After his business partner commits suicide under mysterious circumstances, Doctor Lawrence Rosewood is unwittingly thrust into a desperate battle to stave off a consortium of criminals who have set their sights on gaining an unwelcome foothold in his Golden Ages chain of retirement homes. At first glance, it appears to be just a normal takeover attempt, but when their sinister motivations behind the unsolicited move become apparent, the psychological chess match between Larry and his opponents turns deadly. Rosewood’s predicament worsens when he discovers that Ted Villeneuve, his best friend and business partner, has committed a crime that could cause their empire to disintegrate beneath his feet. With his business and love life in disarray, Larry meets a young man afflicted with a rare genetic condition. Their instant friendship provides Doctor Rosewood with the inspiration and assistance to turn the game in his favor. ONE LAST MOVE is a fast-moving suspense-filled tale, guaranteed to make you want more. The plot is intricate but cohesive. Rosewood’s last move turns out to be an unexpected stroke of genius, bringing the fast-paced story to a satisfying conclusion. Good reading for mature readers.
In the first chapters, Rosewood loses his best friend and business partner. Losing him again in the discovery of what the last years of his life had become – totally not the man Larry thought of as a brother. In making sense of those first discoveries, Larry continues to uncover more of his partner’s deceptions. He finds their business enmeshed in scandal and on the brink of bankruptcy. It’s up to Rosewood to get to the bottom of what befell Ted before whatever it is ruins everything.
Snowden weaves the various threads of Ted’s deceit and Larry’s efforts to right a rapidly sinking ship with skill. It took some time before I could see the clues that had been left and how they all led back to what ultimately would make or break the story.
There are a good few poignant, intriguing threads to One Last Move, Snowden weaves the narration with interesting facts and tidbits of real-life circumstances. With the surprising addition of thought-provoking questions that face many of us in real-time, the author challenges you to think while at the same time enjoying the respite he offers with his fiction. This is a story that will stay with you for a long time. I highly recommend it!
[I was fortunate enough to be contracted to edit this book preparatory to it going to print. I am reviewing it entirely of my own volition; the opinions expressed herein are mine.]
Great analogy with the moves on the chessboard, needing to keep the bigger picture in view, I loved Doctor Lawrence Rosewood and ability to keep all the balls in the air. So let's mix our metaphors... A fantastic plot with so many wonderful characters playing their part in keeping this suspenseful plot constantly opening up and growing in unexpected ways. A very contemporary topic with the aged care and all the issues that this industry faces and exploitation is to be expected in this vulnerable group of the population as is displayed so marvelously in the assembly in Atlantic City. I just loved everything about this book. Lom is a fabulous character and shows how being different is not such a bad thing when he brings so much joy to the lives around him. Detective Killam with his Columbo mentality and his brown suits. I enjoyed that tv series too. Wes Snowden writes with flair and insight and brilliantly brings all the pieces of the plot together. It is a pleasure to read his stories.
Packed with skill and nuance, Snowden’s latest is a treat for serious mystery buffs.
When Doctor Lawrence Rosewood’s best friend and business partner Ted Villeneuve committed suicide, the latter left a Pandora’s box of mess in his wake. With dwindling finances, a million-dollar lawsuit, and a consortium of criminals with their sights on gaining foothold in the Golden Ages chain of retirement homes, Lawrence and Ted’s long-established business, Lawrence is at his wits end. To get out of the unsavory mess created by his late friend, Lawrence must up his game or risk losing everything precious to him.
Lawrence makes for a charming character with his efficient personality, thoughtful nature, and sharp intellect. The plot is heavily layered with varied angles and multiple plot threads, all explicated in masterful style. Snowden creates psychologically plausible leads, neatly tying up all the loose ends.
Lovers of finely constructed literary mysteries will be greatly rewarded.
This was one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time. The character development was excellent and I cared about the people. The story line was very interesting and revolved around several themes that are pertinent today. The solutions Larry came up with were very ingenious and not at all what I expected. In short, I look forward to reading this author's other books with great enjoyment!
An extremely well written novel, full of intrigue with plenty of twists and turns. The writing is superb and kept me going, wondering what was going to happen next. In addition to being a well crafted story, the book posed a very relevant question for me regarding the rights of an individual to “Die with Dignity”. I look forward to reading this author again.
This was the first novel that I have read from this author. It was an intriguing story with many life changing situations and the impact they had on the characters in the book. It engaged a lot of different emotions in me from laughter, satisfaction, anger and tears. Worth the read.
This one had me up half the night. The characters are warm and quirky, yet relatable. The main character is honest and his predicament not one you often find in a print. This is a gentle suspense with a hint of thriller and romance. All in all, an excellent read by mum’s and my standards.
I enjoyed this book. It has great Characters and a wonderful story line. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more books by him. I have received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.
Snowden makes you wonder at each turn of the page. All the “what if’s “and “would I’s” that he makes you feel keep you enraptured till the very last word. Fabulous work!
