from the story. No wonder I devoured it in just 3 days. Luckily no one was hurt!

First off:
If you can, I'd recommend to read "The Ghost of the White Wood" between Dragon's Reach and this. You definitely do not need it to understand Raven's Ruin, but you'll have a few nice "aha!" moments along the way, as that book is mentioned in Raven's Ruin. (It's free for download by signing up for the authors email list on jaandrews.com/ghost )

So, to Raven's Ruin itself:
I love the prose, the characters, the voice, the plot, the world, the magic, ...

This starts of with a smallish scope, concentrating on Sable and her new life at the Dragon Priory. throughout the story the world and the stakes keep ever increasing, until the fate of the whole country hangs on a few thin threads, and the suspense is all the way up.

I love the mix of Sable's own personal struggles, her trying to fight for freedom, while choosing between her own fate, that of the country and those of her loved ones. It gives so much more depth to the story, and I confess this story had me fetch the emotional comfort chocolate at times.

Andrew's masterfully manages to write a story without explicit gore or violence, but still with high stakes, loss, death, despair and always a dash of hope.

The friendships and bonds between the characters are of the major strengths in The Keeper Origins, and they only grew and evolve throughout the series. I dearly wish there was more books with a focus on friendships rather than only romance.

And for the romance part - if you follow my reviews, you know that I usually don't like most romance in my fantasy books. There is a romance in Raven's Ruin, but it doesn't take center stage and isn't at all the focus of the plot. It is a natural part of character progression, and felt like a smooth and natural part of the story. I actually quite enjoyed it - and if that isn't one of the highest compliments I can give, I don't know what is!

Stunning 2nd book in the series! This book kept me on my toes throughout, nothing is how I presumed it would be! Let's face it, when one reads a book, one gets a sense of what will or could happen. Boy oh boy, not this one! As Sable's character expands and her knowledge of her power starts evolving, and she gets stronger, both emotionally and mentally. She is drawn into the most unbelievable situations, all while trying to prevent a foreign empire from conquering her country. Once again forced into slavery this time to the conniving Dragon Prioress. To save her friends and her sisters, she is forced to into servitude. I loved reading about Sable's interactions with Narine but I especially loved Innov, I only wish she could talk! And as for Reese and Sable's fledgling relationship, well, at times I was saying out loud, go on, kiss already! When they eventually did, suffice to say, I was not expecting that! The allegiances Sable makes, her companions and her strong presence throughout is a delight to follow! From personal issues to military issues, the story flows smoothly, albeit totally unpredictably! But that's precisely what makes this a do not miss out book! Read it now!

My favorite fantasy cast is back in this second installment of the Keeper Origins! The story starts out at a gentle pace but soon builds as the plot twists and turns with new characters, new revelations, and plenty of action and adventure.

I love Andrews' voice, relatable characters, and immersive world so much--is it next year yet?

It's been a long time since I loved a MC as much as I love Sable. All at once steadfast, yet impassioned; firm, yet empathetic; powerful, and yet kind, she is a fully-fleshed out character who not only feels real, but is someone you genuinely wish you could have as a friend.

JA Andrews annoys me as an author.

Mostly cause I don't like epic fantasy. I don't like massive literary chonkers that take weeks to read. I don't like long, windy journeys... And yet I can't put this series down. Do you know how many books I have on my TBR? If I could physically stack all those titles in a tower on my nightstand, I'd be genuinely worried that they'd topple over during the night and smother me in my sleep. And yet, here I am, looking at her next chonky boy/blunt-force weapon of a book, Phoenix Rising, and longing to read it.

Anyway. This is a brilliant book. Go read it. And then go read every other thing JA Andrews has ever written, because she's one of the greatest fantasy writers of our time.

As a fellow author, I am offended at how great Andrews is with dialog. I could just read these characters talking around a campfire for days, and enjoy every second of it.

This series is fantastic, and this book upped the stakes, upped the tension, and upped the character growth. While I'm not usually a fan of too much time spent on politics, these characters are just so relatable and warm that I gobbled up every second of it.

While I did end up guessing the big twist at the end ahead of time, it was still incredibly satisfying to watch the repercussions play out. And even then, the ending continued to twist and turn until the final pages.

Overall, highly recommend for fans of hopeful epic fantasy without the darkness that is so popular these days. Looking forward to getting to book 3...someday.

Oh, and obviously I can't end without saying: Team Purn 4 lyfe!

The first book in The Keeper Origins, Dragon’s Reach, was one of my favorite books last year. It kept me up at night and it swept me away to a world far beyond my own dark chambers. When I recently learned of the imminent release of the second part in the series, I realized it was once more time to make irresponsible decisions about sleep.

Three very late nights, and an afternoon that turned dark way too fast, that’s how long it took – followed by an evening of despair (well, okay, mild annoyance) as I agonized over how I’d have to wait another year to read book three. It’s annoying, but I’ll wait. It’s worth it.

