An excellent comparison of Roman Catholic versus Christian belief. While McCarthy and I likely would not agree on everything theologically, I cannot fault his patient excavation through the ‘Catechism of the Catholic Church’, exposing its heresies and departures from orthodoxy. This deep-dive proved to me that things in the Roman Catholic sphere are further away from Christianity than I had originally thought, almost frighteningly so.

The book is split into four sections, each tackling a piece of Roman Catholic belief and providing Biblical evidence for why their interpretation is false and dangerous. Section one, on salvation, presents a gospel that is alien to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, along with an excellent chart that shows the pathway to salvation for the Roman Catholic. Section two, on the mass, provides a harrowing explanation of how Roman Catholics view the Lord’s Supper. Additionally, and even more harrowing, the book has direct quotes from various Roman Catholic documents and people that corroborate these heresies. Section three, on Mary, was probably the section wherein I became the most angry, for the Marian theology of the Roman Catholic Church is entirely falsehood and idolatrous. Finally, section four looked at the hierarchy of authority within the Roman Catholic Church, which was all a bit puzzling and entirely deviating from Scripture yet again.

I found this book really helpful, as it is written by a former Roman Catholic who has been in the thick of all the heresy. He writes with a compassionate yet firm hand towards those who remain within Roman Catholicism to exhort them to salvation. Also helpful in evangelistic endeavours towards Roman Catholics, I should think. Recommend.

Great book

Very detailed description of catholic beliefs vs biblical Christianity. Most people are not familiar with the details of Catholic doctrine and it’s variance from bible.
