Hell of Death

Rate this book
BE this book has so much fucking death in it it's unbelievable! There's a whole truckload of death! There's more death in this book than ten 9/11s combined! You know the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark where all the Nazis' faces melt off? It's like that but for an entire book. It all starts with a school shooting where a bunch of teens totally get massacred like a bunch of little crybabies. It's brutal as fuck! But as if that wasn't enough, these massacred millennials GO TO HELL! OH MY GOD (or lack thereof). Not only that, but the school shooter dies too and follows them there! He's still shooting at them, but this time, if they die--they die FOREVER. (NO WAY!) We'll meet several demons as they travel through the nine circles of Hell, and they're all totally cool as fuck! You've got Beelzebub, the demon lord of bugs! He's the shit. And you've got Lucifer, the Lord of Light (and a total dick!) Asmodeus--the lord of perversity. I could go on and on, but trust me, they're all so totally evil you'll think you're literally seeing the number 666 on every page! Hell of Death is an offensive, hilarious adventure through the depths of Hell where Satan is like your cool older brother. And at the center of it all is the Hell House, Hell's version of the White House, with its own president and everything. So it's all political and shit, too. But not too political. There's literally a scene where you can't even keep reading anymore because a pit opens beneath you and screaming demons pull you down into the abyss! YOU'LL DIE! HOLY SHIT! Don't read this book without drawing an upside cross on your forehead and a pentagram on the floor. Yell out "Hail Satan!" after every page if you want to survive! And if you don't even want to live anymore, then kill yourself with the special Hell of Death razor blade (sold separately). Satan will be waiting for you! SATAN WAITS FOR US ALL!

Hell of Death is a funny and entertaining bizarro comedy. This was first I've read of Vince Kramer's work and I certainly believe its worth following up on his other work. Anyone interested in an off-the-wall comedic read will have a great time with this book, despite some dated gags and dead-end plotlines.

This book is hilariously inappropriate for most readers. I laughed out loud many times while reading it. Then people sitting near me would say, "What's so funny?" and I wouldn't be able to tell them because they were too young or too uptight or just not the kind of person who would find that kind of thing funny. But every once in a while I could share what I'd just read and the person I read it to would ask to borrow the book when I was done.

Hell of Death is about a group of high school students who get murdered and have to go on a quest through Hell while their murderer stalks them. It's filled with sick humor, over-the-top violence, fourth-wall breaking and graphic sexual situations that are really, really funny (if you find that sort of thing funny).

While this is clearly not for everyone, it is so totally for the people it's for that, if that's you, you should go buy it. How would you know if that's you? If you like the movies "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "This is the End" and "Evil Dead 2", you will probably like this book. If you are offended by swearing, the lighthearted treatment of Satan or a book in which every page is numbered 666, then you probably won't. I thought it was excellent.

Hell is other people. Then you die and go to actual Hell, and you have to spend eternity with the people who made you say “Hell is other people” back on Earth. Except maybe not eternity, because the guy who killed you on Earth is chasing you through Hell to kill you again - permanently.

Hell of Death is a novella about high school stereotypes being forced to get along while traversing the circles of the underworld and witnessing each layer’s ironic punishments, like some sort of “Dante’s Breakfast Club”. I liken it to an episode of Drawn Together in the way the book revels in violence, depravity, offensiveness and, well, good old-fashioned homoeroticism. The story pulls no punches in terms of making jokes about real-life shootings and is gloriously misanthropic towards millennials, and while it’s bound to offend some people, I personally thought it was all wrapped in too many layers of absurdity to do much damage.

The trope of “the author is God” is taken to dizzying heights, not only knocking down the fourth wall but tearing it a new Circle of Hell. Maybe there’s a bit too much shouted all-caps dialogue, but in a novel where every page number and chapter is 666, you’ve gotta expect such a level of over-the-topness. And I only recall seeing one typo in the whole book (just the wrong character’s name being used at one point), which is refreshing compared to a lot of the other indie bizarro I’ve read recently. I read this book as a review-copy PDF, which I believe is formatted exactly the same as how it’ll appear on paperback, and it gave me the impression that it’s one of those rare books where you’ll be missing out to a degree if you read it as an ebook instead of as a print copy.

The characters are humorously lax about things like the prospect of eternal torture, and despite its gory edge, the story is light-hearted in a twisted way. I felt something for these young dudes and dudettes as they struggled through the afterlife. If you’re not too put-off by ribald humour, pick up this quick read and raise your horns in support of the great Satan.

A school shooter follows a group of dead (mostly) teens into the seven circles of Hell, hilarity ensues. Every page is page #666, and every chapter is chapter 666. It's one of the funniest things I've read in a long time, and I wish the author was still writing books (and that his books were still in print so I could easily get copies of the other three). It's not for the easily offended and those with small minds might call this "edge lord shit", but I loved it.

Weirdest Book I've Ever Read!

Some books take themselves too seriously. This book doesn't. It just flat out entertains in the most absurdist way. It's got a lot of 666 references and other shenanigans. If you're looking for a book unlike any other, Hell of Death is that book.