This is the good stuff.

This book put its claws in me and didn’t let go. After I finished, while reading another book, I kept wondering why the main character couldn’t hear the lies in the words spoken to her, and I had to remind myself they weren’t Sable. Yes, seriously.

Raven’s Ruin takes over where Dragon’s Reach ended, where Sable finds herself in a situation she’d never predicted, and in which she has no desire to be. She struggles at the sidelines as major events unfold, feeling weak and powerless, trying desperately to get back on her feet and find her own voice in the world.

Eventually, she does. Slowly, at first, but then with more courage and confidence. It’s predictable in the good way, where you can tell what’s going on and what’s coming, but instead of losing interest, you’re filled with anticipation and excitement at what the future holds.

And still, the story twists and turns, and nothing’s ever really certain.

Raven’s Ruin is not a fast-paced, action packed adventure, but its tense and thrilling all the same. There’s a realness to Sable and the characters around her. A solidity to the world. A joy in the magic explored.

What I’ll Whine About
More than once, I caught myself thinking that Vivaine made a lot of sense, and that Sable was a bit dense not to see it. I’m not sure whether that says more about me or about the book, though.

What I’ll Gush About
This is the kind of book, story, and writing that just oozes solid quality, from the cover, to the maps, to the tie in story that I still haven’t read but that I know is there. It’s epic fantasy the way I want it to be. There’s really no good point to put the book down and go to sleep (maybe that should come under whining?). Even in the quiet moments, the story is warm and comfortable enough that I’m reluctant to step away from it.

Fear. One thing that keeps coming back, over and over again, is the question “what are you afraid of?” It tells of how we all carry our own fears within us, and how everyone’s afraid of something. It shows that opening up to our fears is a way of conquering them.

I really enjoy this kind of commentary on what it means to be human. It’s not overbearing or preaching, but it’s present enough to be a factor in the story, and it enriches the reading experience.

Final Words
At well over 700 pages, this is a chonker of a book, but it’s worth every tired yawn the day after.

This picks up right where the tension left off in Dragon's Reach, and it’s an incredible sequel that really delivers. I wasn’t sure where things would stand after the ending of the first book, but this second installment takes the story to even more interesting places. The stakes are higher, the characters are even more complex, and the growing rebellion adds a thrilling undercurrent to everything.

I love me some character growth. Sable comes into her own, and her strained relationships continue to develop in such meaningful ways. The bond between them feels real and sometimes messy. I also loved getting a deeper look at the villains, who are far more than just one-dimensional antagonists. They’re fully realized characters with their own motives, making the story that much richer.

The political intrigue and the ever-present threat of Vivaine keep the tension simmering throughout. There’s a real sense that everything is building toward something incredible.

It’s a huge testament to the story that I read this trilogy back-to-back without pausing. I almost never do that, but this series is just that good. Raven's Ruin doesn’t suffer from the usual middle-book slump—it pushes the story forward with even more intensity and heart.

This is such an incredible series, I am enjoying every moment of reading it. I've grown to love these characters and have become immersed in the magical world. Sable has grown so much, and in this book she learns more about her past. More is at stake now as she and her found family must fight to stop the Empire from taking their land.

I loved the twists and turns the plot took, and the return of all my favorite characters. This book has an explosive ending, so I can't wait to start the last book in the series.

2.5. I would be extremely proud of myself if I wrote this book and got published, so don't get me wrong. I wasn't a big fan of the second book because Sable made sooooooooooooo many ridiculous decisions and was so lacking any strategy with her actions I might as well have been following around the POV of a peasant who just keeps getting cool things. This dynamic worked in the first book because she was a peasant nobody with no connection to power and I was content to just follow her around. However she never grew into anything believable to follow despite knowing she's destined for more. All the characters in the book seemed convinced of it, but this fair reader was absolutely not convinced. I have never felt any emotions around her and her love interest, and cannot forgive her for what she did to the general. I won't be reading the last book.

This was the first book by JA Andrews I read that didn’t have me flying through the pages (and I read all of her published works). Although I can see the importance to the series of all things that took place in this second installment, I really felt like at least 3/4 of the book was laking in action and relevant situations.
Despite being a really beautiful story and I had chills on every chapter Innov was in (love her btw), I felt like the storytelling could be more fast paced and dynamic.
I’ll definitely finish the series, specially since towards the final quarter the story finally picks up the pace I was hoping through the whole book, and it still is an amazing and beautiful epic fantasy totally worth reading!

