When Dub Walker’s close friend Sheriff Mike Savage becomes the victim of a gruesome murder, the forensic expert is called upon to track down the serial killer who’s been terrorizing the county. Having been involved in more than 100 cases of foul play and witnessed the bloody remains of rape, torture, and unthinkable mutilation, Dub thought he had seen it all—yet the killer is unlike any murderer Dub has ever encountered. Vacillating between wildly divergent personalities fueled by post-traumatic stress disorder—at times calm, cold, and calculating; at others maniacal and out of control—the psychopath taunts, threatens, and outmaneuvers Dub at every turn. The stakes are suddenly elevated as Dub uncovers a deadly conspiracy tainted with unrestrained greed, corruption, and ties to the military establishment and the medical community.
DP Lyle, MD is the Macavity and Benjamin Franklin Silver Award winning and Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, Scribe, Silver Falchion, and USA Best Book Award nominated author of many non-fiction books as well as numerous works of fiction.
He has worked with many novelists and with the writers of popular television shows such as Law & Order, CSI: Miami, Diagnosis Murder, Monk, House, Medium, and Pretty Little Liars and others
For the past 35 years, he has practiced Cardiology in Orange County, California. He is the co-host, along with Jan Burke, of Crime and Science Radio, a twice-monthly program on Suspense Radio.
This book read like an episode of Law & Order...come to find out the author is one of the show's consultants. A few missteps in the book, like, "she snapped her iPhone closed"?? But no big deal. Not too creepy. Read just like a tv show!
For once the hype was accurate. Even though I'm right-handed I'd give my right arm to be able to write like that. If you're going to read a thriller this year then choose this one.
If there were an award for the Best Chapter Endings, D.P. Lyle would be the hands down winner. A master in the art of tethering readers to each and every crisp, deftly written word, his bold imagery snakes through the pages of his latest action packed thriller “Stress Fracture,” making it physically painful to put down.
Dub Walker—an expert consultant in crime scene investigation—is shaken to the core by the butchery as he lingers in the home and now crime scene of his friend and former Huntsville Sheriff Mike Savage. Rage and unrelenting anger are the only clues that seep from the scene, linking the brutality to two previous murders. This senseless act upon a fellow officer and much loved member of society makes the hunt for this particular brand of killer personal for all involved.
But it just doesn’t add up as Dub receives the first of many phone calls from the killer. He is perfectly calm, intelligent and not easily goaded, which is at odds with the viciousness found onsite. As Dub continues to push, he never gives thought to the danger he may be helping to set in motion.
If you are already a fan or are at all aware of Lyle’s work, then you’ve probably figured out this man doesn’t seem to know how to fail. “Stress Fracture” gives you a ringside seat for the action, making you feel like an active participant in the drama.
I liked this novel well enough to finish it. It wasn't my favorite but then again it wasn't so much the story as the typos throughout that were annoying.
Also, when reading this (or any novel)on an e reader there are certain things that cannot be adjusted. For instance, in this novel there is a page that would appear to be a handwritten list made by the main character. While the font can be enlarged for the rest of the story it cannot be enlarged for pages such as this. Very frustrating when I can't even read it with magnified glasses! I have found this to be the case with a few other books as well.
Back to the book...There is a Serial Killer at work whose signature is pure rage leading to "overkill". In fact the deaths take place very quickly but it is what the bodies endure postmortem that is so disturbing.
Police and investigators are working desperately to find the killer but the profile isn't adding up and leaves them wondering if this one killer is really two.
Good read. Definitely worth the $2.99 I paid for it!
Be warned that this is a very graphically violent book.
You are placed in the head of the sick people doing these violent things.
There is not a real mystery here, except to place the names of the characters with the crimes being committed.
It is not hard to figure out how they are selecting the victims, but I must have missed the explanation of how the "handler" does what he does, making the victims vulnerable to the attack.
This is a fast read because a lot of it is dialog.
This was definitely an interesting book that moved quickly enough to keep me reading it quickly. There were some cliches, and I thought the ending was kind of cheaply pulled together but overall it was a great book and I would recommend it for those who enjoy thrillers
THIS WAS A BORING BOOK TO MUCH OVERLY DESCRIPTIVE STUFF, DUB EXPLAINS EVERYTHING DOWN TO THE LAST DETAIL, SO MUCH I JUST SHUT DOWN. HE’S LIKE A BORING TEACHER IN CLASS, HE NEVER HEARD OF A LITTLE CAN GO A LONG WAY. RECIPES, ROOMS, PEOPLE, MOUNTAINS, ROADS, BACKYARDS, VEGETATION, OLD SERIAL KILLERS AND THEIR KILLS. GEEZ! DUB IS VERY SMART, BUT HE OUT SMARTED HIMSELF. I DON’T KNOW WHY HE THOUGHT HE COULD RILE UP A KILLER AND NOT EXPECT SOME BIG TROUBLE. SOME PARTS OF THIS REMINDED ME OF “THE RED DRAGON” (just a little) WHICH IS ON MY FAV. LIST. ;O
Dub Walker is the man you want on your side in a fight, whether physical or intellectual. He is well-trained, smart and resourceful with instincts to match. Like any good hero, he carries old pain which drives him.
In “Stress Fracture,” Walker faces a killer of breathtaking violence. Walk through the case with him and prepare to be captured by the dance of good and evil.
Some suggestive sexual content and strong language, so be warned. It is a thriller, after all.
You get to meet the perp, Brian, before you even know the main character, Dub Walker. Dub is a forensics expert and all of his skills are needed when his good friend gets murdered. Brian is a real whack job who is on a government funded experimental drug. Who is controlling his mind and helping with these murders, takes longer to figure out.
Very quick read, storyline felt plausible. Main character Dub was a bit dense at times. It felt forced that he wasn't picking up on the clues as to who the killer was,or the characteristics of the killer. Other that that I reading this book and probably will read more of this series
The author knows about his subject. Unlike so many of the books I’ve read lately, there is no nonsense about not inflicting fatale wounds, or caring about someone trying to kill them. The scenario is actually plausible. I only wish I hade this author earlier. Torry Duffy
Couldn't put this one down. Moves at a good pace, has you thinking you know it all but still pulls out a nice surprise. Well written. I'm a new fan and Will read more by this author.
A well-crafted thriller, but not for the faint of heart. The violence is a bit more graphic than I am comfortable with, but it did not stop me from finishing the book, or appreciating a story well-told.
I really enjoyed the story and the writing was exceptional. Not too many characters to confuse you and very clear writing style. I will read more.from this author.
Very well written thriller with characters that come to life...or get murdered. D. P. Lyle keeps this story moving along. It almost feels like watching a train wreck that nobody can stop but you can't take your eyes away.
A fantastic first book in the series Dub ( the main character) and his friend tommy who is an investigator in the sheriffs department Are looking for a sadistic killer
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and was very impressed with the story line and the characters in the book. Will definitely read the next book in the series.
This book kept you on your toes until the end. Loved the main character Dub. It gave you insight into the pharmaceutical industry. Don't doubt that there's some truth to this story. Great read!
Really enjoyed reading this one. Fast paced, well written, good storyline. Dub Walker, good strong character. Would like to read more books with him in them.
This was a thrilling story kept me engrossed the whole way through, thoroughly enjoyed it. The suspense kept you on the edge of your seat, didn't want to put it down until I finished it.