Raven’s Ruin is the second book in the Keeper Origins series. The book opens with Sable trapped, away from any allies. Everyone around her wants to control her, use her. Silence her. She wants to protect her home—the Kalesh Empire are encroaching more and more. She wants to protect her loved ones—even if they hate her.
This story picks up right where book 1 left off, right after a “previously on”—which, I must say: this was the most creative, cleverly done “previously on” I’ve ever seen. Told in the writings of a charming writer in the world(Flibbet the Peddler, for those who’ve read Keeper Chronicles), it’s a short, sweet reminder of what went down in book 1 without being boring.
I digress. It took absolutely no time to be totally engrossed in the story again in chapter 1. The stunning descriptions, the characters and their conflicting motives—everything sucks you in right away.
This story is a tapestry. So many threads, so many players, all woven together masterfully. Everyone we met in book 1 we see again here, as well as many new faces: some I came to love just as much as book 1’s characters, some were just… awful. Ugh. But every single character was real, fleshed out and so much more than just a character on the page. I loved everything about this book, but the characters are what truly made it shine, from the phoenix(THE STUNNING PHOENIX ) to the love interest, to every ally and every antagonist. Even better than the individuals, the relationships between the characters are all… the best. They’re real and complicated and rich.
I especially enjoyed seeing the growth in Sable, the main character, throughout this story. She is a far cry from the girl we meet at the beginning of book 1, and I love her to pieces. She’s aware of her faults, but that doesn’t hold her back from doing what she believes is right—no matter how reckless or dangerous. She’s complex, warm, honest, and strong.
The plot moved at a good pace—it was never boring, never rushed, and had just enough surprising turns to keep me on my toes. Some absolutely heart-wrenching moments happen, but it is perfectly balanced with humor(I laughed out loud A LOT. Don’t read this near sleeping babies.) and touching scenes. Not to mention the moments of insight(in true Andrews fashion; this has happened to me with every one of her books) that made me stop and reread it because it hit with the weight of a deep truth.
I loved this book. I await book 3 in agony.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are all my own, though.

J. A. Andrews writes some of the best epic fantasy I’ve ever read. Every one of her stories is enthralling, usually from page one. Raven’s Ruin is no exception. It’s the kind of book that will have you immediately looking for everything this author has published.

Sable is held captive by the High Prioress. Her youngest sister is also in the priory, with the Prioress of the Horn. Sable will do anything to keep her sisters safe, even spy for the Prioress of the Dragon, the High Prioress.

But being assigned as care giver to the elderly Prioress of the Phoenix isn’t anything like what Sable expected. This prioress is the kindest, most honest person Sable has ever met.

Will Sable stay within the priories and aid the High Prioress as she treats with her country’s enemies? Or will she find a way to free herself and her sisters? But as the enemy gains influence, can anyone remain free?

Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, and waiting with much anticipation, after being left dangling on a cliffhanger, I was more than happy to receive an ARC for an honest review. One could think after the first book that Sable truly deserved a break and couldn’t possibly get into any more impossible situations, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Cut off from everyone she loves and once again being manipulated and controlled, she finds an ally and solace where she least expects it.
Unexpected twists and turns find her battling on enemy on two fronts as she begins to understand and grow into her powers.
Amidst bittersweet reunions there is also heartache and impossible odds to overcome.
Enthralling from beginning to end and impossible to predict what is going to happen next.
Leaving us once again with a heart wrenching conclusion, I will be dangling with much anticipation until the final instalment!

There is no doubt about the writing talent and master storytelling from JA Andrews. Raven's Ruin proves it. . As we follow Sable in her determination to protect her loved ones and save her homeland, and to watch those who would see her fail, there us no end to Sable's adventure. With grand world building, ( the kind that makes you believe you are there), charismatic and sometimes complex characters, intrigue, politics, high tension and just plain daring adventure, this book will keep you immersed throughout. A remarkable and clever novel. You just can't put it down. So if you are looking for some gripping and exciting storytelling then this is it!!!

Removing the stakes two thirds of the way through was certainly a choice. It seemed each time there was an opportunity for an interesting choice, the more boring option prevailed. Could Sable have done something during her year time skip to train her voice? Could the dwarves have been the reinforcing army and played any role? Could Sable face any repercussions for constantly putting herself in the most dangerous situation possible? Could the monks who abhor violence but are skilled warriors have done something about an execution and an assassination? Could we have learned more about the tree talk? Could Sable have learned anything from the books on magic? Everything always works out just fine.

Also, what happened to the northern lords being completely beholden to the Kalesh and their armies being controlled by the Kalesh? And why are the people suddenly cool with a Baladin?

I never thought that a sequel would be better than the original. My expectations were blown away by the delivery of this author's talented writing. I felt like part of the story and I am very attached to all of the characters for better or for worse. I think I am going to fade away slowly waiting for the final installment because I have to know how this ends. Actually I need to know yesterday but I suppose I will remind myself that it is worth the wait. THIS WAS EPIC-GO READ NOW! (Add vitalle from Sable here) Side note-go read the Ghost of the White Wood story the minute it is mentioned from the author's website-a perfect compliment to a perfect story.

Queensland is insidiously being invaded by the Empire, and the Kalesh are mining for gold and taking this back to the Dragon Empire. Vivaine, the High Prioress of Immusmala is negotiating with the Kalesh. She intends keeping her city free and herself in power and she vowed she would do anything to do so. On the other hand Issable, has been forced to pledge her loyalty to the priories and to use her powers to gauge the truth of anyone Vivaine negotiated with. Sable was forced to do this in order to save her friend Reese and the troupe. Sable contrary to Vivaine would do anything in her power to see the Kalesh gone from her country so when she found out that Reese was working with Tanis and the rebels she was intent on helping them till she could finally join their forces. Sable was looking after Narine, the prioress of the Phoenix Priory, a good and gentle woman who just wanted to stay away from politics and turmoil especially as her life was nearing it’s end. Sable loved Narine and was protective of her so when a peace summit was to be held on the island of Tutella and Narine refused to attend, Sable vowed to keep her away but things took a different turn and during that summit so much happened which brought to a head the differences between Vivaine and Sable and their great animosity continued to escalate. Queensland was a land divided with the lords of the north fighting and bickering among themselves about petty affairs and snubbing the South and the Kalesh thrived because of this division. Vivaine also played on this divide and thought to use it to her advantage but she was not reckoning on Sable and her courage. I really enjoyed this 2nd book of the keeper origins, and though it is such a lengthy tome I did not want it to come to an end. I particularly enjoyed reading about Flibbet the peddlar, and Pernicious the Kobold who is so protective of Sable and so mischievous. I also loved the fact that the three prioresses were linked to their animals, almost like a familiar, the unicorn, the dragon and the phoenix, all powerful but different in their own special ways. I also enjoyed seeing the romance grow between Reese and Sable and I hope this continues in book 3 which I am already looking forward to in anticipation. Ms. Andrews has given us another brilliant epic fantasy novel with a kick-ass heroine whose strengths are growing steadily stronger. Sable will be unstoppable I think in book 3!

Raven's Ruin is the second book in The Keeper Origins by J.A. Andrews. The first book ended with Sable being trapped into serving Vivaine, a powerful and conniving High Prioress, in order to save her friends and spare Reese from a hanging. Sable has been there a year when the second book starts.

Sable wants the Kalesh presence removed from their borders. The Kalesh say that they are interested in making trade deals with both nations benefiting, but they have a reputation for conquering nations and absorbing them into the empire. There are many different players taking different sides. What can one young woman do?

Sable needs allies but she's making enemies faster. She's also under Vivaine's machinations.

This story is full of suspense and intrigue. There's also an interesting magic system. Sable experiences character growth and learns new skills. My favorite moment is when she sees/hears Reese for the first time after their separation at the end of Book 1.

Even though the book is nearly 600 pages long, it's a page-turner of a story with twists and turns, fascinating characters, and magical creatures. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

I received an ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.

All of the stars!!! This is as close to perfection as fantasy gets for me!!

Why are there only 651 reviews on goodreads!? It boggles the mind. All epic fantasy lovers NEED TO READ THIS!! I can't wait to read the 3rd and final in this prequel series.

We pick up not long after book 1 (Dragon's Reach) left off. Sable is stuck at the mercy of High Prioress Vivaine, separated from her friends as the Kalesh gain ground in their lands. Sable is desperate to join the fight to protect her people and will do whatever she can to help the rebels.

There is so much political intrigue and manipulations happening on page, and behind the scenes. It's fantastic. Everything happens for a reason, and everyone has their own agenda's. It is *chef's kiss! A few familiar faces get some more air time, and we get to see them develop and come into their own.

I do recommend reading Ghost of the Whitewood before reading this as it is referneced in this story, and will click everything into place nicely for you. However, you do not need to if you prefer (although why wouldn't you) I believe I got it for free by joining Andrew's newsletter.

All in all - READ THIS FREAKING BOOK. It's amazing!! I also believe Andrew's is coming out with a kickstarter soon (maybe march), but I'm not sure what it's for yet. Regardless, I'll be backing it. JA Andrews has fast become one of my favourite authors. This book is going straight on the favourites of all time shelf.

From start to finish this action packed adventure will take you on a magical ride as you follow Sable as she grows into the woman she was destined to become. And, along the way you will reunite with old friends, meet new friends and take on the mighty Kalesh Empire.

This is a book I will read over and over again.

This book started off slow with Sable in the Phoenix Priory. However, when the action started it didn't stop; instead it kept on rolling, picking up speed as it went faster and faster until it crashed at the end of the book.

I am amazed at how the author is able to put so much feeling into her books. You can literally feel the power behind Sable's words and I was almost brought to tears more than once because of how intensely this fictional woman believes in her goals strives to protect her people.
